[Bug 16899] New: DISPLAYTITLE should allow Arabic and Persian harakats

2009-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16899

Summary: DISPLAYTITLE should allow Arabic and Persian harakats
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Keywords: parser
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Page rendering
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: huji.h...@gmail.com

In Arabic and Persian languages, some vowels are not regularly written, unless
there is a need to clarify the pronunciation of a word. An example of such a
need is when the title of a page is a loanword. Some wikis (e.g. Persian
Wikipedia) prefer to keep those vowels out of the page title (to increase the
chances of page being located through web searches) but still would like the
page title to have the harakats. A typical solution will be to allow this to be
used with DISPLAYTITLE.

The mostly used harakats (which are common in the two languages) are: ِ ُ َ

As long as mo.wikipedia.org exists, this code is not going to be removed. If
you are thinking of requesting that wiki to be closed, you should make such a
request on meta.wikimedia.org. Until then, this request is INVALID here.

[Bug 16900] New: Cursor is placed incorrectly after inserting Hebrew diacritics

2009-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16900

Summary: Cursor is placed incorrectly after inserting Hebrew
diacritics
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: PC
   URL: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension_talk:CharInsert
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: CharInsert
AssignedTo: br...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: amir.ahar...@gmail.com

The vowel point is added correctly, but after it is added the cursor moves back
to where it was. For example, let's take the word שבּת. Let's mark it like
this:
* ש = S
* ב = B
* ת = T

The dot inside ב is called a dagesh; i'll mark it as a period - .

The cursor = |

I type SBT and the cursor is now after the T: SBT| שבת

Now i move back one letter and the cursor is after the B: SB|T

Now i click the letter that is supposed to add the dagesh (it's the first one
on the right.) The dagesh is added: SB|.T שבּ‏ת

Notice, however, that the cursor is still between the B and the dagesh, even
though it is supposed to be after the dagesh. How do i know that it is before
the dagesh? If i press the Del key, the the dagesh disappears - שבת. If i
press the backspace, then the B disappears and the dagesh moves to the S -
שּ‏ת. This is definitely wrong.

Would be good if sitematrix not only indicated whether a wiki is readonly, but
also whether the API is enabled at all there. Currently, trying an API call on
a wiki where the API is disabled completely just returns a text MediaWiki API
is not enabled for this site. Add the following line to your
LocalSettings.phplt;pregt;%lt;bgt;$wgEnableAPI=true;lt;/bgt;lt;/pregt;
which is rather unhelpful for automated processing. For instance, when using
dynamically generated script-elements with a callback: what we get back isn't
even Javascript. Hence we need a way to ensure that we don't even try API calls
on such wikis. Sitematrix flagging wikis with disabled APIs would be one way.
Or is there some other way to do this already?

[Bug 5491] Colour-coding of items in page histories

The color solution and the border solution do not work as they should. A
solution with dedicated icons runs into the problem that skin developers would
have to do new icons for this. Could any skin developer please comment on
 this?
If not, I guess it would be better to close this bug.

There is a feature created by some wikipedians that I've added to my Monobook
here :
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Liquid_2003/monobook.css
A few days ago, there was icons too, from the Crystal Clear pack.

Is this due to actual bandwidth issues, or the idea that humans might actually
be reading the feed directly? If it's the latter, can we *please* either
abandon that idea or set up a separate feed for automated processes because
they are by far the majority consumers of this information. Especially on
en.wikipedia, where I doubt anyone has used the feed for patrolling in its raw

See this testcase:

[[Test!!]]

{| border=1
|-
! [[Test!!]]
|-
! [[Testnowiki!!/nowiki]]
|-
! [[Test#33;#33;]]
|}

The exclamation marks inside an internal link, when it's placed inside a th
(table header) cell, are parsed first as part of the table, instead of as part
of the link.

Since exclamation marks are allowed as page titles, the correct behavior should
be parse first the link and then the table structure. (like is done when a pipe
character is inserted inside a link or template that is inside a table)

So the first row in the example now renders as two cells, breaking the link.
The second row renders as one cell but also breaks the link (I don't know if
that's correct or not; I simply tried a workaround to that but failed). The
third row renders correctly, but it's tedious to do that, specially for people
that doesn't know that every character could be translated as a numerical
character reference. But, well, at least there's a way to do that!

True, although sighting seems to generate more (manual) activity than
patrolling, so not listing the automated ones separately wouldn't help quite as
much. In particular, if you were trying to read the feed directly, then
assuming the wiki's users are staying on top of their backlog there would be
one sight for every edit, which would certainly get in the way of trying to
read the edits.

