[Bug 26679] Edit box text appears to jump back and forth whilst typing

2011-01-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26679

--- Comment #7 from Brion Vibber 2011-01-22 07:50:29 UTC ---
In a couple minutes poking around at User talk:BarkingFish in Firefox on a
Mandriva 10.02 live CD, I wasn't able to reproduce the jumping behavior. I
tried anon editing (default Vector skin & enhanced editing toolbar), and logged
in as myself switched over to Monobook skin & old-style edit toolbar to match
the sample video.

I do recall vaguely that textareas scrolling unexpectedly to the top is a thing
that happens; I think there are workarounds in some of the edit toolbar code
for instance, as changing the text contents can do this in some versions of
some browsers.

However, when just typing in with the regular classic editor, that shouldn't be
happening...

Thor, do you still see the problems if you edit without logging in, or on a
freshly created account? Do you have any gadgets enabled? Browser extension
issues are unlikely if you're seeing this on several different browsers on the
same machine; but something specific to your wiki accounts might be. Could be
something that's triggering something as a side effect...

Thanks! It works when I disable MWSuggest.

It should probably be documented somewhere that SimpleSearch and MWSuggest are
incompatible. Particularly as it worked in earlier versions, so people doing
upgrades should somehow be notified.

You should also probably note somewhere to set

$wgEnableMWSuggest = false;

before deploying the new MediaWiki code to Wikipedia.

It should be possible to catch this gracefully, in theory at least.

All searches go through "Special:Search", even searches using the "Go" button.
In Monobook, this was done using a &go=Go parameter, e.g.
.
Vector seems to do this a little bit differently (omitting the &go=Go
parameter), but the general idea is still the same.

"#" is an illegal character in MediaWiki page titles. "|" is also an illegal
character in MediaWiki page titles, but it can be caught gracefully. Other
sites, such as Google, can gracefully catch "#", e.g.
.

I don't know of any technical reason "#" can't be caught gracefully when it's
input into the search field directly. It may require special-casing in
includes/specials/SpecialSearch.php, but there isn't anything impossibile here
(that I'm aware of) that requires a "wontfix" resolution.

Re-opening this for now.

It could take you to "Number sign" in the same way that @ takes you to "At
sign" but AFAICT, "Go" simply puts the text in the URL. Thus, @ takes you to
"At sign" because @ redirects there. Given that the # in the URL is,
essentially, invisible to MW, I'm not sure there is much to do about it.

Oh my follow the link and guess what? It is being used and it is being actively
updated. Who'da thunk it! Sheesh, a little check would have been worthwhile
rather than the derisory "Use".

As we have someone actively placing sexually orientated images on user pages
surely you are not suggesting that we have to go and proactively check and grab
hundreds or thousands of the image names and then load them into that file.
Should I stay awake late at night and wait for all to be in bed for my
research? Or maybe I should sit and the kitchen table and do that research in
front of the whole family. Brilliant idea! Or not.

There should be no downside like this from a common image server and there
needs to be a REASONABLE and PRACTICAL means to filter out that sort of abuse
of the system.

No ability for "Mediawiki:Bad_image_category"? No ability to import all the
filenames of files listed in categories? Something that could be updated by a
bot on a regular basis?

[Bug 26639] Headings appear twice, instead of edit section links

2011-01-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26639

--- Comment #12 from Daniel Friesen
2011-01-22 05:24:09 UTC ---
"how" tidy is causing the issue is fairly obvious without even browsing the
code. It sounds like tidy is being run after we insert the editsection tokens,
but before we replace them with real editsection tokens. The editsection tokens
are made in the format ...
specifically because that's the only way to get the LanguageConverter to treat
the information in the exact way we want it to. However, unfortunately
editsection is not a real html tag, so when tidy sees it before we replace it
with editsection markup (which we want to let be customized) it decides to
strip out the tag part and leave nothing but the heading hint behind, which is
usually the same text as the header's text, leading to that text being
displayed twice instead of having a header and an editsection link.

