I had bug 38747 about -bastion not being accessible which was fixed but I
forgot meanwhile the instance is corrupted. We should use -dbdumps for now.

On a side note, wikimedia-task-appserver should be installed using a puppet
class that would setup the symbolic links to /data/project :-)

When one add a category through upload wizard category adder, it give some
suggestion (using hot-cat style). Though, when try to add something like:
Professors from israel, the suggestion stops at the i since the category's name
is Professors from Israel. Would be moew user-friendly to suggest the right
category name and if choosen, uppercase or lowercase as needed.

--- Comment #3 from jeb...@gmail.com 2012-07-29 08:38:09 UTC ---
It could be nice to have some of the arguments against splitting an item, its
not that uncommon to refine a page to be more specific. Merging is mostly for
fixing an error condition (misnamed entities at the Wikipedias leads to
duplicate new items) and secondly an editorial condition, while splitting seems
to be mostly an editorial decision and secondly an error condition.

It's also removing the rcid parameter from the new pages with multiple edits in
the same day (in enhanced RC, the link with the rcid is the first timestamp for
the page), which makes it impossible to patrol them.
I've verified that it works on Meta, so it must be CleanChanges.

Commited gerrit 16909 for better description with action=help, but that does
not help when looking with ApiSandbox.

(In reply to comment #1)
For free text params like titles or tltemplates the api provides only one
 input
field. Let the user build its one list, maybe by having a + and add a new
 input
 field and so on.

That sounds like a good way, because there are more params with have | as a
separator.

splitting of items should not be.

However, I believe I have a use case: erroneously merged items. How could they
 be split back?

Merging items A and B means: transfer properties from A to B and turn A into a
redirect. Simply reverting these two edits will un-merge the items.

Splitting items will always be possible manually, but I think we should support
it. Basically, you would see a screen with all the properties, where you can
opt whether that property should be kept only in A, only in B, or in both. The
same goes for the sitelinks.

In most cases you use the merge feature, because you discover an article, that
had no langlinks before, but belongs to an existing groups (item).

An simpler solution for adding a split feature would be, to add a possibility
to duplicate items (without sitelinks). Then you only have to move some of the
sitelinks from the old item to the new item on a second step (split item =
duplicate item + reconnect some sitelinks at the new item).

The bug says merging of two items, but note that several items can be merged in
a chain with simply two and two items until all are merged.

Merging of two items also (I believe) imply merging of the history, or logging
that one of the items now are a redirect but contains part of the history.

An item should sometimes be split in two, often because it describes an entity
that is really two entities that share some time-space continuum.

An example is municipalities that often covers the same area as a town. Note
that this example is not easy to solve as several Wikipedias treat them as the
same, while others treat them as different entities.

Seems like mathjax doesn't have anti-aliasing on wikimedia sites (or doesn't
have support at all?)

This leads to not-very-pretty rendering on some mathematical symbols.

See the Integral on
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Math/MathJax_testing#Summation for
example.

Platonides ran `apt-get remove wikimedia-task-appserver` on bastion which wiped
the symlinks out in /usr/local/apache and broke all the wikis.

I re-added the symlinks for /data/project/apache to /usr/local/apache and
/data/project/apache/common-local to /usr/local/apache/common which brought the
wikis back.

The thumbnails, however remain broken - the below error message is displayed;
Error generating thumbnail

wfStreamThumb() The source file for the specified thumbnail does not exist.

The symlinks /data/project/upload6 to /mnt/upload6 and /data/project/thumbs to
/mnt/thumbs seem to be in place and $img-getSource() returns a path which
matches that in upload6 (so the image should be there), it's however apparently
not.

Looking over CommonSettings.php everything is pointing to the right place and
exists where it's expected to be.

I'm not that huge on mw so not too sure where to look next, might just be a
squid cache or something silly (though even then I have no idea how we
standardly purge thumbnails!).

