[Bug 22512] A new MediaWiki extension to provide syntax highlighting with pygments

Pygments is written in Python, while MediaWiki in PHP. A monster that will
combine the two pieces, apparently by execing a Python interpreter, is not an
option for sites of any reasonable size for performance reasons. How do you
suggest to overcome this?

Hi,

I came across this the other day when i mistakenly typed Wiki:Help instead of
Wikipedia:Help at the english wikipedia site.

I've since worked out that if you type WIKI: and then any string, into the
search bar of any wikimedia site, it redirects you to a blank page on
www.c2.com.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen or not, but i thought i would bring
it up here anyway.

Cheers,
Rob

Please write a new syntax highlighting extension which uses Pygments instead of
GeSHi.

*GeSHi is showing it's age
*Pygments produces nicer highlighting in many cases
*Pygments is actively developed, and ever so much trendier (just look at the
purty webpage!)

Added tags to XMLRC's query in r62453. That extension is still nowhere near
finished, though. I've been waiting over a year for MediaWiki to have proper
change tagging support for external tools and I really don't want to wait much
longer.

How would that resolve this? Implementing that feature request would change the
UDP output format from one intended for IRC to one intended for XMPP, and send
it to a Wikimedia XMPP server. You wouldn't get any additional information
beyond what is already being sent to IRC.

Why not just go to the history drop down (if your in firefox) or the Go
dropdown (if your in internet explorer, more recent versions have it as a
sub-menu of some other drop-down) menus? Every browser implements some easy way
of finding the last ten pages you visited.

That list should be an additional feature for the "undo tab" of your browser,
not of mediawiki. If there is a clutter of tabs, there would be also such
clutter on the "recent pages" list.
You can still implement it in your javascript if you want.

[Bug 22511] New: Create a dropdown menu in the upper right corner listing recently viewed wiki pages and allowing quick navigation to them

2010-02-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon

OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement

 Component: User interface
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: nathanlarson3...@gmail.com

Create a dropdown menu in the upper right corner that, when clicked upon, will
list, perhaps, the 20 wiki pages most recently viewed by that user, and allow
quick navigation to them. As with other links, clicking on an item should
navigate to it in the window presently open, and right-clicking on it should
allow the user to open it in another browser tab.

Often in the creation of wiki pages, users will be moving back and forth
between many different pages (e.g. template pages, policy pages, etc.) It
sometimes happens that, to clear up the clutter of open tabs, a user will close
some of them and then find himself unexpectedly needing something from that
page a little later. This will make it faster and easier to find and navigate
to that page again, increasing editor productivity.

& is disabled on wmf due to broken clients. Also, entities in titles are
normalised away unless I am mistaken.

I put the ? there because [[&]] creates a link to [[&]] (perhaps also
wrong) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%26amp; is an server error.

I think the solution would be to have {{PAGENAME}} et.al. return a
"text-needs-escape" object of some kind, parser functions could then request
that they get unescaped input as a flag, the parser would then escape the text
when the escaping is neeeded.

The Django template engine deals with this issue very nicely, maybe we can copy
some of their ideas.

[Bug 22509] New: Change tags in RC feed

2010-02-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22509

Summary: Change tags in RC feed
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: IRC
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: matthew.brit...@btinternet.com

Currently the IRC RC feed does not include any information about change tags.

Given that

* change tags can be (and are) applied after the change is made
* feed lines are already too long sometimes
* preserving backwards compatibility with existing clients is important

the act of tagging would need to be sent to the feed as a separate line, in
contrast to Recent Changes where tags are displayed alongside changes.

All feed clients that I am aware of apply line-based pattern matching and
ignore unrecognized lines, so this should not break anything.

See related bug 18080, which requests that the AbuseFilter extension includes
details of filter hits. Since change tags are a core feature, it would be
cleaner to include this in core, and not have to re-implement it for any other
extensions that start using change tags.

Per:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Unwanted_space_after_character_I_click_on

If English Wikipedia IE8 users use the MediaWiki:Edittools.js to insert a
character into the editor. They get an extra space character after the
character they have inserted. This behavior started around February 10th, and
present to users who are not in the Beta.

According to one user this problem does not present if
http://bits.wikimedia.org/w/extensions/UsabilityInitiative/js/plugins.combined.min.js
is not included into the source, which it is, even for non-beta people.
