We haven't run the preferences conversion script, so there might still be some
old style preferences in the database. Could that affect it?
I think that might just be it. That'd be a bug in the preferences rewrite. Will
investigate.

[Bug 209] XHTML compliance (tracking)

2010-10-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209

--- Comment #13 from Aryeh Gregor simetrical+wikib...@gmail.com 2010-10-06
15:03:40 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #12)
It appeared so (before the wgHtml5 = false) but, this warning seems to negate
what the validator asserts. I found the warning just bellow.

DOCTYPE Override in effect!

The detected DOCTYPE Declaration !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0
Strict//EN http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd; has been
suppressed and the DOCTYPE for HTML5 inserted instead, but even if no errors
are shown below the document will not be Valid until you update it to reflect
this new DOCTYPE..

That's wrong. That text is correct for legacy HTML versions, which permit only
one doctype, but HTML5 permits several different doctypes. Probably that
validator text was written before HTML5 and never updated.

It seems the validator contradicts himself but, still, there's a warning;
there
shouldn't be one.

The warning is gone in 1.17, but it's only a warning, not an error. It serves
to alert you to a possible problem, not to say that there definitely is one.

Nice to read. When is 1.17.0 out? ;)

No planned release date.

Well, we are just Wikimedians. What is that security review about and why
SMWLight doesnt need such review?
It means the code needs to be looked at to make sure it doesn't have any
security vulnerabilities. SMWLight would also need one; the reason Markus
brought it up is that SMWLight is much less code, so it wouldn't take as long
to review.

Right now using the release notes generator is hardcoded at a range of 5000

Would be nice to increase this, especially since the commit rate has gone up
significantly and a release is much more than 5000 revs these days :)

Obvious dependency added.

Sorry, that's actually true (though I do wonder what happens if you have a

Thats an enwikipedia-only js hack, not a fix for the bug. (And to answer your
question, the redirect does not happen if you have a subpage named /skin.js (
resp .css)).

However with that said, you can do special:mypage/common.css (resp. js) as
user:Myname/common.css (resp. .js) is loaded for all skins (as of 1.17), which
in my mind is a fix to this bug.

*** Bug 25428 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

Em, so I guess the discussion above together with the bug title have just got
slightly off-the-date as bug 25428 didn't concern autoconfirm group only. It
was more about allowing FlaggedRevs not to reinvent the autopromote wheel
(bug 24948). Editor group in FlaggedRevs must be possible to be managed
manually and the current core autopromotion system is lacking this
functionality. Each system implements a bunch of features the other doesn't.
The features of $wgFlaggedRevsAutopromote should be merged into $wgAutopromote,
and the former should be dropped. (from aforementioned bug 24948)

---
I just posted to the mediawiki-api list about this:
http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/mediawiki-api/2010-October/001963.html

Skipping the intro:

In talking to Sam this morning about this, a couple things became clear:
1. This requires action=parse, which is already on the list of APIs
that generate healthy load
2. While this move should be net-neutral in CPU load, it does shift
the load from general purpose Apaches to the API servers, the latter
of which are more heavily loaded

Additionally, it's theoretically possible that this will actually
generate more load, since it'll be easier for people to skim the
history, unintentionally generating lots of (never completed) API
calls.

How big of a problem is this?

 Isn't this now resolved by the Special:Mypage/skin.css and
 Special:Mypage/skin.jss functionality?

 Sorry, that's actually true (though I do wonder what happens if you have a
 subpage called skin.css...)

It is not fix. It is just a workaround. And it actually doesn't solve the
requested thing. Reopening.

[Bug 25439] New: Make variable destinations in banners behave like html links

2010-10-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25439

 Summary: Make variable destinations in banners behave like html
links
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: CentralNotice
AssignedTo: ngau...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: tf...@wikimedia.org

Currently we the following js to selecr a variable destination page.

function goToDonationPage( mode ) {
var url =
'{banner-url-2010}?utm_medium=sitenoticeutm_campaign={campaign}utm_source={banner}';
if ( mode mode.length ) {
 url += '_' + mode;
}
var targets = String( '{targets}' ).split(',');
if ( targets.length ) {
 url += + targets[Math.floor( Math.random() * targets.length
)].replace(/^\s+|\s+$/, );
}
window.location = url;
}

While functionally this does what we want it creates a link that is a js
function making it not right clickable. If we could run the js on page load,
create a link, and then present that link to the user .. we would have a normal
html link with all the properties that people are used to.

