If you are in hurry and don't wait for ULS, there are already few language
selectors that accept languages in all languages, one in Kieli and one in
Incubator extensions.

--- Comment #3 from Laurence 'GreenReaper' Parry

The fix for this appears to cause a couple of PHP Notices (at least on 1.17.5):

Notice: Undefined variable: userlang in [..]/includes/SkinTemplate.php on line
327
Notice: Undefined variable: userdir in [..]/includes/SkinTemplate.php on line
328

This is on a Russian-language wiki with my user language set to English.

The lines concerned are intended to set the lang and dir attributes . . .

$lang = $wgLang->getCode();
$dir  = $wgLang->getDir();
if ( $lang !== $wgContLang->getCode() || $dir !== $wgContLang->getDir() ) {
  $escUserlang = htmlspecialchars( $userlang );   << HERE
  $escUserdir = htmlspecialchars( $userdir ); << HERE
  // Attributes must be in double quotes because htmlspecialchars() doesn't
  // escape single quotes
  $attrs = " lang=\"$escUserlang\" dir=\"$escUserdir\"";
  $tpl->set( 'userlangattributes', $attrs );

It looks like $lang and $dir were renamed to $userlang and $userdir in 1.18;
the patch for 1.17 should be corrected to refer to $lang and $dir.

Why don't you do this with js completely... I mean if you want to make it as
good as possible then make it ajax and if you want to make it ajax you kinda
need js... jquery takes care of 90% of the individual browser bugs and even
so, this is simple and even IE should be able to take care of this... I can
give some code for this if needed.

In order to engage users to contribute productively to Wikipedia, we would like
to automatically send a notification to registered users with an email address,
whenever their feedback post is featured, marked as resolved, or marked as
helpful by at least 3 users (with at least 50% found helpful).

This automated notification would only be sent via email using the same method
that we now use to send oversight requests to oversighters.

This notice would only be sent once per post for each of the conditions above.

This ticket is intended to research the feasibility of this request, as well as
estimate development time. If we can fit it in this release, we will specify
exact messages to be sent.

It is likely that this feature will be pushed to the next release, but we
wanted to have it here for the record, since this is such an important feature
for editors engagement.

Created attachment 10747
  --> https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=10747
Mockup of Feedback Page with a sample IPv6 post

To avoid displaying excessively long IPv6 addresses in the limited space in the
first line of each post, we propose to list them on a second line, in smaller
text font, as shown in the attached mockup from Pau Giner.

The copy would read as follows:

"A reader found what they were looking for 8 hours ago | Details
Posted anonymously from 103.222.212.123"

The attached mockup features 2 posts combining one registered and one
unregistered users to show how posts fit together.

This will prevent lines from wrapping over in the first line, which will create
ugly displays and confuse users.

To make up for the lost space, let's plan to remove some of the extra white
space between the end of the comment and the helpful/flag buttons for iPv6
posts, as proposed in the mockup.

[Bug 37434] OH-AFT - "Learn more" links on actions need to link to the help materials

2012-06-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37434

--- Comment #1 from Fabrice Florin  2012-06-14 01:44:29
UTC ---
Thanks, Srikanth Logic, for submitting this bug!

AFT Team members, here are the action items we discussed for solving this bug:

1. Add this short anchor name for all monitoring tool questions that have a
flyout and 'Learn more' link:
- feature
- resolve
- hide
- oversight-request
- oversight-decline
- oversight
- unfeature
- unresolve
- unhide
- unoversight-request
- unoversight-decline
- unoversight

This will be done collaboratively by Oliver and Pau, as they update the Help
pages.

2. Update the 'Learn more' code to append these anchor names with a hashtag
after each Help page URL, as so:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_Feedback/Help/Editors#feature

The code should be written so that no matter which user group you belong to,
you get the correct link to the relevant question for your group's Help page.

Note that we are supporting 4 different Help pages, one for each major user
group:

* Reader Help page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_Feedback/Help

 * Editor Help page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_Feedback/Help/Editors

 * Monitor Help page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_Feedback/Help/Monitors

* Oversighter Help page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Article_Feedback/Help/Oversighters

The code change would be done either by Matthias Mullie or OmniTI, as they
determine.

