yes, this is possible.

lets say you created a form like this: form = SQLFORM(db.post) and
your post have two fields title and body. the form will be like this:

title - input for title
body - textarea for body

you can make it like this:
form[0][1][1] = TD(INPUT(_type="text", _name="body", _size=50))

to replace body textarea with a body textbox.
