Yes that's what I was saying, but the facts appear to be even worse than that.
None of the 30k GIF files in enwiki have valid metadata.

Beta version not show the delete, protect and move tabs.
They're in the dropdown. Hover your mouse over the down arrow.

If we use the key combination on beta in IE7 / IE8 / FF3.0 in Fedora / FF 3.6
in Mac is not responding.

Which key combination?

Hi.

Format is default tile. Can be easily replicated with a text property. Just
paste the text in as above:

I spoke to Marcus. He is keen to meet. I have teed up the conversation as very
explanatory.
He is also happy to do an evening session at their office in Eastcheap. So
availability. This week is difficult for me. Next week though is better. Mon or
Tues evening? Sent from my BlackBerry wireless device

The Exhibit report will show:

do an evening session at their office in Eastcheap. So availability. This week

Example query
{{ #ask:

Title::+

In this case the Notes field is the text field.

Working for normal gifs, and small animated gifs. Large animated gifs all
create the error:
Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters or PNG file with more
than 12.5 million pixels

We should really have a better method to deal with this, at least a more
descriptive error.

Preferably we should thumb the first frame, render a play icon on top and
always load the full GIF in the image description page, or something like that.

This is a followup to 22041

If you include a special page at the beginning of a page (e.g. with
), a superfluous newline is added.
The parser adds a pbr/p; at least the br should be removed.

I strongly suspect this is a parser issue (it's a universal problem of all
includeable special pages), but I'm not sure.

[Bug 23067] New: FCK integration breaks page content because of quoting

2010-04-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23067

Summary: FCK integration breaks page content because of quoting
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: SemanticForms
AssignedTo: yaro...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: chris.vigel...@gmx.net
CC: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

When using FCK Editor/WYSIWYG extension in conjunction with Semantic Forms,
editing a page through the formedit action will break the page markup because
all double quotes are replaced by quot;. This will destroy for example the
following markup:

head
value

source lang=php
// some source here
// note this will work only with GesHI extension
/source

Steps to reproduce
1.) install Semantic Mediawiki, Semantic Forms and WYSIWYG extension
2.) edit page through form
3.) drop into Wikitext mode
4.) paste the following markup:
head
value
5.) save the page
6.) check out source of page and see that
has been changed to
which is not correct wiki markup of course

Source code hint
Quoting appears in SemanticForms/includes/SF_FormPrinter.inc line 1205:

$free_text = str_replace( , 'quot;', $free_text );

Commenting out this line does solve the problem, but may cause other problems
(I did not yet see any, but YMMV).

[Bug 23070] New: Animations are broken all over Wikipedia

Many GIF animations are now broken on both en.Wikipedia and on Commons.

The top-most animation at en.Wikipedia “Thermodynamic temperature” and a
different animation at “Non-uniform rational B-spline” now display error boxes
stating “Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters or image file
with more than 12.5 million pixels”

A particular GIF animation image appears at both Commons
( and at
en.Wikipedia (w:File:NURBS_3-D_surface.gif) is also broken.

For instance, an animation on en.Wikipedia “Thermodynamic temperature” self-ran

…ran fine until only hours ago.

I note that Derk wrote “Preferably we should thumb the first frame, render a

Am I reading correctly that a change to the way self-running animations play
when one goes to a page containing them is being contemplated here?

[Bug 23031] messages become read only after clicking Mark as read

2010-04-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #2 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2010-04-06
18:21:26 UTC ---
If this behavior is intended, it is rather disappointing.

If i understood correctly, one of the design ideas of LiquidThreads was to keep
the good things in MediaWiki's talk pages. Currently, if my user talk page on
MediaWiki changes, i get the orange banner saying that i have new messages.
Then it is enough to open my user talk page to make the notification go away -
one click only. This is not perfect, because if i received several messages, i
may miss them. But if i received only one message, which is a very frequent
scenario, having to click once more is quite annoying.

A good middle ground is to have it behave like Google Reader - if the unread
message is scrolled into the viewable part of the browser, it should become
read.

I should also mention that for many years all email clients marked the email as
read immediately after the user viewed it or a few seconds later.

I understand that it may take time to implement it, but you should at least
leave it as an enhancement.

php-1.5/wmf-config/CommonSettings.php 'GIF scaling working correctly on
testwiki, pushing to other wikis again'

Working for normal gifs, and small animated gifs. Large animated gifs all
create the error:
Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters or PNG file with more
than 12.5 million pixels

We should really have a better method to deal with this, at least a more
descriptive error.

Preferably we should thumb the first frame, render a play icon on top and
always load the full GIF in the image description page, or something like
that.

One of the problems is that GIFs with large numbers of frames require very
large amounts of memory to thumbnail under the current process.

For example this simple 400 KB image with 370 frames:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/Translational_motion.gif

Requires 85 MB to thumbnail.

