[Bug 28359] New: diff radio buttons in revision history are not vertically aligned when Justify paragraphs is enabled

2011-04-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28359

Summary: diff radio buttons in revision history are not
vertically aligned when Justify paragraphs is
enabled
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: wikimedia-deployment
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Special pages
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: amir.ahar...@mail.huji.ac.il

In the Revision history there are radio buttons for selecting the versions for
diffing. They are supposed to be vertically aligned. When the Justify
paragraphs option is enabled in the preferences they may move and break the
alignment.

A simple way to solve it would be not to use paragraph justification for the
revision history page at all.

I can reproduce this bug:
1. Start editing a new page Test
2. Insert {{DISPLAYTITLE:this will not be displayed}}
3. Click on Show preview
-- Title is Test instead of this will not be displayed

Tested with my own wiki:
- MediaWiki 1.16.2
- $wgAllowDisplayTitle = true;
- $wgRestrictDisplayTitle = false;

After saving, the correct title is displayed.

@Purodha: What exactly did you try? Which title did you use?

for Wikipedia where you have a lot of user scripts that change an interface.
And I'm glad you are going to have a look at it I just wish you would

[Bug 27488] Move JS libraries back to a header and do not load them dynamically

2011-04-01 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27488

--- Comment #15 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2011-04-01 11:03:34 UTC ---
In one of Steve Sauders' talks (thanks for the link Trevor) he highlights how
sites are doing today. He compares several different techniques and in the end
I draw the following conclusion:

* Overall it's best to move them down instead of up becuase every script src=
tag in the head will cause the browser to stop rendering, stop downloading
and stop executing until that one script is ready, and then it will start
downloading the next script, and then when it's finished downloading (and
executing) it only then will it start on the next element. So these script
tags really stop pretty much everything (Not just downloading but also
execution of it is part of the hold up).

* He also mentions an alternative in which he compares several sites (on of
which is Wikipedia by the way) and aside from these sites (at that time)
loading everything on top he checks how many of this code is actually being
executing before or at the dom-ready event. [1] The alternative is to have
both: All styles on top. Scripts that are needed right away on top and the rest
dynamically from a call on the bottom (ie. mw.loader.load( .. ).go(); )

I think we should definitly consider the concept of having two queues. Although
it may not be as easy as that due to the cachability of the html.

But I think having something like the following:

--

head
!-- this will be the names of all modules that have queue set to top [2]
--
 link rel=stylesheet href=load.php?modules=these|are|top|moduelsonly=styles
 /
 script src=load.php?modules=startup|site|user/script
 script src=load.php?modules=these|are|top|modulesonly=scripts/script
/head
body
 ...
 script
  mw.loader.load( ['these', 'are', 'bottom', 'modules'] ).go();
 /script
/head

-- instead of the following that we have now --

head
 link rel=stylesheet href=load.php?modules=siteonly=styles /
 link rel=stylesheet href=load.php?modules=useronly=styles /
/head
body
 ...
 script src=load.php?modules=startup/script
 script
  mw.loader.load( ['these', 'are', 'top', 'and', 'bottom', 'modules'] ).go();
 /script
 script src=load.php?modules=siteonly=scripts /script
 script src href=load.php?modules=useronly=scripts /script

--

I think that may be a good way to to handle this.

[1] http://blip.tv/file/3060565 section initial payload and execution after ~
20:00, rough quote: About 32% of the functions defined in code download on
en.wikipedia.org/wiki (114K of JS) is actually executed before or at the
dom-ready event. The rest was not needed (some small amount may be for errors
or cases that don't apply to me), but most of it could've been deferred without
missing anything.

[2] Note that this may also solve the problem we're having with styles being
applied too late (ie. LiquidThreads flash-of-unstyled-content that is not
dynamically created - that's currently being workaround by using
addModuleStyles instead of addModule ). LiquidThreads would either mark it's
either stuff as 'queue' = 'top' – or it would split up in two modules, one
(perhaps only with styles) as 'queue' = 'top' and the other one (whether or
not implied) as 'queue' = 'bottom'.

[Bug 19161] Auto account creation creates privacy vulnerability

John Mark Vandenberg jay...@gmail.com changed:

 Resolution|FIXED |

--- Comment #43 from John Mark Vandenberg jay...@gmail.com 2011-04-01
11:36:04 UTC ---
This hasn't solved the problem described. It has been hidden, poorly.

