This also causes the output of the backlinks list in the API to include
incorrect links.

For example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=backlinks&blredirect&bllimit=100&blnamespace=0&blfilterredir=redirects&bltitle=Plural
shows that there are many articles that redirect to "Plural" when in fact they
redirect to other articles.
For example 'Companies' is the plural of 'Company' so the article 'Companies'
naturally redirects to 'Company', but is also listed as a redirect to 'Plural'.

@P. Birken: Bug 16636 was just filed following
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16489#c5 (comment 5), per
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16489#c7 (comment 7). If I
hadn't separated it, someone else would have done it. Frankly, I am (and was)
not the biggest fan of bug 16489 anyway, see
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16489#c9. But I see it as some
kind of necessary and acceptable compromise.

Some people use RecentChanges, to *watch all* pages, others use their
customised watchlist. For the same purpose, the first is unfiltered, the second
is filtered (only containing *some* pages). There is no other difference
between those pages, WatchLists are individual RecentChanges. Actually, *every*
edit should be checked, but when there is bug 16489 there also should be bug
16636. Consistency is an important quality, yet missing in MediaWiki often
enough. And WLs are as bloated and crowded as RCs, that's a general problem.

Once again (referring to your e-mail), FlaggedRevs doesn't belong to Germans,
it is not at all owned by or eligible for de.WP in any way. A good software
fits the needs of all its users around the world, and it can be customised.
Hiding/disabling features by default (or making them inconsistent) is never a
good idea, just because normal/un-privileged users will not know of that
features and will not directly be able to make use of those features. Hiding
something you are aware of - and somehow don't like - is just as easy!
Especially on Wikimedia (even important) features often are only made available
for a wiki if a privileged user on that wiki is aware of a certain
feature/extension, aware of bugzilla and able+willing to file a request and to
wait for it to be enabled. Luckily, FlaggedRevs currently has an very ambitious
developer, with a 'meta-like' overview and a clear concept.

[Bug 16821] New: Make centralnotice collapse preference global/cross-site

OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: CentralNotice
AssignedTo: br...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: br...@wikimedia.org

Currently the collapse/expand state for the centralnotice banner is stored in a
domain-specific browser cookie.

For those not using the secure.wikimedia.org interface (which puts all wikis on
a single domain), this means they have to click the collapse thingy for every
wiki they visit.

Further, if you visit the wikis from multiple computers or multiple browsers,
the collapse state doesn't come with you. :(

For people who are logged in with a global account, it ought to be possible to
stick the collapse/expand state into some kind of global preference that goes
with the account; thus once logged in you'd stick with the option anywhere.
This however would be dependent on having an infrastructure for maintaining
such preferences, *and* some way to save it. :P

(bug 14950?)

I'm pretty sure we won't get to this in the next couple weeks, but this would
be good to target to have done before the 2009-2010 fundraiser.

At a minimum, setting the cookie at one level up might be nice (eg
*.wikipedia.org instead of just en.wikipedia.org).

[Bug 16822] New: Provide SSL/HTTPS interface to upload.wikimedia. org and use it for SSL-served pages

2008-12-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16822

Summary: Provide SSL/HTTPS interface to upload.wikimedia.org and
use it for SSL-served pages
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
   URL: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Main_Page
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: br...@wikimedia.org

Currently we pull images (and CentralNotice JS) from
http://upload.wikimedia.org even for pages accessed over SSL on
https://secure.wikimedia.org/

This has a few problems:

1) An attacker on an open network or MITM can see which images you're loading.
Creepy!

2) A MITM attacker could replace your images with something malicious/nasty
(moderately annoying)

3) A MITM attacker could replace JS files with something malicious (JavaScript
injection -> could take over your session)

We didn't pay too much attention to the image issues originally since existing
browsers don't seem to care much about images being loaded from an insecure
URL; but Firefox 3.1b2 now complains about this and considers your page to be
"mixed" secure/insecure, throwing up a dialog box (at least the first time) and
giving you a broken lock icon which indicates an insecure page view, which is
worrying.

Ideally we could provide an HTTPS proxy on https://upload.wikimedia.org for
maximum convenience; alternately a proxy via
https://secure.wikimedia.org/upload or such might be easier to set up in the
short term.

The CentralNotice JS issue, which affects existing browsers and is more
worrying, could be dealt with by providing an alternate location to access the
files or a temporary proxy, or via direct hits to Special:NoticeText.

This looks like your URL rewriting rules are bad and are not passing on the
query string. If doing this with Apache's mod_rewrite, you should add the [QSA]
option to your rule definition.

(Note the totally unrelated 3-letter issue is dealt with in the upcoming 1.14

and fix it for any version of MediaWiki.)

[Bug 16823] New: Sidebar search form should not use Special: Search view URL as target

2008-12-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16823

Summary: Sidebar search form should not use Special:Search view
URL as target
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
   URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=fooey
&go=Go
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Keywords: bugmonday, easy
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Search
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: br...@wikimedia.org
Blocks: 16358

The mini search form in the sitebar uses a view URL for Special:Search as the
form submission target/action.

