Normal rule of thumb is that if you make changes to weewx.conf you need to
stop/start weeWX for the changes to take effect. That is true for weeWX,
but in this case we are running wee_database which will be run as a
completely separate process to weeWX. Also, since wee_database will only be
accessing your wview_archive_fixit.sdb database, weeWX could continue to
run and wee_database could be run on wview_binding and there would be no
database contention (assuming of course that weeWX is running using a
binding other than wview_binding for storing archive data). So chances are
you could leave weeWX running. I would play it safe though and stop weeWX
while running wee_database.

By way of 'backed up .conf file' do you mean mean weewx.conf as it was
before you added the wview binding? If so it does not matter, there is no
need to revert to a backed weewx.conf just becasue you added the wview
binding and now want to revert your weewx.conf. You can have dozens of
bindings defined in weewx.conf and weeWX will only use the one you define
at the data_binding config option in [StdArchive] for saving archive data
(you may well have other extensions installed that may use other bindings
for accessing data in other databases but these woudl be defined elsewhere)

But yes after running --fix-strings on your wview data you should have an
archive that you can merge with your weeWX data, of course providing that
the problem with your wview data was in fact null strings in numeric fields.

> BTW, what does weewx do when there are multiple databases defined in

I guess the above comment already answered this, weeWX doesn't care about
unused bindings/databases defined in weewx.conf, weeWX only uses those it
is told to use any others are ignored. So leaving the existing archive data
binding ([[wx_binding]] I expect) and the new one will not be a problem,
the only issue is a cosmetic one of housekeeping; after doing this numerous
times (for whatever reason) you might end up with a lot of unused,
confusing junk in weewx.conf.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Can't use my wview database

2018-01-24 Thread 'loonsailor' via weewx-user
OK, I'm feeling a bit dense, so let me see if I understand. If I am to
modify /etc/weewx/weewx.conf, I should stop weewx, back up weewx.conf, make
the changes you suggest to it, and run wee_database. If all goes as
planned, I will then have a fixed archive, which I can go ahead and combine
with my existing weewx archive (I've been running it for about a month
now), put it in place, go back to the backed up .conf file, and restart
weewx. Is that right?

BTW, what does weewx do when there are multiple databases defined in
.conf? If I leave the existing archive, and add the new one as
wview_archive_sqlite, what does that mean to weewx?

Thanks.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Can't use my wview database

2018-01-24 Thread gjr80
Yep, the correct wee_database syntax
 will be a good
start :) You can't pass wee_database the database name directly, what you
need to do is define a data binding in a .conf file (might as well use
weewx.conf) that uses your database and then use the --binding option with
wee_database to tell wee_database which binding (and hence database) to
use. When you define a binding you (may) also need to define a database
under [Databases]. So if you define [[wview_binding]] and
[[wview_archive_sqlite]] in weewx.conf as follows:

[DataBindings]

[[wview_binding]]
# The database must match one of the sections in [Databases].
# This is likely to be the only option you would want to change.
database = wview_archive_sqlite
# The name of the table within the database
table_name = archive
# The manager handles aggregation of data for historical summaries
manager = weewx.wxmanager.WXDaySummaryManager

[Databases]

[[wview_archive_sqlite]]
database_name = wview-archive-fixit.sdb
database_type = SQLite

you should be able to use the following command:

$ wee_database --fix-strings --binding=wview-binding

[weewx-user] Re: Most reliable mini computer for weeWX?

2018-01-24 Thread vk3anz
Personally I'd be checking on what is causing the 'freezing' because, if it
is something like running out of space for the ram-disk based log files (as
happened to me once), or the lack of space on the SD card (not necessarily
from WeeWx itself but from other files being written) or even a failure
with the SD card (a portion that is not written to for about a month after
the boot) then those might well be transferred to the new device.

exactly! we need an mqtt.py that contains an uploader, a driver, and a
service all in one package, as a single extension. then you can use the
part for the purpose you need. the maxbotix extension does part of this -
it is both a driver and a service. if you have a station already, you load
it as a driver to augment that. if you want to run multiple weewx
instances, then you can run it as a driver. owfs is the same way.

so if someone is keen to make this happen before i get around to it (my
plate is beyond full right now), take a look at the weewx-maxbotix
extension for a simple example.

Absolutely - I would like to generate MQTT data from a variety of low-cost
sensors and write them to a secondary weewx db using an extension, while
'still' using my VP2 weather station for most of the weather information.

Currently I do this by jumping through hoops a bit:
 - generate a JSON-formatted file on a raspi with a few sensors
 - have that raspi serve the file up via nginx
 - wrote a weewx sensor that grabs the url from the raspi and seeds my
second db's archive with that data

I'd like to simplify things by replacing the pi nginx and the custom 'grab
a url' extension with just subscribing to an aggregated MQTT topic with
data coming from that raspi, plus (someday) other sensors like things
attached to nodeMCU cards and the like.

So I'm hoping for a scenario that seeds a secondary db from a MQTT topic,
in effect. Kinda like the MQTT 'out' extension Matthew wrote, just in
reverse.

WeeWX can run with one driver only; however, it can run with an (essentially)
unlimited number of services. So folks with an existing station that want to
include data from another source typically do so by running the driver for
their station and a service for the other source.

There are a couple of variations of drivers which read MQTT subscriptions
already. I am not sure what the advantage of a MQTT subscription *service*
is, over a driver.

