[Bug 17647] New: Make the Edittools work properly

 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: CharInsert
AssignedTo: br...@wikimedia.org

The CharInsert is particularly used with the "Edittools". This is currently a
system message and a .js

I had a look at the info as provided on mediwiki.org. What would be good is if
the functionality was improved because according to Splarka, the inputbox is
non standard, the functionality is not localised and it would be cool if this
just worked. With improved functionality, the current mess that exists on many
projects can be sorted out.

A naive user like myself is currently lost when he tries to install this
functionality.
Thanks,
 GerardM

Sharpening adds a slight halo at the edgges of the petals (attachment #5857).
Reducing the JPEG quality adds some blocking artifacts, and creates an
increased halo at the petal edges (attachment #5858). It also reduces the file
size by 46%, which of course is the point. It would be helpful to know which of
these two processes it is that you're objecting to. But I suspect this is going
to be a WONTFIX either way.

Sorry, I misread the diff number. A test wiki that always runs SVN
head would be invaluable for checking these things; although there are
obviously security considerations (couldn't be directly linked to the Wikimedia
CentralAuth network, for instance, which would admittedly make patches like
this harder to check).

What are your thoughts on a Special:ListGlobalGroupRights page in an
identical format to Special:ListGroupRights, however? I maintain that this
is a preferable system, encouraging closer integration between local and global
groups which is AFAIK the way we're heading.

Sounds redundant to what was just implemented -- it makes sense to repurpose
the same interface to change and view the same thing -- we don't use a separate
interface for editing and for viewing the source of a page.

The patch that I wrote last year seemed to work okay for the integration you
suggested, but is too big for the features it provides, and therefore hasn't
been, and is unlikely to be reviewed and merged into HEAD.

I would prefer that we changed ListGroupRights to be a change *and* view
interface for local group rights, rather than add an additional read-only
interface for global rights.

The extension would be almighty useful, not only in the English Wikipedia. Ex.
I wanted create a global citation template for citing all types of sources in
the Esperanto Wikipedia but have had to stop the work because of the error
Expansion depth limit exceeded
(http://eo.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=%C5%9Cablono:Fontindiko/monografio&oldid=2183672).
Nevertheless, in such a complicated template I cannnot avoid creating of deep
condition trees, if it isn't able to use variables. They would help and besides
simplify the work extremely.

Add br clear when the if the toolbar is not active.

In shared.css, #toolbar is given the style clear:both; to avoid floats
intruding from the text area. (for example: an image that floats on the side,
see this for an example how it should NOT be:
:w:de:Image:Brclearmissing.png).
If the user turns off the toolbar in his preferences, or if he doesn't activate
Javascript, this fails (see linked image above). The attached patch should fix
this, as it gives out a if the toolbar is not active.

[Bug 15030] List global group rights similar to Special:ListGroupRights

2009-02-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon

I agree it's redundant; my question is which is the preferable solution. I
like the principle of your epic patch in bug15252 but, as you say, it's
probably too big to ever be properly reviewed. However, regardless of
when/whether that is likely to be implemented, the two systems are *still* not
synchronised. I'm more interested in a consistent interface for viewing and/or
editing group permissions, than on what precisely that interface is. There are
currently a number of inconsistencies:

1) Name: Special:ListGroupRights vs Special:GlobalGroupPermissions.
I'd argue that the name of the former is actually disingenuous: by our usual
convention, "rights"<=>"groups" rather than "rights"<=>"permissions", IMO.
Would a rename to Special:GroupPermissions be sensible? It *shouldn't* be a
breaking change, since all potentially-breakable bots/scripts should certainly
be using the API functionality (which is actually older). Naturally we make a
special page redirect from ListGroupRights.

2) UI layout: I can't really visualise how the interface will look without
being able to compare the source to a running version, but I can tell that it's
not the same as ListGroupRights. It would be a Good Thing for the display to
be consistent.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION:

The page is invalid XHTML, because some
of the "id" attributes for elements are not unique.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Launch the validator:
2. Enter the address:
3. Click the "Check" button, or press the Return key.

ACTUAL RESULTS:

- Errors found while checking this document as XHTML 1.0 Transitional!
- Result: 6 Errors
- Line 697, Column 128: ID "CITEREFPodolakWeizman.2C_A..3B_Marley.2C_M.1995"
already defined.
- An "id" is a unique identifier...
- ...

EXPECTED RESULTS:

- This document was successfully checked as XHTML 1.0 Transitional!
- Result: Passed
- ...

NOTES:

1. In the wikitext, the and elements
contain the same information (except that the first also contains an url).
2. The duplicate "id" attributes don't appear to be used within the XHTML
document.
3. Possibly related to Bug 10218 [Sanitizer doesn't validate attribute values
according to DTD].

Add a $doCount flag to Title::isDeleted, and set it to "FALSE" for Edit Page
and Special:Upload.

When editing a page, isDeleted is called, which counts the amount of revisions
in the archive for that article. There's no reason to count that, if all we
want to see is if the page is deleted or not. And on pages with a lot of
deleted revisions (such as bot histories), it can become very slow.

