[Bug 17611] New: lighttpd + sqlite installation failure

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17611

   Summary: lighttpd + sqlite installation failure
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.13.4
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Keywords: easy
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Installation
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: vavarac...@gmail.com
CC: vavarac...@gmail.com

Created an attachment (id=5845)
 --> (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=5845)
Fix applied to line 25

sqlite-3.3.6-2
php-5.1.6-20.el5_2.1
lighttpd-1.4.20-1.el5.rf
mediawiki-1.13.4

When attempting to install mediawiki using sqlite as the backend, I get the
following errors.

Warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: Permission denied in
/repos/mediawiki/includes/db/DatabaseSqlite.php on line 26
# Attempting to connect to database "wikidb" as "wikiuser"...
Warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: Permission denied in
/repos/mediawiki/includes/db/DatabaseSqlite.php on line 26

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wfPrintError() in
/repos/mediawiki/includes/Exception.php on line 283

Upon closer inspection, I noticed that line 25 contains the following:
if ("$wgSQLiteDataDir" == '') $wgSQLiteDataDir =
dirname($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']).'/data';

dirname function call does not make sense here because $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'
is always a directory. In my case it is "_ENV["DOCUMENT_ROOT"] /repos" (from
phpinfo() ).

dirname function returns / and attempts to create the directory at //data.

Simple fix:
if ("$wgSQLiteDataDir" == '') $wgSQLiteDataDir =
$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/data';

Cheers,
Vijay

The existance of nds, nds-DE, nds-NL localizations in no way hinders or

languages or language groups, that are under the nds umbrella and having

--- Comment #3 from Purodha Blissenbach
2009-02-22 02:08:45 UTC ---
nds is a common code for a set of some 4000 diverse languages, as some scholar
see it. About a dozen+ of those also have ISO codes on their own, several of
which are again group codes (e.g. wep) while other are not (e.g. gro). Included
are both living and extinct varieties. For various reasons none of the more
distinctive codes are suited to identify any of our wiki projects, although
they could, in theory, be used to be tagged onto pages or sequences of text
here and there, which happen to be written in one of those specific varieties.
Unfortunately, we have no good software support (yet) for such tagging.

While all varieties of nds are astonishingly well mutually understandable when
spoken (considering their wide geographic spread),
when written, they follow either of two base orthographies, one Dutch-like, and
another German-like, which makes written texts much harder to mutually
compreend than spoken language. Hence the "schism" of nds-DE, and nds-NL in our
wikis. Since our localizations are 100% written, it is justified, to
distinguish orthographies. (Using ISO 3166 country codes to do so is not
really. Following ISO 639 rules verbatim, we needed to apply for orthography
subtags. Using country codes is, however, available in ISO 639 for geographic
tagging, which in our case gives a 100% coincidence with the orhographic
diversion. Although it's not its original purpose, it turns out usable for us)

Screenshot of en.m.wikipedia on an iPhone, portrait mode

As you can see in the attachment screenshot I made, the front page renders
badly on the iPhone.

Here’s what I think should be done, at least for the iPhone:

*The logo should be about 300px wide, center-aligned, and at the very top of
the page (and on every page, please).
*Under the logo, the search bar should reside.
*The Go button should be removed: There is a button for that integrated in the
iPhone keyboard (similar to pressing enter on a computer). I honestly think the
Go button will never be used by iPhone users, as tapping the keyboard away in
order to tap that button is extremely inconvenient.
*As the Go button is gone, the Random article button can take its place, but is
it really necessary? I mean, when using the internet on my iPhone when I’m
outside, I have a purpose. I’m not just playing around like I normally would
on a computer.
*There should be a link to the normal Wikipedia page in the footer of every
page.

Hmm, that’s all I think. Oh, and I hope the mobile version will be available
in other languages (like all 100k+ WP languages or something) as well.

ISO's codes are arbitrary. Plain arbitrary. The distinction nds-nl/nds-de fits
the needs of the community. Dividing along the ISO codes would do a heavy
disservice to the community.

I guess, the actual native community knows better about their needs than the
guys at ISO who have to handle thousands of languages many of which they have
absolutely no expertise on.

IMO this is a problem created by a proposed solution. If the solution for named

'the list' for translatewiki.net for another reason, too. We would like users
to be able to choose their own fallback languages, because they know best which
languages their wiki UI should fall back to.

bug 17592 lends itself towads the idea that the fallback language for both
nds-NL  and  nds-DE  localizations could
or should become nds rather than current nl and de.

