The API's parse module needs an option to disable the PP report. Or just
disable it by default (though this might break things). If people just want to
parse text=, they don't need a report every time.

Example URL: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=parsetext=b

For OTRS we can have something like the following:

o...@wikipedia.org
o...@wiktionary.org

otrs.engl...@wikipedia.org
otrs.en.wikipedia.org

etc.

Its easy to remember the above mentioned email address and useful than
bookmarking a page like this: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/OTRS/Mailing_list

WMF already have email address like i...@wikimedia.org,
volunteers-o...@wikimedia.org, etc. More examples here:
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Contact_us

We should keep a standard system for email ids for all WMF projects.

[Bug 24574] Sort order in Special:ListUsers should be case-insensitive

--- Comment #4 from Gnu1742 gnu1...@arcor.de 2010-08-04 08:10:36 UTC ---
I doubt that the benefit is marginal: It would it make a lot lot more easier
for Oversights/Stewards to look for libelous/harassing Usernames to get rid of
them.

Could you please elaborate why this fixing requires 'disproportionate
resources'?
I do not know the actual implementation in mediawiki, but in every programming
language i recently worked in there are sort-algorithms which do not make a
difference between 'A' and 'a', so i guess there should be one for php.

Anyway: People don't expect this sorting order. They are used to other orders
from their phone-book or printed encyclopedias.

[Bug 24658] New: Easy access to a Page

2010-08-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary: Easy access to a Page
 Product: Wikimedia
 Version: unspecified

Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: sadik.kha...@gmail.com

Hi,

This bug is related to Search, Interwiki Link and General Enhancement.

We can get 'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple' page by typing 'Apple' in
search box of English Wikipedia.

If a Non-English user set his/her keyboard to other language like French,
Arabic, Malayalam, etc. and search something like Pomme, تفاح, ആപ്പിൾ, etc.
they will get 'There were no results matching the query.' and red link to the
text.

Basically this user is trying to get 'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple'. I
think we should have an *Automatic Redirect* from Interwiki text to the main
article.

This will solve another issue too.

Here is the URL for Malayalam Wikipedia Article Apple:
http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B4%86%E0%B4%AA%E0%B5%8D%E0%B4%AA%E0%B4%BF%E0%B5%BE
It is very difficult to use this URL in Email, Blog, Chat, IRC, etc. Many of
us will be happy if we can use 'http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple' instead of
the long URL.

At percent we are solving this issue by making a Redirect from its English name
and manually adding http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Prettyurl template in
thousands of Articles.

Thanks

FWIW, in r68230, i implemented a mode for the {|...|} syntax that would output
divs with table-* styles instead of a html table. This is just a prove of
concept, I don't think it will stay in the core, especially since it doesn't
work with older browesers, as pointed out in #2.

[Bug 24659] New: allow WAI ARAI attributes in wikitext

Allowing WAI ARIA markup in wikitext http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/aria would
make it easier to make content accessible to people using screen readers,
text-only browsers, etc. For example, this would make it possible to mark
tables that are used purely for layout (as on portal pages, warning boxes, etc)
as presentational (compare bug 24583).

Which display title did you try on which page? enwiki has
$wgRestrictDisplayTitle = true; set, which means you can only use display
titles that normalize to the actual title. So works on
IPod because iPod also links to IPod after normalization, and
should work on Wikipedia:Sandbox because
WiKiPeDiA:sandbox links to Wikipedia:Sandbox after normalization, but
or even will not
work on Wikipedia:Sandbox unless unrestricted display titles are enabled.

Portal, Portal talk, Book and Book talk are no default MediaWiki namespaces
and
cannot be translated on Translatewiki. They have to added to the local wiki
configuration. In what wiki do they exist?
Igbo Wikipedia (igwiki) doesn't have any of these namespaces, and there are no
other Igbo wikis.

Here the example in the translated message
(http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=MediaWiki:Mwe-upwiz-mins-secs-remaining/eooldid=2227403):

It needs to provade the plural case of left: if there is 1 minute or one
second, ifexpr will show restanta, if not restantaj, because minutes +
seconds = 1 means that or minutes=1 and seconds=0 or minutes=0 and seconds=1.
Did you understand?