Thanks, Sumana and Matthias.

I created a separate ticket in Article Feedback that is dependent on this one,
so we can track that bug our AFT bug list, which we use for task management.

Andrew, please let us know if you can take care of that change in coming days,
so we can try deploying it again next Tuesday, June 19.

I marked it as a high priority, because it's a blocker for us at Article
Feedback.

Thank you!

[Bug 37579] New: Article Feedback - Default Warning Message for Abuse Filter

2012-06-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37579

 Bug #: 37579
   Summary: Article Feedback - Default Warning Message for Abuse
Filter
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: AbuseFilter
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: fflo...@wikimedia.org
CC: agarr...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

This ticket is dependent on Abuse Filter Bug 37561 - Make it possible to have
differing default warning messages.

Andrew Garrett posted a revision for that feature on Gerrit:
https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/10394/

But it didn't pass code review, there are 2 minor issues that need fixing.

Once that ticket has been fixed and deployed, we will need to test that it
works for Article Feedback, and make any modifications that may be needed to
make sure the proper message is displayed for feedback warnings.

A search for Dateiverschieber

should find [[commons:MediaWiki:RenameRequest.js]]

But it does not. Similarly for other query strings. The word is on that page
since at least three months.

It works for other, even older pages.

[Bug 37575] New: Syntax error in SPARQL INSERT/DELETE DATA requests when default graph not set

 Bug #: 37575
   Summary: Syntax error in SPARQL INSERT/DELETE DATA requests
when default graph not set
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Semantic MediaWiki
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: jeen.broeks...@gmail.com
CC: jeroen_ded...@yahoo.com, mar...@semantic-mediawiki.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

INSERT DATA and DELETE DATA requests generated by SMW_SparqlDatabase.php have
illegal syntax when the default graph is not set: they have double curly
brackets around the data:

 INSERT DATA {{ ... }}

Here is a fix for the insertData function:

public function insertData( $triples, $extraNamespaces = array() ) {
if ( $this->m_dataEndpoint !== '' ) {
$turtle = self::getPrefixString( $extraNamespaces, false ) .
$triples;
return $this->doHttpPost( $turtle );
} else {
$sparql = self::getPrefixString( $extraNamespaces, true ) .
"INSERT DATA { " .
( ( $this->m_defaultGraph !== '' )? "GRAPH
<{$this->m_defaultGraph}> { " : '' ) .
" $triples } ";
// close extra curly bracket for graph clause
   ( ( $this->m_defaultGraph !== '' )? " } " : " ";
return $this->doUpdate( $sparql );
}
}

Same should work for deleteData as well. I have not verified if this same
problem occurs anywhere else.

Moodbar Response Workflow Diagram

This new feature will enable editors to reply to registered users who post
article feedback that deserves a response -- such as praise or thanks for a
useful suggestion.

It will be based in part on the existing Moodbar Dashboard feature that enables
the same functionality for feedback by new editors about their experience on
Wikipedia. This feature was developed in part by Benny Situ, who can provide
guidance on how to adapt it for Article Feedback.

A workflow diagram is attached to show how the Moodbar Response feature works
now. An experienced editor clicks on 'Respond' below a feedback post, which
opens a response panel where they can add a comment. They can then preview and
send that response to the new editor. By default, this response is posted as a
new section on the new editor's talk page. If the new editor has an email
address, that response is also emailed to them as a notification.

Our goal for article feedback is to provide the same functionality to any
logged-in editor, for any post by a registered user. A second mockup is
attached to show how we might integrate this in the feedback page, by showing a
'Reply' icon and text link next to 'Flag as abuse' on the bottom line below any
post from a registered user.

This 'Reply' link would not be shown if you are not a logged-in editor, and
would not be shown either if the post is from an anonymous, unregistered user.

