[libreoffice-website] Website images and colorbox

2012-11-18 Thread Marc Paré
As I close bugs, I just realized that most of the images on our site are
linked to extra pages where the larger version of these images have been
put. I think the reason we did this (two years ago) was that we did not
really understand the function of colorbox.

Would it be OK, if I change our website images to colorbox objects (only
on those where it makes sense, of course))? For those unfamiliar with
Colorbox it enables people to click on the image and a popup appears
of the original large size image.

This will give our site a more modern look.

Christian -- my only complaint of Colorbox is that there is no
indication that the image can be viewed in its larger format. The
traditional fist with pointing finger is not used in colorbox and uses
the regular mouse pointer (arrow). Maybe this should be pointed out to
the SilverStripe people. Regular visitors to our site will just
eventually get the fact that clicking on the images will get them the
larger views, but, one-time visitors will not know unless there is a
caption on the images that says Click on the image. If the
conventional fist with pointing finger were used there would be no
confusion. Otherwise, Colorbox is great!

Cheers,

Marc

Re: [libreoffice-website] updated infrastructure calculation

2012-11-18 Thread Florian Effenberger

Hi,

the original plan (before the hardware sponsoring for next year was at
the horizon) was to move the backup, databases and data to a storage,
i.e. a machine with lots of hard disks and fast I/O, that is
automatically mirrored to a second machine.

So, the normal servers would only contain software like the web server,
but any data is read from the storage, making it easier to scale and
migrate frontend servers.

Given that we might move to a different hoster by next summer or so,
because of a generous sponsoring offer, I think it's not worthwhile to
invest for this period of time. Rather, we should upgrade our current
infrastructure to the same hard- and software, killing current
bottlenecks, and then have a stable platform to migrate again in summer.

Right now, any of the servers listed has between 750 GB (EQ models) and
3 TB (EX models) of storage. The new machine we might get sponsored can
be scaled from one to eight hard disks, which gives us more flexibility
than we have now.

However, remember, since all hardware is rented (which is *much*
cheaper, even over a long period of time), we cannot just buy any NAS on
the market, but rather need to take what the ISP offers. So, even if
there was a good NAS vendor, we cannot use its products if the ISP does
not offer it. We also need to consider that the NAS should be in the
same datacenter as the servers. Otherwise, we risk traffic payments. We
have 15 TB free per month and server, but if all backups are on external
machines, that will be exhausted quite fast.

[libreoffice-website] Re: Funding Wishlist

2012-11-18 Thread Marc Paré

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder to your teams about this.

We are seriously looking at different teams' wishlists. Please do take a
little time out of your busy schedule and speak to your teams about any
funding for items that you think may be of importance to your team or
the enhance the functioning of your team's work on the project. So far
there are only the website and marketing teams who are working on some
items. Feel free to ask if you have any questions regarding this. At
this point, anything goes, as long as the requests are reasonable. We
need these items for planning more effective funding drives as well as
for budgeting. It would really help if your suggestions come along with
approximate costs where possible.

Cheers,

Marc

Hi everyone,

In trying to better assess the TDF/LibreOffice funding requirements,
we are compiling a wishlist of funding request particular to your
team's needs. While there is no guarantee that this will get you
funding for any particular item, it will help to better assess and
prioritize the project's needs.

I have volunteered to take care of setting up, as well as, document
(facilitate) the proposal from Florian (below)[1]

snip
==

What we effectively need now is a (senseful) wishlist from the
various teams. Think of it as a Christmas wishlist: You write a dozen
things on it, eventually you get two or three, which is fantastic!

Besides the infrastructure and cost for ongoing operations, I can also
imagine some developer machines are required, more travel funding, a
marketing campaign, funds to produce collaterals and swags for giving
them away, and many more.

My proposal is to create a wiki page, asking the various groups to
write down their wishes, and eventually distill a wishlist out of that.

Does that sound senseful? Are there any volunteers for mailing the
various lists and compiling an initial wiki page? (Florian Effenberger)

==

I think the key words in Florian's proposal are senseful-whishlist.
If there are multiple items, you may want to prioritize them in the
right order.

I have set up a wiki page to collect your team's list[2]. Feel free to
add these to the wiki page after discussing it with your team, or, I
can also help out with collecting your suggestions by re-visiting this
thread and then add them to the wiki page.

Cheers,

Marc

not necessarily. However, compared with other countries, renting servers
 is rather cheap here: http://www.hetzner.de/en/**hosting/produktmatrix/**
 rootserver-produktmatrix-exhttp://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produktmatrix/rootserver-produktmatrix-ex

If not I have an interesting Company which has very good prices on

The problem about colocation is, that you first need to buy those
machines, and you are fully responsible for having spare parts and
replacements available. That costs quite a lot, and usually, you have to
sign separate service agreements for 24x7 service, like exchanging parts.

For our rented servers, this is all included.

[libreoffice-website] New Layout for our Plone-Websites

2012-11-18 Thread Andreas Mantke
Hello,

I'm currently diving into a new styling method for Plone websites with
Diazo-Theming. I will try this out in two different approaches:
-- a resources-zip-file with a rules.xml-file, an index.html, images and
css-files and in addition
-- a new Plone-Theme-AddOn that contains this content and could be
installed via buildout.

If somebody with some experience of website-design wants to join me,
please ping me.

Regards,
Andreas