This tends to produce a final URL like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=fooey&go=Go

While pretty, it has the distinct disadvantage that it frequently collides with
"pretty URL" configurations whose rewrite rules don't pass on the original
query string...

So for instance the incoming URL fragment:

/wiki/Special:Search?search=fooey&go=Go

might get rewritten into:

/index.php?title=Special:Search

and our actual search parameters are gone. We then get bug reports, mails, or
IRC visitors asking why search doesn't work on their wiki.

The sidebar form should instead use the script target, the way Special:Search's
form does:

this produces a URL which will work on any configuration, and will reduce the
incidence of surprises.

AFAIK we don't explicitly create any other URLs where we append parameters to a
view URL in this way, and we should be avoiding it here too.

De-assigning, as no activity in 3 years. Still a good idea though! :)

K-form normalization would be easy to apply (since UtfNormal class already
implements it); other folding may require more coding.

en.wikipedia.org seems to be fine currently.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbitrary_page_name

includes a search link via Special:Search:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search/Arbitrary_page_name

which works just fine, as the underscores in the link parameter are converted

Brion,

The search page was passing the query string to index.php, and that was
working, so I manually changed the search box to pass the query to index.php,
and now that works ...

How would apache not be passing on the querystring ? Can you give me an example
?

Thanks a lot for the help.

Customized en.wikipedia.org message:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=Dollar+Index&sourceid=Mozilla-search

vs MediaWiki default message (forced to en_GB):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=Dollar+Index&sourceid=Mozilla-search&uselang=en-gb

The default message adds just two lines from the 'go' search mode:

  No page title matches
There is no page titled "Dollar Index". You can create this page.

then followed by *actual page text search results*.

The English Wikipedia customized message is followed by a giant pagefull of
links to things you could do. On my laptop screen (1280x800) I can only see 4
pixels' worth of the first actual result at the bottom of the screen, which is
the exact target a searcher would be looking for.

The giant list of links should, if needed *at all*, probably only be shown if
you got no search results.

This index *might* be useful sometimes for bulk statistics, but the core case
(a sensible way of searching based on mime type) would probably be better
served by making some image metadata (including mime type) available to the
fulltext search index.

If appropriately integrated, you could then do a search for soemthing like:

image:moon landing mime:application/ogg

and get a sensible result of files with a text match for "moon landing" and a
MIME type matching application/ogg.

Might be a couple more of these entries floating around, should be
consolidated.

Basic summary:
* Sometimes a page gets stuck in the proxy caches that's gzipped but not marked
as gzipped. Browsers pulling the cached page get confused and offer to download
the file instead of viewing it.
* Purging the page (edit or action=purge) eliminates the broken item.

We see reports from IE users usually, though this isn't necessarily a universal
and may just be due to greater usage.

We're using Special:UserRights for everything now, but I'm not sure that's the

So far as I know, locking was always intended to be temporary until blocking of
global accounts could be implemented in a manner similar to global blocking of
IPs. What are the chances that Andrew's GlobalBlocking extension can be
modified to do users as well?

We'd actually want to do the opposite:

* bug 16823 -- on many third-party installations, putting parameters on the
Special:Search view URL breaks entirely
* general robots.txt goodness -- spiders are more likely to hit
/wiki/Special:Search whatever whereas the index.php URLs will be blocked on
more installations (including ours)

Stats should simply be updated to handle the other URLs and catch search terms
specifically -- bug 13488.

I don't see why anything needs to happen here. Bot edits are logged as normal -
viewable in the history, user contributions, hidden like all other bots (and
you can view just bot edits:

No special oversight is needed here. Suggest WONTFIX.

Noting whether their rights apply to the wiki would be nice then:

# Aibot ‎(exists locally, global bot, rights apply here)

...or something like that. Most users probably don't know to check (or if they
do, how to actually do it) if a certain wiki is in a certain wiki set. We
shouldn't be obnoxious about this kind of thing.(In reply to comment #2)
> (In reply to comment #1)

Yes - global groups may not (usually don't) share the same rights as their
local "counterpart". Global bots have an arbitrary, changeable, set of rights
which are not necessarily the same as local bots.

For example, rollbackers and global rollbackers *don't* have the same rights!

I'm guessing that's not sorted in a sensible fashion. I.e., it's presumably
sorted by the IP address, not by date. If it's sorted by date, it's probably
querying a heck of a lot of rows. Just because something performs well enough
for a JS hack to not be so horrible that the sysadmins track it down and delete
it because it's causing things to explode, doesn't mean it performs well enough
to be put in the core software.

If that would be acceptable, then sure, that could be added to the human
interface. Something similar is already available in the API.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=usercontribs&uclimit=50&ucuserprefix=217.123

That doesn't allow CIDR ranges, but you could filter it reasonably cheaply in
most cases (I assume that Splarka's tool does that), so it would be acceptable
to add.
