[wdvltalk] OT - Wireless network guard missing

2006-12-22 Thread Amrit
My old Toshiba Satellite A20 is supposed to have a Wireless card inside.
Actually it's hard-disk crashed and I got the hard-disk replaced. In
between I purchased a new HP laptop (Centrino Duo etc.) that comes with
WiFi and all; so I thought maybe I'll connect both the laptops
wirelessly. The installation CD of the old Toshiba has a Wireless card
driver, but it fails to install it. Even when I check the Network
Adaptors (Control Panel - System - Hardware Devices) the wireless
network card is not visible. Could there be a chance that the card is
there but I'm not able to see it? Even the PDF manual says I should have
it. There is even a switch that lets me switch the wireless feature
on/off :-). I'd really appreciate if anybody has an idea and can share
it with me.

Re: [wdvltalk] OT - Wireless network guard missing

2006-12-22 Thread Bj

Amrit,

I wouldn't be certain that your A20 has wireless. The spec says under
wireless networking that it comes with infrared and is **wifi ready** so
unless you had it upgraded to wifi it may not be there. If there, it could
still be disabled in the BIOS settings.

You should be able to check for the physical presence of a wifi card;
usually there's a small panel on the underside of the laptop, secured with
one or two screws, that opens to show the mini PCI slot that it goes in. On
some laptops there's another panel to cover any additional RAM slots, but
those are under the keyboard on the A20.

You can recognise a wifi mini PCI card from the two wires that fix to it,
that are the antennae. Look for 'wifi mini PCI' on eBay and you'll see
pictures! There could also be a modem card in a slot under there.
