Re: [Wiki-research-l] [Xmldatadumps-l] Proposed Project Grant for browsing and downloading Wikimedia datasets - Balchivist 2.0

2021-03-16 Thread Sebastian Hellmann

Hi all,

On 15.03.21 02:57, Hydriz Scholz wrote:

integrate a "watchlist" feature that can automatically notify users
when new datasets are available.

Not sure, if this is a killer feature for human users, i.e. mailbox
notification. We are using the Wikimedia Dumps since 13 years now for
DBpedia and implemented a download function [1]. However, this is not
running optimal. I think it still uses the links in the HTML page to
find the download URLs.

The way we implemented it is: download (2021-01-01) and then it tries to
download the dumps from the beginning of the month and fails if it don't
find some and you need to re-run later.

Would be nice to have an API to check for availability and define sets.
We are in the progress of open-sourcing databus.dbpedia.org which is a
registry offering this functionality for any files, i.e. shasums,
downloadUrls, API for querying, machine-readable and actionable
licenses, etc. We will put the wikimedia dumps on the bus eventually.

For me/us, we would value the ability to work with them programatically
over yet another notification, but others might have different opinions.

[Wiki-research-l] [ANN] DBpedia Archivo - Call to improve the web of ontologies

2020-12-07 Thread Sebastian Hellmann

Apologies for cross-posting

Dear all,

We are proud to announce DBpedia Archivo (https://archivo.dbpedia.org)
an augmented ontology archive and interface to implement FAIRer
ontologies. Each ontology is rated with 4 stars measuring basic FAIR
features. We discovered 890 ontologies reaching on average 1.95 out of 4
stars. Many of them have no or unclear licenses and have issues w.r.t.
retrieval and parsing.

# Community action on individual ontologies

We would like to call on all ontology maintainers and consumers to help
us increase the average star rating of the web of ontologies by fixing
and improving its ontologies. You can easily check an ontology at
https://archivo.dbpedia.org/info. If you are an ontology maintainer just
release a patched version - archivo will automatically pick it up 8
hours later. If you are a user of an ontology and want your consumed
data to become FAIRer, please inform the ontology maintainer about the
issues found with Archivo.

The star rating is very basic and only requires fixing small things.
However, theimpact on technical and legal usability can be immense.

# Community action on all ontologies (quality, FAIRness, conformity)

Archivo is extensible and allows contributions to give consumers a
central place to encode their requirements. We envision fostering
adherence to standards and strengthening incentives for publishers to
build a better (FAIRer) web of ontologies.

1.

   SHACL (https://www.w3.org/TR/shacl/, co-edited by DBpedia’s CTO D.
Kontokostas) enables easy testing of ontologies. Archivo offers free
SHACL continuous integration testing for ontologies. Anyone can
implement their SHACL tests and add them to the SHACL library on
Github. We believe that there are many synergies, i.e. SHACL tests
for your ontology are helpful for others as well.

2.

We are looking for ontology experts to join DBpedia and discuss
further validation (e.g. stars) to increase FAIRness and quality of
ontologies. We are forming a steering committee and also a PC for
the upcoming Vocarnival at SEMANTiCS 2021. Please message
   hellm...@informatik.uni-leipzig.de
   <mailto:hellm...@informatik.uni-leipzig.de>if you would like to
join. We would like to extend the Archivo platform with relevant
visualisations, tests, editing aides, mapping management tools and
   quality checks.

# How does Archivo work?

Each week Archivo runs several discovery algorithms to scan for new
ontologies. Once discovered Archivo checks them every 8 hours. When
changes are detected, Archivo downloads and rates and archives the
latest snapshot persistently on the DBpedia Databus.

# Archivo's mission

Archivo's mission is to improve FAIRness (findability, accessibility,
interoperability, and reusability) of all available ontologies on the
Semantic Web. Archivo is not a guideline, it is fully automated,
machine-readable and enforces interoperability with its star rating.

- Ontology developers can implement against Archivo until they reach
more stars. The stars and tests are designed to guarantee the
interoperability and fitness of the ontology.

- Ontology users can better find, access and re-use ontologies.
Snapshots are persisted in case the original is not reachable anymore
adding a layer of reliability to the decentral web of ontologies.