I have randomly picked a new autocreated user, Nane2011, to demonstrate.

Whereas before the privacy vuln required looking at the user creation log,
which is now blank

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Special:Logtype=newusersuser=Nane2011

Now, the exact same information is visible here:

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Special%3AListUsersusername=Nane2011group=limit=1

The information is also available at:

http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php?user=Nane2011

And it is distributed to the toolserver.

Moreover, hiding the new user creation entry is _not_ the solution. That just
hides it, and then the wiki database contains information which it needs to
keep hidden in order to protect the privacy of its users. Any number of
oversights/screw ups with data management can result in accidental release of
this information. Avoid creating data that you want to remain hidden.

And if you are going to continue with this 'hiding' approach, please revert the
current 'fix' until it has been properly built and implemented, otherwise users
have the false expectation that this information is hidden.

I'm not quite sure if this is invalid. It would be nice in some cases if the
extension ExpandTemplates had the option to output into HTML rather than
outputting the (somewhat final) wikitext. Perhaps this bug needs to be
refocused? If you built the option into the extension, the API module could
then follow with its own option to provide the parsed wikitext (which would
just be a wrapper for action=parse, yes). This should probably be poked at a
bit more, so re-opening for now.

 CC||b...@mzmcbride.com
 Resolution||INVALID

--- Comment #1 from MZMcBride b...@mzmcbride.com 2011-04-01 15:19:33 UTC ---
This bug is invalid. The function of Special:ListUsers is to list users on the
wiki. It doesn't matter _how_ those user accounts were created (whether through
unified login, through manual creation, by an admin after an individual's
request, or with the help of Indian slave labor), if the accounts exist on a
given wiki, they should be listed. That's the purpose of Special:ListUsers.

As explained in bug 19161 comment 43:
Moreover, hiding the new user creation entry is _not_ the solution. That just
hides it, and then the wiki database contains information which it needs to
keep hidden in order to protect the privacy of its users. Any number of
oversights/screw ups with data management can result in accidental release of
this information. Avoid creating data that you want to remain hidden.

The issue is not that Special:ListUsers does its job to list the users on the
wiki. The issue is that some people feel certain auto-created accounts should
not be silently (and magically) auto-created in some situations.

Resolving this bug as invalid.

I've opened Bug #28366 and Bug #28367 to address the issues you've raised.

If you want the current solution completely reverted, I suggest you open a new
bug to that effect. I recommend you look at Bug #542 (fixed, closed) and later
bugs like Bug #27527, Bug #28182, etc for an example of how to log issues of
problems that fixing a bug creates.

Even if you disagree with the fix and think it is the wrong thing to do,
reopening this bug is not appropriate. The fix is done. It has been applied
and deployed. It is appropriate to *file a new bug* if you think the old
behavior should be restored. Re-opening an old bug is not the correct way to
address the current situation.

Avoid creating data that you want to remain hidden.

If you think that is what is needed, I suggest opening a new bug to that
effect.

I'm resolving this bug as invalid. As outlined in bug 28366 comment 1, the
issue here is not that the data is exposed, it's that the data is silently
being propagated to other wikis in some situations without the user's approval.

Even if we accepted that the Toolserver needed to be adjusted (which it does
not), the way replication is currently implemented (with nearly all tables
being copied directly to the Toolserver and then MySQL views limiting what
Toolserver users can see), it would be a matter for the Toolserver
administrators and their issue tracker (https://jira.toolserver.org), not an
issue for Bugzilla.

In order to help alleviate many of the privacy concerns raised in Bug #19161,

to disable auto-creation as the default.

I've opened Bug #28366 and Bug #28367 to address the issues you've raised.

I've resolved both of those bugs as invalid.

If you want the current solution completely reverted, I suggest you open a new

 later
bugs like Bug #27527, Bug #28182, etc for an example of how to log issues of

No, this is the bug tracking this problem. If this bug hasn't been adequately
addressed, it should remain open.

Your assumption that the fix is done is flawed. The fix isn't done because it
didn't resolve this bug adequately. This bug needs to remain open until this
issue is properly addressed.

Avoid creating data that you want to remain hidden.

