What is the point if he can unblock himself and then do the all actions again?
What if someone blocks everybody else from using user rights?

[Bug 17612] New: Allow users to specify individual fallback languages in Spezial:Preferences

2009-02-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17612

 Summary: Allow users to specify individual fallback languages in
Spezial:Preferences
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.15-svn
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Internationalization
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
CC: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
Depends on: 17608

Currently, fallback languages are fix for each langauges. They undoubtedly
represent a "best choice" but:
1) There are instances of groups of people of (usually small) languages who are
fluent in a third language while next to illiterate in the fallback language.
2) When developing new translations, you want to quickly and easily compare
your new, or yet to be made, translation to various other languages. These are
usually the ones a translator happens to know, and thus completely
inpredictable.
3) Individuals may happen to know an arbitrary set of languages well, which is
unrelated to the fallback languages of their preferred localizations. Why not
give them the best set of understandable texts possible?
4) Maybe more.

Caveat: Use of this feature may degrade cacheability of pages.
When that is an issue, pages using nonstandard fallback chains need to be
marked in a way that allows caches to distinguish them from standard ones, in
cases when they are indeed different. The relative number of such occurrences
can safely be estimated to be quite low, however.

This doesn't work for me, either on meta or en.wiki; I get "You are not allowed
to execute the action you have requested".

I think that the more original method suggested is superior anyway;
'overloading' this interface to provide information as well as control is both
complicated (need loads of new security checks) and confusing given that it has
a different layout to that for local groups. We want to be working towards
greater integration between local and global rights, not less.

There is a huge difference between accepting that there will be a
nds.wikisource and the acceptance of a wrong headed change in the code that is
associated with the code.

I can live with a nds.wikisource. The change for the localisation of nds to
nds-de is just wrong.

I do not deny the existence of Low Saxon. What I do find is that currently
there is noone interested in a real solution. All I hear is trolling about how
the ISO got it wrong. There are procedures of getting it right, the request for
Altzgebergisch is an example of this.
Thanks,

Well, the change is not in accordance with ISO, but it is fully in accordance
with the existing structures of Wikimedia. If you accept the shared
nds.wikisource and accept the existing projects for German and Dutch Low Saxon
with nds codes, then why don't you accept that this is also reflected by the
localisations? That's absolutely inconsequent.

There is no possible way to arrange locale codes in a way that is in accordance
with ISO. It's possible to request changes to the ISO codes. But independant
from code changes, why not take ISO with a grain of salt and just do the right
thing? ISO 639 codes are a tool and not a regulation authority.

In RC when multiple edits to the same page are made there is a blue arrow which
one may click to show each specific edit. (well, if enhanced changes are
enabled in the users preferences)

When the arrow is clicked it loses focus (since another arrow is displayed).
When navigating using the keyboard this is very inconvenient - so the JS should
actively change focus to the new arrow.

locales? Present a solution instead of just destructing other peoples
solutions.

[Bug 17592] move nds to nds-de, newly create nds locale

2009-02-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #11 from Gerard Meijssen 2009-02-22

Hoi,
I object to the renaming of the localisation of the nds localisation of
MediaWiki to nds-de. It is completely wrong. The current situation where nds is
used for the German localisation/orthography and where nds-nl is a sad
compromise is fine with me.

I also object to your characterisation that I destruct other peoples solution
as it is not a valid solution, the arguments speak for itself. You destroy the
legitimacy of your position by asking me to take ISO with a grain of salt. The
reality is that by using the ISO standards we are bound by its terms of use.
This means that we do not invent things that are in the standard.

Your opposition of ISO and your refusal to cooperate to find a solution with
ISO make you part of the problem and not part of a solution.
Thanks,
 GerardM

Please clean up the imagePage.php to have proper HTML and no more FIXME/TODO in

I have make a few little change. My matter is to wrap "morelinkstoimage" within
the div "mw-imagepage-section-linkstoimage", because it belongs to the other
things in that div.

I cannot help by the TODO and FIXME.

I hope "user interface" is the right component.

I would highly appreciate it if you were to find some time to look into this.

