[Bug 19290] New: French spacing matches where it shouldn't

2009-06-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19290

   Web browser: ---
Summary: French spacing matches where it shouldn't
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.16-svn
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Page rendering
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: tstarl...@wikimedia.org

The French spacing parser feature, which converts a plain space before
punctuation into a non-breaking space, is naively implemented and has
undesirable side effects. For instance, the following wikitext:

== !!! READ THIS FIRST !!! ==

is rendered as:

...span class=mw-headlinenbsp;!!! READ THIS FIRSTnbsp;!!! /span...

The present regex matches at the start of HTML elements, as shown, and could
also match inside attributes. The solution is probably to either move it into
doMagicLinks(), or to implement something like what is there: a method for
doing regex substitution on the plain text component of HTML and not on the
attributes.

Reported on IRC by MZMcBride.

From bug 212 in comment #9:

What I would like to is to have a mechanism to detect this automatically,
something that can be enabled during development. PHP's taint module seems a
candidate, but as of now it is not easy to install.

The remaining uses are hard to find, and extension developers usually don't pay
attention to it.

Did I get it right? You want to create a totally new orthography by combining
two existing ones? Who would benefit from it? Who would use it? Who would
create it? How would you ensure that is is acceptable to both parties, neutral
and unskewed?

People can easily changes language after logging in. For unregistered users it
is not so easy, but that is an another bug.

There seems to be just too many worms in this can that I do not want to open
it. It is too much political. The language community should first tackle the
issue themselves... it is totally possible to agree on orthography, request ISO
code, setup own installation of Translate extension and create localisation or
whatever they want - outside of MediaWiki and outside of WMF. When this is all
in place then it is ok to request adding a new localisation to MediaWiki.

(In reply to comment #14)
This becomes bizarre. This entry is about _creating_ a shared locale. The
language committee - as a prerequisite for the Low Saxon Wikisource -
requested, that the Low Saxon community created a policy about how to handle
our spelling differences. We did that and part of the policy is, that the
shared wikisource project will use a locale in shared spelling by default.

I do not know if the any existing Wikisources have problems about not having
neutral locales, but I think they are doing fine. There can't be a neutral
locale if such doesn't exists. Can the community perhaps reconsider the policy?
Where is it documented? The whole thing doesn't seem to be fully thought out.

Right now [[MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer-anon]] is only visible on
Special:Contributions when IP address has some edits. This has to be fixed.

Reason: it's very inconvenient to get info on such IP, especially for non-admin
users with no access to Special:DeletedContributions.

The user then has to go to Recent Changes, find any IP address, from it's
contribs click on the desired tool link, then paste the IP address in question.

Lately it became even worse with the IPs who only triggered AbuseFilter but
made no edits yet.

It was fixed with r49331/r49350/r51924/r52017

I suggest to do the same for the Modern skin.

[Bug 6455] Enable StringFunctions on WMF wikis

Tim has stated pretty clearly that string functions will not be enabled on
Wikimedia wikis, so I'll mark this WONTFIX.

. . . that's in r51497. Quote from diff:

+/**

users.
+ * An alternative, saner solution for embedding complex text processing in

It's pretty clear this isn't going to be enabled on Wikimedia.

bug 6455 to enable the string parsing capabilities of ParserFunctions

and the Lua extension is a saner alternative. If that is the case, please
enable it on WMF wikis. Reasons for why string processing would be useful can
be found in the discussion for that bug.

Not very likely to happen on Wikimedia, as discussed elsewhere (mainly IRC that
I remember). The Lua extension requires installation of a PHP extension and/or
the ability to use exec(). If it were enabled on Wikimedia, all templates
would use it pretty soon, and anyone on shared hosting without either of these
rights would be unable to use large chunks of Wikimedia content. PHP extension
installation requires root access, and exec() is unsafe on shared hosts that
have all PHP executed by a single user (using mod_php, FastCGI, etc.).

Yes, but changing it now would cause a regression with no work-around as far
 as I can see.
Not really. To solve the problem, a _recipient-specific_ selection and
generation of the Enotif-message texts is needed (which are currently in one
language only: as mentioned English or, a translation of it). Such generation
must be done for all i recipients with language 1, for all j recipients with
language 2 and so on - a lot of additional processing.

In my opinion, it is possible, but would make the code in UserMailer.php
function composeCommonMailtext() far too complicate. In any case, I cannot
afford to make these changes.

So it's a Catch-22 then? Sane solutions involve compiled interpreters, and

That seems to be the current situation, yes. Maybe at some point we can give
up on the requirement that you be able to fully use Wikipedia content without
exec() rights; then we could use Lua (which is *way* preferable to
StringFunctions for sure). You'd have to ask Brion about that.

Interesting idea. That would make a lot of sense. Not as powerful or nice
as Lua, but it's vastly saner syntax than StringFunctions. How easy would
 that
 be to write up?

