Do Not re-close this without actually resolving the issue. the lack of access
via API makes using this in large scale cleanup very difficult.

This, as well as bug 29961, might be a blocker for bug 5701 and for any piece
of software (and human) expecting some error message when export fails.

[Bug 156] Add section edit link for 0th section

2012-08-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156

--- Comment #65 from Mark Hurd  2012-08-25 03:19:01 UTC ---
I believe my current settings have the "show edit section 0" and "show [edit]s
on the RHS, rather than next to the heading text" settings on and as far as I
know no other settings adjust these.

For me the [edit] links all line up on the RHS of the page (I know there are
variances when there are images on the RHS, but that's OK) including the
section 0 [edit].

They all have tooltips saying "Edit section: ", except for
section 0 which just says "Edit section: 0".

The edit section 0 link is on the page heading and a long way a way from the
"edit this page" tab (in Monobook). It is not quite as far apart in Vector,
where the edit the whole page "tab" is just called "Edit".

Perhaps Vector's "Edit" needs to be expanded to "Edit this page", like
Monobook.

[Bug 39637] New: diff3 error message logged when undoing an edit at end of file

2012-08-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39637

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 39637
   Summary: diff3 error message logged when undoing an edit at end
of file
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.20-git
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: History/Diffs
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: zacharyhar...@hotmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Problem: I host a public MW and it causes the following message to repeatedly
appear in my Apache error.log file:
/usr/bin/diff3: No newline at end of file

At least one situation I've been able to track down which commonly triggers
this "error" is anytime someone attempts to "undo" an edit, which is prior to
the most recent edit, which was at the bottom of the page in the revision in
which it was made.

Minimal example: On a fresh 1.20 install, I create a new page "X" with content
"a". Then I edit page "X" to add a newline and "b". Then another edit to add a
newline and "c". Now if I click "undo" on the second ("b") edit, with "tail -f
/var/log/apache2/error.log" running in another window, I immediately see the
diff3 error appear.

Hack solution: If I make the following mydiff3 function:

#!/bin/bash
diff3 $* |& grep -v "No newline at end of file"

and point wgDiff3 to mydiff3, then (naturally) the error no longer appears in
my log files, and the wiki appears to continue to function as expected.

Severity: I have not been able to find any circumstances where this reported
diff3 "No newline" error causes any unexpected behavior with MW's "undo"/merge
functionality. At this point, the worst consequence I see of this bug is that
it fills my Apache error logs to an extent that gets in the way of me noticing
other errors and bugs.

Relevant system info:
diff3 (GNU diffutils) 3.0
Server version: Apache/2.2.16 (Debian)
Observed this bug in MW 1.15.5 and current 1.20-git

The Village Pump discussion that you quote is now archived here:
*http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Proposals/Archive/2012/07#Gallery_portals

Foroa only made that one comment there. He started the other discussion later.
At that later discussion there seemed to be some agreement that something was
needed in order to have some kind of overview of the 106,000 gallery pages. See
that number here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Database_reports/Page_count_by_namespace

Foroa did not state an opinion on the other ideas. Please reread the later
discussion at Commons:Categories_for_discussion to understand the problem. It
is the main discussion:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Categories_for_discussion/2012/07/Category:Gallery_pages#Category:Gallery_pages

It is not about the awareness of the main namespace. We are aware of it. It is
about being able to browse the titles of the many gallery pages in that main
namespace in some comprehensible way. One possibility might be to categorize
all gallery pages in a flat category. But that is not so easy to browse. Even
with Template:LargeCategoryTOC. And it is not in a category tree format that
way.

So it would be nice if some kind of way could be created in MediaWiki to show
gallery page titles in some kind of browseable category tree format. I am open
to ideas. But I am not a developer, and so I am asking developers for any help
they might give.

Is the screen changing not feedback enough?

We should probably always hide the webkit selection border.

I suppose we could add hover effects like on the campaign list to other
places... is this what you mean?

[Bug 39607] Upload Wizard: User preference for concurrent uploading

--- Comment #1 from Brion Vibber  2012-08-24 23:58:41 UTC
---
How much benefit do we get from concurrent uploads?

We might consider simply always uploading sequentially, or at most two
simultaneous uploads so we get "full speed" on the other channel during the
connection setup phase.

[Bug 39635] New: PostgreSQL LOCK IN SHARE MODE option is a syntax error

2012-08-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39635

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 39635
   Summary: PostgreSQL LOCK IN SHARE MODE option is a syntax error
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.19.0
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: major
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Database
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ironiri...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

When refreshing a category page, MediaWiki issues a query to my PostgreSQL
backend ending in "LOCK IN SHARED MODE". This isn't valid syntax to PGSQL.