Shouldn't cause too many issues over the weekend, but we probably should fix it
:)

Merging histories would be horrible, the result utterly misleading. You can't
do this with linear histories, that's an absolute no-no. We *could* maintain
the history as a directed graph with multiple parents and children per
revision. That would be cool, but it really unrelated to wikidata. This would
also be useful for text.

[Bug 38794] New: In Cologne Blue the tools using mw-js-message break formatting

   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED

AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

The tools using mw-js-message break the UI: while all the other contents move
when the mw-js-message div contains something occupying space, the sidebar
(quickbar) remains in the same position, overlapping the blue top part of the
skin.

May be mw-js-message div could be placed into (or alongside) the siteNotice
div instead, so that it would appear under the blue top bar?

P.S.: all of this is observed on English Wikipedia since June 22, 2012; though
the problem probably existed before that date.

I'm afraid you have broken the rendering of source tags now :( See e.g.
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/C_Programming/Variables - huge margins are added
to the top and bottom of codes.

The trouble is caused by white-space: pre-wrap; applied to .mw-code in
https://bits.wikimedia.org/en.wikibooks.org/load.php?debug=truelang=plmodules=skins.vectoronly=stylesskin=vector*
This enforces the rendering of a couple of newlines appearing in HTML source.

The minimal fix is to add .mw-code { white-space: inherit }. But I don't get
this code at all, why apply the rules to both pre and .mw-code when the second
always has the first inside?

History and logging of such things could be done outside of Wikidata as you
said, and probably should.. Its about the page history and should not be part
of the item, which just happens to be stored on the page. And it would be
really nice to be able to add such log entries after somebody have reused
content by cut'n'paste.

Gah.. Probably need another bug for that... ;/

Page history should support some kind of branching, perhaps by allowing a
special log entry that says at this revision there was a merge/split with that
revision.

Possibly the log entry should also be able to refer to a global site id (ref
global site ids in Wikidata) so it is possible to do proper attribution.

The log entries could be made automatically during editing, or added afterwards
by an admin through a special page.

[Bug 38466] Add link to user page for anonymous user on contribsub message (subtitle of Special:Contributions)

2012-07-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38466

--- Comment #5 from Fomafix foma...@googlemail.com 2012-07-29 18:02:27 UTC ---
The difference is, that the anonymous user name (IP address) is everywhere a
link except on the contributions page. The user page and the talk page is
consistent between anonymous users and normal users. But the contributions page
is not consistent between anonymous users and normal users. The only way to
reach the user page of anonymous users is click on the talk page and then on
the user page. Then you are an the contributions page of a anonymous user you
can not even see that a user page exists. You first have to click to the
possible not existing talk page to see that a user page exist.

[Bug 38796] New: Set E-mail me when a page or file on my watchlist is changed (enotifwatchlistpages) to true by default for new users

2012-07-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38796

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 38796
Summary: Set E-mail me when a page or file on my watchlist is
changed (enotifwatchlistpages) to true by default for
new users
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Keywords: shell
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Site configuration
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: federicol...@tiscali.it
CC: benap...@gmail.com, ja...@jdforrester.org,
roan.katt...@gmail.com, swall...@wikimedia.org,
wikimedia.b...@snowolf.eu
Depends on: 28026
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

This is the (hopefully) last split from bug 28026.
This preference is not true by default in our config, nor in the default
MediaWiki config, which doesn't make much sense; I checked inspired by
something jdforrester wrote me: «I assumed that when I created an account
e-mail me about pages I watch was switched on, as per most other instances
nowadays». They should indeed!

