Hi Deb,

Thank you for the reply. You are right - I wouldn't let anyone else move
my computer. I guess I answered my own question by asking it. :-)

[wdvltalk] Moving a computer

2004-10-31 Thread mrport
Hi all,

We will be moving in about 2 weeks and I wanted to know the right way to
move a computer. Should I let the movers take it or take it myself? I
know to let the computer acclimate to room temperature at the destination
before I switch it on - anything else?

TIA,
Riva

[wdvltalk] Losing focus

2004-10-28 Thread mrport
Hi all,

I have an old computer and find that lately my computer "loses focus" in
the window that I am working in. i.e. I will be writing a letter in Word
and suddenly the top greys out and my keyboard won't work. (Obviously
because I am not "focused" in Word anymore) and I have to click on Word
again to continue working. Any idea why this is happening and what I can
do about it. I am hoping to get a new computer soon but would still like
to be able to rectify this.

TIA,
Riva

[wdvltalk] Web Designers Costs?

2004-08-31 Thread mrport
Hi all,

I am busy with a website for a company and they want me to take care of
their advertising. They said that I should send them a bill for my
services. One website I found will put the ad on 9 sites for a total of
$656. The company wants me to charge it to my credit card and then pay
me back. The bottom line is that I don't have $656 spare to do that. As
a web designer, is that one of the things that I should do?? I don't
understand why the company can't give them the company cc number - isn't
that strange too??

(BTW, the guy I am working with is nice. It is his partner who is doing
all this.)

TIA,
Riva

[wdvltalk] Re: Banner Ad

2004-08-24 Thread mrport
Hi Jan,

I took out the image and have the text on a plain colored background.
The text morphs from one sentence to the next - could that be what is
contributing to the size?

Can I send you the banner off list?

Thanks,
Riva

[wdvltalk] Banner Ad

2004-08-24 Thread mrport
Hi all,

I am putting together a banner ad for my client and was wondering if
anyone had any advice? It is 468 x 60 and I made an animated gif. One
problem - they guy said 15K max and mine of over 58K. How can I make it
smaller without sacrificing what I already have too much?

TIA,
Riva
P.S. I don't remember if this list accepts attachments. If so I would be
happy to send it to the list.

2004-08-11 Thread mrport
There is a joke about a doctor going up to a lawyer at a party. He asked
the lawyer if he could ask him a question. The lawyer said he could.
The doctor then said, "Whenever I am at a party or out socially I get
people coming up to me to ask me medical questions. Do you think I
should charge them for this?"
The lawyer said, "Sure."
The doctor said, "Thank you!"
The lawyer replied, "You're welcome. That will be $50."

[wdvltalk] Re: Website price

2004-08-11 Thread mrport
One thing that amazes me is that this guy would think that it was a
possibility to call me and ask me to lower my price. I wonder whether he
would do the same for a plumber or a doctor or a mechanic??

The truth is that he doesn't need a big website, if at all. He is a
divorce mediator and his clientele would be here in Columbus, OH. Most
of his clients don't use the internet, so apart from someone local
wanting to find out his contact info there is really no need for him to
have a website. I also do not want to work with someone who thinks they
can "bargain" - and I am not going to give people discounts anymore. At
least this was an "easy" lesson to learn.

Thanks all,
Riva

Update: the computer switched off and back on again and came up with a
drive error. I gave my friend the number for tech support. She called
there and they told her that the hard drive died. Her brother is going
to call the place he got it from to see if they can fix it (the guy told
him before that once the computer left their store they are no longer
responsible for it.) If not, could I do it? I don't mean "Am I able?" -
more like "Is it too complicated and/or not worth the effort?"

Thanks again,

Thanks Jan. I will run AdAware and see what comes up.

I did get some feedback from a message forum saying that the buttons
disappear because the images have not loaded completely. I am preloading

[wdvltalk] Graphic problem

2004-04-29 Thread mrport
Hi all,

I have a problem with a graphic. A friend of mine got a photograph of
someone as an .eps file. She couldn't open it so she sent it to me and I
opened it in Photoshop and saved it as a .jpg. I sent it back to her and
she can't open it. She keeps getting a blank with a red "X" in the
corner. Any idea why this is happening and what to do about it?

blank file. Any ideas anyone??

2004-04-08 Thread mrport
You are right - I mean the source of the web page (when you do View
Source). I have found a way to get Perl to read the contents of the page
into a file. I just need to figure out how to get it to read the
shopping cart page (what I am after) and find a number on it. I keep
getting a user not found error - so I know that I am close.

I don't know php but I would imagine it is somewhat like Perl. Can you
do it in php?

Thanks!

[wdvltalk] JavaScript Question

2004-03-23 Thread mrport
Hi all,

I was wondering if there is a way to check if a field in a form has been
left blank and, if it is, not have it appear on the e-mail (that I get
from the form processor.)

For example, my code is:

Butternut Squash

I want people to be able to check the checkbox if they want the item and
then put in the quantity in the "quantity" box. If they don't check the
box, nothing for that item comes back on the form. When I get the form
back, it has all the quantity items, even if they didn't enter a
quantity.
Am I making any sense?

TIA,
Riva

[wdvltalk] Re: Body of an e-mail?

2004-03-23 Thread mrport
Actually, it hit me after I sent the e-mail that I can just add
checkboxes and a form in the code so people can just check what they want
and it will be e-mailed to them. (This is a cheap, quick website - I can
do Perl but figure a quick form from Bravenet.com would do the trick.)

Thank you for replying.

[wdvltalk] Body of an e-mail?

2004-03-23 Thread mrport
Hi all,

I am doing a website for a local caterer. She wants people to have the
option of looking at the menu online and then either faxing, e-mailing or
calling in what they want. My question is about the e-mail - is there
some way to get the person's order in the body of the e-mail so that they
don't have to retype what they want??

TIA,
Riva

[wdvltalk] MS Word question

2004-03-15 Thread mrport
Hi all,

I hope it is o.k. to post this question here - it is not directly related
to web design. I have recently started having problems opening Word 2000
(WinME OS). I uninstalled and reinstalled it and it still hangs when I
try and open it. I end up having to reboot. Dell tech support have not
helped. If anyone has any ideas for me, I would really appreciate it.

I apologize if this question is not "allowed" here.

Oh gee - it reminds me of the guy who called tech support because his
screen went blank. After an hour of trying to figure out what was wrong,
the tech asked the guy to check the cable. When the guy said that he
couldn't, the tech asked why. The guy replied, "The power is out - I
can't see a thing back there!"
