i think you should pass the variable, define the target (if using ajax)
e.g. change the value when button clicked
*controllers/default.py*
def index():
return dict(message='LED Test - Main Menu', pinstatus='index')

def redon():
return dict(pinstatus='redon')

*views/default/index.html*
{{extend 'layout.html'}}

button onclick=ajax('{{=URL('default', 'redon')}}',[],'target');
{{=T('Turn On')}}
/button

div id=target{{=pinstatus}}/div

*views/default/redon.html*
{{=pinstatus}}
