Greetings,

There does not appear to be local consensus, but feel free to discuss that
here. If you want to discuss this on the merits, please go to
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Limits_to_configuration_changes#Disconnection_from_stewards_overseeing
so that we can have discussions on this in a centralized location.

 Bug #: 35294
   Summary: byteLimit cannot be set to two objects in one call
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.19
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Javascript

r110209 sets the following line

$( '#wpReason, #wpNewTitleMain' ).byteLimit();

but that adds the maxlength of #wpNewTitleMain (255) also to #wpReason and the
own maxlength of #wpReason (200) is not used. When #wpNewTitleMain is removed
from dom before the above line is executed, the line adds -1 to #wpReason,
which break at least Opera 11 (you cannot input anything in #wpReason).

Please fix byteLimit to handle the maxLenght of each id seperatly. Thanks.

How in the name of god did you figured that out? Perhaps you're talking about
some meta limit, which does not directly applies to ro.wp. There is currently
no limit to the number of votes needed to be appointed on ro.wp.

With all due respect, but the ability to deadministrate users should be
reserved for stewards and bureaucrats on big wikis with many administrators
like enwiki and dewiki. I count 25 administrators on rowiki (

Actually, I was looking for an extra permission on [[Special:ListGroupRights]]
due to a discussion. I saw that one forgot the 'a' of the
'abusefilter-hide-log' permissions for 'oversight'(ers) (just
'busefilter-hide-log') in InitialiseSettings.php (I guess it has been set in
InitialiseSettings.php).

Cheers,

Taking in consideartion the lack of projects-wide policy, and the reticences of
people to open such a policy (cf. bug ), I doubt we can say "the ability to
deadministrate users should be
reserved for stewards and bureaucrats on big wikis with many administrators".

I was thinking of an API to embed wiki articles/infobox to external sites.
Maybe it can be done using oembed but I am not sure if I can do it as I am new
to Mediawiki.Let me know if I can help.

[Bug 851] when viewing an old version of a page, use old version of templates

2012-03-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=851

--- Comment #13 from mybugs.m...@gmail.com 2012-03-18 13:20:47 UTC ---
>From Bug 35066:

Suppose on June 2004, a user read the article "President of the United States",
and wanted to cite the information available on the graphical timeline which is
shown there.
The recommended way to do so, is to use a "permanent" link, like this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=President_of_the_United_States&oldid=4317639#Graphical_Timeline

It is not rare that the content of some tables, timelines, and so on are
defined inside of templates.
And this is exactly the case in the above example.
As you can verify, the timeline was added on this change:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=President_of_the_United_States&diff=prev&oldid=4317639
which included the content of the first version of the timeline (dated from 27
June 2004):
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Timeline_US_Presidents_2&oldid=4303810&diff=prev

Now, here is the problem: for someone which reads in 2012 the content of the
work which cited that old version of the article, the "permanent link" will
show a page from 2004 saying that Barack Obama would be president on 2009!
In other words, old version of the pages transcludes the newer version of the
templates, which makes the 2004 version of the article to contain the 2012
version of the timeline, not the one from 2004!

This behavior is bad not only for citations, but also for people trying to
navigate through old discussions.
E.g.: if someone is trying to understand why the formatting of some template
was changed, or how it evolved to its current form, it is possible he/she will
find a discussion in which at some point one editor transcluded the template
(when e.g. it had a red text somewhere), and the talk may be completely out of
context (because the current version has no red text at all).

(A similar and more difficult problem happens with magic words. E.g.:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:About&diff=prev&oldid=292419185
shows the revision as of 11:32, 26 May 2009, but it has information which is
from 8 March 2012, such as the number of articles, and the software version.
But I don't think this one would be feasible, since the value of these things
depend a lot more on the state of the wiki database at a given time.)

Since a while I enabled a semi-automated reporting of a very heavily used
script on WikimediCommons.

The user has the possibility to press a button to post the error message to a
list of those.

Now, after about 1 month there are 4 reported (this means that this occurs much
more often) errors:

API request returned code 200 parsererror. Error code is SyntaxError:
JSON.parse: Parsed string contains more than single value: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:AjaxQuickDelete.js/auto-errors
for new entries with "API request returned code" (I could make a separate page
for server errors, if you want or send them with JSONP to a
health-status-server.
It's a page you can learn a lot from: E.g. "API request failed (hookaborted):
The modification you tried to make was aborted by an extension hook" is a very
bad error-message. User has to guess which hook of the the thousands.)

