[wdvltalk] RE: [PHP] problems with php.ini - HELP

2004-04-06 Thread Smile-Poet
Paul,

If that will help; though I was just thinking that, if you can give me the
line number (and paste the line itself so I know to look at the right one) I
can send back what is in my php.ini. This was set by the installation
program, and might at least give you pointers to solve the problem.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want to send off-line.

Joseph -- or I could send my php.ini. Whichever you prefer Paul.
 Joseph,
You want me to send you my php.ini off-list?

Folks,

This is the book I'm working off.

PHP and MySQL Web Development, 2nd edition
Luke Welling, Laura Thomson

I'm managing to work through it happily enough and would recommend it based
on progress so far, i.e. about page 200.

[wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update

2004-04-06 Thread Smile-Poet
drew,

That's an impressive list. But are these for true beginners, or for people
with other coding skills? I think php is so flexible, relatively easy, and
developing so fast that people will be going straight to it, rather than
adding it after the hard slog of learning and using serious coding.
(That's a compliment folks, and a touching of the forelock - if i still had
one - to the professionalism of this list.)

The web is still expanding very fast. The nature of it encourages people
to dive in and get on with it. Like me many will want to implement
practical projects rather than become php pupils per se. That was the
attraction of the book I have been tripping up on. That book also reveals
(through its failures) better ways to do it.

And many will not want to, or not be able to, attend classes. (I've just
realised how hard I'm selling the idea. It must be because I have
experienced how well you all teach)

Due to still being strung across two machines (carrying bits one-by-one is
slow work ;-)) I don't have to hand the address of the nascent marketing
group.

I thought this might be a good place to discuss my book idea if enough
people are interested. Can anyone send me the email address for the group.

Many thanks

2004-04-06 Thread Peter MacGregor
I've been pout all day so before I went I closed down my broadband, closed
all programs and set off a full system scan. The report when I came back
was that it was clean - so it seems that David's suggestion is probably right.

I thought it was odd as I sue Eudora and not OE for all emails and that
doesn't usually get infected. (Sure, there's always going to be a first time!)

Just one point on this - do you guys and gals run a full system check while
working, or do you leave the machine dedicated to the job? A full scan for
me takes about five hours so having to shut down when I am here is a real
PITA. I always have some non-computer work I can do, but that length of
time takes some filling!

do you guys and gals run a full system check while

i got some kind of symantec software when i first purchased this computer,
but did not renew after the first year, so i haven't run a virus scan in
approx two years

rather than open all the doors wide and have virus scanning software try to
stop stuff from coming through (or, as you guys seem to do, run a scan once
in a while to see if anything did get through), i simply don't allow bad
sh1t to get through

thusly:

i don't allow activex to run in IE (goodbye flash -- too bad, that's life)

i don't allow OE to show html mail (goodbye web bugs -- yay!!!)

i don't open attachments

from anybody

ever

helps?

Sooner or later, you have to run somebody else's executable code. A new
browser, a word processor, an ftp program, a file compression utility, .NET
Framework... and even people as careful and security-conscious as Microsoft
(what's that smiley for 'tongue-in-cheek'?) have been known to send out
official software releases on CD that are virus infected. So you are still
not quite safe without on-access file scanning.

I guess I am nearly as careful as you... AND I run Norton Anti-Virus with
daily updates. Just in case I ever do slip up.

[wdvltalk] Re: [not OT] Serious advice!!!

2004-04-06 Thread Peter MacGregor
I agree BJ.

As a consultant I have clients that want me to review contracts,
specifications and all sorts of other documents - including items they want
me to put on their websites for them! If I wasn't opening attachments I'd
starve to death very quickly. I'm afraid I fail to see the point of having
access to the web and email if you aren't going to receive - either via
download or from clients etc - documents as attachments.

I certainly don't open any for strangers and like you I update NAV
regularly. I also run Zone Alarm plus check with Uncle Bill about every ten
days (when I get a quiet moment!) for any updates. New clients have to
advise me first by phone of their email address and are told to which of
mine they should send stuff until I am happy with them. I also tell them I
want to know which version of their AV they are using (I then check the
supplier site to see if it is current) and when they last updated Windows.
Usually produces some long silences followed by a question such as How do
you mean? or words to that effect!

you've swallowed the microsoft philosophy hook, line, and sinker

web = html, email = text

anything else is evil

who says a document has to be in a format that might contain some worm or
virus?

who says? anybody already assimilated by the microsoft borg

Sooner or later, you have to run somebody else's executable code.

 no, i do not

Apologies, Rudy, I was thinking of us ordinary people, who don't even have
the talent, let alone the time, to write their own operating system and
macro assembler in hex code and burn them onto an eprom, entering each byte
of code through a hex keypad, then use the assembler to code their own
browser, email client, text editor, graphics package, all hardware device
drivers, etc. from scratch... on the other hand, are you *sure* you never
execute anyone else's code? ;o)

if it is emailed to me, no, never

if i choose to download it from a reputable site, then of course

e.g. http://www.kaylon.com/power.html

but that's not what we were talking about

we were talking about virus scanning

and why would you need to virus scan reputable software?

and why would you need to virus scan reputable software?

