You can remove 'bot' rights of 'root' ? With bot privelegies edits of root user
hidden from Recent Changes, without this issues root rights will be very useful
for the wiki administration.

[Bug 20832] New: Automatic DOI linking, similar to PMID, RFC, and ISBN

2009-09-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20832

Summary: Automatic DOI linking, similar to PMID, RFC, and ISBN
   Product: MediaWiki Feature Request
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Feature_Request
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: oq9psc...@sneakemail.com

Please add automatic DOI linking to the MediaWiki software, similar to the
already implemented "magic words" PMID (PubMed ID), RFC (IETF Request for
Comments), and ISBN.

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_object_identifier) has become the major
identifier for (scientific) publications. It is more widespread and universal
than the PubMed identifier (PMID) that covers mainly the biomedical field. The
official DOI resolving service under http://dx.doi.org leads directly to the
linked article through browser redirects in a single step. This is a major
advantage and time saver over the PMID abstract linking.

The software should link the official DOI format
"doi:10./j.1526-4610.2007.00665.x" to
http://dx.doi.org/10./j.1526-4610.2007.00665.x (the DOI string after "doi:"
is compatible with the URI scheme and can be added without alterations to the
resolver's host name).

(A similar request has been made several years ago without any results, see bug
1378)

[Bug 20498] wikEd compatibility: toolbar focuses on hidden textarea

With the enhanced toolbar enabled, pushing the wikEd regexp button in Firefox
3.5.3 focuses the document. This lets the caret start blinking wherever it was
positioned before. For me the default position is under the edit are, right
before the "Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted..." element.
This focusing does not happen with the enhanced toolbar disabled.

The toolbar should not focus the document or any other document element when
wikEd runs, especially (but not restricted to) after pushing buttons not
belonging to it. wikEd sets the focus to its own iframe document after
processing wikEd buttons.

Re "before the new page loads": after pushing the submit or preview buttons and
before the current page disappears and the new page loads, you can see the
exact same focusing phenomenon for a moment.

Thanks for your suggestion! However I have a limited number of articles in my
wiki (ca. 100), so when no-one responded to me on the irc channel, I just went
in and fixed each messed up title manually. So now I don't think I can verify
whether this fixes the issue... Just wanted to report it as a bug in case i
helps the development.

[Bug 20831] New: Non-ascii characters in article titles messed up on upgrade from 1.11 to 1.15.1

2009-09-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon

 Component: Database

ReportedBy: a.s.lov...@media.uio.no

I just upgraded my wiki project from 1.11 to 1.15.1. I did it by re-running the
install script, since the command-line php client on my server is 4.3, not 5.
Once the upgrade was done, all non-ascii characters in article titles where
messed up. I did not conciously change the encoding for the database (didn't
make a choice, since the install page says it is ignored on updates).

Furthermore, I notice that when I point my browser to the new mediawiki config
folder, without having run the script first, the link that says "Please set up
the wiki first" points to config/index.wiki, not to index.php. It also doesn't
give a good error message if you by any chance have the permissions of the
config folder set to 700 (which I have, because I am linking in a wiki family
setup of this kind:
http://www.steverumberg.com/wiki/index.php?title=WikiHelp_-_Method_Two )

[Bug 20830] New: Put in Google Chrome Frame tags

Google Chrome Frame plugin just came out
(http://code.google.com/chrome/chromeframe/) and it offers an alternative to
installing another browser by replacing Internet Explorer's engine by using
Chrome's engine when a tag is added. Since we all know Internet Explorer's
engine is crap compared to others, instead of getting around IE's limits, why
not add a tag (or tags if needed) to make it render faster and with newer
internet standards. More info is at the link. It's still an early release
through.

Whenever you have centered heading (==Heading==), then it
somehow changes following tags in HTML so that they contain (usual text) that they shouldn't. In
case of unordered list (ordered list works the same as other tags) this causes
insetion of after every item. This probably shouldn't be visible,
but Internet Expolorer seems to ignore that style and so shows an empty list
item after every normal item.

