The languages are listed by codes and native names. If a language is right-to-left, its code appears on the other end of the line, which is not nice (see the screenshot and notice the language 'he', Hebrew). The codes and the names should be aligned in two separate columns. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

Currently they appear right at the bottom. This makes them somewhat hard to read, because the eyes have to move too far away from the center of the screen. They also have to be moved up when the bottom toolbar with the play button appears. Putting them a few pixels above the bottom bar in the first place will solve this problem - the location is just fine and there will be no need to move them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l
[Bug 26721] New: Subtitle lines should be broken more evenly
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26721 Summary: Subtitle lines should be broken more evenly Product: mwEmbed Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: Timed text AssignedTo: d...@ucsc.edu ReportedBy: amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il Currently a subtitle line is broken when it is too long to fit in the video frame. This way, if the line has 12 words and only 10 fit in the frame, the top displayed line will have 10 and the bottom line will have 2. The subtitles should be broken more evenly, so that line lengths will be more or less equal. As much as possible, character count, word count and actual line length should be taken into account. This will make the subtitles much easier to read. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

[Bug 26716] "use external editor" preference causes problems when people who don't know what they're doing play with it
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26716 --- Comment #3 from jason brown 2011-01-14 04:18:04 UTC --- Thanks very much for the quick response. Answers following your points, in quotes, as follows. "Well it does say "for experts only". Basically what it does is you download a file, and you're supposed to have a program on your computer that takes that file and helps you edit it." Yup. But the "experts" bit gets a bit lost among the 21 or so other options on the page - and that's just for "editing" ! "For more info about what the option does, see http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:External_editors"; Cool. Just read this bit - "This is accomplished using a very simple system" - cue crazed non-techy laughter. "We could potentially add a comment in the file explaining what the deal with it is, and how to stop it from happening. (the downloaded file is an ini file, i think that format supports comments of some sort)" Just tried to open one of the said PHP files but got a "Windows cannot open this file:" error box. Maybe INI files are linked on computers owned by people with IT skills, but not most IITs - Idiot Information Technologists - like me. Short story: people can't read INI notes if their computer is not set to open it. "Do you have some sort of text that would be clearer for the option text is special:preferences." Yup, and your responses helped me figure out some ideas. I was just about to suggest an advanced options tab when I checked and there already is one! Okay, as a format layout guy, I would suggest making the words "advanced options" - currently in light grey - much bolder, bigger and in the colour RED. Too easy to miss as it is, especially when there are literally dozens of other options to go through. Even better, would be, eventually, a similar arrangement as the new text input box with an "advanced" link. So that idiots, like me, never get tempted to even look at such things, or at least have to make a conscious decision to access advanced features. For now, though, red lettering might cut back on the number of people clicking things they shouldn't. Again, thank you, Bawolff and hope this feedback is not a total pain. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26716 --- Comment #1 from jason brown 2011-01-14 03:23:24 UTC --- WP:VPT is hardly user friendly language for alerting new and old users to the place for bugs etc. Perhaps it's better that way (!) but I note that the Editor Trends Survey on Wikimedia shows a disturbing decline in edits over the years. If it takes a journo like me years to hunt down a simple deselect then how many other non-technical "bugs" like this one are holding back other users. Problem 2. Issue 3. Solution 4. Suggestion 1. PROBLEM: Clicking on edit button on any wiki page sees a PHP file download to user. 2. ISSUE: user trying to edit page, not download PHP file. 3. SOLUTION: Deselect options for following: "Use external editor by default (for experts only, needs special settings on your computer)" AND "Use external diff by default (for experts only, needs special settings on your computer)" I have been searching for the above solution for some time (years) and only came across the solution when the wikimedia server crashed today and was asked to report the error to webchat.freenode.net #wikipedia channel. Thanks to user Prodego for providing the solution, above. I asked Prodego if there was a way to find out how many users might have the same options selected and causing the same problem. She/he had only seen it five or six times previously; confirmed that it was possible to find out how many, but that it was unlikely to be answered in the IRC, before referring me to WP:VPT which in turn led me here. No one on the channel knew what the edit options were for. 4. SUGGESTION That the options above not be offered, if indeed there are a significant number of editors who, mistakenly or otherwise, have selected them. 4.1 Alternatively, that the options be explained in plain English - happy to help! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. Permissions are not cascading, so quickUserCan( 'createtalk' ) does NOT imply 'createtalk' && 'edit'. If someone is making use of quickUserCan() in their code, they should understand the permission model of MediaWiki, which is outlined here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:User_rights In order to create a new talkpage, both the 'edit' and 'createtalk' rights are required. There appears to be a problem with the Kaltura media player. I had this on an audio file at en.wikipedia.org earlier which I was trying to play, and the player kept stalling the file. I clicked the Menu button to the right, dropping down and trying to use the two cogwheel icon (Players) to switch to an alternative player. Clicking the icon however, bought up absolutely nothing, and I eventually had to resort to completely resetting my entire Wiki preferences in order to drop back to the default player for me, which is Cortado. Would it be possible please for the creator of this plugin to attempt to get the Player selection feature working, since in its present state, it's nigh on unusable. Not being able to play a file properly, and then not being able to switch to a player which *will* play the file properly is a bit of a nightmare. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26034 --- Comment #4 from Trevor Parscal 2011-01-13 23:25:43 UTC --- Whatever the chosen action is, despite what is entered in the URL, should be highlighted. The problem here is that we have logic somewhere saying "purge, ok, I can do that", then logic somewhere else saying "purge? never heard of that, you must mean read!" and yet more logic later on saying "what action are we using? I'm gonna highlight something..." What we need to do is ensure that whatever the interpretation of the action parameter ends up being is reflected in the UI. This is a dirty hack to help fake that, but it's not setting a dangerous precedence as far as the UI is concerned. Also, a purge tab is a bad design - purge is not a mode, it's an action - it should be an item in the drop down like protect or move. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