Discussion also revealed that indeed:

   nds-NL → nds → nl → (en)
and
   nds-DE → nds → de → (en)

was the best possible choice. This is backed by the recent two
decades of assement in scientific literature of the language
groups involved, which is also reflected at least in the
corresponding articles in the German Wikipedia (did not
check any other ones)

(By the way, we have, or shall likely soon encounter, similar
complexities with other language groups)

Such fallback paths are currently impossible, since we have only
one single fallback language per language. Yet, the concept can
pretty easily be expanded by allowing fallback languages to be
given as an array of language codes, too, which we should do.
Array members are to be checked in the given order, before any
of their own fallback languages are, and this may recurse.
No language is to be checked a second time, obviously, and we
can still keep the limit of at most 5 languages (imho), thus not
sacrificing any processing time.

Strange solution. Ethnologue states[1]: "Low Saxon varieties listed as separate
entries in the Netherlands, where they have official status" 'nds' is the Low
Saxon spoken in Germany. Low Saxon is also a macro language (of which Low Saxon
is a language), with languages that are spoken in the Netherlands. It appears
to me like a complex solution is chosen here, where the regular ISO 639-3
should suffice[2].

* nds = Low Saxon
* nds-nl = I have no idea. Some creole of all nds macro languages spoken in NL?
If it is one of the Low Saxon language spoken in NL, the code should probably
be emptied, and completely fall back to a proper ISO 639-3 language.
* xxx = whichever Low Saxon language has sufficient localisation to be in
MediaWiki proper

Reopening as this is most certainly not invalid. It is the one major bug that
MUST be fixed before the PasswordReset extension can be stable enough to be
used. While every other potential abuse can be checked with logging, flying
pigs can circumvent this check by simply possessing other users, which does not
get logged.

Perhaps we need a way to intercept brain wave patters to determine if the user
is acting of his/her own free will and block changes where he/she is not.

[Bug 17014] Blocked users can use Special:UserRights

--- Comment #4 from MZMcBride   2009-02-21 22:54:02 UTC

If a user is blocked, presumably someone didn't want them making any actions on
the wiki. A user could, for example, assign themselves +editor and then remove
it from themselves with spam in the edit summaries. Or an insecure bureaucrat
account that has been blocked but not yet had its rights removed could remove

If an account is blocked, it should be _blocked_. It should only be able to
perform a very limited set of actions (really only being able to unblock
itself) and that's it.

[Bug 17605] New: CustomToolbar assumes pretty URLs

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17605

   Summary: CustomToolbar assumes pretty URLs
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Uniwiki
AssignedTo: minuteelect...@googlemail.com
ReportedBy: minuteelect...@googlemail.com
CC: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

The attachment and image upload URLs are built by concatenating wgServer,
wgScript, "/", the special page name, and then any parameters. This will not
work on wikis that do not use pretty URLs as they would use "?title=" rather
than "/" - a less naive method should be used for generating these links.

[Bug 17604] New: Delete Extension:Passwordstr

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17604

   Summary: Delete Extension:Passwordstr

AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
CC: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net

The Extension:Passwordstr purposely weakens user password
strengths by excluding many possible passwords from the
choices, users can make. By its regexp rules, many of which
can easily be determined automatically, brute force password
cracking automats can spare some tests and thus find passwords
faster.

We should recommend not using this kind of pseudo-wannabe-security.
Better delete the extension altogether.

Changing summary again.
globaluser table doesn't have a gu_user_newpass_time field, but
gu_password_reset_expiration can be used for that same purpose.

How painful would be removing gu_password_reset_expiration and adding
gu_user_newpass_time?
Column changes are always an annoyance but using different semantics to achieve
the same suck.

[Bug 17602] New: Monobook action tabs are off one pixel in certain browsers

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon

   Summary: Monobook action tabs are off one pixel in certain

   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: NEW
  Severity: trivial
  Priority: Normal
 Component: User interface
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: gti...@gmail.com

In the Monobook skin, under IE and Opera, the borders of the tabs (edit, move
etc. - with the exception of the currently active tab) on top of the article
don't quite attach to the block below - there is a small gap (one pixel with
usual em sizes). Hard to notice, but it is rather ugly once you do.

Under Opera, #p-cactions { margin-top: 1px; } seems to fix it, and under IE 6,
#p-cactions a { padding-bottom: 1px; } works.

(Tested under IE6, Opera 9.63, Opera 10 beta on Win XP. The problem also
appears on IE7, but the fix was not tested there.)

  Priority: Normal
 Component: Uniwiki

In various places within the Uniwiki Custom Toolbar extension, user-supplied
text (either from within pages, messages, or POST\GET data) is injected in to
JavaScript without sanitization - this poses a possible security vulnerability
and would likely cause the extension to malfunction if a quotation mark were
included in any of the pieces of text.

The following lines in CustomToolbar.php are possibly affected: 152, 159, 166,
331, 332, and 333.