So, the plan is still the same as in bug 28026 comment 60 by Roan, except that
$wgEnotifWatchlist is currently true:

1) Add (or hack in) a MW config var that makes it so the enotifwatchlistpages
preference is visible, but not functional (i.e. enabling it doesn't actually
cause e-mails to be sent). This will stop watchlist e-mail notifs (similar to
disabling $wgEnotifWatchlist) but preserve the preference
2) Enable this config var
3) Compile a list of users that have the preference enabled
4) Set $wgDefaultUserOptions['enotifwatchlistpages'] = 1; . The preference is
now enabled for all users, but because it's not functional, there is no deluge
of e-mail notifications overwhelming our mail system
5) Using a maintenance script, set the preference to 0 for each user
individually, excluding users that already had it enabled (from the list made
in step 3) and invalidating the user cache for each user that it touches.
Running this will probably take a while (a few hours?) on a large wiki like
enwiki
6) Undo step 2 (disable the config var). The preference is now functional again
and enabled for the same set of users, but it will now also be enabled by
default for new users

This seemed to be harder than bug 36316 as first step, but unlike bug 36316 it
can't possibly give any problem with bots as long as their watchlists are
empty, and it won't affect existing users (or whatever subset of them we
choose) thanks to the maintenance script.
New users will still have to manually enable enotifwatchlist but won't have to
understand the watchlist before starting to use it...

It seems the problem is more isolated than I thought, since the file history I
pointed out has been updated meanwhile, although I find it strange that a
1-edit account takes so much time to be renamed.

As to matanya's file, the old name was Matanya (usurped); the new name should
be matanya (Right, Matanya?).

[Bug 38798] New: Garbage in URL after saving an edit on the English Wikipedia

2012-07-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon

 Bug #: 38798

Wikipedia
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal

 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: b...@mzmcbride.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

When I save a page on the English Wikipedia, I'm currently redirected to a URL
that contains incomprehensible garbage. Example after editing a section on a
user talk page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Kirill_Lokshinpe=1#You.27re_invited_to_Masterpiece_Museum_Edit-a-Thon.21.

The URL has been rewritten from example.com/wiki/ syntax to the far worse
example.com/w/index.php syntax. It now also includes pe=1, which makes sense
to no one.

URLs are very important. They're heavily passed around on the Internet. Unless
you have a really good reason to be messing around with them and inserting
garbage into them, PLEASE DON'T DO IT.

I believe this particular garbage is coming from the E3 team. I see absolutely
no reason it should be doing this for my user account.

Work around is to do
==%==

instead. (yeah i know, not a fix, but is a workable work around. Also replacing
the space before the % with an #32; would probably work, but not tested)

We add a nbsp (note the entity actually output is #160; not nbsp; We avoid
outputting named entities for compatibility with xml libs when in html5 mode)
for things of the form 20 % which in most langs should be a non-breaking
space (Esp. french from my understanding). Bug 18443 comment 7 explains
precisely when we do this.

You're welcome to submit a patch, but I won't fix this unless I have the time
to spare. This is an annoyance, not a bug, and it's temporary.

Our experiments are live for a short period of time, and they are optimized for
insight and speed rather than polish. They are not permanent features. They
will be taken down regardless of how well-liked they are, because they are
there to answer questions, not to be liked.

In April of 2011, the board unanimously approved Resolution:Openness[1], which
designates editor engagement and retention as the top priority for the
foundation. We won't fix the editor decline problem unless we know what is
causing it, and we won't know what is causing it unless we run a set of
experiments that test a range of hypotheses.

Multivariate testing *always* takes a toll. Think, for example, how
disorienting it would be to ask a question on IRC on the presumption that the
interface you just interacted with is universal, only to find that no one knows
what you're talking about, because they haven't been bucketed into the same
experimental group as you. We are aware of these effects and strive to minimize
them, but we will allow ourselves to behave like elephants from time to time
and we expect to be suffered.

On a serious note, the linker supports an option to use short urls even with
parameters (forcearticlepath) [OTOH i don't even know if this link comes from
the linker]. If the long url is the primary annoyance (unclear if it is, or if
the fact that the url is non-canonical whatsoever) one could use that.