Because there have been occasions when very reputable software has been
released on official CD and found to have been sent out with a virus
infection. Ok, I don't recall this having happened very recently, but that
just means it's overdue to happen again! Here are some Googled examples
from a few years back:

A Japanese-language version of a Sega Dreamcast role-playing game has
become infected with a computer virus. The game, Atelier Marie, includes a
screensaver which is infected with the highly damaging Kriz virus. Although
the Dreamcast itself is left unscathed by this, anyone loading the
screensaver onto their PC from the game's CD-ROM will be in for an
unpleasant surprise, when the virus activates on Christmas Day. (The
Reguster, 2001)

A red-faced Corel has confirmed that a number of its recently released
CorelDRAW 8.0 for Macintosh CD-ROMs also contained a virus. (1998)

We have received notice from the UK publication Virus Bulletin and a
number of independent reports that the UK publication PC Gamer included a
cover CD with files infected by the Win95/Marburg virusThe
smackplw.exe infected file will get executed if you watch any of the
movies on the CD (1998)

The free Vellum 3D version 3.0 CD-ROM contains the Macintosh MBDF virus.
...Anyone running the Macintosh demo program who does not have a resident
antivirus scanner will be infected with the virus. (CIAC, 1997)

We have come across another Microsoft CD ROM containing Concept, a MSWord
macro virus. The CD ROM is called The Microsoft Office 95 and Windows 95
Business Guide. (SS, 1995)

In 1995, the first Word macro virus -- now called Concept -- was massively
distributed by Microsoft on a CD-ROM called Microsoft Windows 95 Software
Compatibility Test. The shipment went to hundreds of companies in August
1995. [1] Microsoft helpfully refused to acknowledge the severity of the
problem for a few weeks. When it finally did, it named the virus Prank as
spin control. Partly as a consequence of this release and another around
the same time in which 5,500 more infected CD-ROMs were distributed by a
different company generating support software for Microsoft Windows NT, the
Concept virus is now very common in the wild.
Much more recently, Microsoft has distributed a word macro virus known as
Wazzu multiple times. In September of last year, an edition of Microsoft's
The Microsoft SPCD [Solution Provider CD] was distributed containing a Wazzu
virus infected document. The CD was distributed to all Microsoft Solution
Providers...One month later, Microsoft distributed Wazzu again, this time in
Switzerland at ORBIT, an information technology exhibition. This sample of
Wazzu was carried on a CD-ROM called Letz Fetz on the Netz and was in a
document containing hot-line phone numbers for Microsoft Germany. Although
Microsoft officials were informed of the contamination, the CD was
distributed anyway. The Wazzu infected document was also downloadable from
Microsoft's Swiss Website for a period of five days. (1997)

I use KMail as my email client, without HTML-mode enabled. I also use

Bj et al,

I sweated when I read mails of viri passed on by me.But David
P must be
right; it was repeating the url that was picked up and
recognised. I sent
it thinking someone may know where it may be acted on to catch the
originator.

AVG has swept every corner for crumbs (oh, no, that's something
else) this
a.m. and found nary a thing; ZA sits there grinning. I am
concerned that
Aunty Spam found this same problem with deleting even after it was
quarantined.

But, even before following the advice, I have come up clean. I
have
followed the advice just in case.

Go to Tools, Options and click the Read tab. If there's
an item Read all messages in plain text, put a check in that
and you are
a
lot safer from virus and worm attacks.

Have ticked box - no more pretty pictures then!

Go to www.microsoft.com, look on the left hand side for Windows
Update and click the link. Get your system patched!

Microsoft, he say: There are no critical updates available at this
time.

Sorry for all the alarm. I realised it was a really nasty one
and hadn't
had any warning note, from Norton or anywhere else, so thought it
might be
very new and wanted to alert everyone.

Joseph

[wdvltalk] Re: weas [not OT] Serious advice! NOW MSd and Active X

2004-04-06 Thread michael ensor
the problem with a lot of MS software ( I was going to say all, but then
someone would respond with exceptions) is that they have stood the
security procedures on their head and many current ills stem from that

e.g. they started with the OLE concept ( Word) and extended this into
ActiveX...

Instead of say for example with JavaScript (and that is of course not
infallible) with your virtual machine restricting what may be run on your
computer, Word macros and websites that use ActiveX require that you trust
the sender/web site maker, AND that their machines are clean, AND that the
website hasn't been hacked and modified AND their motives are pure as the
angels.

At best Active X allows spyware, at worst identity theft and
crashes..and then there are those who won't allow Javascript to run but
cheerfully allow ActiveX, lol

So if you follow normal security rather than MS approach, I am afraid you
don't allow anything that you cannot control..

Why do so many corporate firewalls disallow attachments and html
email.see above, lol