Let’s all join together to make the web of ontologies more reliable and
stable,

Johannes Frey, Denis Streitmatter, Fabian Götz, Sebastian Hellmann and
Natanael Arndt

# Dutch National Knowledge Graph Track

Following the DBpedia FlexiFusion approach, we are currently
flexi-fusing a huge, dbpedia-style knowledge graph that will connect
many Linked Data sources and data silos relevant to the country of the
Netherlands. We hope that this will eventually crystallize a
well-connected sub-community linked open data (LOD) cloud in the same
manner as DBpedia crystallized the original LOD cloud with some
improvements (you could call it LOD Mark II). Data and hackathon details
will be announced on 21st of September.

# Improve DBpedia Track

A community track, where everybody can participate and contribute in
improving existing DBpedia components, in particular the extraction
framework, the mappings, the ontology, data quality test cases, new
extractors, links and other extensions. Best individual contributions
will be acknowledged on the DBpedia website by anointing the WebID/Foaf
profile.

(not part of the hackathon, pre-announcement)

For the DBpedia Spring Event 2021, we are planning an Open Innovation
Track, where DBpedians can showcase their applications. This endeavour
will not be part of the hackathon as we are looking for significant
showcases with development effort of months & years built on the core
infrastructure of DBpedia such as the SPARQL endpoint, the data, lookup,

Apologies for cross-posting

Dear all,
Due to current circumstances, the SEMANTiCS Onsite Conference 2020 had,
unfortunately, to be postponed till September 2021. To bridge the gap
until 2021, DBpedia, the Platform Linked Data Netherlands (PLDN) and

2020. We set up an exciting themed program around ‘Knowledge Graphs in
Action: DBpedia, Linked Geodata and Geo-information Integration’. This
new event is a combination of two already existing ones: the DBpedia
Community Meeting, which is regularly held as part of the SEMANTiCS, and
the annual Spatial Linked Data conference organised by EuroSDR and PLDN.
We fused both together and as a bonus, we added a track about
Geo-information Integration hosted by EuroSDR. For the joint opening
session, we recruited four amazing keynote speakers to kick the event off.

The annual SEMANTiCS conference is the meeting place for professionals
who make semantic computing work, understand its benefits, and encounter
its limitations. Every year, SEMANTiCS attracts information managers,
IT-architects, software engineers and researchers from a wide spectrum
of organisations ranging from SMEs and non-profit organizations, to
public administration bodies, to the largest companies in the world.
Attendees learn from industry experts and top researchers about emerging
trends and topics in the fields of semantic software, including
enterprise data, linked data & open data strategies, methodologies in
knowledge modelling and text & data analytics. The SEMANTiCS community
is highly diverse; attendees routinely interlinking areas such as
knowledge management, technical documentation, e-commerce, big data
analysis, enterprise search, document management, business intelligence
and enterprise vocabulary management.

Given the success of last year’s conference in Amsterdam, which
attracted more than 370 attendees from 28 countries, SEMANTiCS 2018 is
bound to continue a long tradition of bringing together a community from
around the world. There will be presentations on industry
implementations, use case prototypes, best practices, panels, papers and
posters to discuss semantic systems in a broad range of regular as well
as informal settings. SEMANTiCS addresses problems common among
information managers, software engineers, IT-architects and various
specialist departments working to develop, implement and evaluate
semantic software systems.
The SEMANTiCS program will provide a rich mix of technical talks, panel
discussions on emerging topics and presentations by people who make
things work - just like you. In addition, attendees will have a unique
opportunity to network with experts in a variety of fields. These
relationships provide great value to organisations as they encounter
technical challenges in any stage of implementation. The expertise
gained by SEMANTiCS attendees has a long-term impact on their careers
and organisations. These factors make SEMANTiCS the key event across
Europe for a diverse community of industry leaders and academic experts
alike.
Following the success of the previous year, this year’s SEMANTiCS will
also again feature a special Data Science track, which offer a unique
opportunity to bring together researchers and practitioners interested
in the intersection of Semantic Technologies, Linked Data and Data
Science and provide a platform to present their ideas and discuss the
most important scientific, technical and socio-economic challenges in
this emerging field.