[Bug 17592] move nds to nds-de, newly create nds locale

(In reply to comment #12)
> What would be the code of the _new_ shared locale?
There is no such thing as a shared locale. There is the understanding that Low
Saxon is both a macro langauage and a language. The language has ISO 639-3 code
'nds'. Just leave it at that, and introduce additional locales whenever they
are needed, which registered users can use.

That comes down creating 'nds.wikisource.org' as the wikisource for all
languages part of the macro language Low Saxon, with standard language Low
Saxon (nds).

Ideally (my point of view), nds-nl, should have a fall back to whichever is the
dominant Low Saxon language spoken in the Netherlands, which in turn would fall
back to Dutch (nl). The current Low Saxon (nds) locale can remain as it is,
fall back to German, and newly created locales can fall back to whatever locale
is preferred. Problem solved.

This becomes bizarre. This entry is about _creating_ a shared locale. The
language committee - as a prerequisite for the Low Saxon Wikisource -
requested, that the Low Saxon community created a policy about how to handle
our spelling differences. We did that and part of the policy is, that the
shared wikisource project will use a locale in shared spelling by default.

Shared spelling is not realistic. It means that you are going to create yet

orthographies. By the way they are not locales. Locales are rather different.

A example is the link in MediaWiki:Centralauth-merge-notlogged.

The problem: The link in address line of the browser where change by MediaWiki
to the localized one. It is better, when it where done before, so the link in
HTML is equal to the link in address line.

ReportedBy: rene.kijew...@fu-berlin.de

Often it would be very helpful to do batch edits. Especially for replacing
works you may want to change 8 articles in one go and don't have to wait 20
seconds per article to do a change. Often one wants to mark 5 articles with
exactly the same text. I could think about such a request:

/api.php?
action=edit&
title=A|B|C&
summary=batch%20edit&
text[0]=article%201%20content&
text[1]=article%202%20content&
text[2]=article%203%20content&
basetimestamp[0]=20070824123454&
basetimestamp[1]=20070824123453&
basetimestamp[2]=20070824123452&
&token=%2B\

and

/api.php?
action=edit&
title=A|B|C&
summary=Added%20&
appendtext=&
&token=%2B\

such the request distinguishes between simple parameters and field parameters.
For simple parameters the value should be used for all articles.
For single article requests the result should be perfectly the same like now
and arrays for multi article requests.

I'm using kmltool in a French article using the modèle:KML. There is a big
problem with the interpretation of French accent by kmltool, wikipedia or
Google. For instance, the calling of KML is with and
FULLPAGENAME. In the cas of Liste des volcans d'Europe
(http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_volcans_d%27Europe), FULLPAGENAME
should give "Liste_des_volcans_d%27Europe" but it gives
"Liste+des+volcans+d%26%2339%3BEurope" which makes Google Maps and KML bomb.

Other accents in the articles caused ASCII interpretation bugs : Google Maps is
having trouble with the é in the Amérique heading. It was sent as U+00E9 and
Google refused to parse the data, but when sent as U+C3A9, it works

I'm trying to write Extension:MediaWikiAuth, which authenticates against a

successful.

Obviously, it'd be nice if the user's options were transferred as well.
Unfortunately, the user's email address does not appear to be available through
the API, although it is visible if you actually load the preferences page. It
would be useful if it was, perhaps as an additional parameter in
userinfo/options.

It must be a bug in webkit. Has anyone seen this before?

You are absolutely right. I hadn't spent much time fixing up the design since
we launched and it wasn't primary then. So, hopefully the redesign pushed up
today helps some.

Notes on after the redesign:

* Went with a small W for the logo. Screen real estate is prime.
* GO is required for phones which might not have a built in search button.
* Random article is now the logo on the home page... after you click it once
(usually it will be by surprise after heavy use) it gives you a message letting
you know what just happened.
* The link on the footer has been implemented.
* We currently *officially* support 7 languages. The software can handle more,
but without localization for the others.

We are accepting new localizations with patches to the file...

Please feel free to add any new languages you want.

You mean that this still hasn't been added yet? :O

There is a template on Wikipedia that could use ROOTPAGENAME, so please do
this.
