[Bug 30740] New: User preference usage statistics for showjumplinks and skin

Bug #: 30740
Summary: User preference usage statistics for showjumplinks and
skin
 Product: Wikimedia
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: mediawiki-b...@nadir-seen-fire.com
Classification: Unclassified

I'd like to get ahold of some statistics on the use of two preferences by
users.
Inactive users should be filtered out with user_touched, I know it gets updated
in other circumstances but it's better than nothing.

The first preference is showjumplinks. I'd like to see how many users are
actually disabling this user preference.

And the other is skin. I'd like to see how many users -- and relative to other
skins how many users -- are actively using the legacy skins Cologne Blue,
Nostalgia, and Standard/Classic.

[Bug 30739] New: IPv6 addresses not obtained successfully from X-Forwarded-For on Squid 3.1.15

2011-09-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30739

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 30739
Summary: IPv6 addresses not obtained successfully from
X-Forwarded-For on Squid 3.1.15
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.19-svn
 Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
 Keywords: ipv6
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: User interface
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: carlb...@hotmail.com
Classification: Unclassified

I'm running Mediawiki 1.17 and 1.19-alpha behind a Squid 3.1.15 server.

On what appears to be a valid configuration if the user is IPv4, MediaWiki
can't get user IPv6 addresses out of X-Forwarded-For header and into the wiki.

I've compiled the latest Squid from source and my
/usr/local/squid/etc/squid.conf looks something like:

http_port 96.45.180.93:80 vhost
http_port [2605:ac00:f000:102:230:48ff:fece:ce12]:80 vhost
cache_peer 127.0.0.1 parent 80 0 no-query originserver round-robin

Sure enough, if I attempt to access this box from elsewhere on the same subnet,
I can see the "remote" IPv6 address recorded in Squid's access.log:

1315105640.362874 2605:ac00:f000:102:217:3fff:fece:e23d
TCP_MISS/301 550 GET http://oscar6/wiki/special:mypage -
ROUNDROBIN_PARENT/127.0
.0.1 text/html
1315105642.781409 2605:ac00:f000:102:217:3fff:fece:e23d TCP_MISS/302 527
GET
http://oscar6/wiki/Kerfiss%C3%AD%C3%B0a:Notandas%C3%AD%C3%B0a_m%C3%ADn -
ROUNDR
OBIN_PARENT/127.0.0.1 text/html
1315105644.791 0 2605:ac00:f000:102:217:3fff:fece:e23d
TCP_NEGATIVE_HIT/404
12740 GET http://oscar6/index.php? - NONE/- text/html

but that request for special:mypage just sent me to user:127.0.0.1
instead of user:2605:ac00:f000:102:217:3fff:fece:e23d?

If I try to edit, even though I'm on an IPv6 link from some other box (Squid is
on the same box as MediaWiki, web browser is not) IPv6 anon-edits are
attributed to 127.0.0.1 (Apache's internal IPv4 address, behind the Squid 3
server) while IPv4 anon-edits are attributed correctly. CheckUser logs also
show the same pattern of all IPv6 users being "127.0.0.1" for want of XFF data.

Is there an easy way to check where the XFF is getting clobbered? I see Squid's
bugtracker lists XFF under IPv6 as having supposedly been fixed a year ago, but
I can't allow Squid 3 to monitor both IPv4/IPv6 if (for want of XFF) all the
IPv6 anon-IP activity yields in the wiki is the IPv4 address of Apache itself.

The committed fix (r94275) is not correct. It will still pollute the cache and
might affect other parts of MediaWiki.

I'll cite what I wrote to the Lockdown-talk-page:

I've searched a bit more and found a solution:
Add $this->clearInstanceCache(); before the end of User::load. It prevents the
cache-pollution, but will still give the wrong groups the first time(s?)
Lockdown asks for them. That should/could be resolved as stated in the last
sentence of my cite.

BASEPAGENAME doesn't always return the username. See what happens in page
"User:Example/Archive/2010"

BASEPAGENAME → Example/Archive
→ Example

Furthermore, PAGEOWNER should also check for the namespace to be User or
User Talk, and if not, then should return nothing.

The user Yourmomsuckscock is not hidden on mediawiki.org (It is list on

for documentation, it is not the block itself. WORKSFORME.