Export/Import is designed for copying the history or content of a page from one
wiki to another. AFAIK, Import isn't designed so that people can download the
XML docuument, then re-upload it.

Something like ? It
doesn't support regex yet, but it does seem to be maintained at least.
I don't know of any premade PHP scripts, but I know Pywikipedia has one and
writing a simple one shouldn't be too difficult.

1. Define the search expression and replace text
2. Load the list of page to edit from a text file or something
3. Login to the site with action=login
4. Get the pagetext for each from prop=revisions
5. Perform the replacements
6. Save the pages with action=edit

> Also, I think the import solution is better than an API solution in one
> respect: you can see and validate your changes (in the XML file) before
> import.
> With the API, if you get your search-and-replace patterns wrong (which is

> than modifying an XML file you can check in advance.
>

If this is that much of a concern, add "save the text to a file or run through
action=parse and load in a browser and wait for user input" before saving in
the above steps.

[Bug 17599] New: Special:Import requires a page refresh/resend before completing request.

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon

   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.15-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Keywords: testme
  Severity: major
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Export/Import
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: hammer.of.t...@hotmail.com

This affects the Tok Pisin Wikipedia at the moment; I am unsure as to whether
other Wikis are affected.

Whilst using Special:Import to bring in some babel language templates from
enwp, upon hitting submit, I get a blank page returning with the submit URI at
the top of the page. It requires me to refresh/resubmit again in order to
complete the import of the requested pages.

Imports are authorised from en:wp, en:wikt and simple:wp.

Can someone please investigate this to find out what is causing this issue?

Locally, I am running on Mandriva 2009.0 with Firefox 3.0.5.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16180

--- Comment #1 from Kanjy   2009-02-21 17:18:49 UTC ---
I'm sorry, my sample code (1) - (4) in the previous message was not good.
I reviewed the current InitialiseSettings.php at the noc, and I rewrote my
sample code as I posted to our village-pump page:
http://ja.wikiversity.org/w/index.php?oldid=3981#Upload_and_transwiki_2

(1) RESTRICT UPLOAD:
We decided that only custodians (= sysops) may upload files locally. Most files
should go to Commons.

'groupOverrides' => array(
..

'jawikiversity' => array(
'user' => array( 'upload' => false ),
'autoconfirmed' => array( 'upload' => false ),
'sysop' => array( 'upload' => true ),
),

(2) ADD TRANSWIKI-IMPORT SOURCE:
We accept transwiki-import from English Wikiversity.
We would like to add 'en' to wgImportSources for 'jawikiversity'.

'wgImportSources' => array(
..

'jawikiversity' => array( 'w', 'wikt', 'b', 'q', 's', 'n',
'en', 'betawikiversity' ),

(3) NEW NAMESPACE "Transwiki":
We need a new custom namespace "Transwiki" as the 110th namespace.
Its talk space should be "Transwiki‐ノート".

'wgExtraNamespaces' => array(
..

'jawikiversity' => array(
100 => 'School',
101 => 'School‐ノート',
102 => 'Portal',
103 => 'Portal‐ノート',
104 => 'Topic',
105 => 'Topic‐ノート',
110 => 'Transwiki',
111 => 'Transwiki‐ノート',
),

(4) NAMESPACE NAME "Wikiversity_talk":
We wish that a namespace name "Wikiversity_talk" should be recognized as the
5th (project talk) namespace, so as not to import Beta/English project talk
pages into our article namespace.

'wgNamespaceAliases' => array(
..

'jawikiversity' => array(
 'Wikiversity_talk' => NS_PROJECT_TALK,
),

[Bug 3252] request for (xmytex) LaTeX extension

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #4 from bernhard.kle...@gmx.net  2009-02-21 16:24:28 UTC ---
I have seen the WikiTeX link! But it tells that chemistry has been included on
WikiTeX. This is also true for e.g. wikisophia, where tags are actually
working. But it is not true for wikipedia where the same constructs are not
translated into structures. This inclusion is heartfully desired.

[Bug 17554] Special:Import should optionally set timestamp and summary comment

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17554

--- Comment #2 from Dan Barrett   2009-02-21
13:11:53 UTC ---
Hmmm. I don't see why this is "modifying aspects of the page history." It's
just importing a new, current version at the current time, not in the past.

If the MediaWiki API can do this simply, that's great. Where can I see a
complete example that does search-and-replace in general? ("In general"
meaning "you don't have to write a new PHP script for every search/replace
operation.") Somehow I wonder, if it were this simple, wouldn't someone
already have written a search-and-replace Special Page?

Also, I think the import solution is better than an API solution in one
respect: you can see and validate your changes (in the XML file) before import.
 With the API, if you get your search-and-replace patterns wrong (which is VERY
easy to do), you've modified your content wrongly. I find that more "scary"
than modifying an XML file you can check in advance.