[Bug 35979] "Rangy not supported in your browser. Reason: Neither Range nor TextRange are implemented"

Roan: There are a couple of Chrome plugins I've heard of that use Rangy, so
it's possible.

Regardless of the specifics of this bug for MediaWiki, it's a general problem
for Rangy. A minor oversight in KHTML's Range implementation is responsible for
the error message, so I will be fixing Rangy to be less pedantic. The bug is

[Bug 36773] Article Feedback - My Contributions

Fabrice Florin  changed:

   What|Removed |Added

   Priority|Normal  |High

--- Comment #4 from Fabrice Florin  2012-06-13 23:32:38
UTC ---
Thanks, Matthias, glad you were able to make such good progress on this. The
prototype screenshot looks great.

Here is an example of my recommended wording for the AFT entries on the My
Contributions page for an individual user:

21:19, 6 June 2012 . . (+95)‎ . . Feedback on  ‎(This
article needs more audio and video clips of the bird's song.) . . Status:
Positive - Featured

Here's what it looks like in pseudo-code:

 . . (character count) .. Feedback on (comment, if any) . . Status: [found what you were
looking for? Positive|Negative|Neutral] -
[Helpful|Flagged|Featured|Resolved|Hidden|Oversight Requested|Oversighted]

This is very similar to what you have now in the prototype, but I propose using
the 'Feedback on' label first, so that people can see right away that this is a
feedback post rather than an edit. I also recommend using the article name by
itself, instead of the complicated path name for the feedback page, which is
not meaningful to average users.

If it's easy to do, I propose adding status information, based on whether or
not they found what they were looking for -- and whether or not the feedback
was found helpful (50% helpful or more), flagged, featured, resolved, hidden,
oversight-requested or oversighted. If any of these requests are impractical in
this time-frame, we can postpone them to later.

Lastly, it is important that the text of the comment be replaced with '(hidden
comment)' if the feedback was hidden, oversight-requested or oversighted.

We are likely to soon merge wikitech.wikimedia.org into
labsconsole.wikimedia.org. labsconsole will take on the wikitech domain name.
It'll then be able to use the *.wikimedia.org certificate. We'll make a static
off-site version of wikitech called wikitech-mirror.wikimedia.org. We'll get a
certificate for that.

We won't be renewing this certificate, so we'll leave this unresolved for now.

it's slower to patrol, as they've to check plenty of void/duplicated edits.

May be applicable somehow (did not dig into it) - however, using pd-old tags

[Bug 37573] New: Addition of CU logs to list of user links in Special:Contributions

2012-06-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37573

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 37573
   Summary: Addition of CU logs to list of user links in
Special:Contributions
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: trivial
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: william.wiki.ad...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

It would be welcomed to update the list of links concerning the target user
which one sees via Special:Contributions, that are (for me, as an en.wiki
admin/crat/cu/os):

(talk | block | block log | uploads | logs | deleted user contributions | user
rights management | rename user | oversighted contribs | filter log | check
user IP addresses)

I would like to see the addition of a link to Special:CheckUserLog, showing the
given user as the target in the CU logs, e.g.:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CheckUserLog?cuSearchType=target&cuSearch=WilliamH

This would be much better than having to click "check user IP addresses", copy
the target username, click on "Go to CheckUserLog", paste it in there, and
click submit. There is a link to see the user's oversighted contributions, but
that is an extension which has not been used for 18 months; in contrast,
Checkuser is used dozens of times a day, but this equivalent functionality from
the contributions page is lacking. Adding this simple link will amend that.

Best,

WH

[Bug 33464] Add "Developer" or "API" link to footer of Wikimedia wikis

(In reply to comment #1)
> There's a Powered by MediaWiki button already.

Yes, that's true. I'm not sure how that's relevant here, though. "Powered by
MediaWiki" shows users what software is being run and gives a little
publicity/promotion to the wiki software.

In this bug, we're talking about a link to a developer or API portal/help
page/something where end users can get involved with the data from the project
they're viewing. That's a substantial difference in purpose, in my view.