Hide the user with a reblock and the block will not shown on Special:BlockList

Are you sure? Can you link a MediaWiki-spacename page where with
empty username is included? If it is, I doubt it would be the better default.
Default options should correspond to the more frequently encountered
situations.

IMHO, gender function will bring much more utility (ie. more frequent usage) in
user space pages messages and userboxes, where messages both from and to the
page owner should be easily gender-customized.

It is not possible to fix this at the moment, because
Parser::addTrackingCategory is "protected" and cannot called from the
ParserFunctions extension to add the tracking category.

It is possible to copy all the checks and adding it manuell, but that sounds
not so good.

I think this issue should be closed as a duplicate of bug 24156, as I think the
solution for bug 24156 will involve adding the user name and no longer
requiring it to be "first in sentence". If this is correct, please close this

[Bug 30737] New: User names should be moved into log messages.

2011-09-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30737

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 30737
Summary: User names should be moved into log messages.
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: 1.19-svn
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Keywords: i18n
 Severity: enhancement
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: niklas.laxst...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
CC: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
Classification: Unclassified

This is closely related to bug 24156 but is an independant issue.

Currently, log messages referring to a user name - usually the
user who caused the log entry to be created by doing something -
list the user name in a quasi tabular format in front of the
message telling what exactly happened.

In English, this can be read as "user-name caused this and that."
giving a nice sentence. Messages are worded accordingly. This
does not translate to languages, where "user-name" cannot be
the first word in a sentence. (Grammar, syntax, word order,
good taste or style, and politeness rules may be prohibiting)

It might thus be advisable, to tie the user name into the
message text so as to allow it to appear at any place in a
sentence.

This gives up, however, some of the ease of machine processing
coming with its current fixed position. My current opinion is
that machine readable logs should be availabe much better via
the API, and fixed positioning should be given up in favour of
better i18n and language support.

The possible half-way solution, keeping the tabular user name
and passing the user name to the message handling of the textual
part, would allow genderized messsages, and the message could
even repeat the user name instead of using "this user" etc.,
but I think that makes log entries less readable.

We could of course include the user names in the message texts
andkeep the tabular user name field, assigning it to a
display:none CSS class. This increases log page size.
Yet this dupliction, without display:none, may be a good interim
solution while messages are beeing adopted to the new style.
Another way to make a transit could be to identify all
messages being used for logging, insert "[[user:$1|$1 "
at their beginning in all message source files, and alter
message handling function calls accordingly. Thus, translators
had unlimited time to fix them.

--- Comment #4 from Siebrand 2011-09-03 18:15:43 UTC ---
At the moment is is impossible. The regular expressions of the configured
blacklists are merged into one, and only then applied ("array_merge(
$this->getLocalBlacklists(), $this->getSharedBlacklists() )".

To make this possible, each regular expressions should get a source ID (I would
suggest an int from 0 to number of configured lists -1) based on the configured
blacklists, and from there this should be passed on.

The coming to the user messaging, I could imagine that there is some message
that can be used to add to the matching regular expression(s) (f.e. key
'spam-blacklist-hit-on-list-[123..n]'. It should allow for the location/URL of
the list
to be added to the message as a parameter. If the specific message does not
exist, it should probably allow for a fallback to key 'spam-blacklist-hit' or
something.

[Bug 5231] Mouseover explanations for interlanguage links in native languages

2011-09-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5231

wp.design...@gmail.com changed:

 What|Removed |Added

 Priority|Lowest |Normal
CC||wp.design...@gmail.com

--- Comment #12 from wp.design...@gmail.com 2011-09-03 17:53:27 UTC ---
I proposed including the language after the article name in the tooltip, e.g.
>Michael Dukakis [German]
>Μάικλ Δουκάκης [Greek]
>Michael Dukakis [Spanish]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28proposals%29#Add_language_names_in_English_as_tooltip_in_language_links

It was received positively. This seems like a worthwhile enhancement.

[Bug 30569] Auto detect username when is used in User or User talk spaces

--- Comment #6 from Purodha Blissenbach
2011-09-03 17:25:42 UTC ---
In MediaWiki:xyzzy, is already addressing
the reader of a messae, i.e. the currently logged in user. I doubt that is
is a good idea to alter this behavour for other namespaces, because it is
possible (though hardly advisable) to transclude those message anywhere
with and and with
and we were likely to create inconsistencies.

