WO Jobs in Southern Germany

2015-12-23 Thread Ralph Scheuer
Hi everybody,

this is a bit off-topic, but I'll still try it:

if anybody is looking for an experienced WO developer in Southern Germany,
preferably in the Munich region, please feel free to get in touch with me
off-list via this e-mail address.

I would rather go back to WO development rather than starting the next Spring /
Hibernate job.

A proper CV and references etc. are available as well.

Thank you and my apologies for the OT message.

Ralph

Hi Bart,

Add the FrontbasePlugin.framework to your Build Path and install it if it's not
on your machine.

Re: Business rules and filtering

2013-02-14 Thread Ralph Scheuer
Hi Pascal,

You could consider the JBoss Drools Framework, or, if you want to implement
more complex processes, jBPM.

http://www.jboss.org/jbpm

http://www.jboss.org/drools/

JBPM comes with a nice Eclipse plugin that even lets you define the process as
a nice flowchart and hook it up to your Java code.

Advantage: the rules and the process model can be changed without redeploying
the app, you just change the file and call a refresh method to read it.

I am currently using this for validation rules in an online shop that needs
frequent modifications of those rules.

It's a piece of cake to integrate this into a WO app. All you need to do is add
some Jars to your project.

I have built a little test Project as a proof of concept. Let me know if you
would like the source. If more people are interested, I might write a Wiki
page...

Cheers,

Ralph

State of Windows deployment in 2009?

2009-11-24 Thread Ralph Scheuer

Hello everybody,

due to the fact that some of our customers use Windows servers, I
would be interested how others deploy their WO apps on Windows these
days...

The wiki only refers to Apache when it comes to WO 5.4 on Windows and
does not mention IIS...

However, some customers need specific IIS features like Single-Sign-
On via ActiveDirectory or do not want another web server for
political reasons.

How do you deal with that?

Is it still possible to use the old 5.2 adaptors (CGI or ISAPI) with
modern IIS versions and WO 5.4? How about 64-bit-ness?

Would it be possible to set up WO 5.2 and just replace all the
frameworks with the 5.4 equivalents so that at least the CGI adaptor
(WebObjects.exe) from the old version works?

Has Apple ever released the source of the Windows adaptors so that
they could be recompiled for 64-bit IIS?

Thanks for your input.

Migrating a WO app from Oracle to Frontbase

What is the best / easiest / fastest way to migrate the data? Should
I use WebObjects / EOF? Are there any caveats to watch out for?

In memoriam David Terán

2006-01-25 Thread Ralph Scheuer

Hello everybody,

I would like you all to take a short break from the usual development
issues and bear with me for a short moment.

Today I learned that David Terán, an extremely talented WO developer,
a very valuable contributor to this list and the WONDER project and a
friend of mine and many others on these lists, has passed away on
December 19, 2005. This came completely unexpected for me and
certainly to many other people because he was humble enough to stay
silent about the cancer he was suffering from.

I think almost everybody who was subscribed to this list in the
course of the recent years has somehow recognized him. The archives
of both mailing list are full of helpful advice and answers he
provided to many people. Many developers (including myself) have
benefitted a lot from the discussions with him and the answers he
provided.

Those of you who have had the chance to meet him at various Wocoa
developer meetings and other opportunities will probably remember him
as an extraordinarily intelligent, humorous and very nice person with
whom it was always a pleasure to hang out.

I have had the pleasure to work with him for more than a year and I
really enjoyed it and had a great time with him. I'm missing a friend
and a mentor. My heart is full of sorrow and I'm still completely
flummoxed. People just don't die in their 30s - there are too dreams
that need to come true, too many crazy ideas, there's still so much
you want to do, so many things to check out, YOU WANT TO LIVE!

In our time, there's always something important to do, and there's
always a tomorrow and another time to make things right, to thank a
friend for everything he's done for you. "It's just not _that_
important now, I can do that later" - and all of a sudden, it's over.
Sometimes, destiny does not wait for you until you got the
"important" things done.

Keep this in mind, be grateful for the gift of life and all the
opportunities and chances it gives you, tell your friends and family
what they mean to you, say "thank you" when it's due and check your
schedule and your priorities. Many things in life are really much
less important than they may seem at first sight. Use your chances
while you can.

Thanks David - for all your help, for the great time I had with you,
for many heated discussions, for your advice, for the fun we had, for
the hard times we had and simply for being what you were.

We'll be missing you.

(slightly-ot): Problem with ImageMagick and Runtime.exec

2006-01-24 Thread Ralph Scheuer
(Sorry for being a bit OT and sorry for cross-posting, but this is urgent for me and maybe someone on this list has already seen it)Hello everybody, in my WO application, I use ImageMagick's "identify" command line tool to get various properties of image files. However, in order to get the properties of EPS files, ImageMagick's "identify" uses ghostscript (calls gs), which I have downloaded and installed separately. "identify" also works nicely and seemlessly with the command line on EPS files exactly the same way it would work with JPEGs etc. However, Java's Runtime.exec method seems to require an extra step for dealing with identify's call to gs. The following code snippet:                 try {		                        Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(invocationString);		                        process.getInputStream().read(myBytes);		                        results = new String (myBytes);		                        System.out.println("# "+ results );		                    } catch (Exception exception) {		                    }produces my desired result string as long as I work with non-EPS files. If I use EPS files and identify calls "gs", my result string is empty and I get nothing back. Is there anything I have to watch out for? Thanks in advance for any hints...Ralph ___

Re: How to install JavaMail

2005-12-08 Thread Ralph Scheuer
For portability reasons, you might also want to consider sticking the
jars into a framework:

just copy them into a subdir called "Java" and make a copy files
build phase to your application server target in XCode. Add your jars
to that build phase and set the copy target to "Resources / Java". If
they are moved there in the built framework and you can call the
classes, everything's ok.

Thus, you get a self-contained framework that you can move to various
deployment machines without worrying for their ext dirs.

UTF-8 multilingual form input

2005-12-08 Thread Ralph Scheuer

Hi everybody,

we have an application with UTF-8 HTML encoding where we input
multilingual form data (Czech, Polish, English, German, Slovenian,
Russian, Bulgarian, Turkish, etc.). This works in almost every case.
It _always_ works for cyrillic input and in most cases, for all other
languages.

However, in some cases, special latin characters in some languages
are not displayed correctly. In these cases, the string values are
already stored in the database in the wrong manner.

The strange thing about this is that this is not always reproducible
- certain special characters (such as accented characters in slawic
languages) are sometimes stored correctly and sometimes not. For that
reason, I cannot be more specific here...

The browsers used for the input are Safari and Firefox on the Mac.
Both browsers behave identically in cases where the input is not
stored correctly. The application itself is deployed on OS X, the
database we use is Frontbase.

Any general hints?

Thanks.

Re: Creating PDF output on demand

Hi,

You might as well check out PDFGenerator available via http://
www.cluster9.com/ .

This comprises a complete framework that was written with WO in mind
and allows you to design your PDF templates like WO components. It
also offers some nice additions like charting and barcode support.

The demo does not seem to be online right now but you can contact
David Terán via e-mail if you are interested.

Hi,

we have a similar problem for WO generated forms, reports, etc. One
idea is the following:

Capture the HTML output from a generated page and save this to an
HTML temp file, automate Safari or FireFox to open and print this
document via AppleScript, capture the PostScript output via a cups
backend filter and convert it via the OS X "pstopdf" tool or
Distiller into PDF.

I would prefer FireFox because in printouts the page wraps of
tables better than Safari.

Are there any better ideas?