It wouldn't be difficult to make the abuse filter parser generic enough to
include inline in wikitext.

There would be a few things to clean up enough to actually deploy it inline on
Wikimedia:
* We'd want a more comprehensive testing suite to make sure nothing regressed.
* We'd want to reimplement the parser either with a shunting-yard algorithm,
and/or in C/C++, to handle the increased load the feature would undoubtedly get
vis-a-vis the parser as used by the abuse filter.
* I understand there are a few potential security holes with user-supplied
regexes, including at least denial of service attacks by making very
computationally-difficult regexes and running them against very large test
strings. In the past there have been remote code execution vulnerabilities with
user-supplied regexes. We'd need to find some way to work around this, or
disable regexes.
* Generally speaking, there are other ways to DoS (and maybe more) the servers
with untrusted code.

[Bug 19302] New: Definition syntax cannot be escaped and is potentially unintended.

2009-06-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19302

   Web browser: Mozilla Firefox 3.0.x
Summary: Definition syntax cannot be escaped and is potentially
unintended.
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.14.0
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Page rendering
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: jesdisci...@gmail.com

I was just writing a template and was surprised when syntax similar to
`{{#ifeq:{{{param|}}}|value||; text here}}. More text here.' was emboldened
and given its own paragraph. I was separating an optional statement off from
the main sentence. Having never used definitions before and therefore clueless
why this happened, I took a guess and removd the semicolon. Aha! After
Googling a bit, I found what the semicolon was for through the bug about the
inappropriate dl/ indentation caused by the colon. Parser functions like
this apparently begin new lines (or at least new matches) implicitly for every
pipe, and thus I was seeing behavior I didn't explicitly ask for.

Workaround: Use the HTML entity #59; (#58; for colon) instead.

I suggest that:
* the beginning of line behavior of parser functions (and presumably
templates) be rewritten so only an explicit newline begins a new match; and/or
* escape sequences be designed for the semicolon and colon at the match start,
like maybe ;; and :; (additional semicolon for both).

Did I get it right?

No.

You want to create a totally new orthography by combining two existing ones?

No. It's a synthesis of two writing traditions, created by removing all of the
particularities of the two writing systems, that are not based on
intra-language needs.

Who would use it?

Everybody by default.

Who would benefit from it?

The project.

Who would create it?

The users of the projects.

How would you ensure that is is acceptable to both parties, neutral and
unskewed?

Well, when both parties are working on it, that will automatically lead to it.

People can easily changes language after logging in. For unregistered users it
is not so easy, but that is an another bug.

It is not.

It is too much political.

It's not political at all. Low Saxon is a minority language in both the
Netherlands and Germany. It's not tied to the government in any country. The
differing orthographies developed on pragmatical grounds, not on political or
ideological.

The whole thing doesn't seem to be fully thought out.

If you don't understand the issue, that doesn't mean, it's not thought out. If
you want to understand the issue, feel free to ask me questions.

On second thought, that second suggestion would leave other syntax elements
such as * and # broken. Maybe the traditional \ (backslash) would be best. It
could be simply ignored, except for its escaping nature, at a line's start.

No major problems reported with usage on meta and commons; I've no objection to
going ahead w/ it for now. Long term would be nice to clean up the
functionality and offer better workflow and UI, but it's handy sometimes!

r51870/r51943 changed the permissions from flexible strings to hardcoded
permission key values:

$wgAvailableRights[] = 'collectionsaveasuserpage';
$wgAvailableRights[] = 'collectionsaveascommunitypage';

By default no user will have these rights.

Note I've cleaned up the README.txt in r52180; the entries for the previous
variables were inadvertently left in.

[Bug 18197] Revert recentchanges limit to 5000 (id.wikipedia)

(In reply to comment #2)
The current recentchanges url is not consistent with its logic. According to
logic, ..from=20090326145934limit=500... should provide all recent
 changes
started from the older post (20090326145934) and 500 newer post. The current
logic is calculated from the newer post (now) and 500 older post, therefore it
should be changes to ..from=nowlimit=500... :D.

That is bug 18228. Note this is possible with the API, so you can fake it (eg:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Splarka/ajaxrecentchanges.js ).

[Bug 18334] Test implementation of FlaggedRevs for the English Wikipedia on en.labs.wikimedia.org

2009-06-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18334

--- Comment #6 from cenarium.sy...@gmail.com 2009-06-20 00:58:30 UTC ---
As per bug 19107, the configuration will make use of the abuse filter, so it
would be preferable to have it enabled on en.labs.wikimedia.org to test there
before a rollout on enwiki.

I would also suggest a 'passive' implementation on enwiki prior to the 'active'
two-month trial consisting of the full implementation, with the new usergroup
'reviewers' and only the 'patrol' (second level) flag, to give us time to grant
reviewers permissions (we'll use updated database reports to pre-select users,
then grant after review), and get used to the system before allowing admins to
configure stable versioning as described in the url.
