Re: [wdvltalk] OT: Thunderbird

2006-10-31 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

I haven't tried it in about a year when I was trying to find a decent
newsreader for my Mac (OS X 10.4) It lasted less than a day but your
mileage

may vary.

That's the Redmond blood talking ;-)

But then again Thunderbird wasn't all that about a year ago...

UMM, you didn't notice that I was talking about for my MAC?

Yep, I have both platforms. I just don't care for Thunderbird as news
reader. I tried others as well.

Also, other than the Office programs (primarily Outlook 2007, One Note
Word) I use Dreamweaver, TopStyle and Fireworks the most. Though I do like
the new Expression Web, it is light years ahead of FrontPage and in some
places better than Dreamweaver 8 so that it will be interesting when MS gets
the bugs out and a few more features. I love to see a competitive market.
Without Firefox there would not have been an IE 7. Without competition then
who knows what Adobe might have done with Dreamweaver and GoLive.

BTW, I should have said I have not found a newsreader I like for the Mac so
if anyone has suggestions I would like to hear them.

Anyone any experience of the Thunderbird OS Email program?

Comments - Good Bad or Indifferent welcome. I'm happy with Firefox
and am very tempted.

Thunderbird rocks. Enough said.

It was a touch fiddly to begin with setting up multiple e-mail accounts not
knowing if I wanted a single set of shared folders or sets for each account
but now it's just great!

It's internal junk mail filtering is also quick to train and so much easier
(and reliable) than Anti-virus bolt-ins.

It will even import your existing Outlook Express inboxes which was
brilliant for migration.

Overall run with it and enjoy!

It's all I've used for the last few years. If you use the
calendar/contacts/to-do functions of Outlook, then you might be worth
looking elsewhere or downloading the plugins, otherwise it beats
look-out distress (Outlook Express) hands-down. For ages now it's
been advising me that links in scam/phising emails don't point to the
URLs they say they do (something that only now IE7 is doing) and it
automatically marks emails as junk with about a 98% sucess-rate. It
also marks emails as Scams and only loads images when you want it to.

It's also not based on IE, so it's not vulnerable to the same issues
as Outlook.[1]

Matt

Been using it for a few years and have to agree with MOU and Matthew
-- works reliably and has far better features than Express.

The news features of Thunderbird aren't that great, I'll agree - it's
a bit like a program I used to have many years ago (I think it was
called NewsAgent) and was fairly basic last time I looked.

As a mail client, Thundbird is great. If you want a fast, searchable
and organised way to browse the newsgroups, the best reader I've found
(and it's completely platform/OS independent!) is wait for it...
yep, you've guessed it: http://groups.google.com/

Cheers,

Matt