This patch adds a flag to isDeleted that controls whatever to see if there are
any revisions, or to count the actual revisions, depending on the usage.

What ever the problem with the patch is

I'd like to provide a solution for the problem that there appears a single
checkbox when there is only one namespace given. When you have an idea for a
better solution so please make it better. I have no experience with PHP and
it's 5 minute coding to have a solution at all.

But like I see nobody cares about this

I can, directly on the links provided by Platonides. If you click the first
link he gave, it shows you Special:Prefixindex (ignore the firstHeading name, I
think they customized it). You see a pagination link in the upper right corner
that would *lead* you to believe it's the next page worth of results. However,
it instead gives you that title as your prefix, not a 2nd page of results.

I can. It works fine when you're using Prefixindex with an actual prefix, but
when you blank the prefix box, click Go, then click Next page, you get this
bug.

The cause seems to be that the Next page link doesn't include the &prefix=foo
parameter, which is there when using a prefix but absent when not using one;
adding &prefix= to the URL gives the expected result.

[Bug 17650] XHTML validation errors -- some "id" attributes are not unique

2009-02-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17650

--- Comment #2 from Ben Rimmington 2009-02-24
18:12:57 UTC ---
@Danny B: I found the following bugs:

Bug 4515 [The Sanitizer doesn't validate the contents of id attributes]
(resolved as duplicate of 9530).

Bug 6301 [Multiple stub templates in an article make it non-W3C-compliant]
(resolved as duplicate of 4515).

Bug 7356 [User-specified HTML IDs can be the same as interface IDs].

Bug 7662 [HTML IDs for headings can be the same than existing IDs] (resolved as
duplicate of 7356).

Bug 9530 [Section heading anchors shouldn't begin with invalid characters].

Bug 10218 [Sanitizer doesn't validate attribute values according to DTD].

Bug 11625 [Extensions are Blind to IDs and Anchor Names Already in Use]
(resolved as duplicate of 7356).

I don't know if any of those bugs are a match, because in this case the "id"
attributes are generated by the parser, not hard-coded by the user. I'm also
unaware of what the Sanitizer does, and whether it is responsible for fixing
this kind of problem.

Is the wikitext of the article invalid?
Should the and wikitext elements
somehow refer to a shared cite element in the ==References== section,
instead of using their own inline cite elements?

P.S. Is your Bug 13926 a duplicate of Bug 7356? (Comments 6 and 7 also mention
using an "mw-" prefix).

[Bug 17604] Delete Extension:Passwordstr

@demon: I won't explain why reducing the number of possible choices reduces
password security. Read basic texts on the subject matter.

The only potentially productive thing towards more security that this extension
could do was enforcing a minimum password length.

Forcing specific sets of symbls into passwords (digits, ASCII,
interpunctuation, lowercase, uppercase, etc.) reduces passwort security in
general. If this extension is not deleted, the we MUST clearly caution
potential users not to use such counterproductive kinds of rules, unless they
really WANT to weaken statistic security.

> @demon: I won't explain why reducing the number of possible choices reduces
> password security. Read basic texts on the subject matter.

It doesn't materially reduce the number of possible choices. The number of
possible choices in any event is roughly 2^x, where x is the max POST size in
bits. Typically x will be on the order of at least 10,000,000, and even
banning all Unicode characters will not reduce this a whole lot.

I think this kind of extension is really annoying, and a much better
implementation would be to rely more on dictionaries and length.
carnivorousstegasauroid is a lot more secure than Password1234, but the former
would probably be banned by many simplistic password strength checkers when the
latter would not. But it prevents people from using passwords like "password"
and so is almost certainly an increase in security -- I think the reason for
deletion is bogus.

If the extension encourages banning non-ASCII characters, this should be fixed.
It can be done without deleting the whole extension.

The solution would be to replace /[0-9]/, /[A-Z]/ and /[a-z]/ regex with
\p{N}, \p{Ll} and \p{N}

(In reply to comment #7)

Completely agree.

Perhaps instead of measuring that it contains many characters we should measure
the number of possibilities on that subset
So the first one would have 23*26 = 588 points of password strength (23 lower
case letters) and the second one
12*(2*26+10) = 744 password strength points (12 uppercase, lowercase and
numers).

That could them refined. The second one could instead be considered as 8
letters followed by 4 numbers: 8*2*26 + 4*10 = 456

The difficulties arise in determining how large is the "letters" block for
non-western languages. But even if only detecting
weak passwords on latin1, it could prove useful.

Another option would be using that system as a javascript password strengh
measurer.

One way I've seen it done is to say something like "Minimum length 12
characters. -1 if it contains [a-z], -1 if it contains [A-Z], -1 if it
contains [0-9], -1 if it contains other printable ASCII, -2 if it contains
non-ASCII", with all the minuses stacking. Then you could use a six-character
password, as long as it was something like aAa1!א. This particular heuristic
still discriminates against non-English languages (Chinese people need to have
entire sentences as passwords?!), but it could be refined.
