[Bug 23031] messages become read only after clicking Mark as read
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23031 --- Comment #2 from Amir E. Aharoni amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il 2010-04-06 18:21:26 UTC --- If this behavior is intended, it is rather disappointing. If i understood correctly, one of the design ideas of LiquidThreads was to keep the good things in MediaWiki's talk pages. Currently, if my user talk page on MediaWiki changes, i get the orange banner saying that i have new messages. Then it is enough to open my user talk page to make the notification go away - one click only. This is not perfect, because if i received several messages, i may miss them. But if i received only one message, which is a very frequent scenario, having to click once more is quite annoying. A good middle ground is to have it behave like Google Reader - if the unread message is scrolled into the viewable part of the browser, it should become read. I should also mention that for many years all email clients marked the email as read immediately after the user viewed it or a few seconds later. I understand that it may take time to implement it, but you should at least leave it as an enhancement. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

Large animated gifs all create the error: Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters or PNG file with more than 12.5 million pixels We should really have a better method to deal with this, at least a more descriptive error. Preferably we should thumb the first frame, render a play icon on top and always load the full GIF in the image description page, or something like that. One of the problems is that GIFs with large numbers of frames require very large amounts of memory to thumbnail under the current process. For example this simple 400 KB image with 370 frames: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/Translational_motion.gif Requires 85 MB to thumbnail. For items like that, where the full file size is actually very small, we should probably just send the whole image to the browser and let the browser handle it as is. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. For instance, an animation on en.Wikipedia “Thermodynamic temperature” self-ran since it was first put there. The animation here on NURBS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-uniform_rational_B-spline …ran fine until only hours ago. They ran fine because they were served unscaled however large or small they were. Now they are being scaled, and so some of them are causing problems. Well, problems more noticeable than filesize and image quality. (In reply to comment #3) I note that Derk wrote “Preferably we should thumb the first frame, render a play icon on top and always load the full GIF in the image description page, or something like that.” Am I reading correctly that a change to the way self-running animations play when one goes to a page containing them is being contemplated here? We're considering options for how to handle the instance where a file is large enough that scaling it will consume a dangerous amount of memory. Currently we just show a useless error; options suggested have included show a more helpful error; serving a static image which links to the full file at full file*size*; and serving the whole file unscaled and letting the browser hack at it. Whichever method is chosen, the scaling limit should be checked at upload so that these issues are not encountered in new files. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. Quoting Robert: “For items like that, where the full file size is actually very small, we should probably just send the whole image to the browser and let the browser handle it as is.” Indeed. Let’s look at that. If Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari—which has a bug of its own with Wikipedia’s animated GIFS (I’ve alerted Apple about it)—can scale a 398 KB GIF, let the browser handle it. That’s just my 2¢ as a non-developer. I might also openly wonder just how many animated GIFs there are that fall in this category. If the thumbnailing only requires a couple of gigabytes ($100) of server space, is it worth the fuss? Is there a compelling reason to not restore the previous functioning until a wall-to-wall technical solution is identified and implemented in one fell-swoop? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23063 --- Comment #9 from Happy-melon happy-me...@live.com 2010-04-06 21:02:24 UTC --- (In reply to comment #7) Derk, is that supposed to be a permanent fix? No; it's a temporary implementation of the proposed solution; which will presumably be replaced by a server-side implementation. I might also openly wonder just how many animated GIFs there are that fall in this category. If the thumbnailing only requires a couple of gigabytes ($100) of server space, is it worth the fuss? The process consumes large amounts of RAM, not disk space. There would be precious little point in a rescaling process which produced an output file two hundred times the size of the input. Allowing a process to exist which is known to consume measurable quantities of a resource is a DoS vector: saving a page which requests the image above in every size between 1 and 5000px would not exceed the maximum page size, but could easily send an image scaler into swap trying to produce all the necessary thumbnails. Is there a compelling reason to not restore the previous functioning until a wall-to-wall technical solution is identified and implemented in one fell-swoop? 200 animated gifs between 20kb and 10MB (think category page) is not something you want to throw at a browser. That. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23063 --- Comment #10 from Greg L greg_l_at_wikipe...@comcast.net 2010-04-06 21:15:54 UTC --- I would only make the point that category pages tend to be venues that registered Wikipedians visit—not so much our regular I.P. editors, who constitute some 99.95% of our readership and who are really supposed to be the ones we are creating content for. Mindful of that point, I suggest turning off any outrageously large category pages so that animated GIFs will auto-play without a “Play” button. Category pages can then be re-enabled after a wall-to-wall solution can be implemented that doesn’t pile up the RAM requirement for browsers. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 23076] New: Login CSRF