Hence the aforementioned need to either make the feeds' intended purpose a
machine-readable source or provide alternative feeds. :/

However as far as can I see on random RTL wikis, they don't even use those
 link
icons for external, mailto:, https:, irc: etc. links, which are based on the
same principle, so I guess it's known issue. Thus I'd suggest to have the RTL
wikis without those icons as well...

See bug 16502.

Currently CodeReview just spits out the 'svn diff' output, which is great for
text files, but pretty sucky for binaries -- it just says the files differ.

It would be spiffy if for recognized image files, we showed side-by-side views
of the previous and updated files. They could be img'd in by reference easily
enough...

2009-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon

OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal

ReportedBy: lupo.bugzi...@gmail.com

Why is this page
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Uploaduselang=fifromflickruploadformstyle=plain
being served with the user interface set to English instead of Suomi (Finnish)?
(It says e.g. my preferences at the top, even if I set my user interface
language to cs - Czech in my preferences!) It should return the page with the
Suomi interface, i.e. it should say asetukset instead of my preferences.

The page
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Uploaduselang=fiuploadformstyle=plain
is served properly in Suomi, and the page
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Uploaduselang=frfromflickruploadformstyle=plain
is properly served in French.

There seems to be some configuration difference for the Commons between
fr/French and fi/Suomi.

Please correct that such that the Common's uselang-hack works for all language
prefixes.

Currently, cur and last texts are hardcoded in the 'histlegend' page
history legend text. This means that any customization to one or the other
leads to an out-of-sync message -- for instance when r45311 goes live, English
Wikipedia's customized legend will be incorrect (saying last instead of the
new text, prev).

The Minor edit letter is also used here... Probably some other legends need to
be similarly updated.

[Bug 16839] cleanupTitles and namespaceDupes shouldn't consider 'Special' or 'Media' valid title targets

--- Comment #2 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org 2009-01-06 23:13:40 UTC

Hmm... Testing with cleanupTitles:

shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:05:59: page 1267 (Media:Joemomma) doesn't match self.
shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:05:59: DRY RUN: would rename 1267 (0,'Media:Joemomma')
to (0,'Joemomma')

shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:06:47: page 1267 (Special:Joemomma) doesn't match self.
shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:06:47: DRY RUN: would rename 1267
(0,'Special:Joemomma') to (0,'Joemomma')

This is just dropping the namespace, which would probably be sub-ideal if the
text was intended to be part of the original title.

Compare with current handling of a conflict with an interwiki prefix:

shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:07:26: page 1267 (Wikipedia:Joemomma) doesn't match
self.
shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:07:26: DRY RUN: would rename 1267
(0,'Wikipedia:Joemomma') to (0,'Broken/wikipedia:Joemomma')

Note that namespaceDupes has different handling of that case, also including
the original text:

Checking interwiki prefix: Wikipedia
... 1 conflicts detected:
... 1267 (0,Wikipedia:Joemomma) - (0,Wikipedia-Joemomma)
[[Wikipedia-Joemomma]]

Probably we should make sure that both cleanup scripts perform the same cleanup
here...

namespacceDupes is at least now refusing to normalize the title record into -2
or -1 namespaces, so that's a good thing. :) Probably should let it handle them
in some way, though, as is done for the interwiki case.

It could be helpful for online collaboration if we could send IRC notifications

Notifications could be pretty easily sent to irc.wikimedia.org using the
existing RC/UDP structure I think, but we'd need to poke something else in to
get one of those bots talking on freenode. (wikibugs is done on a totally
different infrastructure, driven by a mailing list, and is godawful. ;)

Well, if it always recurses, then *links* to redirects will resolve to the
target page, so if page A redirected to page B, putting [[A]] on the page would
show [[B]] to the user after the Parser runs its course. I added the second
parameter to stop that so it only recurses when resolving page names.

[Bug 16913] New: FlaggedRevs' talk page patrolling behaves irregular

2009-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16913

Summary: FlaggedRevs' talk page patrolling behaves irregular
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
   URL: http://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Logbuech/patrol
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: FlaggedRevs
AssignedTo: jschulz_4...@msn.com
ReportedBy: wiki.melancho...@web.de

FlaggedRevs' talk page patrolling behaves irregular.
Either not all patrollings are logged at
[[als:Special:Log/patrol]]/[[de:wikt:Special:Log/patrol]] or not all (IP-)edits
are marked with an red exclamation mark (rcid)!