For items like that, where the full file size is actually very small, we should
probably just send the whole image to the browser and let the browser handle it
as is.

(In reply to comment #2)
Self-running animations have worked for years and worked fine only yesterday.
For instance, an animation on en.Wikipedia “Thermodynamic temperature”
self-ran
since it was first put there. The animation here on NURBS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-uniform_rational_B-spline

…ran fine until only hours ago.

They ran fine because they were served unscaled however large or small they
were. Now they are being scaled, and so some of them are causing problems.
Well, problems more noticeable than filesize and image quality.

(In reply to comment #3)
I note that Derk wrote “Preferably we should thumb the first frame, render a
play icon on top and
always load the full GIF in the image description page, or something like
that.”

Am I reading correctly that a change to the way self-running animations play
when one goes to a page containing them is being contemplated here?

We're considering options for how to handle the instance where a file is large
enough that scaling it will consume a dangerous amount of memory. Currently we
just show a useless error; options suggested have included show a more helpful
error; serving a static image which links to the full file at full file*size*;
and serving the whole file unscaled and letting the browser hack at it.

Whichever method is chosen, the scaling limit should be checked at upload so
that these issues are not encountered in new files.

$out-isUserJsAllowed() always returns false for the cirtical pages, which is
good. But it also returns false if $wgAllowUserJs is false, which is bad. it
would mean that Gadgets don't work on wikis with user JS disabled.

Gadgets are more like site JS, not so much like user JS. So,
$out-isUserJsAllowed() does not seem to be the right function to call.

The only alternative I see is to add more hard-coded checks in the gadgets
extension. Which also sucks. Ideas?

Derk, is that supposed to be a permanent fix?

Quoting Robert: “For items like that, where the full file size is actually very
small, we should probably just send the whole image to the browser and let the
browser handle it as is.”

Indeed. Let’s look at that. If Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari—which has
a bug of its own with Wikipedia’s animated GIFS (I’ve alerted Apple about
it)—can scale a 398 KB GIF, let the browser handle it. That’s just my 2¢ as a
non-developer.

I might also openly wonder just how many animated GIFs there are that fall in
this category. If the thumbnailing only requires a couple of gigabytes ($100)
of server space, is it worth the fuss?

Is there a compelling reason to not restore the previous functioning until a
wall-to-wall technical solution is identified and implemented in one
fell-swoop?

Greg, No, i'm not a core software developer. It's just an idea I had of
something that might be implemented in the core, and this is a quick demo of
the idea using Javascript.

GregL, further, you make a lot of good points, but they have all been
considered WELL before. GIFS are not as easy as most people think they are,
Wikipedia is not as simple as some people think it is, and 200 animated gifs
between 20kb and 10MB (think category page) is not something you want to throw
at a browser.

Derk, is that supposed to be a permanent fix?

No; it's a temporary implementation of the proposed solution; which will
presumably be replaced by a server-side implementation.

I might also openly wonder just how many animated GIFs there are that fall in
this category. If the thumbnailing only requires a couple of gigabytes ($100)
of server space, is it worth the fuss?

The process consumes large amounts of RAM, not disk space. There would be
precious little point in a rescaling process which produced an output file two
hundred times the size of the input.

Allowing a process to exist which is known to consume measurable quantities of
a resource is a DoS vector: saving a page which requests the image above in
every size between 1 and 5000px would not exceed the maximum page size, but
could easily send an image scaler into swap trying to produce all the necessary
thumbnails.

Is there a compelling reason to not restore the previous functioning until a
wall-to-wall technical solution is identified and implemented in one
fell-swoop?

200 animated gifs between 20kb and 10MB (think category page) is not
something you want to throw at a browser.

That.

I would only make the point that category pages tend to be venues that
registered Wikipedians visit—not so much our regular I.P. editors, who
constitute some 99.95% of our readership and who are really supposed to be the
ones we are creating content for.

Mindful of that point, I suggest turning off any outrageously large category
pages so that animated GIFs will auto-play without a “Play” button. Category
pages can then be re-enabled after a wall-to-wall solution can be implemented
that doesn’t pile up the RAM requirement for browsers.

[Bug 23074] New: Listing members of a large category repeatedly broken

2010-04-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23074

Summary: Listing members of a large category repeatedly broken
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.16-svn
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: Categories
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: gsv...@gmail.com

I run a tool (http://svick.aspweb.cz/CatWatch.aspx) that watches additions and
removals of pages to categories. It seems that every few days, several hundred
members of are removed from
the listing of the category and later again readded, while nothing changes on
the actual member pages or the template used.

Most recent incidents:
3.4.2010 21:36 1314 pages were removed
4.4.2010 10:22 1314 pages were added
6.4.2010 22:16 821 pages were removed

Currently, for example Talk:American Economic Review isn't listed in the
category, but the page itself shows that it is member of the category. The page
itself hasn't changed for several months.

