[Bug 26723] New: RTL languages break the alignment in "Download text"

 Component: Timed text

Created attachment 7994

a screenshot showing reversed alignment for Hebrew

In the embedded player there's the ability to download the full video file and
the subtitles files by language. The languages are listed by codes and native
names. If a language is right-to-left, its code appears on the other end of the
line, which is not nice (see the screenshot and notice the language 'he',
Hebrew). The codes and the names should be aligned in two separate columns.

[Bug 26722] New: Subtitles should be displayed higher in the frame

 Component: Timed text

Currently the subtitles are displayed higher in the frame. Currently they
appear right at the bottom. This makes them somewhat hard to read, because the
eyes have to move too far away from the center of the screen. They also have to
be moved up when the bottom toolbar with the play button appears. Putting them
a few pixels above the bottom bar in the first place will solve this problem -
the location is just fine and there will be no need to move them.

[Bug 26721] New: Subtitle lines should be broken more evenly

Currently a subtitle line is broken when it is too long to fit in the video
frame. This way, if the line has 12 words and only 10 fit in the frame, the top
displayed line will have 10 and the bottom line will have 2.

The subtitles should be broken more evenly, so that line lengths will be more
or less equal. As much as possible, character count, word count and actual line
length should be taken into account. This will make the subtitles much easier
to read.

The default font for subtitles is too small to the point of being hard to read.
I tried it in several languages i know - English, Hebrew and Russian and it's
true for all of them. (I also tried Georgian, which i don't know, but i suppose
that it's true for that language, too.)

The font size should be about 1.5 times bigger.

[Bug 26716] "use external editor" preference causes problems when people who don't know what they're doing play with it

2011-01-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26716

Thanks very much for the quick response. Answers following your points, in
quotes, as follows.

"Well it does say "for experts only". Basically what it does is you download a
file, and you're supposed to have a program on your computer that takes that
file and helps you edit it."

Yup. But the "experts" bit gets a bit lost among the 21 or so other options on
the page - and that's just for "editing" !

"For more info about what the option does, see
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:External_editors";

Cool. Just read this bit - "This is accomplished using a very simple system" -
cue crazed non-techy laughter.

"We could potentially add a comment in the file explaining what the deal with
it
is, and how to stop it from happening. (the downloaded file is an ini file, i
think that format supports comments of some sort)"

Just tried to open one of the said PHP files but got a "Windows cannot open
this file:" error box. Maybe INI files are linked on computers owned by people
with IT skills, but not most IITs - Idiot Information Technologists - like me.
Short story: people can't read INI notes if their computer is not set to open
it.

"Do you have some sort of text that would be clearer for the option text is
special:preferences."

Yup, and your responses helped me figure out some ideas. I was just about to
suggest an advanced options tab when I checked and there already is one! Okay,
as a format layout guy, I would suggest making the words "advanced options" -
currently in light grey - much bolder, bigger and in the colour RED. Too easy
to miss as it is, especially when there are literally dozens of other options
to go through. Even better, would be, eventually, a similar arrangement as the
new text input box with an "advanced" link. So that idiots, like me, never get
tempted to even look at such things, or at least have to make a conscious
decision to access advanced features. For now, though, red lettering might cut
back on the number of people clicking things they shouldn't.

Again, thank you, Bawolff and hope this feedback is not a total pain.

WP:VPT is hardly user friendly language for alerting new and old users to the
place for bugs etc.

Perhaps it's better that way (!) but I note that the Editor Trends Survey on
Wikimedia shows a disturbing decline in edits over the years.

If it takes a journo like me years to hunt down a simple deselect then how many
other non-technical "bugs" like this one are holding back other users. Is
WP:VPT the right page to contribute to on simplifying the bug/error/problem
process? A wizard perhaps?

Not very techy, I know, but not many people are!

1. Problem
2. Issue
3. Solution
4. Suggestion

1. PROBLEM:
Clicking on edit button on any wiki page sees a PHP file download to user.

2. ISSUE:
user trying to edit page, not download PHP file.

3. SOLUTION:
Deselect options for following:

"Use external editor by default (for experts only, needs special settings on
your computer)"

AND

"Use external diff by default (for experts only, needs special settings on your
computer)"

I have been searching for the above solution for some time (years) and only
came across the solution when the wikimedia server crashed today and was asked
to report the error to webchat.freenode.net #wikipedia channel. Thanks to user
Prodego for providing the solution, above.

I asked Prodego if there was a way to find out how many users might have the
same options selected and causing the same problem. She/he had only seen it
five or six times previously; confirmed that it was possible to find out how
many, but that it was unlikely to be answered in the IRC, before referring me
to WP:VPT which in turn led me here. No one on the channel knew what the edit
options were for.