[Bug 24661] New: show stable version of included pages if the page is unreviewed and stable version view is enabled

2010-08-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24661

Summary: show stable version of included pages if the page is
unreviewed and stable version view is enabled
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: FlaggedRevs
AssignedTo: jschulz_4...@msn.com
ReportedBy: bugrepor...@to.mabomuja.de
CC: innocentkil...@gmail.com

If you have a template with last version unreviewed the unreviewed version is
shown if you include this template on an unreviewed page or on an namespace
without flagged versions.

If stable version of a page should be shown according to user or default
preferences, the stable version of the template or image should be shown in
these cases instead.

Example: On http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReviewTest?stable=1 sighted
template version and not _un_sighted template version should be visable.

This should all be moot once we have jQuery on every page and people can
 just
 use $('.classname')

How is anyone supposed to know to do that without some documentation?
We could change getElementsByClassName() to wrap around $('.classname') somehow
and deprecate the former.

I do not know the actual implementation in mediawiki, but in every programming
language i recently worked in there are sort-algorithms which do not make a
difference between 'A' and 'a', so i guess there should be one for php.

Yes, you can sort case-insensitively in PHP just fine, but you can't
(efficiently) do so in MySQL. Like with the category thing, we'd have to add a
new column to hold the 'normalized' username and sort by that instead. For
English 'normalized' can just be all lowercase, but for other languages you'll
want to sort accented characters in all sorts of interesting ways.

Okay, this happens if any fields are set to hidden. All mandatory fields then
stop working.

See example at http://scratchpad.referata.com/wiki/Mandatory_Field_Test

Click the Add a Mandatory Test Item button. Then in the form press save without
filling in any of the fields. It momentarily flashes Cannot be blank next to
the Title field, but saves anyway.

Form is Form:Mandatory Field Test Form.

This is quite serious if you are using the automatic page naming functionality
of the form, as the fields used to create the page name can be left blank
resulting in dud page names. For example, with the above form you end up with
an article called ,

Regexp searches can't be done 'internally', as you might have guessed. It
doesn't exist as an external tool AFAIK, but it shouldn't be too hard to write
a toolserver tool that executes wildcard queries (SQL does allow those, they're
just kinda slow in most cases) on the database or uses a dump of all user names
to run regexes on.

I tried this again and cannot always reproduce. I guess appearing of the bug
depends on some factors like processing states when I pressing a key.

[Bug 24662] New: escaping whitespaces in style-attributes

2010-08-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24662

 Summary: escaping whitespaces in style-attributes
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: Page rendering
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: andbe...@web.de

Some browsers dont like it when there are unusual whitespaces in the
style-attribute of an HTML-tag (means: they cant display the CSS in the correct
way). This causes some template errors like
here. The template uses unnamed parameters in its style-attributes, and an
include whith one line per parameter causes that the line break can still be
found in the HTML source code.
You can solve the Problem by using ParserFunctions in the template like
style=background:{{#if:TRUE|{{{1|none};
but that is not as good as doing this by the parser also. This could be done by
an regularExpression like that:
replace(/[\s\n\r\t]+, ); //I'm not an expert
Also nbsp; and Co are not likely seen by some browsers.

[Bug 24636] lcfirst and ucfirst parser functions do not work on wikilinks

I agree (with Roan Kattouw) they are acting as described. The recommendation of
the bug report is to change that action. My opinion FWIW: Changing the action
of ucfirst/lcfirst will break current implementation, ruining backward
compatibility, and should not be done. However, it would be nice to have a
similar function that acts as requested in the bug report. Call it something
else and add it to the software (or an extension). It should not only replace
with Bar but also e.g.
with divh1a
href=http://example.com/;span id=fooBar/span/a/h1/div.

[Bug 164] Support collation by a certain locale (sorting order of characters)

2010-08-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164

--- Comment #205 from Philippe Verdy verd...@wanadoo.fr 2010-08-04 17:09:44
UTC ---
(In reply to comment #204)
If people want to put crazy stuff in sortkeys that changes based on who's
viewing it, we can't stop them. Curly braces are evaluated at an earlier
stage
than category links, so we can't make them behave differently based on whether
they're being used in a sortkey, I don't think. You could also put
CURRENTTIME in sortkeys, or any other silly thing like that.

