[Bug 24639] New: Special:Allmessages message grouping

2010-08-02 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24639

 Summary: Special:Allmessages message grouping
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Special pages
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ft2.w...@gmail.com

Special:Allmessages has grown huge, with thousands of messages. Searching for a
specific interface message is extremely difficult because the canonical
structure of these is weak (some functions have messages starting with multiple
"roots") and because there is no "tree structure" to aid searching.

PROPOSAL:

Can we have a modification to the message structure that messages created by
(or related to) a component or extension, are created "tagged" with that
component, similar to how there is a list of components and extensions in MW's
bugzilla itself.

The aim would be that interface messages would be able to be listed within
groups (related to component or extension) to speed up searching. This would
not mean a redesign of the interface system.

The suggested method would be that extensions that create or define interface
messages also include a group name variable. As interface messages are defined,
the current group name is added to their entry. So instead of having to modify
the definitions of thousands of entries, it needs the group name defined at one
point and the same name is used for all definitions thereafter until amended.
Message in code portions that doesn't use this would have a good "failsafe" -
their messages would be grouped in a group with a null/empty name, which is the
ideal behavior anyway and mirrors the present behavior. The other change would
be that Special:Allmessages then sorts messages by group name as an aid to user
searching.

 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal

AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: haikar...@gmail.com

As in Wikipedia, Esperanto Wikimedia projects need to change
namespace 2 (User:) to a more generic "Uzanto:" instead of the specific
"Vikipediisto:" (Wikipedian): This problem influences also non-Wikipedia
project, using MediaWiki: for example, in ScoutWiki (http://eo.scoutwiki.org),
namespace 2 is named "Vikipediisto", that's not correct. So, we'd like to
change the namespace as following:
* "Vikifontaristo" in Wikisource should redirect to "Uzanto";
* "Vikicitaristo" in Wikiquote should redirect to "Uzanto" (there is only
"Vikipediisto" and not "Uzanto" nor "Vikicitaristo");
* "Vikivortaristo" in Wiktionary should redirect to "Uzanto" (there is already
"Uzanto", "Vikipediisto" is a namespace redirect and "Vikivortaristo" doesn't
exist);
* "Vikilibristo" in Wikibooks should redirect to "Uzanto" (there is only
"Vikipediisto" and not "Uzanto" nor "Vikilibristo");
* "Vikiversitatisto" in Wikiversity should redirect to "Uzanto";
* "Vikinovaĵisto" in Wikinews should redirect to "Uzanto";
* Non-Wikimedia project should have "Vikipediisto" as redirect to "Uzanto"
(b/c);
We don't have neither Wikisource nor Wikiversity nor Wikinews, yet
(source is going to be opened)

The parser functions {{lcfirst: and {{ucfirst: do not work when the text they
operate on begins with a wikilink. This is the expected behaviour on a textual
level, as a wikilink begins with a [ character which is not a letter. However,
it is not the behaviour that would be expected on a wiki, since the more useful
behaviour in the majority of cases would be that it makes the first character
of the link text (not the link target) uppercase or lowercase. E.g.
should be replaced with Foo.

[Bug 24633] What is exactly needed for setting up a new language edition of WM project?

I don't think they need the language name (either in English or in the local
language). If the project is approved, then it must have the interface
translated, which would mean that it's already defined in Names.php.

[snip stuff that's definitely needed]

> * the name of the project talk namespace

It looks like from bug 14252 comment 7 that we don't actually need the project
talk namespace, if everything is properly defined in Messages*.php.

The bug isn't intended for developers, it's intended for WIkimedia system
administrators who create Wikimedia Foundation (now usually Rob with some help
from Roan, but traditionally Jens).

Another confirmed case of spamming through the wiki email interface... several
hundred emails sent at once, then rotating to a new IP and/or account. It'd be
nice to stop them from spamming our users by blacklisting the domain.

dumpHTML is not able to use many cores (at the same time) of my CPU and it
takes really really long (more than a week) to get millions of pages/files
generated... although my server is almost sleeping.

It would be good to have an option to specify how many cores we want to get
used to generate the HTML pages/files (independently of images
generation/resizing).

We are running a number of instances of mediawiki on PostgreSQL and are getting
a large amount of warning messages in the postgres log, which could easily be
fixed with a few simple changes to DatabasePostgres.php. The messages in
question are the following:

Message about escape string syntax:
=

It's not that it's a critical problem, but it would be nice to avoid filling up
our logs with 1-2GB of these kind of messages per month, in addition to it
being more correct.

[Bug 24628] Renaming of namespace-2 on MediaWiki for Esperanto and adding namespace redirect to ns:2

--- Comment #2 from haikar...@gmail.com 2010-08-02

Firstly, thank you!
Then:
1. Argh, I forgot to write it (thank you again :P): "Vikipediista diskuto",
"Vikifontarista diskuto", "Vikicitarista diskuto", "Vikivortarista diskuto",
"Vikilibrista diskuto", "Vikiversitatista diskuto", "Vikinovaĵista diskuto"
(logically in each project) should be redirect to "Uzanta diskuto".
2. I didn't check all them before:
 * In Wikipedia, there is only "Vikipediisto" and not "Uzanto"
 * In Wikiquote, there is only "Vikipediisto" and not "Uzanto" nor
"Vikicitaristo"
 * In Wikibooks, there is only "Vikipediisto" and not "Uzanto" nor
"Vikilibristo"
 * In Wiktionary, there is already "Uzanto", "Vikipediisto" is a namespace
redirect and "Vikivortaristo" doesn't exist.
 * We don't have neither Wikisource nor Wikiversity nor Wikinews, yet
(source is going to be opened)
I hope I wrote all needed information. If not, please tell me! :)
Thank you,
- Michael

I will change "Vikipediisto" -> "Uzanto" for MediaWiki core and keep an alias
for backwards compatability.

1. What should be the canonical name for 'Vikipediista_diskuto'?

2. "Vikifontaristo", "Vikicitaristo", "Vikilibristo", "Vikiversitatisto",
"Vikinovaĵisto" do not exist right now?

Hi you all, in Esperanto Wikipedia namespace number 2 (User:) is named
"Vikipediisto" (Wikipedian). This problem influences also non-Wikipedia
project, using MediaWiki: for example, in ScoutWiki (http://eo.scoutwiki.org),
namespace 2 is named "Vikipediisto", that's not correct.
So, we'd like to rename namespace 2 from "Vikipediisto" to "Uzanto" (User) but
keeping versions for every project:
* "Vikipediisto" in Wikipedia should redirect to "Uzanto",
* "Vikifontaristo" in Wikisource should redirect to "Uzanto",
* "Vikicitaristo" in Wikiquote should redirect to "Uzanto",
* "Vikivortaristo" in Wiktionary should redirect to "Uzanto",
* "Vikilibristo" in Wikibooks should redirect to "Uzanto",
* "Vikiversitatisto" in Wikiversity should redirect to "Uzanto",
* "Vikinovaĵisto" in Wikinews should redirect to "Uzanto",
Some project already uses "Uzanto" as namespace and some projects don't exist
yet.

I will reopen this bug once it will become actual again. I guess there is not a
deep consesnus needed, because the feature will be enabled by personal
preference only. Few users said already they will use this, which is enought in
my opinion. However, to proceed in line with current standards, I will make a
call for voting to a deeper consensus.