4. SUGGESTION
That the options above not be offered, if indeed there are a significant number
of editors who, mistakenly or otherwise, have selected them.

4.1 Alternatively, that the options be explained in plain English - happy to
help!

quickUserCan( $permission ) returns boolean based on what permission is checked
for. Permissions are not cascading, so quickUserCan( 'createtalk' ) does NOT
imply 'createtalk' && 'edit'.

If someone is making use of quickUserCan() in their code, they should
understand the permission model of MediaWiki, which is outlined here:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:User_rights

In order to create a new talkpage, both the 'edit' and 'createtalk' rights are
required. Sometimes you need more than one right to do an action.

I see no bug in MediaWiki.

Hi. There appears to be a problem with the Kaltura media player. I had this on
an audio file at en.wikipedia.org earlier which I was trying to play, and the
player kept stalling the file.

I clicked the Menu button to the right, dropping down and trying to use the two
cogwheel icon (Players) to switch to an alternative player. Clicking the icon
however, bought up absolutely nothing, and I eventually had to resort to
completely resetting my entire Wiki preferences in order to drop back to the
default player for me, which is Cortado.

Would it be possible please for the creator of this plugin to attempt to get
the Player selection feature working, since in its present state, it's nigh on
unusable. Not being able to play a file properly, and then not being able to
switch to a player which *will* play the file properly is a bit of a nightmare.

I tried this on Firefox 3.6.13 and Chromium.

This would fragment the cache even more. Imho something like this that
fragments the cache with little extra purpose should be isolated to an
extension.

[Bug 26034] Purge makes the read tab inactive

2011-01-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26034

--- Comment #4 from Trevor Parscal 2011-01-13 23:25:43
UTC ---
Whatever the chosen action is, despite what is entered in the URL, should be
highlighted. The problem here is that we have logic somewhere saying "purge,
ok, I can do that", then logic somewhere else saying "purge? never heard of
that, you must mean read!" and yet more logic later on saying "what action are
we using? I'm gonna highlight something..."

What we need to do is ensure that whatever the interpretation of the action
parameter ends up being is reflected in the UI. This is a dirty hack to help
fake that, but it's not setting a dangerous precedence as far as the UI is
concerned.

Also, a purge tab is a bad design - purge is not a mode, it's an action - it
should be an item in the drop down like protect or move.

The tabs are for actions.

When viewing the article wgAction= view. When lookig at the history it's
wgAction=history.
When purging the cache the wgAction=purge.

There's many different actions, some by extensions some by core. But I think
going down the path of manually giving 1 action-tab multiple actions is not a
good idea.

See for example the following case: http://i.imgur.com/pWqEn.png
Where there is a Purge-tab. If this makes it into a release you're looking at:

bug: Action=purge wrongly highlights the Read-tab.

[Bug 26714] New: Allow banner to run only in the languages we have translations for

2011-01-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26714

Summary: Allow banner to run only in the languages we have
translations for
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: CentralNotice
AssignedTo: rkald...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: b...@caseybrown.org
CC: jalexan...@wikimedia.org

It would be awesome if we could have some option that lets us only run the
banner in the languages that we have translations for. This is better than
either alternative:

* running it in all languages, which gives English text for a lot of people, or

* updating the language list every time we get a new translation, which gets
really annoying and confusing when we have like 270 languages.

Possible solutions:
* adding an option in the language selection box that says something like
"languages we have translations in", or
* adding a clicky-selector (like All, None, Top 10) that automatically selects
all the languages we have translations in.

I should have added one thing. This patch worked for MW 1.16. When I tried to
change the signature on a MW 1.13.2 system, it didn't. Rendering completely
hung. So, this fix should only apply to MW 1.16 systems.

--- Comment #1 from Krinkle 2011-01-13 21:35:33 UTC ---
removing the white background color of a simple and wide selector like 'table'
will most certainly break layouts for many users that depend on the fact that
when they started their fancy main page with

{|

|}

it would be white. And since using tables for layouts is cool they probably
used the following as a border for the 'white' table:

{| style="background:black"
|
{|
 |content here | content here
|}
|}

Result if we remove the background color: black text on black backround.

Anyway, that's just a doom, but realistic, scenario. I don't think it's a big
problem though as long as people are notified of it in advance and should be
very clear as a breaking change. It's hard to imagine for some but many people
depend on these styles of which most dont realize why the styles are that way
nor how or where it's coming from.