That's because the Mediawiki parser still operates on the wrong level, and
performs text subtitutions always without ingoring the context of use. Not only
this is bad, but this is also very inefficient, because each processing level
is converting a fullpage to another fullpage that needs to be reparsed again at
the next level.

A much better scheme based on a true gramatical analyser using a finite state
automata would really help defining the state at which the parser (or its
ParserFunctions extensions) operate, without ever having to create huge
complete page buffers between each level (which uses costly appending
operations with many memory reallocations).

In other words, when you start parsing [[ you enter in a start-of-link
state, which then parses category: until it has found a colon, in which case
the whole prefix is case-folded and goes to the in-category state, then the
parser scans up to the next { or | or ]. It can then correctly process
all the text using such rules.

I have suggested since long that the MediaWiki syntax should be reformulated
using a LALR(1) formal syntax, from which a finite-state automata can be
automatically built to cover all the state information, and then ported to PHP
(Yacc, Bison or even better PCTCS could do that without difficulty). Then
instead of calling parsing functions that process all the text, then return the
converted text for processing to the next level, it will do that in a much
simpler (and faster) processing loop, calling much simple generation methods
and altering its state in a much cleaner and faster way (no more need to append
small lexical items to various buffers, the atoms will be pased from level to
level using a chained implementation.

This would also significantly speedup the expansion of templates, and would
allow the parser to make distintions when is encountered in the
context of a (which would have temporarily forced the UI
language to the CONTENTLANGUAGE, until the final ]] token is encountered that
would restore the UI language within the parser's internal state. this would
also have significant performance benefits (for example, no more need to
convert and expand all the parameters of or , only
convert them lazily when they are really needed for generating the effective
output.

Yes this comment is going too far out of the topic of this bug, it is
architectural. PHP has all the rools needed to support the construction of
tree-like data: instead of passing only strings to parser generation functions,
you would pass it an ordered array, whose elements are the parsed parameters,
themselves being either strings or subparsed arrays containing strings and
other arrays. The builtin functions would then request back to the MediaWiki
parser the evaluation/expansion of ONLY the parameters they need, and MediaWiki
would still be able to call the expansions of ONLY these parameters,
recursively. Most of the items in the wikicode would then be atomic and
processed lazily, only when they are effectively needed.

The crazy things like CURRENTTIME or or found
within and whose result depends on time or on user preferences
would be easily avoided. This would also simplify a lot the management of
whitespaces (if they need ot be trimmed and/or compressed depends on the
builtin expansion function called by the parser.

That's because the Mediawiki parser still operates on the wrong level, and

only
this is bad, but this is also very inefficient, because each processing level
is converting a fullpage to another fullpage that needs to be reparsed again
at
the next level.

People have tried to fix this before, and failed miserably. It is not
practical in the immediate future, if ever. Everyone likes to say how great it
would be to write a real parser, but nobody ever seems interested in
producing working code that actually replicates the current parser to a good
enough level to maintain acceptable backward compatibility. If you're
interested in that, please give it a try and get in touch with us when you have
a working implementation. Otherwise, it's not worth discussing pointlessly yet
again.

--- Comment #207 from Philippe Verdy verd...@wanadoo.fr 2010-08-04 17:41:52

In reply to comment #206)
Top-down analyzers are very easy to write, provided that you allow parsing to
be made via TWO generation points, instead of one: the first one converts and
accumulates the tokens in an array as long as it is not able to be processable
as a whole; this requiers a first parsing loop. Then the final step will ask
the expansion of parsed tokens lazily, in a basic processing loop which will
eat the tokens lazily, replacing them by their expansion, until there remains
only one token, a basic string that can be used as an expanded parameter.

I may try working on it, it's not so complicate to formulate, even without
using Yacc/bison/PCTCS, I have many ideas on how it will work : basically each
non-terminal token in the formal syntax becomes TWO functions, one is used when
parsing individual tokens, until the last one is reached, then a second
function will be used to expand itself, that will be used later (after
returning from the BY the caller, and ONLY when it will need the expansion in
its OWN expansion function.