My version is here: https://github.com/morrowwm/weewxMQTT

   1. Save your old version of weeplot/genplot.py someplace.
   2. Replace it with the attached version. It has been instrumented to log
the label values the plotting engine is receiving.
   3. Then run wee_reports
   4. Post the resultant log. The instrumented version posts "LOG_ERR" to
make it easy to find the posts in the log on the Mac! Should be in
   /var/log/system.log.
   5. Restore your original version of genplot.py

Hopefully we can localize where the problem is.

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Question about latitude/longitude

2018-01-24 Thread gjr80
I actually sat watching this for about an hour last night noting the change as
each new plot was generated. The majority of plots had parts of an SQL
statement in the plot label, some had seemingly random characters and one had
what looked like a file path, I took note of the path as it clearly had nothing
to do with weeWX '/System/Library/Frameworks/VideoToolbox'. Occasionally the
plot label had no extra (visible) characters added to it ie it appeared correct.

I also noted similar things happening with the week, month and year humidity
plots though they are generated less frequently so the changes in label occur
less often. I can't say I have seen anything else obviously wrong on the site.

The InfluxDB extension is not a substitute database for sqlite or MySQL.
Instead, it is an *uploader*, much like the Weather Underground uploader.
It takes the data and posts it to your InfluxDB database, using the
InfluxDB http "line protocol."

Why do you say that the extension is ignoring your correction values?

Re: [weewx-user] Re: Most reliable mini computer for weeWX?

2018-01-24 Thread Thomas Keffer
Low-powered boxes, in increasing price order:

For the money, the RPi is hard to beat.

Next up would be an entry-level Intel NUC. These can be as inexpensive as
$130, plus RAM and a disk. Both Vince and I have bought these and they have
proven quite reliable. Has a fan that occasionally goes on. If you get a
powerful enough one, they can easily be run as a workstation.

Another inexpensive low-powered box I've had good luck with are the MiniBox
"value systems ." I have on
that has been running continuously for about 5 years with no problems.

If you're willing to spend more, I can recommend CompuLab's "Fit-PC"
series. They are extremely rugged and
dependable. Dead silent (no fan!). About 5 watts total power consumption.
They are built to industrial standards: I bought a fit-PC Slim in 2008, and
it has been running 7x24 ever since with absolutely no problems. Their "
fitlet2 " is probably the best
deal right now, about $315, plus RAM and a disk.

I use repurposed thin clients, e.g. HP T5740 with a small SATA SSD - intel Atom
CPU, 2gb RAM plus it’s fanless and consumes about 10 Watts.
Find them cheap on that famous auction site!

Wow. This is disturbing. The daily summaries are not even used by the
plots, so I'm not sure where those SQL statements could be coming from.

A few questions:

   1. Is the problem confined to the outside humidity plot? Or, does it
   ever occur on another plot?
   2. Is this a stock weeWX install? Or, have you installed any extensions?
   3. Could you please post the StdReport section of your weewx.conf file?

[weewx-user] Re: mqtt extension TLS required ?

2018-01-24 Thread mwall
for all of you mqtt-philes out there who struggle to figure out what is
actually being sent... what topic does sensor x use? is it json data or
just plain text? is retain turned on? when was the last data from sensor
x?

try the mqtt websocket client from christoph schaebel and hivemq:

http://www.hivemq.com/demos/websocket-client/

details are here:

https://www.hivemq.com/blog/full-featured-mqtt-client-browser

and the source is here:

https://github.com/hivemq/hivemq-mqtt-web-client

it requires that you add websocket support when you build your mosquitto
broker, but the result is well worth it. you can install the websocket
client on the server where the broker runs, or just keep a websocket client
on your laptop or development machine then point it at whatever broker you
are trying to diagnose.

thank you christoph and hivemq for making this available under the apache
license!

So sensors through mysensors hub to MQTT broker, and then somehow
 into weewx. In August.

 Keith,

The first thing I think of when I hear odd characters in plots is a
font issue; however, font issues usually manifest themselves as changes to
extended characters such as degree signs etc. That doesn't appear to be
 the
case here. When I look at your site just now I see the title of your
 yearly
humidity plot as 'Outside HumidityMIN(usUnits)', whilst your daily plot
 has
an umlaut, cents symbol and Y umlaut appended to 'Outside Humidity'. Week
and month plot labels are correct. Given the different labels I am not
sure this is a case of extra characters being added by incorrect editing
 of
skin.conf, if that was the case the labels would all be identical. One
thing to keep in mind though is that by default the yearly plots are only
generated at midnight each day so you need to delete them to force
reeneration to show up any changes.

Notwithstanding could you post your Standard skin.conf in its entirety
as Andrew asked. Please don't open or edit the file but rather include the
file as an attachment, note you may need to append .txt to the file name
 to
let you post it if google gets upset. Otherwise feel free to email it to
 me

Otherwise feel free to email it to
 me
 at gjroderick (at) gmail.com

Just out of curiosity, and starting to clutch at straws

a) do you get the same result if you run wee_reports manually???
b) can you run manually with radar image commented out (that is a very long
URL)

2018-01-24 Thread Glenn McKechnie
In case they have gone back to umlauts or whatever by the time someone else
visits http://www.herriage.com/weewx/index.html.

I copied 2 outHumidity images from there that have sql strings after the
title, or in its place. Specifically ', sum(windspeed) FROM archive WHERE
dateTime>' and 'SELECT * FROM archive_day_windGustDir WHERE d'
Something is bleeding over but I can't find those strings in my
/usr/share/weewx or /etc/weewx directories? Another skin perhaps, or an
errant paste into one of weewx files?

Images are attached

Gary, Andrew,

Sorry it took so long to get back here. Been busy with another project.
Here's the skin.conf file.
