CC-ing Ryan Lane.

Note that until the SSL cluster is expanded and more stable, this must *not*
happen at the Squid level, or any other level for that matter.

Right now the plan (afaik) is:
* Keep testing and allow natural usage increase by word of mouth
* Increase SSL cluster
* Enable for logged-in users by default
*
* ...
* Enable for everybody by default (?)
* ... (?)
* Increase SSL cluster ++ ++ ++
* Send HSTS and thus force all modern browsers to use HTTPS unconditionally.
This would probably require most servers to have SSL on them internally,
instead of the current situation in which we have a couple of SSL proxies that
fetch from the protocol-relative (HTTP) squids.

[Bug 38280] Implement mw.Api convenience method for loading interface messages

2012-07-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Summary|Gettings messages via   |Implement mw.Api
   |JavaScript  |convenience method for
   ||loading interface messages

--- Comment #1 from Krinkle  2012-07-20 04:01:04 UTC ---
Changing bug to be a low-priority enhancement, because it is currently already
possible. Just not with a single function call.

* mw.messages is designed with dynamic loading in mind, this is used all the
time whenever a module is loaded from the server through mw.loader.
* mw.Api supports making your own queries, should we add a custom method for
every single api method if the plain callee is straight forward with only 5
lines of code?
* Aside from mw.Api, $.getJSON is also available with a few more lines of code.

Example of how to do this directly:

var api = new mw.Api();
api.get({
action: 'query',
meta: 'allmessages',
ammessages: msgKeys.join('|'),
amlang: mw.config.get('wgUserLanguage')
}).done( function (data) {
if ( data && data.query && data.query.allmessages ) {
$.each(data.query.allmessages, function (i, obj) {
if (obj['*']) {
mw.messages.set(obj.name, obj['*']);
}
});
}
});

If you'd like to implement an mw.Api utility method to make this easier, you're
welcome to provide a patch. A few pointers:
* Provide a patch instead of a partial snippet of a file. Assuming you have a
local checkout of the mediawiki/core.git repository. Use `git checkout -b
js-api-messages`. Then make the local changes, then use `git diff` to see the
patch. To store it in a file use `git diff > mw-bug-38280.patch` and attach it
to this ticket.
* Leave the mw.messages.set part out of it, so that the method is generally
useful for getting messages. It would call the callback with an object
containing key/value pairs. So that in consuming code it would look like this:

-- dependencies => 'mediawiki.api.allmessages'
var api = new mw.Api();
api.allmessages( ['monday', 'tuesday', 'friday'] ).done( mw.messages.set );

Interesting, the 2nd solution sounds like the better solution in this case
keeping in mind the way messages are loaded and parsed. Also note that the
client side parser does support parser functions in general (e.g. it has logic
for detecting them, this is used for {{GRAMMAR:}} and {{PLURAL:}}).

Changing to be an 'enhancement' instead of a bug, as the status quo is that
that is not supported on the client, so messages intended for client-side use
should not contain these in the first case as they were never supported in the
past either.

Renaming bug to be more specific. "Sorts wrong" is not helpful and not
realistically fixable as it would have to cover all past and future bugs ever
with sorting in jquery.tablesorter.

If there are other cases than the one I described, please create separate bugs.

I expect we will need some tweaks for deletion etc. but the basics should very
similar. Patrolling alone is worth the install even if the other pieces don't

--- Comment #1 from bs...@wikimedia.org 2012-07-19 23:36:39 UTC ---
Patrol log is for logging page patrolled via special:newpages. When the new
tool marks a page as reviewed, it will also attempt to mark the page as
patrolled in special:newpages. There are some cases that a page only exists in
the new tool, for example, a page gets moved from user namespace to article
namespace. In that case, the action would not be in patrol log since there is
no action taken in special:newpages.

Sounds like we need a log for the new tool like review log or something

One of the most frequently received feedbacks about the mobile app is that it
only searches in one language. To switch to a different language the user must
leave go to the preferences. It happens to me all the time, because I use three
languages; I know the app well and it annoys me quite a bit, and a lot of users
don't know how to use the preferences.

A more cleverly designed search interface or language selector will be probably
implemented in the future, but in the meantime the following simple solution
can be implemented: a link saying "search in another language" can appear in
the search results, somewhere near "show more results".

We don't use the traditional Android 1/2.x menu button in WLMMobile (at least

display of the menu button on the side of the button bar at bottom/right of

If we're not going to use it, we should adjust the manifest so that this
doesn't get shown.

[Bug 28419] Replace MD5 password hashing with WHIRLPOOL

2012-07-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28419

--- Comment #56 from Daniel Friesen
2012-07-19 21:41:45 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #43)
> But why the separation? For any password hashing algorithm, compare(hash,
> password) === (hash == crypt(password)), assuming crypt is passed the proper
> options.