For example the MediaWiki parser would become TWO functions: mediawiki_parse()
(which returns an array of tokens) and mediawiki_expand() which is stored as
the first token in the array. All ..._expand() functions would have two
parameters: one for the context in which they are to be evaluated (containing
for example time properties, cache properties, language properties ), and the
array itself to be expanded up to the end until they produce some simple text
The main concept is that tokens will expand lazily, but with full control by
the non-terminal parsed token which knows its context of expansion.

Basically the first step for each non-terminal token in the formal grammar is
performing a bottom-up conversion, from a top-down analysis (performed
recursively); this first step builds a AST tree (stored as a basic array of
children). The second step is performing a *conditional* top-down expansion of
the AST array into a flat text, ignoring nodes that don't need to be expanded
as their effective expansion will not be needed for the expansion of the
current AST node. Both steps are recursive, but in separate simple processing
loops.

OK this is still out of topic, but I don't know for now where to post these
concepts. I'll stop discussing this here.

[Bug 24665] New: edit api conflict on deleted and restored files.

2010-08-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24665

Summary: edit api conflict on deleted and restored files.
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.17-svn
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Normal
Component: API
AssignedTo: roan.katt...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: hart...@videolan.org
CC: bryan.tongm...@gmail.com, s...@reedyboy.net,
vasi...@gmail.com, soxre...@gmail.com

I experienced an issue trying to use edit api on this file:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Concert.jpg

This happened after I had deleted and then restored the page, see also the log
of that here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Concert.jpgaction=delete .
Whatever I tried, I couldn't make an edit to that page then. Every time I got:
{error:{code:pagedeleted, info:The page has been deleted since you
fetched its timestamp}}

I tried purging the page and my browser, tried waiting a while (2 hours) and
switching browsers, the problem would not go away. Perhaps the delete and
restore timestamps were too close, confusing editconflict detection, or
possibly, the api is looking at the last time of deletion and last time of
edit, not realising that an undeletion of the page is an event that can occur
after those two times.

I finally solved it by making an edit to the page with the normal interface.
After that, everything went like clock work.

people handle different aspects [Rob makes wikis, Cary makes lists] and it's
easier for tracking and usually makes people want to fix your bug if there's
not a bunch of different things involved that take different amounts of times.)

Spilt the mailing list part into Bug 24666 so it can be handled seperately.

Splitting this just to handle the mailing list part.

+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #24664 +++

Copying over my response from there...

and an appropriate mailing list.

So:

Right?

[Bug 24667] New: stacking context for #bodyContent

2010-08-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24667

 Summary: stacking context for #bodyContent
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
 URL: http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Re
daktion_Medizin/Projekt_Kinderleichtdiff=77448997old
id=77446302
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Vector Skin
AssignedTo: tpars...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: entli...@gmx-topmail.de

#bodyContent creates a positioning context via position ≠ static (r52855), but
not a stacking context because z-index is auto. This way, templates can easily
break the vectorMenu and other things in #mw-head by just using a z-index = 1
(see URL). #bodyContent { z-index: 0; } avoids that and should not have any
side-effects (it does nothing besides creating a stacking context; it's even
already the case in IE = 7 because IE = incorrectly treats auto like 0).

[Bug 24658] Search pages by interwikis

It is very difficult to use this URL in Email, Blog, Chat, IRC, etc. Many of
us will be happy if we can use 'http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple' instead of
the long URL.

Just as a note, many programs (not all) will accept
http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/ആപ്പിൾ just fine. Modern (using an extremely loose
definition of modern) browsers will convert that into the percent encoded form
when entered into the address bar.

As for the actual bug, I don't think this is feasible with the current
interwiki system, but ignoring that, I don't think its a good idea. Redirects
should be explicitly created. I would be very annoyed if page X started to
redirect to page Y because someone vandalized page z. (not to mention the
confusion that would cause). Also there are (I assume) some words which have
totally different meanings in different languages.

Thus i don't think automatic redirection would be a good idea even if it was
easy to do. However, it might be interesting to have the Did you mean thing in
the search page take interwikis into account. (I have no idea how feasible that
would be).

Cheers.

I don't think that 'eliminador' is an English word. We stay with English as
canonical names for user groups. As I am not a native English speaker I wonder
what name could be feasable.

After enabling this right I will add it to WikimediaMessages.i18n.php and the
new usergroup can be translated via Translatewiki.