Since contributions are possibly moved or copied around, my preference goes
with something like with a verbatim
user name for the cases this bug is about. That can be had with
on user
page, user talk pages, and their subpages, if I am not mistaken.

Don't close this bug as long as it blocks other bugs that are not closed:

 bug 3969 -- UTF-8 compatibility (tracking)
bug 6948 -- natural number sorting
bug 29788 -- sort Swedish letters correctly (at end of alphabet)

These bugs effectively depend on UCA (or UCA improvements)

My opinion is that bug 3969 should be detached, but the other two should be
reattached to one of the 4 new bugs, on which they depend (most probably bug
30673).

And the new bugs should still be linked to this bug 164, transformed only in a
tracking number (that should not be closed as long as the new 4 bugs are open)

This was done in r72055. 12 Vector specific messages remain at the moment, but
those have a valid reason, IMO.

Slightly updated the description and added the i18n keyword.

Issue confirmed in browser. Was also unable to delete using API with
pywikipediabot.

We have a lot of system messages on translatewiki.net (1M+) and I haven't ever
seen this (reported), although it could be because of the higher memory limit
we have there.

Just to test, I tried to change the content of the page. That also gave me an
OoM, but the edit got through. Raising priority because of this to
normal/normal, because it smells fishy.

[Bug 2399] Unicode normalization "sorts" Hebrew/Arabic/Myanmar vowels wrongly

--- Comment #55 from Philippe Verdy 2011-09-03 16:37:59

All my remarks in the previous message also apply to the Arabic diacritics.

For example the assumptions made by Brion Viber in his message #23 are
completely wrong. He has not understood what is normalization and the fact
that, only with conforming renderers, the normalization *must not* affect the
rendering (but if they do, this is due to bugs in renderers, not bugs in the
normalizer used on MediaWiki).

[Bug 2399] Unicode normalization "sorts" Hebrew/Arabic/Myanmar vowels wrongly

2011-09-03 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2399

--- Comment #54 from Philippe Verdy 2011-09-03 16:33:04
UTC ---
Final note: it is highly recommanded to NOT save texts with an implicit
normalization. Even if normalization is implemted correctly.

There are known defects (yes bugs in renderers of browsers that frequently do
not implement normalizations and that are not able to sort, combine and
position the diacritics correctly if they are not in a specific order, which is
not the same as the normalized order)

There are also because incorrect assumptions made by writers (that have not
understood when and where to insert CGJ to restrict the normalization of
reordering some pairs of diacritics), and so have written their texts in such a
way that they "seem" to render correctly, but only on a bogous browser not
performing the normalizations correctly and/or with strong limitations in their
text renderer (unable to recognize strings that are canonically equivalent but
for which they expect only one order for successive diacritics in order to
position them correctly).

This type of defects is typical of the "bug" described above about the
normalized order of the DAGESH (a central point in the middle of a consonannt
letter, in order to modify it) or SIN/SHIN DOTS (above the letter, on the left
or right, also modifying the consonnant), and the other Hebrew vowel
diacritics: Yes the normalization reorders the vowel diacritics before the
diacritics that modify the consonnant (this is the effect of an old assignment
of their relative "combining classes", in a completely illogical order of
values, but this will NEVER be changed as it would affect the normalizations).

But many renderers are not able to display correctly the strings that are
encoded in normalized order (base consonnant, vowel diacritic, sin dot or shin
dot or dagesh). Instead they expect that the string will be encoded as (base
consonnant, dagesh or sin dot or shin dot, vowel diacritic), even if it is
completely canonically equivalent to the previous and should display exactly
the same ! (such rendering bugs were found in old versions of Windows with IE6
or before).

For this reason, you should not, on MediaWiki, apply any implicit
renormalization of any edited text. If one wants to enter (base consonnant,
dagesh or sin dot or shin dot, vowel diacritic) in the Wiki text, keep it
unchanged, do not normalize it, as it will display correctly on both the old
bogous renderers and on newer ones.

Per previous comments, not making large global changes to get everything
consistent. Guidelines are at mw:Localisation#Adding_new_messages which I
just reviewed and updated a bit. We are planning to start paying more attention
to following these guidelines in the localisation team, and we will be more
picky during code review.

WONTFIX is the most appropriate solution, even though it doesn't look all that
friendly :).