SEMANTiCS 2018 particularly welcomes submissions on the following key
topics:

*Web Semantics, Linked (Open) Data & schema.org
*Corporate Knowledge Graphs
*Knowledge Integration and Language Technologies
*Data Quality Management
*Economics of Data, Data Services and Data Ecosystems
*Ethics and Explainable AI

Posters & Demos Track

The Posters & Demonstrations Track invites innovative work in progress,
late-breaking research and innovation results, and smaller contributions
in all fields related to the broadly understood Semantic Web. These
include submissions on innovative applications with impact on end users
such as demos of solutions that users may test or that are yet in the
conceptual phase, but are worth discussing, and also applications, use
cases or pieces of code that may attract developers and potential
research or business partners. This also concerns new data sets made
publicly available.

The informal setting of the Posters & Demonstrations Track encourages
participants to present innovations to the research community, business
users and find new partners or clients and engage in discussions about
the presented work. Such discussions can be invaluable inputs for the
future work of the presenters, while offering conference participants an
effective way to broaden their knowledge of the emerging research trends
and to network with other researchers.

Poster and demo submissions should consist of a paper that describe the
work, its contribution to the field or novelty aspects. Submissions must
be original and must not have been submitted for publication elsewhere.

Accepted papers will be published in HTML (RASH) in CEUR and, as such,
the camera-ready version of the papers will be required in HTML,
following the poster and demo guidelines (https://goo.gl/3BEpV7). Papers
should be submitted through EasyChair

(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=semantics2017 and should be
less than 2200 words in length (equivalent to 4 pages), including the
whole content of the paper.

For the initial reviewing phase, authors may submit a PDF version of the
paper following any layout. After acceptance, authors are required to
submit the camera-ready in HTML (RASH).

Submissions will be reviewed by experienced and knowledgeable
researche

2016-07-12 Thread Sebastian Hellmann
The Vocabulary Carnival at SEMANTiCS 2016 is a unique opportunity for
vocabulary publishers to showcase and share their work, meet the growing
community of vocabulary publishers and users, and build useful semantic,
technical and social links.

*When?* The Vocabulary Carnival is part of the SEMANTiCS programme with
the Carnival Minute Madness on the 13th of September and on the
industrial marketplace.

*What kind of vocabularies do we expect?*

 *

*Any kind!* For this event we use a very open definition of what a
vocabulary is. Ontologies, classifications, thesauri, concept and
metadata schemes, whatever their format, in RDF or not, are all welcome.

 *

*Bootstrap your new Vocabulary project:* At the carnival you can
present your ideas and early stage vocabs to find the right people
to get the Vocab discussion going. We require at least a project web
   site.

*What is your benefit of submitting?*

 *

*attention*: make people aware of your work

 *

*feedback*: a room full of other vocabulary creators will guarantee
   expert feedback

 *

*linking*: discover links from your vocabulary to others on-site

*How to submit your Vocabulary to the Carnival?*

1.

Make sure your vocabulary is accessible on the Web through a public URI.

2.

Communicate your intention to participate at
_https://goo.gl/mV3VpZ_ by joining and posting your vocabulary
link and writing “See you at the Carnival in Leipzig” or send an
email to monika.sola...@cs.ox.ac.uk , with subject “Vocabulary
   Carnival”.

3.

   Register to

SEMANTiCS:_http://2016.semantics.cc/registration/_

4.

Submissions will be handled on a *first come, first serve basis*

*Are there any technical requirements?*

Your vocabulary submission will be evaluated in accordance to the
following criteria:

 *

*Reusability* - Which vocabularies and/or ontology design patterns
have been reused in its development? Has it been mapped, aligned,
imported within other ontologies yet? If not, where do you foresee
   potential reuse?

 *

*Value addition* - How does the vocabulary provide value addition
for the intended project or domain as compared to previous efforts
and to Semantic Web in general?

 *

*Design and Technical quality* - how do the ontologies incorporate
best practices in design, i.e., using ontology design patterns or
   extending from upper level ontologies?

 *

*Documentation* - does the vocabulary provide both human and machine
readable documentation using for e.g., rdfs:label, rdfs:comment and
   HTML documentation?

 *

*Availability*: We expect your vocabulary (terminology, taxonomy,
ontology, etc.) to be hosted on the Web at a persistent URI (PURL,
w3id, ODI) and with an appropriate licence specification. If it is
   not Linked Data or uploaded
   to_http://lov.okfn.org_
you can get technical help and advise at the conference.