Now the "solution" is less obvious. Perhaps I'll experiment and see if I can
use something like a mw: or mediawiki: xml/xhtml namespace and use something
like instead of which is in the default
xhtml/html namespace and trick tidy into leaving those tags alone.

Re-opening this. "Bad image list" doesn't support categories, which is what the
bug filer asked for. Individual images are a pain in the ass to try to list, so
category-based filtering makes more sense.

This request sounds similar to
. I'm not sure if
that subpage has an associated bug report. This could be that bug report. In
any case, the "bad image list" is a fairly bad hack. We can and should do
better.

or in the default install:

And both of these pages link to the desired search.

But the search button doesn't doesn't automatically search for the missing
name.

Still, the functionality is staring you in the face, I don't see a reason to
have the search use the referring page by default.

[Bug 26857] Fatal error during installation enabling 'Vector' extension

2011-01-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26857

--- Comment #6 from Brion Vibber 2011-01-22 03:55:32 UTC ---
Ok, so if the only thing we're going to take out of it is $wgHooks entries for
schema updates, then explicitly global'ing $wgHooks is probably ok for
functional purposes.

We still have the problem that the extension files expect to be loaded in a
different context than where we're loading them, and they can spew warning
messages or halt the program with a fatal error...

As mentioned in IRC, loading up DefaultSettings.php into local function context
first will likely get most or all extension files to load through cleanly. It's
still possible some could fail due to something else not being set, or setting
their hooks from an extension setup function which might not get called, or
trying to include other libraries early etc.

It may be wise to cook up some guidelines to ensure that extension files are
safe to load outside of global context, but doing all that stuff really right
might be ugly.

If they're creating / adding to a local variable called '$wgHooks' within

They would need access to the global $wgHooks and any other global variables
that those hooks need access to if/when they get run.

It's mainly for extensions to get a chance to tie into
$wgHooks['LoadExtensionSchemaUpdates'] at install-time and not only at upgrade
time (so new tables will be created and you don't have to re-run as an update
to get them)

[Bug 26857] Fatal error during installation enabling 'Vector' extension

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26857

--- Comment #2 from Brion Vibber 2011-01-22 02:16:01 UTC ---
The installer require()s extension files from within the
Installer::includeExtensions() method, so I think any reference to global
configuration variables directly in the extension file will fail.

Using a 'global' declaration before each global, or accessing them via
$GLOBALS, should resolve that, but I think most extensions that actually need
to be doing configuration setup at install time will be potentially affected.

In this case it's extra bogus because not having $wgResourceModules triggers a
fatal error with the array += operator; most cases are probably just spewing
E_NOTICE whinging about undefined variables.

Now, if the point of including the extensions at this time is to get hooks set
up so it'll do the database installation, I don't think this is going to work
-- any changes to the global arrays will get wiped out... so the updater hooks
won't be there?

If I'm not mistaken, this is the result of both the old-school 'mwsuggest' and
the newer vector simplesearch drop-downs being active at the same time.

(With Firefox 4b9 (Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64), I see them both but they show in the
same physical area on screen, so depending which one comes up first you might
not notice the second one.)

The site probably just needs to set:

$wgEnableMWSuggest = false;

Or is SimpleSearch supposed to degrade automatically to the internal mwsuggest?

[Bug 26857] New: Fatal error during installation enabling 'Vector' extension

2011-01-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26857

Summary: Fatal error during installation enabling 'Vector'
extension
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: wikimedia-deployment
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Installation
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: br...@pobox.com
CC: innocentkil...@gmail.com

MW trunk on r80737

Full extensions folder is checked out; using all default install options plus:
* Vector extension on
* image uploads on
* memcached on (localhost:11211)

Output in browser stopped at:

Install

Including extensions...

Error log shows:

PHP Notice: Undefined variable: wgResourceModules in
/var/www/trunk/extensions/Vector/Vector.php on line 109, referer:
http://stormcloud.local/trunk/config/index.php?page=Options

PHP Fatal error: Unsupported operand types in
/var/www/trunk/extensions/Vector/Vector.php on line 109, referer:
http://stormcloud.local/trunk/config/index.php?page=Options

Disabling memcache makes no difference; disabling image uploads *should* make
no difference, but didn't get a chance to try in total isolation. Disabling
both image uploads and Vector extension got me a functional install.