Example:

==Heading==

* foo

is rendered as:

Heading

foo

To give a direct replay to this comment of ThomasV, the only person I know
which wants to exclude IP'S from the proofreading process ist the developer of
this extension ThomasV. He didn't get any positive feedback for his position in
the article mentioned by him.

You schould also see the discussions in the german wikisource. I'm sorry, but
these comments are in german.
http://de.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Skriptorium#Code_Update for the last
update, when there is interesst in the older problems we had, I can serch for
the discussions in the german language ws scriptorim.

The same type of discussion we hav every time when there is an code change by
ThomasV in his extension Proofread. Everytime the only way we get information
about code changes is when feateures dosn't work any longer, because of buggy,
mostly untestet code or by ThomasV intention. That is the reason I can't call
his code changes updates.

When hidden categories are shown on pages, there is a label
"Hidden category/ies:" in front of them.

I suggest to make this a link to either:
- the category of hidden categories, or
- a new special page listing hidden categories only

somewhat in analogy to the link to Special:Categeries
for the categories that are not hidden.

See the picture in attachment: the external links have a big padding before.
This does not happens on the online version.
For an unknown reason, replacing "padding: 0 npx" by "padding-rigth: npx"
resolves the issue without impacting the online version (see the patch in

These improvements (r56934) fix the issue as filed. The section names issue
described in comment #1 is a more generic case of bug 20599.

Should this be working at en.wp?
Currently [[Special:Version]] shows MediaWiki 1.16alpha-wmf (r56901), but when
I try to preview the code it doesn't shows an alert "Bug 20631"...

The revision number applies to the wmf-deployment branch, not to trunk.
Presumably r56770 on trunk wasn't merged to wmf-deployment.

IPs are allowed to participate : they can proofread and correct articles.
What you request is to let them flag an article as "proofread".

This would dramatically change the current 'double proofreading' system,
because it relies on proofreading by two different users (unless the IP
is using a fixed adress, and is whiteisted somewhere).

I would like to see a community consensus on this, outside of de.ws.
A similar proposal was made 3 months ago at ws.org and received no support

Fixed in r56948. In some browsers (for instance in Chrome), fixing this seems

Everybody should be free to participate and not to be urged to do something. If

[Bug 20812] Wikisource: IPs unable to flag articles as "proofread"

2009-09-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20812

--- Comment #6 from Cecil 2009-09-26 16:45:37 UTC ---
Also a reply to ThomasV: IPs can't proofread. Proofreading is a very
concentrated reading of the text, comparing it systematically with the scan of
the original work and then confirm that this meticulous reading was
successfully done. Anything else is just spotting an error and correcting it.
So you disabled them to do proofreading since they can't confirm it anymore by
changing the status. And why should they do it if it is nothing worth anyway.
It takes a lot of time and still two people with accounts have to do it too. So
nobody benefits from it (unless you would call 3 rounds of correcting a
benefit) but a lot of wasted time.

If somebody really wanted to sabotage the proofreading system, then he could
also just create a sockpuppet. Nobody would ever be the wiser unless he makes
it very obvious. Since there is no 'own work' included in proofreading we would
never be able to guess that it is the same user with just two accounts. That's
something that can be done in Wikipedia by comparing writing-style, typical
grammer errors and stuff, but it is impossible in Wikisource since the
writing-style is the one of Schiller, Goethe, Rilke, the brothers Grimm or some
translator.

And yes, this similar proposal received no support in your way of counting, as
you obviously don't count the reporter. But it also received no oppose in my
way of counting since you are the programmer. That does not make you more
important then the reporter of a proposal. This was a 1:1-situation and no
consensus to forbid IPs to participate. And I'm sure if the reporter would have
announced his proposal somewhere it would have gotten a lot of support. Most of
us on de.WS spend our time with working on old texts and not doing meta-work by
checking around on other projects, so we don't see them.