 *

*Usage*: Which academic/industrial projects have adopted the
vocabulary? Which datasets have been annotated using the vocabulary?

*At the SEMANTiCS 2016 Conference:*

 *

Prepare a poster (max format A0) presenting your vocabulary:
description, purpose, history and link to its publication page. Your
description of the vocabulary must include the above criteria.

 *

Present your poster in the dedicated space at SEMANTiCS conference.

 *

Brace yourself to participate in the Vocabulary Minute Madness,
where every vocabulary will have one minute to convince of its
usefulness and quality. Sporting your vocabulary colors at this
occasion is optional, but will be much appreciated.

 *

An independent jury will select the best vocabulary poster and
   presentation.

*Vocabulary Carnival and LOV*

 *

If your vocabulary is already recorded
   at_http://lov.okn.org_ ,
check its record to see if everything is OK. Ping the LOV curators
if something is missing or inaccurate, or if you brush up a brand
new version for the Carnival. If you think your vocabulary is
LOV-able but not yet recorded, submit its URI

at_http://lov.okfn.org/dataset/lov/suggest/_

 *

If your vocabulary is not yet meeting the technical requirements to
be included in LOV, and you wish it could, we can help you to
   achieve that during the Carnival.

*About the Vocabulary Carnival*

The Vocabulary Carnival will be hosted at the SEMANTiCS conference, Sep
12-15 2016

SEMANTiCS 2016 is a major venue for industrial innovation and features
an industry & transfer tutorial and workshop program addressing the
diverse practical interests of its audience. This program is intended to
offer a rich diversity of high quality information valuable to
conference attendees and local participants seeking to pick up new
skills and stay up-to-date regarding the latest developments in the
community. We encourage submissions of proposals on all topics in the
general areas of SEMANTiCS 2016 and proposals bridging or introducing
new perspectives in these areas. Tutorials and workshops may incorporate
panel discussions, lightning talks, meetings, networking or hands-on
sessions, hackathons, and other practical formats where applicable.
Rooms for business or project meetings are available upon request as well.

#SEMANTiCS 2016 Tutorials and Workshop Scope & Goals
Satellite events at SEMANTiCS 2016 allow your organisation or project to
push your topics and gain increased visibility. The workshop and
tutorials will be announced on the SEMANTiCS and DBpedia website
(tutorials only) and will be seen by all participants. SEMANTiCS 2016
industry & transfer tutorials and workshops are incubators for
industrial and scientific communities that form and share a particular
research and development agenda. They provide a forum for presenting
widely recognized contributions and findings to a diverse and
knowledgeable community. Furthermore, the event can be used as a
dissemination activity in the scope of large research projects or as a
closed format for research/commercial project consortia meetings.

#Setup and requirements of SEMANTiCS Workshops and Tutorials
SEMANTiCS 2016 workshops and tutorials may be either half or full day
long. Workshops will be held on the day before the main SEMANTiCS 2016
conference (September 12, 2016), Tutorials will be held after the
conference (September 15, 2016) in parallel to the DBpedia Day.
Participation in SEMANTiCS 2016 workshops and tutorials is typically
free. Full service will be provided (Coffee, Lunch, Room, etc.). In
order to cover cost, organiser can choose to pay a cover charge per
participant or buy one of the sponsorship packages that include a
workshop slot (http://semantics.cc/sponsorship-packages). In exceptional
cases, we can also levy a ticket fee from participants.

*Overview and Topics*

The standardization and adoption of Semantic Web technologies has
resulted in a variety of assets, including an unprecedented volume of
data being semantically enriched and systems and services, which consume
or publish this data. Although gathering, processing and publishing data
is a step towards further adoption of Semantic Web, quality does not yet
play a central role in these assets (e.g., data lifecycle,
system/service development).

Quality management essentially refers to activities and tasks involved
to guarantee a certain level of consistency and to meet the quality
requirements for the assets. In general, quality management consists of
the following four phases and components: (i) quality planning, (ii)
quality control, (iii) quality assurance and (iv) quality improvement.