[Bug 26786] Add functionality (in an extension or MediaWiki) and implement to make English Wikipedia's [[Template:Cite]] work faster

2011-01-21 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26786

22:21:24 UTC ---
There are fairly substantial differences between {{cite}} and {{convert}}. The
latter is big and messy and expensive because it's doing something wikitext
wasn't designed for (numerical conversions and string manipulation). It's
immediately obvious how OOP, regular expressions, or even array structures and
intrinsic maths, can help improve both the readability and performance of that
code. I think I've largely finished refining [[Template:Convert]] and its
**three thousand** subtemplates into ~700 lines of PHP, of which 200 are data
constants. It doesn't even attempt to implement all the stupidly many features
of {{convert}}, but it does the heavy lifting and lets templates put the shiny
bells on, if desired, probably in a single moderately complicated wrapper
template.

The {{cite}} templates are a different kettle of fish altogether. They're
there to do what wikitext is *designed* to do: format plain text into pretty
patterns and output it in a consistent way. The reason the templates are so
cumbersome is that a) they try to cover every possible permutation of
parameters for every type of source in one enormous metatemplate, and b)
there's a huge amount of code that's included purely to keep various groups
from tearing each other's throats out over trivial stylistic differences. The
default solution when two groups have spent a year editwarring over the manual
of style over whether authors should be separated by a wiggly line or a
straight line, is to say "either style is acceptable, be consistent within an
article, and don't convert articles from one style to another without local
consensus". Hence a plethora of silly variations from one template to another
and even within uses of the same template, all of which need to be supported in
the metatemplate.

Moving this parsing logic from wikitext to PHP would aid in reducing that
redundancy and bloat, but not by much; there is a genuine need for quite a lot
of flexibility in citation layout, and we certainly can't be moving it into PHP
if it's only going to get code updates pushed once a year; unless and until
Wikimedia gets back onto a more vigorous scap schedule, it would be a recipe
for disaster to require code updates for any change to reference formatting.

I can see a way forward for citations which takes them out of wikitext and into
the software, but not as merely a string-processing widget. It would need to
be a comprehensive change to citation style, making them more semantic and
preferably out of wikitext altogether. Special pages to define field
structures with clear semantic meaning, and separately define 'citation styles'
which cherry-pick particular fields to be included in a given type of citation
(web, news, journal, etc). AJAX-y out-of-edit-window editing of citations, and
just a tiny XMLish tag , or more likely left in the
wikitext, that can easily be picked out by future WYSIWYG editors. Search
listings to identify and merge identical references, and identify broken links,
old accessdates, etc; and no doubt to allow our intrepid bot operators to run
various exciting maintenance tasks on the entire corpus of citations en masse.
That level of integration would be a proper justification for removing what is
fundamentally a text presentation issue, from the medium which wikis generally
use to present text -- wikitext -- and making it a software implementation.
But taking it out of the wikitext purely to improve performance, while keeping
the interface exactly the same, would actually be very difficult; writing a
{{#cite: ... }} parser function which was flexible, adaptible and still usable,
would be very challenging.

Would giving it the whole nine yards like that improve performance? Very
possibly. We could disable brace constructs in the input to citation fields,
and cache the final output indefinitely. It would probably measurably increase
database load and measurably decrease apache load, and would certainly need
careful deployment. But I don't really think there's much value to be gained
from half measures for this particular corner of wikitext.

install_version_checks() doesn't exist in trunk, so that's not possible.

I'm willing to bet you have a mix of old and new files.

config/index.php certainly does not call this old function.

I did a profile on my wiki to see why it's so slow and the AutoLoader.php is
being hit 50+ times and that's excluding extensions, the AutoLoader.php script
alone takes a total average of 530ms. Is that really necessary when viewing a
page? that seems inefficient to me but again, I don't know if every one of
those files are required to be loaded.