[Bug 17597] New: Record links to special pages in the data base

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17597

   Summary: Record links to special pages in the data base
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.15-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
CC: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net

This is a followup to bug 16162
Currently, special page links are not being recorded in the database.
Imho, it would be useful to start doing that so as to:
- allow "what links here" on special pages (at least useful
  to maintainers)
- gain the potential to speed up lookups by moving some
  servertime and usertime eating handling to the process of
  saving a page (once) rather than leaving it in the process of
  serving a page (likely performed more often)

Atm, there are various names addressing any special page
(generic, aliased, localized, fallback language(s), fallback
language(s) localized). They a are resolved via http redirects.
This may cause redirect chains of up to 5 http requests causing
server load, bandwidth use, and remarkable delays to users,
rewritten URLs in Browsers, and maybe other inconveniences.

Resolving all these once, during page saving, internally,
and later using the final result, should imho be advantagous.

Various nice side effects, such as added lookups, come with it.

(We should not abandon the redirect stuff though,
because there may be old, or hand-edited URLs, and we need to
cope with possible changes of localized names before the
database has been completely updated)

There is just one snag: Links to special pages may be parameterized. They come
in several kinds:
1. Special:Page/parameter
2. {{Special:Page|parameterlist}}
3. {{fullurl:Special:Page|parameterlist}}

For the time being, I'd suggest to postpone version 3 until
a working solution for the others has been found (with 3 in
mind of course), and then transform these external links into
some kind of internal ones.

I momentarily have no proposal to make as to how to handle
parameters, since I am not familiar enough with the details
involved. Only two basic approaches:
- keep parameters in the database somehow (with the benefit
  to use them in queries, but inconsistent with e.g.
  template parameters)
- do not keep parameters in the db, rather let the parser get
  them when needed (with added flexibility of having less static
  parameters, such as current user, language, time, cookies, etc.)
I lean towards the latter.

During the process of saving such links, e.g.
 Special:ListAdmins
 Special:UserList/sysop
 → {{Special:UserList|group=sysop}}
needs to be completely broken down into an unambiguous final
canonical representation. That has implications:
- Parameters may not be visible in the original wikicode of a
  page. Where to keep them, if not in the db? Shall we accept
  to rewrite the Wikicode of "Special:ListAdmins" at least to
  "Special:UserList/sysop" so as to have a string reference to
  "sysop" when rendering?
- So as to obtain a way of breaking down parameters, we need to
  rely on the parameter handling of individual special pages.
  Thus, they need to get an additional entry point to be called
  during page save for this purpose. While that is generally
  not a big problem per se, it requires perhaps some care to
  be taken regarding cases such as:
- Special:UserList/{{#case:{{localtime-am-pm}}|am=sysop|pm=bot}}
  This example is silly. I could not find useful ones without
  resorting to such complex things like building a page
  on a users geo-coordiantes being used in an extension like
  Semantic MediaWiki e.g. collecting places of interest in
  walking distance to him or her. I do not know wether or not
  this is a problem.
  At least, the new internal parameter handling call of special
  pages needs generally be aware of the fact that, it may receive
  unparseable stuff which can only be resolved when the page is
  finally being rendered.
  Not having gone into the implementation details, a possible
  caveat might be:
   Special:UserList/{{something}}
   → {{Special:UserList|group={{something
   → {{Special:UserList|user={{something
  depending on {{something}}.
So, likely, this bug is going to spawn additional ones to be dealt with before
it can be completely solved.

There is nothing we can do for this. It is in the control of browsers (or even
in the toolkit) if they allow copy-pasting from one password field to another.

Gender is cached, which means that pages are not updated even if user changes
his gender preference. We cannot just provide it with a new name and pretend it
would work as you want. You can't have dynamic content on normal pages - only
in special pages.

 (In reply to comment #3)
> Just give it a proper name ({{STATUS}} or {{ONLINE}}), to not force people to
> misuse {{GENDER}}.

We are not forcing anybody.

> Either make a magic word (exactly the same like {{GENDER}}) or see this as a
> request to enable Extension:OnlineStatus on Wikimedia wikis.

One thing in one bug.

[Bug 17596] New: Enable "What links here" link in toolbox of special pages

2009-02-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17596

   Summary: Enable "What links here" link in toolbox of special
pages
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.15-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Special pages
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
CC: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net

There are links to special pages in other pages.
There is no reason to hide those links from the eye of the user.
Thus the "what links here" link in the "toolsbox" on each
special page can, and should, be available as well as already everywhere else.

We started recording page sizes relatively recently, so pages older than that
do not have it. Not sure what we should do about this.