Probably MW core that is at "fault"

Why would you need to do many logins in a short period, from the same IP? Cache
your cookies and use them

$result['wait'] = intval( $wgPasswordAttemptThrottle['seconds'] );

yeah... $page->getMessageGroup() can return null

I was going to add

return false;
}

but with the error handling as

if ( !$page ) {
var_dump( $this->params );
var_dump( $title );
throw new MWException( "Oops, this should not happen!" );
}

just above it...

I agree that this is a bug that should be fixed. I also didn't like that the
title of the diff page is the same as of the page itself.

Patch 10238 looks good to me functionally, but:
* wfMessage() is better than wfMsg(), see
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_messages_API
* setPageTitle() would be better inside showDiffPage()
* Documentation for the new message must be added in MessagesQqq.php. Please
mention that it's the title of the HTML page.
* Please consider adding the message to MessagesAs.php, too :)

And where does it stop? It's a wiki. There are always improvements that can be
made. Closed means closed. Nobody should be editing these wikis.

That isn't what's happening. There was no libel being removed or anything of
that nature. The wikis are closed. I'm not sure what's ambiguous here.

Stewards are required to abide by consensus. The consensus has been to close
these wikis. Some of the edits look like they're automated (editing every
Wikimedia wiki), which is a bit more forgivable given that the software doesn't
currently stop stewards from editing closed wikis. But in some cases, stewards
are actively (manually) editing wikis that are closed. This should not be
happening. The wikis are closed.

Ideally you would be able to trust the stewards to simply not use this power,
but that doesn't seem to be enough here. There's a bug that has changed the
meaning from "closed" to "mostly closed." This bug should be fixed.

Status: NEW

The DNSBL related settings are broken.

If you're detected as being blacklisted, the following happens:

$this->mBlockedby = wfMsg( 'sorbs' );
$this->mBlockreason = wfMsg(
'sorbsreason' );

However, the actual methods to see if your blocked look for $this->mBlock being
a real block object. Hence you're not actually blocked.

Not sure what the cleanest solution would be. either change relavent methods of
user to not look for $this->mBlock, or introduce a new FakeBlock class for
cases where the user doesn't have a block in db, but is blocked.

You will surely agree bugzilla is the place to ask for the implementation of
consensus or to notify mediawiki's bugs.

Your objection doesn't involve any mediawiki's bug but it's a decision needing
consensus. Nothing prevents you from opening a rfc on meta to ask for the
removal of editing rights for stewards on closed wikis.

Actually I think you're simply saying most of edits done by stewards on closed
wikis are useless...but that's another matter.

2012-03-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35302

--- Comment #7 from Marco Aurelio  2012-03-18 17:36:36 UTC ---
There is no bug, just a matter of userrights. Stewards have the 'edit' right
via the CentralAuth groups. If we removed it we wouldn't be able to edit closed
wikis but we are not removing it because we *need* to edit closed wikis from
time to time and to perform other kind of operations.

FYI stewards are not the only ones that have that right: system administrators
and staff members have it too. The right was given to us by Tim Starling
because we needed it and we still need it.

There's no bug here, just a personal opinion; and nothing that needs bugzilla
at all.

How do you interpret "closed"? What level of editing is acceptable on closed
wikis?

If some kind of critical edit is needed on these closed wikis, have it removed
from closed.dblist temporarily. I can't imagine you'd need to do this more than
once or twice a year. If there's evidence that this ability is needed more
often, please share. The edits I've seen have nothing to do with libel or legal
issues, they're simply stewards editing sites that are supposed to not be
edited.

I'd definitely support FakeBlock, probably as an abstract class that can be
implemented as SorbsFakeBlock, or TorFakeBlock, etc. The connection between
the new Block stuff and the old User code is still pretty ugly in trunk...

So, as I already said, you're mixing two problems, the idea of closed wikis
that are still edited and alleged abuses of edit right by stewards.

Most of your thoughts are reasonable, but this is not a matter of bugzilla.
Actually stewards themselves can remove edit right on closed wikis.

I'm closing this bug, feel free to propose a policy, on meta, about editing on
closed wikis.

I agree the most recent edits I made to fulfill a request on Meta weren't
necessary and have declined to do the remainder of them after consulting with
other stewards. But, given that closed wikis are still being updated to the
newest version of the software, there will be other kinds of cleanup edits
needed to maintain the presentation of historical materials.

