Ias you say it is supposed to work as a drop-in replacement. I never tried 
but it should work fine with one of the mysql drivers and the web2py mysql 
adapter.

Actually it shoudl work just the same.  It's just we don't say it is 
supported.  You use the same settings as MySQL.  I made sure from Monty 
himself.  He created both MySQL and MariaDB both named after his daughters.
