In Special:Log/renameuser, it's difficult to determine whether a user was
renamed because it would usually require searching through WhatLinksHere and
looking for specific redirects from the User namespace that point to the
renamed user. If rather than just having "User:B" put into the page parameter
list logs of "User:B was renamed to User:C" we can also have the option of
viewing logs displaying "User:A was renamed to User:B" it'd be much easier.

The current tooltip on mouseover shows the name of the link, but there would be
many instances when a short description would be helpful as well, like a one
sentence summary of a linked article, so that the user doesn't have to go to
the linked article in order to understand what it is.

I envisage that the short description is written on the page being linked to
(the target), and when the link is created on the 'current' page (eg
alias a flag can indicate if the description should show in the
mouseover, eg alias|hoverdesc

We have JS for the edit summary box to limit it to 255 bytes (taking utf8 into
consideration). It shouldn't be that hard to adapt it to the textarea on move.
I'll try and look into doing that sometime in the nearish future (but if
someone wants to beat me to it, by all means).

As for the "textareas are ugly, I only want a one line input" part of this bug,
I think that is a wontfix.

By default (going back several versions. Not sure how far) MediaWiki enables RC
patrolling.

Up until r81544 (which was a couple days ago, so 1.18 which won't be released
for several months). If RC patrolling is enabled, no last-modified headers on
special:recentchanges.

OK http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2616#section-14.29 says you can use the

MediaWiki very much sends a Last-modified header by default.

2011-02-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27140

--- Comment #11 from Bawolff 2011-02-07 01:58:20 UTC ---
I'm going to regret responding but...

Last-modified header indicates that the content of the page has changed, or may
have changed. This change could be any type of change, from the trivial, to an
entire page change. Equating a change in special:recentchanges with an edit is
stupid and wrong. Installing an extension (as an example given above) that
could potentially change the format of RC (as some extensions like flaggedRevs
to pick a random example do) is a perfectly valid reason to update the
modification time. The last modified time is for caching use only. It should
not be displayed to the user at all. Any program that does is doing something
wrong.

>but on low use wikis, a
>daily false alarm on RecentChanges already will have the 'boy who cried wolf'
>effect for any patroler.

Clearly the solution is not to use such a broken program for checking if there
are any new edits. It is trivial with the api to actually check if there has
been any new edits to the wiki. Its not mediawiki's fault people are reading
meaning into an http header that the header is not supposed to carry.
(Additionally, considering in the default config we don't even send
last-modified headers on special:Recentchanges (more trouble than its worth to
figure out if anyone has patrolled any edits), I can't imagine its a very
useful program either).

Per my notes on bug 26952 -- this is a longstanding IE issue which can be
easily solved by setting an explicit width on the fields in CSS.

However IE does its default mapping from the input 'size' attribute to a width
(presumably based on font metrics in some way), it's a little narrower for
password fields.

A CSS width will override that with a more explicit size, which'd be win.

[Bug 24230] Implement JAR detection

Correction: zlib is not enabled by default when you compile PHP from source.
However it is enabled in the Windows builds, and in the Debian packages.

It's not necessary to have a META-INF directory. Here is page with an applet
which doesn't have one, it works just fine:

http://noc.wikimedia.org/~tstarling/odjar/

java.util.jar is not used to open JAR files during startup. The class files for
it themselves inside a JAR file. Instead, the native C code is used directly:

(In reply to comment #3)
> $ java -jar gifar.gif
> Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: gifar/Main

The tag can contain a "code" attribute which specifies which class to
run. In this case, no Main-Class entry (and indeed no manifest at all) is
required.

To check if a zip file is safe, you have to check whether there are any files
in it with a ".class" extension. To do this, you have to scan the central
directory, with a zip reader that supports ZIP64 including the central
directory compression feature. Doing this in pure PHP is possible, using zlib
for decompression, but note that the PEAR Archive_Zip library is not good
enough because it does not support ZIP64.

(In reply to comment #0)
> * Read with ZipArchive http://php.net/manual/en/ref.zip.php

That extension has a big ugly "unmaintained" warning on it, the PECL extension
is recommended instead:

http://www.php.net/manual/en/zip.installation.php

The zip extension is not enabled by default, and so most installations do not
have access to it. The zlib extension is enabled by default, that's why I think
it's the best solution. Java only supports zlib for decompression, so there's
no need to support any other decompression method to check for safety in Java.

[Bug 26952] UI issues at 'Create account' page

Brion Vibber changed:

--- Comment #1 from Brion Vibber 2011-02-07 00:30:14 UTC ---
The password fields being different sizes is a longstanding IE-specific
problem, where it has different mappings of the 'size' attribute (max count in
characters) to the default width of the actual input box for regular text
inputs and password inputs.

This is likely due to either forcing a font, or differences in how it
calculates the width based on average character sizes. (Since every "character"
shown in the password box is a little dot thingy, they're all the same size,
which is much narrower than many regular letters.)

Apparently this can be worked around by specifying explicit widths in the
stylesheets.

