The HTML 5 spec draft that includes the pagehide event also explicitly says it's uncancelable. Also, the documentation you link to says hooking the unload event breaks caching, but we only use the *before*unload event, which isn't mentioned. In fact, page caching seems to work fine for me: on a regular edit page, the content of the textarea is restored after clicking OK in the edit warning and going back. If wikEd has issues with this despite all that, it should probably disable EditWarning. Just thought I'd explain this for others to read:
The Vector extension / Vector preferences, in contrary to other extensions and
preferences, dont have an effect the enable/disable state directly.
Instead it echo'es something like the following on the page:

And somewhere after this the actual extension is loaded via javascript and when
it initialises it checks these variables.
Because of this it is possible to override the above by putting something in
the local user-custom vector.js file because it is loaded in the head-section.
However, functions like onloadHook and importScriptURI() aren't excecuted
untill after the page has finished loading (and the extention is initialized) -
so toggling some variable switches isn't having any effect anymore then.

PNG-8 has transparency support in IE6, but PNG-24 images require a CSS or JS hack. There is supposed to be a hack for this at http://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/IEFixes.js but it doesn't seem to be working.
