[WestNileNet] Science cafe, IPR and access to medicines

2010-08-25 Thread christine munduru
Dear members,
This is to let you know that our next science cafe will be on 4th September at
Jose's place from 4pm.
The proposed topic is Intellectual property Rights(IPR) and access to
medicines.

You will be able to know the difference between generic medicines and brand
medicines( why medicines from India or China cost less than those from US, UK,
Germany etc) and how the politics between the two limits access to medicines
especially for a poor country like Uganda. You will also be able to understand
the implications of the draft Uganda counterfeit bill on the ordinary Ugandan
if
passed as it is. Afew key issues about the global pharmacuetical politics and
access to medicines especially ARVs in Africa will be tackled , time allowing.

Recently, the media reported MPs Okumu Reagan and Tom Butiime asking the
National Medical Stores officer why the drugs from UK, US, Germany costs more
than those from China and India, the NMS official being a technical man even
failed to answer this question. Many of our MPs are that ignorant about the
issues and yet they are going to pass this bill without understanding the
content. This is our chance to be informed.

The facilitator will be Moses Mulumba, a legal expert with Coalition for Health
Promotion and Social Development who has been fighting to change the
problematic
clauses of the counterfeit bill. According to media reports, some of the
reguired changes have been made.

If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks
Christine

Christine,

Good initiative and way forward in bridging knowledge gap but; my fear is that,
many of us you would want to target will be at Namboole watching international
qualifier football game between Uganda Cranes and Angola. I would suggest you
reschedule to Sunday 5th September if possible.

Regards,
Robert

2010-08-25 Thread banduga ismail
Dear Munduru,
The topics under discussion are very important and interesting. Some of us do
not have the opportunity to attend these science cafes because we live
upcountry, Arua, Yumbe, Moyo, Kitgum etc.
A humble request: Can someone present during the discussions take note and make
a synaptic summary that can be posted on this net. This will give chance
to members who for reasons mentioned miss the cafes to acquire knowledge and
follow the discussions. Many of the issues affect everyone of us, thus good to
have information on.

Regards,
Ismail

Thanks Robert for this feedback. I have no problem pushing it to 5th September.
It will not make sense if people are not around. I will let the facilitator
know
and find  if he can be around on 5th. I will keep members posted. Alternatively
if he is not around we can select another topic and this will be covered later.
Other suggestions are also welcomed.

Thanks

Thanks for this information and all the efforts you put towards this. The

Good evening Ladies and gentlemen,

As you may all be aware, due to an avoidable circumstances our popular westnile
night was put off last month because of the security situation then and of
course to also join the families of those who lost their loved ones during that
period of mourning.

However between that period and now we have been having several discussions on
how we are going to ensure the safety of lives and property during the
subsequent events and the management of Pa Lui and the police have come up
guidelines for the next events starting this Friday which may be rather
inconveniencing.

 * No big bags will be allowed at the venue( ladies sorry about that)
 * Jungle boots and big jackets will also not be allowed in the club
 * Every one will be subjected to thorough checks by the police and the clubs
security.
The police has also committed them selves to have pre event venue cleaning
using the police canine unit and bomb experts and several others.
Please see attached communication/commitment from the police for more details.

Kind regards and see you there!

Roger Opigo