The quality planning phase in the Semantic Web typically involves the
design of procedures, strategies and policies to support the management
of the assets. The quality control and assurance components have their
primary aim in preventing errors and to meet quality requirements
pertaining to the Semantic Web standards. A core part for both
components are quality assessment methods which provide the necessary
input for the controlling and assurance tasks.

Quality assessment of Semantic Web Assets (data, services and systems),
in particular, presents new challenges that were not handled before in
other research areas. Thus, adopting existing approaches for data
quality assessment is not a straightforward solution. These challenges
are related to the openness of the Semantic Web, the diversity of the
information and the unbounded, dynamic set of autonomous data sources,
publishers and consumers (legal and software agents). Additionally,
detecting the quality of available data sources and making the
information explicit is yet another challenge. Moreover, noise in one
data set, or missing links between different data sets, propagates
throughout the Web of Data, and imposes great challenges on the data
value chain.

In case of systems and services, different implementations follow the
specifications for RDF and SPARQL to varying extents, or even propose
and offer new, non-standardized extensions. This causes strong
incompatibilities between systems, e.g., between the used SPARQL
features in the query engines and support features in RDF stores. The
potential heterogeneity and incompatibility poses several challenges for
the quality assessments in and for such systems and services.

Eventually, quality improvement methods are used to further enhance the
value of the Semantic Web Assets. One important step to improve the
quality of data is identifying the root cause of the problem and then
designing corresponding data improvement solutions. These solutions
select the most effective and efficient strategies and related set of
techniques and tools to improve quality. Quality improvement metrics for
products and services entails understanding and improving operational
processes and establishing valid and reliable service performance measures.

This Special Issue is addressed to those members of the community
interested in providing novel methodologies or frameworks in managing,
assessing, monitoring, maintaining and improving the quality of the
Semantic Web data, services and systems and also introduce tools and
user interfaces which can effectively assist in this management.

The annual SEMANTiCS conference is the meeting place for professionals
who make semantic computing work, who understand its benefits and
encounter its limitations. Every year, SEMANTiCS attracts information
managers, IT-architects, software engineers and researchers from
organisations ranging from NPOs, through public administrations to the
largest companies in the world. Attendees learn from industry experts
and top researchers about emerging trends and topics in the fields of
semantic software, enterprise data, linked data & open data strategies,
methodologies in knowledge modelling and text & data analytics. The
SEMANTiCS community is highly diverse; attendees have responsibilities
in interlinking areas like knowledge management, technical
documentation, e-commerce, big data analytics, enterprise search,
document management, business intelligence and enterprise vocabulary
management.
The success of last year’s conference in Leipzig with more than 230
attendees from 22 countries proves that SEMANTiCS 2015 will continue a
long tradition of bringing together colleagues from around the world.
There will be presentations on industry implementations, use case
prototypes, best practices, panels, papers and posters to discuss
semantic systems in birds-of-a-feather sessions as well as informal
settings. SEMANTICS addresses problems common among information
managers, software engineers, IT-architects and various specialist
departments working to develop, implement and/or evaluate semantic
software systems.
The SEMANTiCS program is a rich mix of technical talks, panel
discussions of important topics and presentations by people who make
things work - just like you. In addition, attendees can network with
experts in a variety of fields. These relationships provide great value
to organisations as they encounter subtle technical issues in any stage
of implementation. The expertise gained by SEMANTiCS attendees has a
long-term impact on their careers and organisations. These factors make
SEMANTiCS for our community the major industry related event across Europe.