Summary: Wikihiero not rendering with PHP 5.3.4
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: WikiHiero
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: dness...@yahoo.com

Created attachment 7989
  --> https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=7989
FIxes third parameter mis-match with parser call

I updated my PHP version from 5.2.4 to 5.3.4. As a result wikihiero no longer
renders properly. I turned on PHP display_errors and the following warning
appeared:

Warning: Parameter 3 to WikiHieroLoader() expected to be a reference, value
given in /czdata/cz/phase3/includes/parser/Parser.php on line 3287 Call Stack:
0.0003 664008

This was followed by a stack trace.

I modified the signature of WikiHieroLoader() in wikihiero.php (see attached
patch), which eliminated the warning and restored hieroglyphs rendering.

I have attached a patch.

[Bug 26712] New: Branch MediaWiki docs

2011-01-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26712

   Summary: Branch MediaWiki docs
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Subversion
AssignedTo: innocentkil...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: innocentkil...@gmail.com
CC: innocentkil...@gmail.com, rlan...@gmail.com

Right now we build MediaWiki doxygen docs at svn.wikimedia.org/doc/. This is
built from trunk automatically via a cron.

It would be nice to have a stable version of the docs for the branches as well.
If someone is writing an extension for 1.17, the trunk docs may be inaccurate
if methods changed or were deprecated.

Something like svn.wikimedia.org/doc/1.17/, /doc/1.16/ etc would be nice.
Move trunk docs to /doc/trunk/
Make /doc/ a landing page.

[Bug 26708] New: remove table { background-color: white } in Vector and Monobook

Vector and Monobook contains

table {
/* we don't want the bottom borders of s to be visible through

Bug 26449 added
 h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 { overflow: hidden }
to all skins. So the bottom border of h2 can not go through floating tables.
table { background-color: white; } is no longer necessary.

a lot of more specific
 table { background-color: transparent; }
can be removed.

Some more examples of long words in an overflow:hidden container and in
particular floating objects are here:

vector, monobook have
/* Tables */
table {
/* we don't want the bottom borders of s to be visible through

background-color: white;
}

I think by h2 { overflow:hidden } this is no longer necessary.

php-pear-Auth-OpenID-2.1.1-8.fc12.noarch <- replaced with source from 2.2.2
since the package is broken by default

I had to fix the packages slightly (they ship 2.1.1 which is incompatible with
PHP 5.3 and some directory references in the requires() were broken). I have
confirmed that OpenID on this installation works with Google, Wordpress,
Appspot and Blogspot (successful user signup/account mapping/etc.).

So the next step is probably to find out why tidy messes up the page this

[Bug 26707] New: Make URL path to load.php configurable

Summary: Make URL path to load.php configurable

  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Resource Loader
AssignedTo: tpars...@wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: roan.katt...@gmail.com
CC: roan.katt...@gmail.com

Optionally, it should be possible to configure MW to use a different (absolute)
URL path to load.php .

We need this for a WMF deployment, because we'd run load.php on bits and hence
would have to hit something like http://bits.wikimedia.org/enwiki/load.php
using $wgLoadPHPPathOrSomething = 'http://bits.wikimedia.org/enwiki';

A suitable default for this var would seem to be $wgScriptPath (technically by
setting the var to null). Also, $wgScriptExtension should still be honored.

Screenshot of Step 2/3, after cleaning up the cookies

Hi!

Sometimes I'm experiencing trouble when trying to login on Wikimedia projects
(pt.wikibooks, en.wikipedia, at least).

Steps:
1. I'm logged out.
2. I click on [[Special:Watchlist]] and get the "Not logged in" message. Ok.
3. I clear the cookies in Google Chrome (8.0.552.200 beta)
4. I log in and get the "Login sucessful" message. Ok.
5. I click on [[Special:Watchlist]] and get the "Not logged in" message again!
(although now there are some cookies)

I've tried to shift + reload the browser, it but it doesn't help.

The problem also happens on Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US;
rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101206 Ubuntu/10.10 (maverick) Firefox/3.6.13).

I just noticed It was also reported on English Wikipedia Village pump:

LQT does not prevent double posting of replies. Should be basic stuff to
prevent those.

Simple mostly done in r80163. Still requires porting of the highlightbroken
user option, probably in the same style as done in r80034

In theory you can test it here:

But the prototype seems out of date and broken atm.

Thanks a lot.

Is it possible to test these fixes in some full-fledged RTL wiki?

I tried some of those settings related to the parser but didn't have any luck.
Try disabling tidy to see if that's causing the issue. I tried using the same
setting but I'm not sure if I actually have tidy configured on my server.