Documentation? Don't be silly, this is MediaWiki! ;)

Heh. I've created
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Newlines_and_spaces#Non-breaking_spaces

(In reply to comment #20)
Please don't discuss the merits of various ideas here, discuss them on-wiki
 and
report on consensus. Bugzilla is an even worse discussion forum than talk
 pages. :)

Perhaps we can summarize on that Meta page (and even discuss in its talk)?

We've had localizable regexes before that were part of the parser, like
linktrail, but AFAIK those have been disabled as too scary. They can still be
localized per-language, but only in the PHP files, not in the MW-namespace
 messages.

This still holds true, so I suppose this is the way here too, and I've written
it in the above page. I'm not going to summarize anything else from these two
bugs because they're too long, but feel free if you find something consensual.
:-)

Not sure if I have the same or a related bug, but I'm adding to this to start
with.

When selecting use my current location and sort by distance it starts with
a monument ~102 km away and continues to monuments ~159km away and after that
some monuments 20km away shows up and distance increases as it should up to the
last one beeing ~98km away.

I've had this problem on a couple of locations in sweden.

[Bug 38800] New: Tidy should not insert newlines between div class=mw-code and other elements.

2012-07-29 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38800

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 38800
Summary: Tidy should not insert newlines between div
class=mw-code and other elements.
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: User interface
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: krinklem...@gmail.com
CC: krinklem...@gmail.com, roan.katt...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Created attachment 10902
  -- https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/attachment.cgi?id=10902
Screenshot of Tidy bug

Steps to reproduce:
* Install MediaWiki 1.20alpha + SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi extension
* Make sure $wgUseTidy is not set to true in LocalSettings.php (just in case)
* Create a page with syntaxhighlight source=phpfoo();/syntaxhighlight
* View source of the saved page:

div dir=ltr class=mw-geshi mw-code mw-content-ltrdiv class=javascript
source-javascriptpre class=de1foo [..]

The page looks fine.

* Now enable $wgUseTidy (requires that your server has tidy installed)
* View source of the saved page:

div dir=ltr class=mw-geshi mw-code mw-content-ltr
div class=javascript source-javascript
pre class=de1
foospan class=br0( [..]

This is problematic since elements that preserve whitespace (which can be any
element, there is no way to tell from the source code - this is determined by
css) will now show up to 3 more new lines before the word foo.

I've been looking around in the Tidy configuration, but can't find a way to
disable this.

[Bug 260] Handle pre overflow automatically with a scroll bar

--- Comment #25 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2012-07-29 20:39:24 UTC ---
I've seen that, but that is a separate bug entirely. Please create a new bug
for that.

Setting .mw-code { white-space: inherit } would be pointless as there is
already a white-space rule - which has been set for a reason: to preserve
whitespace. If the white-space property should be changed (which I don't think
it should) then it should be unset, to set twice.

I've filed bug 38800 for the bug that causes that. Again, bug 260 is fixed and
looks fine. Wikis that have Tidy enabled (by default Tidy is not enabled,
Wikipedia, however, has it enabled) suffer from this bug, but that has been the
case for a while. The fix for bug 260 made that more visible in some areas, but
it has been happening for a long while on some pages.

I'd support a public dropbox folder, if that's the best alternative we have.
The arbitrary size limitation on Commons and the lack of well-developed tools
to make high quality contributions a possibility is rather ridiculous imo :(

My point is that .mw-code should *not* have this rule (or, in fact, these
rules). .mw-code elements always have another div, then a pre inside – and only
this pre should have the white-space and no-wrap rules set. Then we don't have
to care about newlines being inserted or removed or whatnot.

Per Ori's comment and our statements on the Village Pump, I'm recommending we
close this as WONTFIX, with the caveat that patches are welcome.

This experiment will end in two weeks, at which point URLs will return to
normal. In the meantime, manually entering or clicking on URLs without the
pe=1 string will work as expected, so no breakage should occur, and thus I'm
going to second the request that you bear with our temporary imperfections in
implementation. More about our testing of this feature at:

any major cases that we have missed, please leave a comment.
