[Wiki-research-l] [Announcement] A new formal collaboration in Research

2024-03-14 Thread Isaac Johnson
Hi all,

The Research team at the Wikimedia
Foundation has officially started a new Formal

Collaboration

with Marija Sakota (EPFL
) to work collaboratively on generating edit
summaries for Wikipedia edits
.
We prioritized this work as part of work on identifying and helping to
close data gaps

but there are also potential benefits for moderators or supporting
newcomers in understanding under our knowledge integrity program
.

Here are a few pieces of information about this collaboration that we would
like to share with you:

* Marija has already done amazing work
in developing a model for recommending article descriptions and supporting
our Android team in making these recommendations available to editors

.

* We aim to keep the research documentation for this project in the
corresponding
research page on meta

and you can also track the work on Phabricator (T354565
). This work is also done in
collaboration with Robert West , our
long-time Research Fellow.

* I act as the point of contact for this research in the Wikimedia
Foundation. Please feel free to reach out to me (directly, if it cannot be
shared publicly) if you have comments or questions about the project.

Best,
Isaac

[Wiki-research-l] [Announcement] A new formal collaboration in Research

2024-01-30 Thread Eli Asikin-Garmager
Hi all,

The Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation has officially started a new
Formal Collaboration [1] with Dr. Michael Zimmer (Marquette University) to
work collaboratively on Wikimedia Research Best Practices Around Privacy
White Paper [2]. We prioritized responding to this request from the
Arbitration Committee [3] as part of our mission to strengthen Wikimedia
research communities and to support the policy (broadly defined) needs of
the Wikimedia Movement.[4]

Here are a few pieces of information about this collaboration that we would
like to share with you:

* We aim to keep the research documentation for this project in the
corresponding research page on meta.[2] Please note the link on that
project page to the Phabricator task, which contains additional details and
timeline information.

* Research tasks are hard to break down and track in task-tracking
systems. This being said, the page on meta is linked to an Epic level
Phabricator task and all tasks related to this project that can be captured
on Phabricator will be captured there.[5]

* The following formal collaborator (cc-ed) will contribute to this
project: Dr. Michael Zimmer, Marquette University.[6] We are thankful to
them for agreeing to spend their time and expertise on this project, and to
those of you who have already worked with us as we were shaping the
proposal for this project and are planning to continue your contributions
to this program.

* I act as the point of contact for this research in the Wikimedia
Foundation. Please feel free to reach out to me (directly, if it
cannot be shared publicly) if you have comments or questions about the
project.

Best,
Eli

Yes, I agree with the general idea. In fact, using Wikidata as a pivot to
understand inconsistencies across different Wikipedias is the next step

2020-05-24 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
I have found consistently that many of the links in Wikipedia are to false
friends. This happens particularly in lists. Given that many lists are
imported into Wikidata as they are, typically both projects share the same
errors. For the list for awardees of the Polk award, I have scrutinised the
data, blogged and tweeted about this phenomenon. This is very much in scope
of this research project.

What I have regularly proposed is to link blue and red links to Wikidata
items. This will have a similar impact as the effect of linking interwiki
links in Wikidata in stead of native links in the Wikipedias. Additionally
this enables another type of research; inconsistencies between Wikipedias.
Thanks,
  GerardM
