This isn't really strange at all. It's a matter of recognizing the
drive and enumerating the content. For example, when you put in a cd
there is a moment when the searching flashlight icon shows before the
content of the cd is listed. Also there are times when you click on
Windows Explorer and get the flashlight while the explorer program
busily goes about its business of creating the folder or tree view.

With a usb connection, it's the same thing. Usb is built for quick
connections and that's the case with such small things as flash
drives, keyboards, printers etc. A big/large/humongous/ginormous
external drive with all those files, pictures, sound files, movies on
it takes time to enumerate.

And sometimes when you use more than one usb device, windows expects
it in a particular port. You may then see two removable devices, with
different drive letters, even though only one is actually plugged in.
I've got one machine where the camera works in one port and the thumb
drive in another and I lack the patience to wait them out if I switch
the connections. OS helpfulness is sometimes a mixed blessing.

Wikipedia has a very nice piece on usb if you are interested in some
of the history and technical details.

Well, that makes sense, thanks Drew!

Re: [wdvltalk] OT: reading an external hard drive - firewire/usb

2006-12-26 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Deb

The key here first of all is listen to Windows's sound effects when you
plug in your external drive. Hot-swappable devices will trigger three
events in Windows (device connect, device disconnect and device error)
that have sounds attached.

Unless you have disabled or changed sounds, when you plug in your
external drive you'll get a two note, low then high sound play to
indicate that a device has been connected. If you don't get this sound
then straight away you know there is no communication at all between the
external drive and Windows.

If you do get this sound then at least you know Windows knows it's
attached. If you hear three of the same notes in quick succession then
you have an error trying to set up and access the drive for use. There I
can't help you because I too have had problems installing and
reinstalling drivers many times over to no avail (for both the device
AND the USB system).

If you don't get this triple note sound then Windows has successfully
accessed the drive and things everything is OK.In this case you'll need
to double-check that the drive is recognisable through Control Panel.

From Control Panel, open up Administrative Tools and double-click
Computer Management. From the console window that pops up, select
Disk Management (under the Storage group) from the Treeview on the
left.

You'll be presented with two panels on the right: a list of all assigned
drive letters in a list in the top panel and a series of colour-coded
bars in the bottom. These bars represent all the drives attached to the
system, regardless of drive letter. If your external drive is working
correctly and can communicate with Windows you will see it here. If it
IS here but NOT associated with a drive letter then you'll have to sort
it manually..

Right-click on the bar that represents your drive and choose Change
Drive Letter and Paths... from the context menu. From here click the
Add... button and assign a letter from the available entries in the
drop down list. You can also change the existing letter by clicking
Change... if there IS a letter already assigned.

If you don't see your drive listed as a coloured bar in Disk Management
then you have a more complex problem.

Hope this is of some use!

Best Wishes and all for this holiday week.

Hi,

I think my computer is possessed, please I need some input. Short version
of what's happened:

External hard drive has been working fine via firewire cable hooked up to
old puter and 3 new puters (don't ask - problems w/all of them). Came a
point in time I had no desktop computer available so hooked up the laptop
to the external but via USB2. Worked fine (slower because it was USB2 vs
firewire but still worked).

Now, the external is hooked back up to the desktop via firewire and the
computer isn't seeing this K drive - it's like invisible. Have tried both
firewire ports, checked all hardware connections, uninstalled and
reinstalled the software several times still won't see the K drive. Tried
hooking up the USB cable just to see if it would work ... here's where the
possessed comes in - I plug the USB2 cable into the back of the external
- suddenly it sees the drive as Windows Explorer pops open to the K
drive! I plug the other end of the USB cable into the computer and it
disappears! How the heck can the drive be read when the cable is only
plugged into the external and not into the computer and how the heck do I
get it to read the K drive via the firewire so I can use the software for
backing up and restoring? When I open the software to try this, it
doesn't see the drive - can only been seen via Windows Explorer it seems.

Thanks!

Deb, I wish I were able to shed some light on this, but I am experiencing a
similar problem with a USB 'travel' (thumb) drive. It use to work on every
computer it was plugged into - even those with Win98 after drivers were
installed. Now, it works as usual on some, but comes up as a 'generic
removeable USB drive' on several of them - no drive letter is assigned
rendering it invisible to my file managers.

If I discover any commonality to the problem, I let you know.

Merry Christmas,
Tom Fosson