(This is a totally trivial problem in that it has no actual negative effects,
it's just a little annoying looking.)

The side-by-side issue is likely related to longstanding issues with the
MediaWiki login/create account box itself *being floated*, which is confusing
and weird, and it's not always obvious how to make sure the text either does,
or doesn't float.

Not super high priority, but also not a new issue. The float on that should
probably be removed all around for good measure, but may need minor fixups in
various skins.

[Bug 24230] Implement JAR detection

2011-02-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24230

--- Comment #3 from Marcin Cieślak 2011-02-07
00:28:52 UTC ---
To be sucessfully execute, JAR file needs to have a "Main-Class" entry in the
META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file:

Here is a test using the abovementioned class using Jython
(http://www.jython.org/):

$ jython
Jython 2.5.1 (Release_2_5_1:6813, Sep 26 2009, 13:47:54)
[Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (Sun Microsystems Inc.)] on java1.6.0_03-p4
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import java
>>> y = java.util.jar.JarFile("/usr/local/share/java/apache-ant/lib/ant.jar")
>>> print y.manifest.mainAttributes.getValue("Main-Class")
org.apache.tools.ant.Main
>>> y = java.util.jar.JarFile("/usr/local/share/java/classes/log4j.jar")
>>> print y.manifest.mainAttributes.getValue("Main-Class")
None

So "ant.jar" is "executable" with while log4j.jar is not.

Maybe checking for "Main-Class:" string is better, since zip_open() does not
really detect embedded JAR as a ZIP file (checked with
http://quarkmitsauce.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/gifar.gif).

This gif file has no zip entries according to PHP zip_entry_name, but Java
still detects the manifest:

$ java -jar gifar.gif
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: gifar/Main

We need a reasonable middle ground between a crude check of sequence of bytes
and canonical unpacking of the ZIP file.

Per bug 19468 the options *are* removed when actually disabled...

The "(disabled)" text here is not due to features being disabled, but rather
because someone physically added that text to the labels in July 2009:
http://prototype.wikimedia.org/rc-en/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Tog-enotifusertalkpages&action=history
http://prototype.wikimedia.org/rc-en/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Tog-enotifwatchlistpages&action=history

In a quick test, I can confirm that I'm not receiving notification emails when
I have another account edit either my user talk page or a watched page,
regardless of major/minor.

Based on what should be the running code, if the config options are in fact
disabled, they won't show up in prefs; they may be breaking for some other
reason.

Someone needs to check the config files and see that things are actually set
right there -- the settings don't seem to be visible yet as the production ones
are, cf bug 27154.

Changed bug summary and product/component to reflect this appears to be a
prototype-specific config issue.

[Bug 27208] New: Create web/wiki front-end for managing the Planet aggregators

2011-02-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27208

 Summary: Create web/wiki front-end for managing the Planet
aggregators
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: Extensions requests
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: br...@pobox.com
Blocks: 26863

When we set up the first planet.wikimedia.org aggregators, the intention was to
set up a quickie web interface for managing them as well: setting up new
languages, adding & removing blogs from the lists, etc.

It seems nobody's gotten around to this, and it still requires a combination of
SVN check-in rights (to create or update the config files) and shell access (to
set up new language sites).

This bottlenecks a lot of requests, eg bug 26863.

More integrated feed management & planet setup from a MW extension could make
this easier to manage from within the wikimedia system.

ODF is old hat -- our zip file type detectors were born to detect them.

As for what the reminder seems to be about, there's s client-side JS library
alleged to encapsulate in-browser viewing, and it seems at least limited
editing also, for the ODF document & presentation file types (.odt & .odp):

[Bug 27207] New: maintenance/sql.php should use Maintenance::readConsole to provide readline editing

sql.php seems to be optimized for running pre-prepared scripts, which is all
well and good but it would be nice to get the GNU readline goodies when stdin
is actually a terminal.

The readline stuff is encapsulated in Maintenance::readConsole() which'll
return a line at a time.

Looks like sql.php sends stdin straight into Database::sourceStream() which
does fgets() directly... that'll probably need to be extended to add a callback
to override the actual reading, or else clever use of stream wrappers. :)

It has been pretty stable. I believe there is still one issue though. I seem to
remember there is not a proper rollback of the actions if one of the move's
actions fails. This has happened a few times this year (mostly due to
filesystem problems ???), resulting in part of the file record being move
(thumbs separated from originals, originals separated from page record). I
believe some improvements were made in this area, but i'm not sure we solved
them all. Haven't heard about such a thing in a couple of months though.

When the interface language is RTL (e.g. Hebrew), the default directionality of
elements in the translating page should reflect this correctly.

The translation editing box should be RTL by default. And vice versa, the
directionality of the box with the original message and the down arrow that
copies it to the editing box should match the directionality of the source
language. Usually it's English, but currently in the Hebrew interface the
source message is displayed right-to-left, which is confusing.

[Bug 27173] Remove noindex meta tag from HTML of logged in users

> ergo, pageOverride() does not account for usergroup settings in viewing stable

Yes, it does check that. That's what showDraftByDefault() does.

