Note that at least a good coupe of weeks should pass before this is done to
iron out some of the remaining rev_deleted issues.

--- Comment #10 from FT2 2009-04-29 04:14:44 UTC ---
(Copying from an email sent earlier today on this topic, with minor edits)

As an oversighter,I have very rarely used oversight for quite some time now,
and if I do, it's after some reflection.

The main reason I would use oversight, and why we still have use for that tool,
is that there are cases where it is important the edit vanishes and is not
merely marked as "deleted". Not at all common, but it happens. Trivial
examples:

1/ A stalker/harasser leaves a "love note" for their target - they post as an
IP or throwaway sock. They don't care if it's deleted/hidden/suppressed,
because the "[deleted]" comment will remain, their target will know they were
"visited" and are still being targeted, and that's the effect they are after.
We do have a couple of people like this.

2/ [Deleted - BEANS. Will provide on request to developers/stewards/cu/os,
etc.]

As said, I don't use Oversight much these days (3 times in Feb, once in April,
compared with about 120 using suppression for March-April), but until
RevisionDeleted has an option "Hide existance of revision from users unable to
see it", I can see oversight still being needed at times, in some very serious
kinds of cases.

I would therefore be reluctant to see it removed without some kind of
confirmation by oversighters that its absence would not reduce their ability to
do the job in serious cases of this kind.

[Bug 18613] Make filling in the "reason" field for CheckUser checks compulsory

2009-04-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18613

--- Comment #7 from FT2 2009-04-29 02:08:15 UTC ---
(In reply to #5)

Have you checked the pages for blocking and deletion recently? These have
multiple fields, and while none are compulsary, they do speed up entering
useful information and (as Avi says) serve as a reminder.

Blocking for example - "Reason" and "Other/additional reason" (and a name
field, 2 time fields, and 6 checkboxes).

Or deletion - "Reason for deletion" and "Other/additional reason".

Checkuser is a privacy based function, where fewer eyeballs see them, and
accordingly a higher standard of checkability is needed. An edit with no edit
summary is not much of an issue. A check lacking a clear explanation is
different. A couple of optional fields to both prompt users to enter that data,
and standardize it for ease of review, would be good. Not every project needs
it, but some may wish to have it.

Oh, please no! One reason box is enough - /maybe/ a dropdown of predefined
reasons could be useful in some cases (if optional). Your suggestion is pure
bloat - just put it in the reason field.

Nice idea. In any event, like other action pages, fields to prompt uers to
enter useful information is a good idea. I would have 3 fields for quick entry
(compare: delete/block):

"Source". (On-wiki request, WMF hosted mailing list, private request by an
enwiki functionary, private request by another project functionary, private
request by anyone else, personal observation, recheck existing case, audit,
other);

"Case". (Or wikilink to page, etc)

"Other info".

This is comparable to the block and delete pages, that have a dropdown box and
also a box for "other information". In this case adding a dropdown box for
"source", which is extremely useful for review.

I would suggest a $wg variable with the default to off. While it's noble to
want a reason each time, it doesn't seem reasonable to force non-Wikimedia
wikis that have CheckUser installed to have someone type in a reason each time.
Wikimedia wikis can, of course, set it however the sysadmins / community
decide.

I love the idea of a greylist (& note that "suspicious edit patterns" is
covered by bug 18110).

However, creating an account requires solving a captcha - that's not targeted

[Bug 18620] New: Improve TablePager (patch)

2009-04-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18620

   Summary: Improve TablePager (patch)
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.15-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Keywords: need-review, patch
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: happy-me...@live.com

Created an attachment (id=6068)
 --> (https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=6068)
Patch to Pager.php, against r49962

I'm currently plugging away at formatting [[Special:Allmessages]] using the
TablePager class, from Pager.php. In order to avoid some horrible hacks
(returning a value of """foo" rowspan="2""" to fill into something like "") I made a few changes to TablePager itself, which I think
can probably stand on their own, so I'm submitting them separately here. With
this patch in place, the code in
/extensions/CodeReview/CodeRevisionListView.php marked with evils (line273-295)
can also be refactored; it shouldn't be necessary to overload the formatRow()
function at all.

Changes are quite simple: setting $mCurrentRow right at the start of the
function, so its context is available for the attribute-getting functions (this
is the issue that forced CodeReview to clone the function), replacing the
over-specific getRowClass() function with a more general getRowAttrs(), and
implementing a parallel getCellAttrs(). getRowClass() is still retained for
B/C, naturally. I think it's fully backwards-compatible, and it certainly
works on my test install, although I haven't tested it with CodeReview itself.
Bitsize chunks :D

I think we should just stick to using the the page info template. (it would not
"hurt" to have this feature but its lower priority I think)

Often you don't want to link exactly to the
http://myCDN.com/hashed/path/oFtHeImAge.JPG rather you want to link to the
source "page" or source assets page of the image. This can be managed with
add_media_wizards to be integrated with the page asset description template.

URL uploads should be more and more managed by add media wizards that structure
the template for remote asset inclusion. Expert users should know to have a
source url for the asset.

This is not to say this info would not be useful to query at in a structured
way. Just that it will be of higher quality if we leave it to the |Source tag
in the image desc for now. Getting at this data would ofcourse be nice... We
have lots of structured data problems and I would group source assets resource
page linkback into part of that problem set.

It still *says* that it's deleting, so this is really just introducing a bug
that makes it not work for no user-visible reason. :)

Needs UI fix -- indicate to the user that nothing will be deleted unless they
pass the extra parameter, and tell them what it is!

[Bug 18616] New: Local evaluation of magic words for commons files

2009-04-28 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18616

Summary: Local evaluation of magic words for commons files
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Language setup
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: cenarium.sy...@gmail.com

For commons files, magic words such as {{CONTENTLANGUAGE}} or {{SERVERNAME}}
are not evaluated locally but with the commons values. File descriptions are
often given in a variety of languages to make it readable in the language of as
many projects as possible, but it clogs the description and makes finding the
relevant language more difficult.

So it would be very helpful for readers to only show the description in the
local language, using {{CONTENTLANGUAGE}} (one may even give the option to show
other languages if desired). So this magic word would be evaluated locally. For
other magic words, I imagine there may be reasons not to do it, we may ask at
commons about that.

The discussion was done in the teacher room of Wikibooks-nl and you will find
that here:

Discussion started on the 8th of april and final proposal was on 14th of April
until today (2 weeks later) there was no objection to start with a trial of
Abusefilter.

When formatting user comments, we need to make sure we're not interfering with

It is currently not compulsory to fill in the "reason" field when doing a
CheckUser investigation. This requirement would not be onerous on the user
doing the check and would greatly aid oversight.

When logged-in users edit their own monobook.js file, a tip box appears above
the edit area, displaying the following:

Tip: Use the 'Show preview' button to test your new css/js before saving. Have
a cool style? Share it in the gallery of user styles.

Upon clicking the link "gallery of user styles", users are taken to
[http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_user_styles]. However, the content
on this page has been relocated from Meta to MediaWiki, at
[http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Gallery_of_user_styles]. There's a soft redirect
at the old meta page, but it would be easier if the link just took users to the
new page at MediaWiki.
