Dear John, we have been struggling with this Miniester of kenya with the advocates in Nairobi on that issue, he even came back and caused more problems instead. We thought that good treatment he received could have changed his thinking but wapi!!. We thought he could even champion this cause to highlight some of these issues since he is now out of the post and could see things differently but it didnt work out. I think when you are obssessed with wrong things, it is difficult for you to think positively. Remember the cost of treating him abroad could have saved many lives in Kenya if that was used to put the necessary infrastracture in place in kenya instead. Dear Vasco, My thinking tend to differ in that the truth is, the accidents have occurred and lives have been lost, not only few but many. That alone is a cause enough for us to react. Whether the driver or the management is on the wrong should not be a question for us to investigate because as a passanger, your safety is in the hands of the bus owners, the passenger doesnt drive and therefore I am not sure if the burden really lies on us to prove this but what we can prove is accidents have occured and people have died. Therefore I think such a memo is in order for us to show concern, perhaps we just needed to fine tune. But we seemed to have all chickened out, and without a leader, it would be difficult to know who is writing this letter and what the interest is, it cannot be an individual letter, otherwise you risk being labelled by the same people you think you are trying to help. I think it is important for people who want to write memos to get facts about these accidents and state the facts in such memos, rather than the generalized assumption that the owners are responsible for these accidents. Out of about 10 accidents in which these buses are involved, what has been the location where these accidents happen and at what general time do these ACCIDENTS happen. It is my contention that we rather establish the facts of these accidents before rushing into writing any memo to the bus owners with such threats as boycotting riding the buses or threatening demonstrations. If indeed we are concerned about these accidents as expressed in this forum, then the desire to get the true facts of these accidents would be unprecedented.
