[Bug 30046] Adding possibility to get a different sidebar for logged in and not logged in users

2011-10-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30046

--- Comment #2 from Paolo Benvenuto 2011-10-12 05:49:52
UTC ---
The user case is that of a wiki where unregistered users aren't allowed to edit
pages: unregistered users are readers while registered users are editor.

In that case unregistered users are to be given a "reader's sidebar", with
links which are appropriated to their tasks.

Registered users, on the contrary, are to be given different links in order to
do their work.

About the caching, my wiki implements the double sidebar as described in the
description. I'm experimenting on it, with two browser, one logged in and the
other not logged it. My wiki uses memcached caching. In LocalSettings I have:

$wgMainCacheType = CACHE_MEMCACHED;
$wgParserCacheType = CACHE_MEMCACHED; # optional
$wgMessageCacheType = CACHE_MEMCACHED; # optional
$wgMemCachedServers = array (
 0 => '127.0.0.1:11211',
);
$wgSessionsInMemcached = true; # optional

Loading the same page at the same time with the two browsers shows the correct
(logged in or not logged in) sidebar. I.e.: apparently the caching doesn't
apply to the sidebar.

This functionality is actually not as easy as you describe it. That code change
you describe does not take into account that the addToSidebar line is in the
middle of caching code. If the sidebar cache is enabled, you can actually end
up with a logged out sidebar showing to logged in users, or a logged in sidebar
showing to logged out users, because that's what happens to be in the cache.

I've been considering this in my skin rewrite plans. However I still haven't
been shown an example where having two sidebar versions is a valid case, that
isn't actually part of a hack to work around something that should actually be
fixed instead of adding this hack.

Tbh, I almost want to WONTFIX this until someone actually gives a valid example
of why one would want two separate sidebars.

[Bug 31639] New: MediaWiki should use ETags instead of Last-Modified and the Logged out cookie hack

2011-10-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31639

 Web browser: ---
Bug #: 31639
Summary: MediaWiki should use ETags instead of Last-Modified
and the Logged out cookie hack
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: normal
 Priority: Unprioritized
Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: mediawiki-b...@nadir-seen-fire.com
Classification: Unclassified

Right now MediaWiki supports browser caching of pages for both logged in and
anonymous users through the Last-Modified header. MediaWiki uses a Loggedout
cookie hack to prevent anons from being served a bad cache from when they were
logged in. However there are a number of problems:
- As a result of the logged out cookie, after you log out, for quite some time
you are served 200 responses instead of proper 304's. In other words, even if
you're capable of viewing a cache and your browser doesn't have a stale user
cache in it you still won't get a cached page back. This means that logging in
and then logging back out will make your wiki viewing potentially slower than
being logged in.
- As another result of the logged out cookie, even though you're an anon, you
continue to bypass squid caches in most configurations and don't get the
advantage of seeing the same efficiently cached pages as all the other anons.
- And to top it off, the logged out cookie hack doesn't solve the issue in the
other direction. You can view a page, get a Last-Modified header back, log in,
go back to the page, and get a 304 that tells your browser to load it's cached
page of you logged out instead of the proper one with your logged in interface.

The only way to fix all these troubles is to drop the Logged out cookie hack
and instead use ETags which include info about the user so that when a user
logs out, logs in, has their talkpage edited (because we want notifications to
be sent), changes ip (if they're an anon and their ip address is being shown in
the header), etc... the ETag's contents will change.

There's an interesting note about ETags. Browsers can send multiple ETags in
their If-None-Match header. As a result a browser can actually have a logged
out version and one (or maybe more) logged in versions of a page in their
cache. If you view a page, log in, view it again, and log back out, when you go
back to the page even though you viewed it with a different ETag and a
different cached page, you could potentially end up getting a 304 because you
still had a cached version for logged out users ;).