- A hash == crypt(password) ends up comparing parameters (unnecessarily) at a
serialized text level. It's much cleaner and consistent to do compare a direct
hash of the password. We want format flexibility so using compare() lets the
crypt implementation extract the hash instead of the outside code making
assumptions about the structure.
- While it's true that historically `compare(password, hash) = hash ==
crypt(password, params)` there's no strict reason why that needs to be the
case. It's perfectly reasonable for a password implementation to output
something that won't pass strict equality but will be comparable to the
internal implementation. (In fact I think I could see someone trying to do that
using some form of crypto.
- The separation of crypt() and compare() also helps keep implementation clean.
- The crypt(password, hash) == hash pattern is also not an intuitive one.
Outside code implementing the comparison has to do verbose things it should not
need to do. And it's not the kind of thing a programmer expects to do. This
style of handling additionally adds extra burden to the crypt() implementation
itself that doesn't even need to be there.

IIRC overall it was a result of the goal to keep implementation and usage
intuitive. If you take a look at the differences in code you'll notice that the
 actual implementation of Password_TypeA has barely any code in it at all. This
keeps actual password implementations directly focused on what they actually
NEED to do. Not bogged down with irrelevant trivialities that get in the way of
making sure that the password implementation is correct.

SVG is supported in most modern browsers. The rasterization method used for
svg's in mediawiki is unnecessary and lower quality that simply scaling the svg
size.

Please add support for native svg and thumbnails.

I suspect this could be done as a customized Language class that applies
transformations; by just using it for user language there would be no worries
about bad data formats for internal configuration.

Horizontal lines in the monuments list vary between one and two physical

Expect similar with Nexus One and Nexus S.

This appears to be very resolved. mw.Uri now handles multiple arguments as an

message that says something about more-PHP-like array handling.

[Bug 28419] Replace MD5 password hashing with WHIRLPOOL

--- Comment #55 from Tyler Romeo  2012-07-19 19:47:23 UTC

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/16049

A pluggable password system that doesn't rely entirely on static functions.
Hash algorithm sub-classes need only implement four functions: a function that
identifies if a given hash is an instance of that type, a function that
extracts parameters from a hash (or gives defaults), a crypt(), and a testing
function that returns test vectors for PHPUnit.

The patch completely replaces User::crypt and User::comparePasswords by
replacing the User::$mPassword and User::$mNewpassword properties with Password
objects. All comparisons take place using member methods.

--- Comment #4 from Philippe Beaudette  2012-07-19

Checkuser wiki helps once you've identified a long term vandal. But without
logs, you lose any info on what that vandal has done in the past, until it's
manually moved to the Checkuser wiki. So losing the logs would lose some of
the historical data that's rich for predicting how they operate.

With that said, I think MZ's initial comment here is not off base. Personally,
I'd be fine with truncating the data somehow, but I'm not the primary user of
that tool: checkusers and stewards are. Particularly for smaller wikis, we
should retain the logs for some time, but I don't think ther'es a need to
retain them indefinitely.

I"m going to chat with LCA's lawyers and see where they fall on the question.

[Bug 37626] CheckUser log indefinitely retains private information

--- Comment #3 from Marc A. Pelletier  2012-07-19 18:27:22

The CheckUser wiki serves the need of retaining long-term data for persistent
vandals; the logs really only should be used for auditing purposes. (For one
thing, it's not always clear whether an IP check following a name check truly
is related, and the absence of the result and context make using logs for
anything else but auditing fraught with dangers).

Aha; so it's just the delete/restore issue. It's definitely a bug, not a
feature, really. Only admins can delete and only admins can restore, so if the
issue is "what if someone deletes a new article, then it comes back, and now it
isn't going to be patrolled by anyone" - the admin will have reviewed it on
both deletion and restore.

[Bug 38484] Parsoid: When Parsoid is used (e.g. for VisualEditor), MediaWiki has a dependency on a non-PHP service to work

2012-07-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #2 from Gabriel Wicke  2012-07-19 18:18:42

Our plan is to port Parsoid to a C library and interface it to PHP as an
extension and (for shared hosting) as a near-static binary following Tim's
strategy for Lua. We have some issues to address in the JS implementation
before we embark on that, so don't expect that to happen before October.

We could later also port Parsoid to pure PHP, but PHP's less-than-stellar
performance for memory-heavy workloads would make this only useful for very
small wikis. See
http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/u32/performance.php?test=binarytrees for a
fun memory-heavy benchmark.

"Also, any article that is deleted and then restored reappears in the

If a user creates a new article, deletes the article then restores it. The new
article will get away with Special:NewPages. We try to capture it in the new

I wound up rewriting both patches: the API one to provide all the blacklisted
extensions and a better error message, and the UploadWizard one because due to
subsequent changes the old patch wouldn't work right at all.

The new patches are Gerrit change 16040 and Gerrit change 16041.

Err... You seem to be forgetting that the log's primary use isn't for dealing
with complaints. One can look up every checks performed upon an IP or IP range;
this is its main use. Helps a lot with long term vandals. 2 years is far too
short in that respect.

The bug description above refers to test-repo.

During demo time we looked at the dev-repo. The behaviour is different here:
* You save an empty descr field and you won't have an edit buttons next to the
description field.
* You start entering a new description, there are no buttons appearing for
saving or canceling.
* You hit enter, the text is saved. No edit button though.
* You reload the page, the edit button appears.

When you delete the content of an existing description and save the empty

When you edit the empty field again now, you are not able to cancel (grey
cancel button), but you HAVE to save a change.
