This doesn't works for errors that don't redirect there, right? So if I 
make an AJAX request that causes an error on the server, it wouldn't 
trigger the error handling function?

One option is to create a custom error handler 
(see http://web2py.com/books/default/chapter/29/04/the-core#Routes-on-error) 
and have it take whatever action is desired before returning a response.