( Similar to Bug #31487 )

:commons:File:David_Andrew_Jenkins_and_XAPP.jpg had (according to ExifTool)
XMP-tiff:Orientation set to 8. XMP is IPTC Core (Adobe XMP)

Bug: Apparently Mediawiki uses not only IFD0:Orientation (contrary to
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31504#c8 )

Btw: The image viewer gThumb which also rotates images based on EXIF info
didn't rotate the image (correct).

own testcase... http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:AXMPtiffbeach.jpg with
no EXIF data but the XMP-tiff:Orientation tag copyied over from
:commons:File:David_Andrew_Jenkins_and_XAPP.jpg
Expected: the image shows up in its physical orientation (that is 90° CW).
Observed: 180°CW as MW applies apparently rotation based on the Orientation
tag.

Reason: Either Mediawiki uses not only IFD0:Orientation (contrary to
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31504#c8 ) or Exiftool and
https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/exif-viewer/ do something really
wrong here since they say that the image has no EXIF.

Problem: As we now use exiftool to read the IFD0-Orientation tag to be able to
rotate images according to user expectations this breaks Rotatebot in Commons.

[Bug 31332] Provide a way to set the initial sort for sortable tables

2011-10-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31332

Krinkle changed:

 What|Removed |Added

CC||krinklem...@gmail.com
 Component|Resource Loader |Javascript

--- Comment #1 from Krinkle 2011-10-12 02:31:22 UTC ---
When permalinks are wanted we usually let the table be built with the
TablePager class, which provides server-side sortability for (single or
multi-page) tables. It uses query parameters in the URL to trigger which column
to sort and in which direction to sort it.

In JavaScript in general, and especially in jquery.tablesorter this would be
kinda akward to implement. The problem starts at identifying which table is
meant (since there can be multiple table.sortable elements on an article). Then
how to identify which column ? Refer by number ?

Currently for the on-page state an incrementing number is used to differentiate
between different tables etc. however these are only to be used within a state,
not in URLs to new instances/loads of the article as the numbers are likely not
the same (there could be an additional table, or tables re-ordered, merged,
moved etc. there is no reliable ID.

Taking that the given example is a table outputted by a MediaWiki (PHP)
extension, and not wikitext. Using TablePager (or a variation on it that allows
GET parameters to handle the sorting) should be do-able.

Alternatively you could implement a few lines of JavaScript as part of the
Translate-extension listening to a value in location.hash when the page is
loaded and trigger a sort. Again, I suggest to do this inside the special page
or extension instead of in jquery.tablesorter as jquery.tablesorter is
primarily meant for articles and needs to support multiple tables per-page.

Something with $(document).ready, window.location.hash and $(find table) using
$.fn.tablesorter or $.fn.click or $.fn.attr to somehow force an initial sort.

--
Moving from component ResourceLoader to JavaScript (related to the
jquery.tablesorter module)

--- Comment #13 from Siebrand 2011-10-12 01:13:04 UTC ---
Extension was deployed on meta.wikimedia.org. There is one demo page active[1].
There are a few minor issues known. One should be fixed before production pages
are added. As it is past 03:00 or 04:00 in NL and FI respectively, Niklas and I
are going to sleep now...

* NORMAL: renaming a page translation page generates too many log entries
(http://userbase.kde.org/index.php?title=Special:Log&limit=500&type=pagetranslation
)
* NORMAL: after marking an updated page as translated, I came back at
special:PT and saw the old version. Force reload gives the expected version.
* CRITICAL: derivative pages appear to be updated only to the one but latest
translation. May be a master/slave issue. To be researched.

We just set up Translate on Meta, but the message documentation language is
missing (see URL that gives "Specified language was invalid.").

The following should be added to the configuration for meta.wikimedia.org:

$wgExtraLanguageNames['qqq'] = 'Message documentation'; # No linguistic
content. Used for documenting messages

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&titles=Hello+World&rvlimit=1&rvprop=content%7Ctimestamp&format=json

returns:

{"timestamp":"2011-10-11T23:54:33Z","*":"A \"Hello world\" program is a
computer program that prints out \"Hello world\" on"}

for the query.pages[0].page.revisions[0]

Why is it assigning the content to a key called "*"?? This is unfortunate since
* is an operator in Javascript, so you can't use the normal
query.pages[0].page.revisions[0].*, and instead have to use
query.pages[0].page.revisions[0]['*']. Why don't we assign it to a key called
"rev" like in the XML version, or better yet "content" (the name of the
property)? All of the other properties have regular key names so why not the
content? Otherwise we are just giving JS developers a headache.