If you think that is what is needed, I suggest opening a new bug to that
 effect.

This bug is about limiting what data is propagated and in what circumstances.
There's no need for a separate bug.

Re-opening this bug.

(after edit-conflict, post is directed at comment 44)
Facts:
a) This bug report is about a privacy vulnerability
b) The fix fails to solve a)
c) The fix has annoying consequences

I agree that c) might not be sufficient to reopen this bug, but b) most
certainly is.
Note that Comment 43 brought a completely new aspect into the discussion – it's
not anymore about inconvenient side-effects, it's that the fix fails to do
what it claims (i.e. removing the privacy vulnerability).

You cannot import from w:en on wikibooks, because the URL is not created
correct. The url is created the same way, as {{fullurl:}} do it:

{{fullurl:w:en:Template:0}}

gives

http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:Template:0

and that url is not resolved from the Importer to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:0

Resolving local redirects is a bad idea, because then you cannot import a
redirect, but resolving external redirects should by done.

Checking for TorBlock is an expensive operation, so that is only done, when
needed and that is not on page view.

See bug 11700 for the cascade protection, it is also an expensive operation.

(In reply to comment #6)
I'm actually seeing this behavior on my 1.15 install.

I see it now, seems to affect all versions of MediaWiki.

Proposed patch is a little less draconian than comment 4 (also it's in Ruby,
not Brainfuck it would seem) prohibits anonymous actions.

 My boss is kind of
anxious about it; when can we see a tarball?

Hmm, to release a patch for all affected versions? Gonna need at least a week
or two to sort ouf the backports and run unit tests for regressions.

Actually we (usually) can, as you can check in our import log:
I don't know why [[Template:0]] behaves different from other pages we imported
 from English Wikipedia.
The wiki have not any success import under 1.17 from w:en, so it does not
affect Template:0 alone.

Since r67684 the redirects are not followed by default ($followRedirects is

Why is this necessary? CheckUser is supposed to be restricted as is, so I
don't know why we'd need to hide the data from even them. We don't really have
anything like this either, e.g., there's no block-protect.

Sets character set to UTF-8 within the HTTP header's Content-Type field.

Here's a patch that will do the trick. I would have applied it, but I wanted to
get some input on one concern.

Should we really be assuming that the JavaScript and CSS content is UTF-8?
Should we be detecting the encoding and using that? What happens when we are
combining multiple encodings into a single response? Should we convert
everything to UTF-8?

I'm looking for some opinions, especially those based in experience with
handling text encoding within MediaWiki.

I would actually suggest enabling auto-creation by default. The defaults
should keep the majority of users in mind, and the majority of users would want
their accounts created automatically (that's the purpose of the feature in the
first place). New users would not care or know that their accounts were
automatically created, so they probably wouldn't look for such an option nor
would they want to disable it. People who have privacy concerns, likely the
minority, are usually very preference-savvy and would tend to look for any
settings to enable that would increase their privacy.

The problem is exactly that this message is used in JavaScript code:

Since this is JS and Resource Loader is now in place, does it still exist?

This is just for Wikimedia Commons (and now for English Wikipedia), as a
namespace filter appeared not to be an option for them as of nearly three years
ago. The filemover capability at English Wikipedia was implemented at bug
27927. The attempt to get a filemover capability at Test Wikipedia
http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Main_Page#File_movers_group (to allow
testwiki to better reflect the current state of English Wikipedia) has sadly
had no responses yet. :(

Created attachment 8361
  -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=8361
do not add link to Special:RevisionDelete for shared revision deleted files

The timestamp in the file history of a shared revision deleted file gets a link
to the local Special:RevisionDelete, when the user can see revision deleted
content, but that is useless, because the file is not on the local server.

I have create a patch, to replace the link by the timestamp.

Thanks.

In addition to bug 28306.

[Bug 25558] Mobile site should be rewritten in PHP

If having this written in PHP is a priority, why was it permitted to be
 written
in Ruby in the first place?

I wasn't there, so this could well be wrong, but when it was first written the
priority was just getting it in place, not necessarily longer-term maintenance.

The pilot project was a success, a need and use case for mobile front end has
been seen and widely understood. Now, how will we keep up long-term
maintenance?

I'm working with Tomasz to get this rewrite going and already have a prototype
server allocated for it.
