[wdvltalk] Re: another little php session puzzle

2004-04-05 Thread Smile-Poet
Bj,

A two-in-one:

never buy Version 1 of *anything*.

*now* he tells me!

He is not trying to teach you - he is trying to show off how clever he is,
and unfortunately for him, simply demonstrating how clever he isn't :-/

Wise words Bj.

  if ($_SESSION['admin_access'] == true) {

 Insert before that line:

 if (!isset($_SESSION['admin_access'])) {
   echo Session variable 'admin_access'
has not been initialised, so no point in
   continuing with the program. Apparently
the clever instructor has missed out the
code where the user logs in, their details
are looked up in the database and the
session variable 'admin_access' is set to
   either 0 or 1 as appropriate.  Goodbye.;
   exit;
 }

And I'll give that a try. And it came up beautifully; so the
'echo' works!

I do admire your persistence, Joseph, honestly I do.

That's very kind.At least I know a bit more now about MySQL and PHP.
In fact, I rather think the plan he has used is quite good, and if the
missing file comes (which probably includes setting up the session) the
whole thing will work in a unified way. So far as I can test bits and
pieces it does what he says.

As a one time sub-editor I imagine that he did not do the one thing that is
essential for such a book, which is to have someone work through a proof
copy to make sure everything is there, and that it all works.

Also I think he has been a whiz kid, but doesn't realise that at 28 he's
past the point of being forgiven his mistakes... In searching for his
address I see he has been showing off his expertise for at least four years.
Have you come across Eric Rosebrock?

Well, better get a bit more done.

Joseph

[wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update

2004-04-05 Thread Smile-Poet
Sheila,

I honestly think that the best people to write a php book are the experts of
wdvltalk. I can test it for you, and, as you have seen, if there is
anything you have not made crystal clear I will not be able to make it work
;-)

In the course of my travails I realised how real the point you make about
quick-changing php. I think it would be essential - and appropriate - for
a book about web coding to have an up-dating site. Anyone using the book
must be online, so it is natural to offer a term membership for buying the
book.

Now if I can ever get Eric's script to work it would be perfect for such a
site

I am serious, by the way. Do the experts (*you know* who you are) want to
write a book?A collaboration would be good; balance the strengths and
weaknesses. Have expert editors checking the script... perfect.

Joseph

Joseph, you almost make me want to write a php book just for you,
however I
am sure there are good ones out there.

If anyone knows of good PHP book, for beginners, please speak up. I get
asked this question all the time. The O'Reilly book might be OK but it's
2 yrs old now and PHP has changed a lot in that time. That's another
problem with publishing books on web technology, things change and
traditional books go out of date quickly.

[wdvltalk] Re: OT: Fax/Answer-machine software recommendations

2004-04-05 Thread Franni Vincent
I use www.yac.com for inward outbound fax/call
forwarding/voicemail/conference calls etc etc etc - I don't know
about faxback, I've never needed that facility, but it might have
that facility.
Franni

I used to use a product called Supervoice from Pacific Image
Communications to handle both Fax and answermachine on my PC. They
didn't upgrade it after W98 so I had to stop using it as there were
no W2000 drivers. A big loss to anyone working from home I felt.
Someone recently suggested TalkWorks to me - but that also seems to
have disappeared from the Symantec site, other than old references
regarding problems/troubleshooting with it. Seems they upgraded to
WinFax 10 that doesn't have voice facilities! How retrograde is that?
Can anyone suggest a suitable package at a sensible price (In the UK
that is - not the cut price US prices!!) that has support for use in
the UK?
I want Answer Machine capability with remote checking of A/Mc plus
inward and outward fax handling and if possible a faxback on demand
system of a range of documents. Supervoice had all of these for (as
I recall) about £30. Must work on W2000
I do get annoyed when just because the operating system gets
upgraded we lose a range of useful programmes or are expected to
upgrade to a version we don't want because support for our version
is withdrawn. Isn't it a good job that we don't all have to change
our cars every time the fuel companies add some additional chemical
to improve performance or reduce pollution?

[wdvltalk] Re: [wdvltalk]update -- read this [not OT] Serious advice!!!

2004-04-05 Thread Smile-Poet
OK.AVG says no viruses. The message has now moved to 'deleted items'
and there is a message.

Aha! froze OE again.Shut down the pc, reopened and got a message saying
the mail (which says it has deducted money from my card for hosting) was
trying to download from here

ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\\MAIN.MHT!http://privatemailboxrentals.com/main1.chm:
:/main1.html

What can be done about this???

Joseph

(And I have emptied the deleted items folder)

I have just received a mail with

 From: 243306 @ msn...

 Subject: Receipt of Payment

 it is 2Kb.

I went to delete it but is wouldn't move from the inbox and then appeared
to
bring OE to a halt. I had to restart to stop whatever it was up to.
The
message window was blank. It does not have an attachment.

I have just updated and am going to set AVG to check everything, but this
seems a nasty little thing.Take care.

 Joseph