Through the use of linked data, there is the potential to solve many issues currently faced by the language resources community. In particular, there is significant evidence that RDF allows better data integration than existing formats,[1] in part through a rich ecosystem of tools provided by the Semantic Web, such as query[2] and federation.[3] In addition, the Semantic Web has already been used by several authors[4] [5] to define data categories and enable better resource interoperability. The utility of this method of publishing language resources has lead to the interest of a significant sub-community in linguistics.[6]The focus of this special issue is language resources including language data such as written or spoken corpora and lexica, multimodal resources, grammars, terminology or domain specific databases and dictionaries, ontologies, multimedia databases, etc. [7] In addition, we require that these resources are published as linked data using appropriate technologies such as RDF and OWL. Furthermore, we will also accept submission of resources used to assist and augment language processing applications, even if the nature of the resource is not deeply entrenched in Linguistics, but only as long as the usefulness is well motivated (DBpedia redirects and disambiguation pages are one example[8] ). Overall, our vision is to boost a decentralized, collaborative, interlinked and interoperable Web of Data[9] in the area of multilingual language resources. Topics of the callThe current state of the Linguistic Linked Open Data (LLOD) Cloud and inclusion criteriaValidation procedures for linguistic linked data setsBest practices of multilingual linked open dataLegal issues relating to the licensing of linguistic linked dataSemantic annotationLanguage resources, newly published as linked dataOntologies related to multilinguality and language technology. Submission instructions This special issue will especially welcome Full papers, Linked Dataset Descriptions and  Descriptions of Ontologies as specified here: http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/authors Please write us an email first before preparing submissions for other submission types.Full papers Full papers contain original research results. These submissions will be reviewed along the usual dimensions for research contributions which include originality, significance of the results, and quality of writing. Any submission that is an extension of previous work must clearly declare the reference and justify the scientific progress of the extension. Title: Call for papers - SWJ
Multilingual Linked Open Data (MLOD) 2012Data Post ProceedingsSpecial Issue of the Semantic Web Journalhttp://www.semantic-web-journal.net/content/suggestions-special-issuesWorkshop homepage: http://sabre2012.infai.org/mlodeImage of the Linguistic LOD Cloud: http://linguistics.okfn.org/resources/llod/Scope of the call:Researchers in NLP and Linguistics are currently discovering Semantic Web technologies and employing them to answer novel research questions. Linked data set and ontology descriptionsWe invite submissions of data sets and a 4-6 page written description of the data.  This special issue follows the MLODE 2012 Workshop[10] in Leipzig and in addition to submissions by participants of the workshop we also strongly encourage novel submissions. Re: [Wiki-research-l] Disambiguation systems

2011-11-21 Thread Sebastian Hellmann

Hi Rami,
DBpedia Spotlight has a direct disambiguation function:
http://dbpedia.org/spotlight
You can mark the detected entities you would like to have disambiguated
with [[ ]] in the text, I think
The tools is also Internationalized right now for several languages,
although I am not sure what the current status of that is.

Of course there are many other tools that probably do the same. You
could check the related work section here:
http://blog.semantic-web.at/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/p1_mendes.pdf

and also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge_extraction#Entity_Linking

If you need to interchange services easily and want to have a unified
interface, there is the NLP Interchange Format, which is :
http://nlp2rdf.org/nif-1-0#toc-named-entity-recognition-and-entity-linking

Note that I have no actual hands-on experience with the services.
Somebody else could answer that part better :)

All the best,
Sebastian

Hi All,

opinion regarding any previous experiences dealing with any of the
different available systems. I tried till now Wikipedia miner, and the
problem it can not detect most of the _real_ ambiguous situations. For
example, the American town called

Accuracy can be traded in case the system is really fast as we are planning
to process huge amount of data.

Re: [Wiki-research-l] Summaries of recent Wikipedia research

2011-06-10 Thread Sebastian Hellmann
Hi,
I think you might add a lot more. Out of interest I searched the papers
of the largest semantic web conference (ISWC 2010 ) once for mentions of
"DBpedia".
The easiest way to it is to use google if the publication are available
on the internet:
"dbpedia site:http://iswc2010.semanticweb.org/pdf/";
http://www.google.com/#q=dbpedia+site:http://iswc2010.semanticweb.org/pdf/&hl=en
this yields 5 result pages (4 with 10 entries and 1 with a single entry)
with a total of 41 papers mentioning DBpedia.
That is about a third of accepted papers ( 132 )
Of course I really never checked in detail, what the "mentions" where
about, as google just looks for the keyword (could be e.g. citations).
I just wanted to present my method of searching.

You might consider adding papers about/using DBpedia also, as research
using DBpedia can be considered (in most cases) research using Wikipedia.
They fall in the same category as for example these:
Milne, David and Witten, Ian .H. An effective, low-cost measure of
semantic relatedness obtained from Wikipedia links.
Adrian Iftene and Alexandra Balahur-Dobrescu Named Entity Relation
Mining using Wikipedia
Alexander E. Richman, Patrick Schone Mining Wiki Resources for
Multilingual Named Entity Recognition
and many more...

Although I did not read up on the actual criteria you used for inclusion.

