Subject: [wdvltalk] What mistake I have made?

Hello all:

  I have a desk-top win2k-pro and a lap-top winXP-home, they are connected
simply
by a crossover cable for exchange files. This home network has been working
well
for months. Now I upgrade the winXP-home to winXP-pro and found the home
network
doesn't work again. The Lap-top side always says:

" zWorkgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of
this server to find out if you have access permission.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
 available. "

Who could tell me what work I had missed? Thanks!

Hi Yumin,

> Who could tell me what work I had missed? Thanks!

Did you try the suggestions made by the two posters who answered you?

- Check your IPs
- Check who you're logged in as
- Try pinging one machine from the other

Let us know how you got on with these.

Cheers
Jon

Haven't you already asked this question before? What result did you get from
the suggestions provided to you previously?

My suggestion comes from a computer programmer on another list.
Make sure you are logged into the XPpro machine as administrator, then set all your
drive and folder permissions.

Win XP has its own built in firewall. Perhaps that is what is causing your problem.
Another thought is: administrator rights. XP pro is more strict about that.

First thoughts would be to make sure you've got your IP addresses correct
(if you're using a direct cable connection then fixed Ip addresses always
work with me) such as 192.168.0.x with the usual Subnet mask of
255.255.255.0 and both machines are in the same workgroup.

If not then make sure you got some kind of traffic happening - open the
Command window (Start > Run > type "cmd") and then ping the other machine
("ping 192.168.0.1" for example). If you get a reply then there is some
communication happening so the problem is a little deeper. if you get
"request times out" then the machines can be linked but something's blocking
the way. If you get "Destination host unreachable" then the machines can't
even find each other.

Run with this for now and let us know what happens
