[Bug 156] Add section edit link for 0th section
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156 --- Comment #65 from Mark Hurd 2012-08-25 03:19:01 UTC --- I believe my current settings have the "show edit section 0" and "show [edit]s on the RHS, rather than next to the heading text" settings on and as far as I know no other settings adjust these. For me the [edit] links all line up on the RHS of the page (I know there are variances when there are images on the RHS, but that's OK) including the section 0 [edit]. They all have tooltips saying "Edit section: ", except for section 0 which just says "Edit section: 0". The edit section 0 link is on the page heading and a long way a way from the "edit this page" tab (in Monobook). It is not quite as far apart in Vector, where the edit the whole page "tab" is just called "Edit". Perhaps Vector's "Edit" needs to be expanded to "Edit this page", like Monobook. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 39637] New: diff3 error message logged when undoing an edit at end of file
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39637 Web browser: --- Bug #: 39637 Summary: diff3 error message logged when undoing an edit at end of file Product: MediaWiki Version: 1.20-git Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: Unprioritized Component: History/Diffs AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org ReportedBy: zacharyhar...@hotmail.com Classification: Unclassified Mobile Platform: --- Problem: I host a public MW and it causes the following message to repeatedly appear in my Apache error.log file: /usr/bin/diff3: No newline at end of file At least one situation I've been able to track down which commonly triggers this "error" is anytime someone attempts to "undo" an edit, which is prior to the most recent edit, which was at the bottom of the page in the revision in which it was made. Minimal example: On a fresh 1.20 install, I create a new page "X" with content "a". Then I edit page "X" to add a newline and "b". Then another edit to add a newline and "c". Now if I click "undo" on the second ("b") edit, with "tail -f /var/log/apache2/error.log" running in another window, I immediately see the diff3 error appear. Hack solution: If I make the following mydiff3 function: #!/bin/bash diff3 $* |& grep -v "No newline at end of file" and point wgDiff3 to mydiff3, then (naturally) the error no longer appears in my log files, and the wiki appears to continue to function as expected. Severity: I have not been able to find any circumstances where this reported diff3 "No newline" error causes any unexpected behavior with MW's "undo"/merge functionality. At this point, the worst consequence I see of this bug is that it fills my Apache error logs to an extent that gets in the way of me noticing other errors and bugs. Relevant system info: diff3 (GNU diffutils) 3.0 Server version: Apache/2.2.16 (Debian) Observed this bug in MW 1.15.5 and current 1.20-git -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. He started the other discussion later. At that later discussion there seemed to be some agreement that something was needed in order to have some kind of overview of the 106,000 gallery pages. See that number here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Database_reports/Page_count_by_namespace Foroa did not state an opinion on the other ideas. Please reread the later discussion at Commons:Categories_for_discussion to understand the problem. It is the main discussion: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Categories_for_discussion/2012/07/Category:Gallery_pages#Category:Gallery_pages It is not about the awareness of the main namespace. We are aware of it. It is about being able to browse the titles of the many gallery pages in that main namespace in some comprehensible way. One possibility might be to categorize all gallery pages in a flat category. But that is not so easy to browse. Even with Template:LargeCategoryTOC. And it is not in a category tree format that way. So it would be nice if some kind of way could be created in MediaWiki to show gallery page titles in some kind of browseable category tree format. I am open to ideas. But I am not a developer, and so I am asking developers for any help they might give. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 156] Add section edit link for 0th section
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156 --- Comment #64 from Krinkle 2012-08-24 21:38:02 UTC --- The main problem here is finding a good user interface for it. Especially avoiding further complication of the user interface. Putting an [edit] link on top looks weird and out of place, because as pointed out there is no heading for it. So far we've managed by holding up that to edit the text before the first section, use the main "Edit" tab for the entire page. Its not ideal, but it works without problems. A better editor will take care of this problem, for example in VisualEditor. So is this really a problem in the long term? If so, we'll need to figure out a way to do it without compromising the interface. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8475 --- Comment #10 from Neil Harris 2012-08-24 19:44:12 UTC --- Comment 9 is a really good idea. That way, it's in addition to the local block, not instead of it, and there's no logic needed to combine blocks on local wikis. Perhaps something like a six month or one year blacklisting? Also, it might be worth re-scanning globally blocked IPs periodically before their blocks expire: if they are still proxies, they can be re-blocked for another period instead of being unblocked, and so on ad infinitum until they stop being proxies. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug. [Bug 38891] MediaWiki API 2.0 (tracking)
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38891 --- Comment #8 from Roan Kattouw 2012-08-24 19:18:51 UTC --- (In reply to comment #7) > A few comments: > * While RESTfulish URLs look nice, MW is supposed to work without rewrites AND > pathinfo, so I guess we'll have to stick with api.php?foo=bar Yes. > * Formats: my main concern is format=xml WHICH SHOULD BE KILLED WITH FIRE, YEESSS. I'd like JSON to be the only format just so we can get rid of all the formatting differences, but really what I care most about is for XML output to die in a fire already. > * Prop is a useful thing when you're requesting a shitload of information, > especially when you're not on broadband. Also, some props require additional > computations, so better exclude them if not needed. For example, I can't > imagine action=parse without fine-grained props. Absolutely. (In reply to comment #5) > * Request-header based formatting (instead of format=json, use "Accept: > application/json", like $.ajax({ dataType: "json" }) already does. Optionally > still allowing an override, though I don't think that should be necessary. Or > alternatively drop all non-JSON formats as of API 2.0, may sound radical but I > think its perfectly reasonable). One feature of the existing API that should be a design goal of the new one is that it doesn't rely on any fancy HTTP features, so you can write an API client even if you can't: * use HTTP methods other than GET and POST (e.g. JavaScript) * set custom HTTP headers * read custom HTTP headers * read HTTP status codes The API could *optionally* communicate things using these things (we currently set the X-API-Error header for instance), but you should be able to use it just as well without them. So per that rule, formatting based on Accept: is evil unless &format= is also kept around. I also like the idea of just making it JSON-only. > * Less complicated responses > - don't wrap everything in { : } You need to if you allow multiple actions (which I think we should). > - always include all properties, the <>prop thing is very annoying imho It's good for filtering per comment 7, although the defaults could be tweaked. > * Simple directory-like urls (either through rewriting or with path info) > Evil because it reduces flexibility in terms of requesting multiple things at the same time, and requires path info. Since an open proxy block would typically be something like a one year block with everything (editing, talk page access, and account creation) restricted, I would imagine that this would be the common case. https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8475 --- Comment #5 from Neil Harris 2012-08-24 18:27:02 UTC --- The idea is that without abuse, there would be no block, and therefore that the block, of itself, is evidence that the proxy is actively being abused at that time. Providing scanning occurs relatively soon after the block, this thus provides the element of human judgment needed as per comment 3; the resultant scanning and blocking (if the IP is found to be a proxy) can then be performed entirely automatically. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug.