Consider a page "SourcePage" containing wikitext like this:

Assume that when the above is first added to SourcePage, TargetPage does not
exist. SourcePage is therefore categorized in Category:Bar.

Then create TargetPage. SourcePage is correctly purged, showing "Exists" and
showing Category:Foo at the bottom of the page. But if you actually look at the
two categories, SourcePage remains in Category:Bar and is not found in
Category:Foo.

This same thing happens with image links (the list at the bottom of the image
page is wrong) and template transclusion links (the list in the template's
Special:WhatLinksHere output is wrong). I haven't tested external links,
interwiki links, language links, or the like, but they are probably wrong too.

A null edit to SourcePage will, of course, fix all these problems, but it
shouldn't be necessary.

submitted the links it must have worked fine or it did the impossible ;)

Btw, I was able to paste the links 20 times on my test wiki now, without any

I played around with it for a while, only the 306
X links alone caused the error (in the
preview) but on my test wiki with 1.17 I was able to paste the links 12 times
and it did render fine (MW 1.17.0, PHP 5.3.1, memory_limit was 128MB, no
extensions). I know that this isn't really comparable cause the extensions eat
a lot of memory, but 12 times...

Updating summary, component and priority to indicate that this is a correctness
issue and is not an exploitable security issue. Reassigning to Chad.

[Bug 28135] Review and deploy VipsScaler extension

2011-10-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Tim Starling changed:

 What|Removed |Added

 |org |

--- Comment #2 from Tim Starling 2011-10-11 22:15:57

Outstanding issues:

* $wgMaxImageArea should only be used for scalers which decompress the source
image. This is essential if VIPS deployment is going to allow larger PNGs to be
uploaded. Needs a little bit of refactoring.
* The "comment" parameter in $scalerParams is not used, so that feature would
disappear entirely. Maybe shell out to exiv2 to add comments. $wgExiv2Command
is available in core and is used by PagedTiffHandler already.
* A testing feature of some sort would be nice, to allow for some sort of beta
testing.
* Consider having PagedTiffHandler call VipsScaler to do the scaling, to reduce
code duplication and to get sharpening support in PagedTiffHandler.

[Bug 31472] Android app menu buttons are sometimes all/mostly grayed out

2011-10-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31472

--- Comment #2 from Brion Vibber 2011-10-11 22:11:48 UTC
---
I would strongly recommend that at least totally independent top-level actions
like 'bookmarks', 'history', 'nearby', and 'settings' either always be
available, or be removed from the menu when they're not reachable.

Compare with the stock Android browser app -- when you go into the Bookmarks or
History views, you get a different menu with only items that are relevant to
that view. ('Bookmark last viewed page', 'List options' for Bookmarks and
'Clear History' for History).

It's a lot clearer that way that to get to other parts of the app you'll have
to exit from the specialized view.

this happens depending on which view you are on.

for example if you are in the view all bookmarks - everything except for
history is disabled.

if you are in the view history - everything except the view all bookmarks is
disabled.

we can easily modify it so that all items are enabled in all views if that is
the desired behavior.

[Bug 31460] Hardware search button not wired to actually search

2011-10-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon

added the soft keyboard plugin:
https://github.com/nitobi/Wikipedia/commit/7e6102775d85864cae51b61b7aa4e7875ac927b1

when pressing the search button the keyboard will display, when the user types
in the keyboard the characters & cursor then appear in the input field.

the cursor doesn't appear in the input field if the hardware search button is
pressed and the user doesn't enter any characters with the keyboard.

still need to determine why the cursor isn't appearing when the focus() method
is called.

[Bug 28850] Save categories on "Next" even if they weren't explicitly added

2011-10-11 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28850

--- Comment #26 from Gregor Hagedorn 2011-10-11
21:35:41 UTC ---
My Summary: Many people and Wikipedia communities agree that the bug should be
fixed. A patch exists, but it is not applied because the original developer has
a different view of good user interfaces. I would wish we could bring this to
some conflict resolution mechanim - perhaps WMF could apply to an external web
user interface design expert?

Should we encourage everyone we know to vote on this bug -- perhaps if MANY
people to vote it gets attention?