[Bug 37570] New: [SF] Enable parser functions and magic words in {{{for template|...}}} form parameter to allow distributed template job queue management

2012-06-13 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37570

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 37570
   Summary: [SF] Enable parser functions and magic words in {{{for
template|...}}} form parameter to allow distributed
template job queue management
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: SemanticForms
AssignedTo: yaro...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: fastgoldf...@gmail.com
CC: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

One use case for parser functions and magic words in the {{{for template|...}}}
form parameter, is distributed template job queue management with automatic
template selection and distribution by a Semantic Form. When a high-usage
template is edited, it dominates the MediaWiki job queue for days or weeks,
sometimes more.

The simple solution to this problem is to create several identical versions of
the same template, each with a different number. Then, when edits need to be
made, the template changes can be rolled out gradually to all the identical
templates. While the job queue is processing each numbered template, other jobs
can get into the queue before the next template is edited.

This also improves testing of template changes, because errors do not affect
the entire site, and repeat changes to the same template do not further clog
the job queue. About 30 numbered, identical templates can be used for MediaWiki
sites up to about the 100,000 page level.

For that to work in page creation with Semantic Forms, the template to be used
for each page creation needs to be selected randomly, like this:

{{{for template|Some template {{#rand: 1 | 30 }} }}}

That does not work yet, so the workaround is to use a specific template number
that is only used for page creation, like this:

{{{for template|Some template 0 }}}

Then, Extension:ReplaceText can find the string "Some template 0" and replace
it with "Some template {{subst:#rand: 1 | 30 }}" to change all the "0"
templates to random 1 to 30 templates.

Only one form is required for the creation of pages in both the enhancement
request scenario, and the workaround scenario.

However, editing of pages in the workaround scenario requires distribution of
numbered forms to match the distributed numbered templates. To eliminate the
need for matching distributed forms, the enhancement request form could be
allowed to randomly select a template each time the page is edited. I think
that would be acceptable given the overall benefits of template distribution,
but I'm not sure if that is an efficient use of MediaWiki resources.

To improve it, I suspect it would be possible for Semantic Forms to be aware of
the template distribution strategy, perhaps by explicitly defining the
available templates with a new Semantic Forms parameter. Then, SF could detect
which template is in use, and then reuse the same template without any "this
page does not use this form" errors.

But that would be a convenience, not a requirement, for template distribution
once the enhancement is implemented to allow parser functions in the "For
template" parameter.

The Monuments DB APi is currently run from the toolserver
(toolserver.org/~erfgoed/api/api.php?format=json), and should be moved to
somewhere auxiliary on the production cluster before WLM this year. This is the
tracking bug for deploying that to production.

[Bug 10551] Auto-pagination : dividing long articles into virtual pages

I have succeeded in doing this using Semantic MediaWiki and the
Special:RunQuery ephemeral page provided by Semantic Forms. Here's an example:

http://www.coincompendium.com/w/index.php/Special:RunQuery/Sighting_list?&wpRunQuery=true

Yaron was dismissive of the benefits of ephemeral pages provided by Semantic
Forms, but you can read numerous examples of how they can be used, in bug
34150. None of those involve advertising. I think this enhancement request by
j...@typhon.org has merit.

It is now partly handled by subpages, but more flexible ways of paginating
would be substantial forward progress in the capability of MediaWiki, even
without SMW and SF.

Populating red-linked pages automatically exposes IP addresses of unregistered
site users by creating the pages with their account, even when anonymous
editing is disabled in LocalSettings.php as follows:

# Disable anonymous editing when set to "false"

$wgGroupPermissions['*']['edit'] = false;

Contrary to what we thought, this attribute is not set to the content language
code, but to whatever the intended language code is.

If whatever preference (or uselang= query parameter value) is not of a
supported language, the interface falls back to the default (English) but the
value here does not.

There's no way to delegate create-project rights to only specifically named
repositories. Resolving LATER pending some rather big upstream changes that
would be needed (and analytics has project creators now)

There's nothing special about any of the repositories. Looking at all of their

SelectTag has a minor issue (SelectTag.tag bogus repo), but that's been worked