Actually, stewards should make themselves administrators to edit closed wikis.
They need to make themselves check users or oversighters to perform queries and
to hide revisions. On the one hand this should be the same for closed wikis, on
the other hand I think it's the Wikimedia Staff's decision. If they say
stewards often need to edit closed wikis and it's okay for them if they can't
see everything stewards do, then it's okay if stewards can keep their edit
permission.

Interpretation of a word may be different from person to person, but policy
tells me that your interpretation is wrong.

[[m:Closing projects policy]] defines closing a wiki as 'locking its database
so that it cannot be edited by anyone except stewards'. As Vito says feel free
to open a discussion on Meta.

And seems the issue you picked out is whether the edits themselves were
appropriate, not the ability to edit itself.

On a technical level, closed really ought to mean closed. I don't understand
why allowing a user with the "edit" right overrides the wiki being listed in
closed.dblist. That seems like simply wrong behavior.

I don't disagree with the idea that sometimes you might have to edit the closed
wikis, I just feel that doing so should require the wiki being temporarily
being removed from closed.dblist and then edited and then re-added to
closed.dblist. Sometimes a little bureaucracy is an effective rate limiter.

You're absolutely right that some of this is more at a wiki policy
(non-technical) level, though. Maybe I'll start a discussion at Meta-Wiki, but
it's going to me discussing with active Meta-Wiki users (which is primarily...
the stewards), so I'm not sure how much it's worth my time. :-)

Afaik wikis are closed just removing the edit rights from all local usergroups,
as stewards we have these rights embedded into our global group. Btw this
"hack" seems to be the easiest way to close a WMF wiki.

[Bug 35302] Stewards able to edit closed wikis

--- Comment #15 from MZMcBride  2012-03-18 19:10:31 UTC ---
Just as I have nowhere else to really note it, I'll leave a comment here.

One of the quirks of the current system is apparently that stewards have to
find someone to create a local account for them on the closed wikis if the
steward never made one before the wiki was closed.

There are a lot of aspects of this situation at both a technical and policy
level that are unclear or wrong. Oh well.

[Bug 22724] Localization of custom editintro messages

The patch is functionally OK. I don't see how it is a bad hack.

It is, however, very local: Reviewing it made me realize that currently the
editintro system is, in general, used in a very strange way. Unless i'm missing
something, in the core it can only be used naturally for a custom intro when
adding talk page sections. For everything else really weird hacks are needed;
for an example see function addEditIntro in
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.js.

What would be really useful is to redo the editintro system so it would be
useful without weird hacks.

For this particular issue using a hook, as Neil suggests, would probably be
better.

[Bug 35306] New: Global (to a wiki farm or family) message delivery (thoughts)

2012-03-18 Thread bugzilla-daemon

 Bug #: 35306
   Summary: Global (to a wiki farm or family) message delivery

   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal

ReportedBy: b...@mzmcbride.com

I currently run a bot (EdwardsBot) that handles global message delivery:
. I'm not sure how
sustainable this situation is, particularly as Wikimedia staff are now relying
on this system more and more to communicate to groups of wiki users.

I'm filing this bug as I'd like there to be some general thought for the best
way of doing something like this (in an extension, perhaps? on Wikimedia labs?
or a Toolserver tool with a user interface and real logging?). And is something
like this needed at other wiki farms? Perhaps an extension could provide
different delivery methods (or allow users to control how they want a message
delivered, ideally). Or you could have streams that users can subscribe to,
maybe?

There should also be some general thought about whether this is the right
approach at all. Updating a bunch of wiki pages has benefits (there's an
archive, there's an associated e-mail notification, etc.) but it also has
detriments (decentralizing the message, slow to deliver, waste of resources,
e-mail notifications don't contain the actual message, watchlist and
RecentChanges flooding, etc.). Perhaps there are better tools to achieve the
underlying goal (e-mail?)? Or maybe talk pages are best (and will be better
with LiquidThreads). It all needs thought.

And then there are general issues of who should be able to deliver to who and
when consent is needed and all of that. Lots of thought needed!

It's probably best to keep it as a user talk thing for simplicity unless
there's a strong argument to the contrary. An extension could maintain user
lists based on geographic area, on-wiki projects, and anything else as well as
an opt-out list per-sender and globally. The actual delivery could be
attributed to the actual sender without flooding recent changes by simply
skipping the RC feed. Maintain a log for the extension and post that log to RC,
and then post the actual edits to each user talk page asynchronously without
adding to the RC feed.

Because the bug appeared just after MediaWiki was upgraded, I suppose I'm not
the only one user which experiences such things. It's not only an end user
problem, but a java script/ mediawiki conflict.