The default width of a MediaTransformError seems to be 180px, but in a gallery
that is too wide. The better question might be, why is this in a table in the
first place, and not simply in the thumb frame...

It seems the smallest possible thumbs with this error are 180 atm. I'm not sure
if we want to keep that, because it looks rather ugly

[Bug 23076] New: Login CSRF

2010-04-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23076

 Summary: Login CSRF
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.15.2
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: User login
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: tstarl...@wikimedia.org

MediaWiki 1.15.2 and earlier is vulnerable to a cross-site request forgery
(CSRF) vulnerability in both its HTML login interface and its API login
interface.

Login CSRF is a particularly problematic kind of CSRF when it is combined with
user scripting. An attacker can create an account with a user-specific script,
then force another user (the victim) to log in to that account. The prepared
user script then takes control of the victim's browser. It can display a login
form, apparently on the same domain, which captures the username and password
of the victim when they submit the form.

See section 3 of this paper for more discussion of login CSRF:

http://www.adambarth.com/papers/2008/barth-jackson-mitchell-b.pdf

To counter this, MediaWiki 1.15.3 will apply the standard defence for CSRF,
that is to ask for a secret token before it allows a login. In the HTML
interface (Special:UserLogin), the token is provided via a hidden form field
called wpLoginToken, which the browser will automatically submit.

In the API, the login process becomes:

1. Submit a request with lgname and lgpassword, in the same way as you did for
MediaWiki 1.15.2 and earlier. Save the cookies in the response.

 * An old unpatched server will respond with a response like {login:
{result: Success, ... }, assuming JSON format. If this occurs, you are
logged in and can stop.

 * A patched 1.15.3 server will respond with {login: {result:
NeedToken, token: ...}. Save the token from this response and proceed to
step 2.

2. Submit a request with the cookies from step 1, and additionally submit the
parameter lgtoken, with the value from the token in step 1.

 * If the session cookie was not submitted correctly, or if the server-side
session expired, the server may respond with {login: {result:
WrongToken}}. You can report this as an error to the user, or retry after a
few seconds.

 * If everything was OK, the response will be {login: {result:
Success, ... } as in MediaWiki 1.15.2.

Proposed changes to MediaTransformError

This patch changes the minimum size of a MediaTransformError to 120px, which
makes sure it will at least fit galleries. Any smaller and likely it would
become unreadable, so keep the ugly in those cases.

The patch also changes the message from a table to a div, because there is no
real need to use a table here. I have added display:inline-block to the css
to make it behave almost exactly as an img or table element would (This might
be important for , where no other framing is provided.)

I have no strong opinion on the usage of inline-block, I'll leave it up for
debate.

[Bug 23063] Large GIF animations create errors

2010-04-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23063

--- Comment #13 from Derk-Jan Hartman hart...@videolan.org 2010-04-07
02:32:33 CEST ---
Additional info from personal inspection of the code. The particular error is
generated by the thumb transform failing on normaliseParams() it does this in
BitmapHandler, defined in includes/media/Bitmap.php

This function matches wgMaxImageArea (12 million pixels) against
getImageArea(). For GIFs getImageArea() (from includes/media/GIF.php) is a
multiplication with the amount of frames. So as far as I can tell, everything
is behaving now as designed and intended.

So this bug can focus on someone developing a better method to deal with large
GIF images.

Please allow MediaWiki to continue scaling GIF images. MediaWiki seems to be
taking a long time to finish up creating animated GIF thumbnails. This is seen
by the experiences some have had with individual animated GIFs that have had
their image pages purged. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29#Category:Animations_of_geometry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Werdna#Non-megapixel_animation_doesn.27t_display_as_animated_thumbnail

If there are a few animated GIFs that can't be thumbnailed, it is better that
GIF scaling be kept turned on. People can upload resized animated GIFs for the
animated GIFs that are causing problems.

This is better than turning off GIF scaling for all static and animated GIFs.
Static GIF scaling is working fine. Also, MediaWiki resizing creates sharper
static GIF thumbnails than browser resizing of static GIFs.

And turning off MediaWiki scaling of animated GIFs puts a big load on dialup
users viewing pages with animated GIFs. Many animated GIFs use hundreds of
thousands, or millions, of kilobytes.

[Bug 23063] Large GIF animations create errors

2010-04-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #15 from zlight...@yahoo.com 2010-04-07 02:04:38 UTC ---
Derk-Jan Hartman. So the number of frames times the bytes per frame equals the
total bytes.

I have noticed that many thumbnails of animated GIFs use more bytes than the
full-size animated GIFs that use hundreds of thousands, or millions, of bytes.

Maybe, at least for GIFs that get error messages, MediaWiki could use only
every other frame, or every third frame, when scaling. This ways thumbnails
will use less bytes than the full-size GIFs. Thumbnails can never be as good as
the full-size images anyway. People can click the thumbnail image to get to the
larger, more detailed GIF.