Regards,
Sebastian

[Wiki-research-l] OKCon 2011: Call for Participation

2011-02-14 Thread Sebastian Hellmann

[Apologies for cross-posting]*

*The 6th Annual Open Knowledge Conference (OKCon) will take place on
30th June -- 1st July 2011 in Berlin.

Website: http://okcon.org/2011 <http://okcon.org/2011/cfp/>
Call for participation: http://okcon.org/2011/cfp/

We are looking forward for your participation! It would be great to meet
you at OKCon 2011 in Berlin.
Please get in touch with us at ok...@okfn.org <mailto:ok...@okfn.org> if
you want to participate, have any questions or suggestions.

There are several ways to participate (the deadline is /May 1st/).
Please have a look at the *How To Participate *Section below. *

*Regards,
Sebastian Hellmann*

*
*
Announcement*

OKCon is a wide-ranging conference that brings together individuals and
organizations from across the open knowledge spectrum for two days of
presentations, workshops and exchange of ideas.

Open knowledge promises significant social and economic benefits in a
wide range of areas from governance to science, culture to technology.
Opening up access to content and data can radically increase access and
reuse, bridge gaps, improve transparency and thus foster innovation and
increase societal welfare.

In Berlin, we will be surrounded by a variety of interesting
communities. These include open access and open bibliography communities
to the OpenStreetMap, hacker and artist groups to the various free
culture and commons research communities. We look forward to jointly
discussing with all of them the latest developments and aspects of
open knowledge in their work.

This is a time of great change. In addition to high profile initiatives
such as Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap and the Human Genome Project, there is
enormous growth among open knowledge projects and communities at all
levels and in many countries. Moreover, in the last year, many
governments across the world have begun opening up their data.

And it doesn't stop there. In academia, open access to both publications
and data has been gathering momentum, and similar calls to open up
learning materials have been heard in education. Furthermore this
gathering flood of open data plus content is the creator and driver of
massive technological change. How can we make this data available, how
can we connect it together, how can we use it to collaborate and share
our work? We will explore these issues, and more, at OKCon 2011 in Berlin.

*Topic areas*

[Wiki-research-l] Announcements relating DBpedia and Wiktionary / MediaWiki conversion to RDF

2010-12-14 Thread Sebastian Hellmann
Hello, my name is Sebastian from AKSW, Uni Leipzig.
I'm currently working on extending the DBpedia Framework software to
convert Wiktionary (all languages) to RDF.
If you are interested please join the mailing list here:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dbpedia-wiktionary

Below is an announcement, which might be relevant, as it provides new
ways of finding content and creating structure in Wikipedia.
There is a mockup http://aksw.org/Projects/NKE#Mockups on how it could
be integrated into Wikipedia and also a Web demo: http://hanne.aksw.org

Regards,
Sebastian

*Details Below*
Dear Colleagues,
over the last year, we have worked on a methodology called Navigational
Knowledge Engineering - in short NKE.

We have amounted a good deal of documents, a web demo (HANNE) , source
code and images, which we publish and link to on this page:
http://aksw.org/Projects/NKE

Summary:
NKE is a light-weight methodology for low-cost knowledge engineering by
a massive user base. Although structured data is becoming widely
available, no other methodology – to the best of our knowledge – is
currently able to scale up and provide light-weight knowledge
engineering for a massive user base. Using NKE, data providers can
publish flat data on the Web without extensively engineering structure
upfront, but rather observe how structure is created on the fly by
interested users, who navigate the knowledge base and at the same time
also benefit from using it. The vision of NKE is to produce ontologies
as a result of users navigating through a system. This way, NKE reduces
the costs for creating expressive knowledge by disguising it as navigation.

We would also like to steer your attention to the Web Demo [2], the
Tutorial slides for the Web demo [3] and two mockups[4], which visualize
how the methodology could be integrated into Wikipedia and Amazon.com .

As we believe that the methodology is quite novel (please tell us in
case you know something similar), we are still discussing all possible
applications and implications. In particular, we are searching for
suggestions, where to integrate and test our methodology next. Please
feel free to contact us.

Regards,
Sebastian Hellmann, Jens Lehmann, Jörg Unbehauen, Claus Stadler and
Markus Strohmaier (TU Graz)