The real cause is that logged-in users see the current version by default, even
if it is synced with the stable version. Try logging in and adding ?stable=1 to
the page URL (noindex goes away). The two versions are almost the same, except
the stable has filetimestamp=X added to thumbnail links. In rare cases, the
current version might use newer versions of Commons files too (feature of bug
15748).

One way to index these would be to have setRobotPolicy() check for this
scenario (viewing the draft when the stable synced with it).

I've been doing refactoring yesterday to make the code easier to read. I'll
deal with this after finishing that.

[Bug 27173] Remove noindex meta tag from HTML of logged in users

2011-02-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27173

--- Comment #14 from Derk-Jan Hartman 2011-02-06
19:30:26 UTC ---
This is caused because in FlaggedArticleView.php, setRobotPolicy has the
following check:

if ( !$this->pageOverride() && $this->article->isStableShownByDefault() ) {
// set noindex
}

in this check, $this->pageOverride() returns false for stable versions for
logged in users, yet true for stable versions for non-logged in users.

pageOverride() returns false for logged in users, due to the following check:

$config = $this->article->getVisibilitySettings();
# Does the stable version override the current one?
if ( $config['override'] ) {
if ( $this->showDraftByDefault() ) {
return ( $wgRequest->getIntOrNull( 'stable' )
=== 1 );
}
# Viewer sees stable by default
return !( $wgRequest->getIntOrNull( 'stable' ) === 0 );

ergo, pageOverride() does not account for usergroup settings in viewing stable
pages, it only takes into account usersettings, page settings and url
overrides.

[Bug 27023] once dom ready mediawiki.loader.using issues callback before modules are ready

2011-02-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27023

--- Comment #5 from Michael Dale 2011-02-06 19:24:10 UTC ---
Setting loader.using to be only pre-dom ready would be bad. The mediaWiki code
documentation that says the callback should be issued once the modules are
'ready' and the code includes stubs for checking if it can do a document.write
vs a script append. As mentioned above if not supported it should fire an
error. But feature wise its something that /should/ be supported, else people
will have to wrap the resource loader functionality with ugly hacks anytime
they want to load after DOM is ready. If random client code becomes responsible
manually loading decencies post DOM ready it will get messy and difficult to
avoid re-loading the same module twice.

There are lots of reasons you may want to load dependencies after the DOM is
ready. Like a gadget that searches the page for a particular dom id or css
class or config, or sub-components invoked on user interaction like an
add-media-wizard pulling in an 'upload wizard' interface when you click the
'upload' button on edit pages ( without loading all of this every time you
visit the base edit page ) or anytime you have asynchronous build out of
components with dynamic dependencies ( ie checking the API or DOM some
information that affects the set of interfaces that you load for that page ...
or simply for performance reasons you may want to display the page before every
possible user interface and sub component is loaded and blinded.

Done in r81601. PagedTiffHandler appears to construct the thumb path somewhere
else than getThumbType and thus needs fixing.

Chad got the point. Mentioning Google was just an example and nothing else.
Independent of the fact if crawlers do their job logged in or not, the meta
tags are senseless and have to be removed - or can anyone explain to me why a
crawler must not index an article version which has been checked ("flagged")?!

[Bug 27173] Remove noindex meta tag from HTML of logged in users

2011-02-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27173

--- Comment #12 from Chad H. 2011-02-06 19:06:27 UTC

FWIW, the indexing problem is an issue on Google's end, not ours (bug 27155
tracks that)

We've actually been serving noindex,nofollow to logged in users in FlaggedRevs
for quite some time now (the code in this regard hasn't changed in about a
year). I think Googlebot's problems just raised people's awareness and it made
a decent original assumption as to the cause.

Whether or not we should serve noindex,nofollow to logged in users is
debatable, and I guess this bug serves that purpose.

[Bug 27202] New: API: Add timestamp sort to list=allimages

2011-02-06 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27202

 Summary: API: Add timestamp sort to list=allimages
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.18-svn
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Normal
Component: API
AssignedTo: roan.katt...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: duplicate...@googlemail.com
CC: bryan.tongm...@gmail.com, s...@reedyboy.net,
vasi...@gmail.com, soxre...@gmail.com

I have not found a way, to get images sorted by timestamp, so there is no way
to simulate Special:NewFiles with the api.

Please allow sorting by timestamp for list=allimages with optional start/end
(see list=categorymembers for a example of timestamp sorting in an api module).

Thanks.

These are two separated bugs: One about that Google issue and one about useless

called bugzilla:27173 (that one here), the former bugzilla:27155.

Erm, are you commenting here without actually having looked into the matter?
The META tag bug affects dewiki, huwiki and plwiki *only*, so of course it
can't have any effect on "all wikipedias", no matter what that effect might
be...

So, the real reason about this bug is that Google is miscrawling wikipedia and
someone though that such line was at fault. It is not.
If that was the reason, all wikipedias would be affected, not only dewiki. No
wikipedia article would be listed. And if it were logged in, cached pages would
contain the Google user name at the top.