When viewing the article wgAction= view. When lookig at the history it's wgAction=history. When purging the cache the wgAction=purge. There's many different actions, some by extensions some by core. But I think going down the path of manually giving 1 action-tab multiple actions is not a good idea. See for example the following case: http://i.imgur.com/pWqEn.png Where there is a Purge-tab. [Bug 26714] New: Allow banner to run only in the languages we have translations for
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26714 Summary: Allow banner to run only in the languages we have translations for Product: MediaWiki extensions Version: any Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: enhancement Priority: Normal Component: CentralNotice AssignedTo: rkald...@wikimedia.org ReportedBy: b...@caseybrown.org CC: jalexan...@wikimedia.org It would be awesome if we could have some option that lets us only run the banner in the languages that we have translations for. This is better than either alternative: * running it in all languages, which gives English text for a lot of people, or * updating the language list every time we get a new translation, which gets really annoying and confusing when we have like 270 languages. Possible solutions: * adding an option in the language selection box that says something like "languages we have translations in", or * adding a clicky-selector (like All, None, Top 10) that automatically selects all the languages we have translations in. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug. ___ Wikibugs-l mailing list Wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikibugs-l

And since using tables for layouts is cool they probably used the following as a border for the 'white' table: {| style="background:black" | {| |content here | content here |} |} Result if we remove the background color: black text on black backround. Anyway, that's just a doom, but realistic, scenario. I don't think it's a big problem though as long as people are notified of it in advance and should be very clear as a breaking change. It's hard to imagine for some but many people depend on these styles of which most dont realize why the styles are that way nor how or where it's coming from. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. We need this for a WMF deployment, because we'd run load.php on bits and hence would have to hit something like http://bits.wikimedia.org/enwiki/load.php using $wgLoadPHPPathOrSomething = 'http://bits.wikimedia.org/enwiki'; A suitable default for this var would seem to be $wgScriptPath (technically by setting the var to null).