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23076 Summary: Login CSRF Product: MediaWiki Version: 1.15.2 Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: User login AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: tstarl...@wikimedia.org MediaWiki 1.15.2 and earlier is vulnerable to a cross-site request forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in both its HTML login interface and its API login interface. Login CSRF is a particularly problematic kind of CSRF when it is combined with user scripting. An attacker can create an account with a user-specific script, then force another user (the victim) to log in to that account. The prepared user script then takes control of the victim's browser. It can display a login form, apparently on the same domain, which captures the username and password of the victim when they submit the form. See section 3 of this paper for more discussion of login CSRF: http://www.adambarth.com/papers/2008/barth-jackson-mitchell-b.pdf To counter this, MediaWiki 1.15.3 will apply the standard defence for CSRF, that is to ask for a secret token before it allows a login. In the HTML interface (Special:UserLogin), the token is provided via a hidden form field called wpLoginToken, which the browser will automatically submit. In the API, the login process becomes: 1. Submit a request with lgname and lgpassword, in the same way as you did for MediaWiki 1.15.2 and earlier. Save the cookies in the response. * An old unpatched server will respond with a response like {login: {result: Success, ... }, assuming JSON format. If this occurs, you are logged in and can stop. * A patched 1.15.3 server will respond with {login: {result: NeedToken, token: ...}. Save the token from this response and proceed to step 2. 2. Submit a request with the cookies from step 1, and additionally submit the parameter lgtoken, with the value from the token in step 1. * If the session cookie was not submitted correctly, or if the server-side session expired, the server may respond with {login: {result: WrongToken}}. You can report this as an error to the user, or retry after a few seconds. * If everything was OK, the response will be {login: {result: Success, ... } as in MediaWiki 1.15.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. Any smaller and likely it would become unreadable, so keep the ugly in those cases. The patch also changes the message from a table to a div, because there is no real need to use a table here. The particular error is generated by the thumb transform failing on normaliseParams() it does this in BitmapHandler, defined in includes/media/Bitmap.php This function matches wgMaxImageArea (12 million pixels) against getImageArea(). For GIFs getImageArea() (from includes/media/GIF.php) is a multiplication with the amount of frames. So as far as I can tell, everything is behaving now as designed and intended. MediaWiki seems to be taking a long time to finish up creating animated GIF thumbnails. This is seen by the experiences some have had with individual animated GIFs that have had their image pages purged. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28technical%29#Category:Animations_of_geometry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Werdna#Non-megapixel_animation_doesn.27t_display_as_animated_thumbnail If there are a few animated GIFs that can't be thumbnailed, it is better that GIF scaling be kept turned on. People can upload resized animated GIFs for the animated GIFs that are causing problems. This is better than turning off GIF scaling for all static and animated GIFs. Static GIF scaling is working fine. Also, MediaWiki resizing creates sharper static GIF thumbnails than browser resizing of static GIFs. And turning off MediaWiki scaling of animated GIFs puts a big load on dialup users viewing pages with animated GIFs. Many animated GIFs use hundreds of thousands, or millions, of kilobytes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 23063] Large GIF animations create errors
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23063 --- Comment #15 from zlight...@yahoo.com 2010-04-07 02:04:38 UTC --- Derk-Jan Hartman. So the number of frames times the bytes per frame equals the total bytes. I have noticed that many thumbnails of animated GIFs use more bytes than the full-size animated GIFs that use hundreds of thousands, or millions, of bytes. Maybe, at least for GIFs that get error messages, MediaWiki could use only every other frame, or every third frame, when scaling. This ways thumbnails will use less bytes than the full-size GIFs. Thumbnails can never be as good as the full-size images anyway. People can click the thumbnail image to get to the larger, more detailed GIF. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
