[Bug 16899] New: DISPLAYTITLE should allow Arabic and Persian harakats
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16899 Summary: DISPLAYTITLE should allow Arabic and Persian harakats Product: MediaWiki Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Keywords: parser Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: Page rendering AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: huji.h...@gmail.com In Arabic and Persian languages, some vowels are not regularly written, unless there is a need to clarify the pronunciation of a word. An example of such a need is when the title of a page is a loanword. Some wikis (e.g. Persian Wikipedia) prefer to keep those vowels out of the page title (to increase the chances of page being located through web searches) but still would like the page title to have the harakats. A typical solution will be to allow this to be used with DISPLAYTITLE. The mostly used harakats (which are common in the two languages) are: ِ ُ َ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. For example, let's take the word שבּת. Let's mark it like this: * ש = S * ב = B * ת = T The dot inside ב is called a dagesh; i'll mark it as a period - . The cursor = | I type SBT and the cursor is now after the T: SBT| שבת Now i move back one letter and the cursor is after the B: SB|T Now i click the letter that is supposed to add the dagesh (it's the first one on the right.) The dagesh is added: SB|.T שבּת Notice, however, that the cursor is still between the B and the dagesh, even though it is supposed to be after the dagesh. How do i know that it is before the dagesh? If i press the Del key, the the dagesh disappears - שבת. If i press the backspace, then the B disappears and the dagesh moves to the S - שּת. This is definitely wrong. For instance, when using dynamically generated script-elements with a callback: what we get back isn't even Javascript. Hence we need a way to ensure that we don't even try API calls on such wikis. [[Test#33;#33;]] |} The exclamation marks inside an internal link, when it's placed inside a th (table header) cell, are parsed first as part of the table, instead of as part of the link. Since exclamation marks are allowed as page titles, the correct behavior should be parse first the link and then the table structure. (like is done when a pipe character is inserted inside a link or template that is inside a table) So the first row in the example now renders as two cells, breaking the link. The second row renders as one cell but also breaks the link (I don't know if that's correct or not; I simply tried a workaround to that but failed). The third row renders correctly, but it's tedious to do that, specially for people that doesn't know that every character could be translated as a numerical character reference. True, although sighting seems to generate more (manual) activity than patrolling, so not listing the automated ones separately wouldn't help quite as much. In particular, if you were trying to read the feed directly, then assuming the wiki's users are staying on top of their backlog there would be one sight for every edit, which would certainly get in the way of trying to read the edits. Hence the aforementioned need to either make the feeds' intended purpose a machine-readable source or provide alternative feeds. :/ -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

Compare with current handling of a conflict with an interwiki prefix: shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:07:26: page 1267 (Wikipedia:Joemomma) doesn't match self. shortwiki 2009-01-06 23:07:26: DRY RUN: would rename 1267 (0,'Wikipedia:Joemomma') to (0,'Broken/wikipedia:Joemomma') Note that namespaceDupes has different handling of that case, also including the original text: Checking interwiki prefix: Wikipedia ... 1 conflicts detected: ... 1267 (0,Wikipedia:Joemomma) - (0,Wikipedia-Joemomma) [[Wikipedia-Joemomma]] Probably we should make sure that both cleanup scripts perform the same cleanup here... namespacceDupes is at least now refusing to normalize the title record into -2 or -1 namespaces, so that's a good thing. :) Probably should let it handle them in some way, though, as is done for the interwiki case. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 16916] New: Unnecessary title disambiguation by cleanupImages.php
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16916 Summary: Unnecessary title disambiguation by cleanupImages.php Product: MediaWiki Version: 1.14-svn Platform: All URL: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Picswiss_BE-94- 01_Kirche_von_Würzbrunnen_(Röthenbach)_-_Gotthelf- Kirche%26quo_1.jpg OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: minor Priority: Normal Component: Maintenance scripts AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: nos...@vyznev.net Since r43795, cleanupImages.php has moved the description pages of any misnamed files along with the files themselves. While implementing this, a check was added to ensure that the script won't try to move files to titles which already have a description page, even if said page is not accompanied by an actual file. On the most recent cleanupImages run on Commons, this resulted in the misnamed, descriptionless file Picswiss BE-94-01 Kirche von Würzbrunnen (Röthenbach) - quot;Gotthelf-Kirchequo.jpg being moved to the disambiguated title Picswiss BE-94-01 Kirche von Würzbrunnen (Röthenbach) - Gotthelf-Kirchequo 1.jpg (note the 1). The reason the script chose to disambiguate the title was that there already was an existing page at Picswiss BE-94-01 Kirche von Würzbrunnen (Röthenbach) - Gotthelf-Kirchequo.jpg -- in fact, it was the description page belonging to the original file! The old, pre-r43795 code would've simply reunited the file with its description page, since it didn't pay any attention to the page table at all. Thus, this is arguably a regression. It seems reasonable enough to assume that, if a description page without a file already exists at the corrected title for a file without a description page, they probably belong together. Certainly this would seem extremely unlikely to occur by coincidence. A single case would not merit adding an exception to the code, if it was reasonably likely to be an isolated one. However, this was one case out of the total of nine files moved in that run -- and all the other eight would've been affected by the exact same problem if their description pages hadn't been previously deleted. One actual case and eight narrowly averted ones seems enough to justify a few extra lines of code, particularly since we have no idea how frequent they might be elsewhere. If it happened once, it will probably some day happen again somewhere. I already committed one fix to this problem as r45388, but it was reverted by brion in r45478. I've written an alternative, possibly cleaner implementation, which I'll attach to this bug as a patch. I'm filing this bug both for discussion of this issue, and so that I'll have a bug number to refer to in comments instead of having to repeat the whole incident report just to explain what these few lines of code are there for. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 14365] Entries in the image table with invalid titles
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14365 --- Comment #11 from Ilmari Karonen nos...@vyznev.net 2009-01-07 06:03:13 UTC --- I've tried searching for a browser compatibility table for apos;, but haven't found any so far. Anyway, XHTML has existed for almost a decade now, so I suspect only very old browsers would be completely unaware of it. The IE behavior worries me more: one page I found, http://seewhatever.de/blog/?p=114 , says even IE 7 won't recognize apos; in HTML mode, and seems to suggest that it's the MIME type that makes the difference. Anyway, why do we output named character entities at all? We already have a table of the Unicode code points corresponding to all of them, so it would be trivial to make normalizeEntity() output numeric entities only. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