[Bug 25439] Make variable destinations in banners behave like html links

--- Comment #1 from Nimish Gautam ngau...@wikimedia.org 2010-10-06 20:45:05
UTC ---
Do we use mode in the function? This fixes the issue:

code
var rewrite_url = function() {
var url =
'{banner-url-2010}?utm_medium=sitenoticeutm_campaign={campaign}utm_source={banner}';

var targets = String( '{targets' ).split(',');
if ( targets.length ) {
 url += + targets[Math.floor( Math.random() * targets.length
)].replace(/^\s+|\s+$/, );
}
$j(.fundraiser-banner a.variable_lp).attr(href,url);
}
$j(document).ready(rewrite_url);
/code

Also, in order to invoke this, the link needs to have the class varialbe_lp
appended to it, so it will look like this a
class=variable_lp{donate-text2}/a

[Bug 25418] Add comparators for greater than and less than

2010-10-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25418

--- Comment #2 from Jan Schoonderbeek bugzi...@saruman.biz 2010-10-06
20:59:57 UTC ---
While I understand your original motivation and your call for simplicity, I
disagree with the implications. Mentioning this use on the IRC channel gave me
3 out of 3 people (including active developers) who didn't know that actually
means ≤. Not a really statistically representative poll, but nevertheless...

If you strive for simplicity, then have really mean less than. As it stands
queries are harder to read because anything seemingly noted as less than X
actually includes X, or, in my case, less than X is actually the correct
notation for less than Y (or alternatively less than Xalso, not X).

However, if there are no strong objections to using characters ≤ and ≥, then I
believe we can agree that query reading is strongly improved while not making
it hard to accomplish the common case (which you suggest can still be
accomplished using and if applications really don't care about the
difference).

When following your reasoning I do see that the default setting should remain
old behaviour, which makes a case for something like $smwStrictComparator =
true to switch on the extra comparators AND switch equal or less to ≤.

To summarize:
Notwithstanding the forementioned, I still believe the current implementation
where writing Maturity::9 is actually not less than nine is confusing
and needs to be remedied. Please add comparators that are truly less than and
greater than, off by default, with an option to switch them on in
LocalSettings.php using a suitable boolean variable.

 [21:19:26] ^demon See, I consider Oracle semi-functional.
 [21:19:29] ^demon It mostly works.

My main interest is testing my code against those dbs that are considered
officially supported. So, if there is a list of these (which, I suppose would
depend on the release), then I will use it and stop testing against the
others.

I answered this (and I think other) questions in
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.science.linguistics.wikipedia.technical/49561
back in September. As far as I'm concerned, the ones worth testing and
maintaining right now are:

mySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Oracle.

Until DB2 and MSSQL finish their DatabaseBase subclasses and generally work
(I'm aware that Postgres and Oracle still fail on some edge cases, but their
completeness is far beyond the other two here), I don't see any need to test
them and even less need to include them in the installer and advertise their
use.

The one caveat is: while Oracle does have a working schema, DatabaseBase class
and (almost complete) new installer code, the maintainer hasn't been writing
patches to upgrade the database, so support is not complete and should NOT be
recommended outside of development environments.

DB2 and MSSQL have code in the old installer, which may or may not work. In
either case, it's not getting fixed at this point. The old installer is dead.

I'm having a related problem. I'm trying to use interwiki links on a private
wiki to make a request from a database table. The table name has a double
underscore in it like: INVENTORY__MATERIALS_METAL. The interwiki link looks
like: mydatabase:INVENTORY__MATERIALS_METAL but the interwiki input parser
removes the double underscore, so it breaks the link.

Passing a double underscore to a wiki site doesn't have any ill effects, so why
not just let the target site process the link itself?

As it is, the documentation (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Interwiki_table)
seems to be wrong, since it says iw_url is the target of the link; the page
name is substituted for $1... but in fact, $1 isn't directly substituted, as
it's modified by some parsing code.

If the input string were parsed directly, it wouldn't break the existing meant
for wikis purpose, but would at least be more predictable and perhaps more
useful for linking to other sites.

On a side note, interwikis are meant for wikis isn't documented; the manual
just says they're shorthand for long links. Further adding to the confusion is
the fact that a MediaWiki install comes by default with interwiki links to
sites like google.

Is there at least a way to disable the interwiki input string processor so I
can get the raw string into my link?