Example:
http://als.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Jesus_with_erectionaction=history
The last edit there was made by an newbie IP. The page isn't shown with any
mark (rcid) in RecentChanges/watchlists. But nobody seems to have patrolled
that talk page, see http://als.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Logbuech/patrol

I think the log is failing for some users and?or sporadically; see bug 16375#c4
Also this edit:
http://als.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Kleines_Wiesentaldiff=177991
did not produce a patrol log entry.

pages that no user is watching. Vandalism isn't just something that happens in
content namespaces...

Note this will disable e-mail notifications of bots edits for all pages, not
just user talk pages. I'm uncertain whether this should be the case; if the
watcher has the 'enotifminoredits' preference will he expect to get notified
anyway? Or should we consider this equivalent to bot edits in RC, being hidden?

(Of course, you can choose to show bot edits in RC... but here you wouldn't be
able to ask for bot edit notifications without add'l changes.)

Probably not doing the notifications is the expected thing in most cases, but
figured I'd add a note in case we decide otherwise. :D

The logic is wrong and will fail to raise the limit to the new limit if the
server's default is between 20 and 50. Further, the whole logic is crappy; we
should be doing the check at runtime rather than at install time, since the
server's settings may change after we install.

[Bug 16916] New: Unnecessary title disambiguation by cleanupImages.php

2009-01-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16916

Summary: Unnecessary title disambiguation by cleanupImages.php
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.14-svn
  Platform: All
   URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Picswiss_BE-94-
01_Kirche_von_Würzbrunnen_(Röthenbach)_-_Gotthelf-
Kirche%26quo_1.jpg
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Maintenance scripts
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: nos...@vyznev.net

Since r43795, cleanupImages.php has moved the description pages of any misnamed
files along with the files themselves. While implementing this, a check was
added to ensure that the script won't try to move files to titles which already
have a description page, even if said page is not accompanied by an actual
file.

On the most recent cleanupImages run on Commons, this resulted in the misnamed,
descriptionless file Picswiss BE-94-01 Kirche von Würzbrunnen (Röthenbach) -
quot;Gotthelf-Kirchequo.jpg being moved to the disambiguated title Picswiss
BE-94-01 Kirche von Würzbrunnen (Röthenbach) - Gotthelf-Kirchequo 1.jpg
(note the 1). The reason the script chose to disambiguate the title was
that there already was an existing page at Picswiss BE-94-01 Kirche von
Würzbrunnen (Röthenbach) - Gotthelf-Kirchequo.jpg -- in fact, it was the
description page belonging to the original file!

The old, pre-r43795 code would've simply reunited the file with its description
page, since it didn't pay any attention to the page table at all. Thus, this
is arguably a regression. It seems reasonable enough to assume that, if a
description page without a file already exists at the corrected title for a
file without a description page, they probably belong together. Certainly this
would seem extremely unlikely to occur by coincidence.

A single case would not merit adding an exception to the code, if it was
reasonably likely to be an isolated one. However, this was one case out of the
total of nine files moved in that run -- and all the other eight would've been
affected by the exact same problem if their description pages hadn't been
previously deleted. One actual case and eight narrowly averted ones seems
enough to justify a few extra lines of code, particularly since we have no idea
how frequent they might be elsewhere. If it happened once, it will probably
some day happen again somewhere.

I already committed one fix to this problem as r45388, but it was reverted by
brion in r45478. I've written an alternative, possibly cleaner implementation,
which I'll attach to this bug as a patch. I'm filing this bug both for
discussion of this issue, and so that I'll have a bug number to refer to in
comments instead of having to repeat the whole incident report just to explain
what these few lines of code are there for.

r45374 doesn't look like it'll have any affect whatsoever -- !is_null() and
isset() will be returning the same result, so there'll be no change in
behavior. If it was wrong before, it's still wrong.

[Bug 14365] Entries in the image table with invalid titles

We always serve with an XHTML doctype, so that's not an issue. What browsers
won't recognize it? Are we talking like NN4 here, or like IE6?

I've tried searching for a browser compatibility table for apos;, but haven't
found any so far. Anyway, XHTML has existed for almost a decade now, so I
suspect only very old browsers would be completely unaware of it. The IE
behavior worries me more: one page I found, http://seewhatever.de/blog/?p=114 ,
says even IE 7 won't recognize apos; in HTML mode, and seems to suggest that
it's the MIME type that makes the difference.

Anyway, why do we output named character entities at all? We already have a
table of the Unicode code points corresponding to all of them, so it would be
trivial to make normalizeEntity() output numeric entities only.