I have edited my copy of includes/db/Database.php,
DatabaseBase::selectSQLText() to include...

if ($this->getType() == 'postgres' and
(in_array('LOCK IN SHARE MODE', $options, true) or
isset($options['LOCK IN SHARE MODE'])))
{
// just fail
//throw new Exception('Cannot use LOCK IN SHARE MODE
with Postgresql');
// or just remove the option
unset($options['LOCK IN SHARE MODE']);
unset($options[array_search('LOCK IN SHARE MODE',
$options, true)]);
}

The lack of a locking operation seems to me to be a better tradeoff than a
category page flooded with pg_query error output.

The fix is written, reviewed and merged into MediaWiki core.

In order to deploy it right now it has to be backported to the 1.20wmf10
branch, this can be done by anyone with a Gerrit account (no deployment access
needed). Then a deployer will approve it and push it live right away.

When exporting semantic query of a list of coordinates to KML, results are
empty if list of values is less than 10. Somehow, "offset" value is set to 10,
and cannot be changed by specifying another "offset" value in the query.

I resolved this issue by adding the following to SM_KMLPrinter.php at line 136
(though I do not code in PHP, so someone should review this):

if ( array_key_exists( 'offset', $this->m_params ) ) {
$link->setParameter( $this->m_params['offset'], 'offset' );
}

[Bug 156] Add section edit link for 0th section

2012-08-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156

--- Comment #64 from Krinkle  2012-08-24 21:38:02 UTC ---
The main problem here is finding a good user interface for it. Especially
avoiding further complication of the user interface.

Putting an [edit] link on top looks weird and out of place, because as pointed
out there is no heading for it.

So far we've managed by holding up that to edit the text before the first
section, use the main "Edit" tab for the entire page. Its not ideal, but it
works without problems.

A better editor will take care of this problem, for example in VisualEditor.

So is this really a problem in the long term? If so, we'll need to figure out a
way to do it without compromising the interface. I don't see a way to do that.

OK, let's drill down to the heart of the matter: Which version of Chrome?

I'm on Chromium 18.0.1025.168 (Developer Build 134367 Linux) Ubuntu 12.04.

Maybe this happens over slower connections, but not faster ones? I'm on an
ethernet connection, maybe you're on wireless? I'll test that now.

Adding link to a Wikipedia Village Pump discussion about this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28proposals%29&oldid=508962495#Activate_section_0_edit_link_for_everyone

Conclusion:

"There is a strong consensus in favour of the proposal in principle. Several
editors raise concerns that the section 0 link might be confusing for editors
(particularly new, but also experienced editors who weren't expecting it) and
these concerns are worthy of consideration. Support for the revised proposal to
label the link in a way that would not cause confusion was unanimous.

I recommend that the wording of the link be worked out, and then that the
applicable modifications be made to the interface, via a Bugzilla request if
developer intervention is required."

Currently we load 64x64 thumbnails; on hdpi and xhdpi devices these are lower
resolution than the screen allows.

We could use window.devicePixelRatio to load 96x96 or 128x128 images and show
them the same on-screen size, looking better.

On Gingerbread I see the webkit selection border around things like buttons --
but usually *after* clicking.

There's not good visual feedback at all on ICS.

We should visibly highlight buttons and selectable list items during press,
which will help give feedback to the user and make sure they know they're
tapping the right widget.

Most buttons are red, solid rectangles with no border and sharp corners.

On the take-photo dialog, we have red, solid rounded rectangles with a thin
black border.

We should stick with one or the other, probably.

The character „ is shown incorrectly on Burmese wikis (my.wikpedia and
my.wiktionary), to which WebFonts was recently deployed, when using the
"TharLon" script.
It appears as an E with a dash over it [I can't copy it here from there,
because it will turn into the „ character).

Examples:
https://my.wiktionary.org/wiki/Special:MovePage/destabilisations?uselang=de
(the de translation contains „ as standard quotation mark).
https://my.wiktionary.org/w/index.php?diff=prev&oldid=430116

When choosing one of the other two fonts that are avaiable, it shows up
correctly.

[Bug 8475] On-demand proxy scanning

--- Comment #10 from Neil Harris  2012-08-24 19:44:12

Comment 9 is a really good idea. That way, it's in addition to the local block,
not instead of it, and there's no logic needed to combine blocks on local
wikis. Perhaps something like a six month or one year blacklisting?

Also, it might be worth re-scanning globally blocked IPs periodically before
their blocks expire: if they are still proxies, they can be re-blocked for
another period instead of being unblocked, and so on ad infinitum until they
stop being proxies.

[Bug 38891] MediaWiki API 2.0 (tracking)

(In reply to comment #7)
> A few comments:
> * While RESTfulish URLs look nice, MW is supposed to work without rewrites AND
> pathinfo, so I guess we'll have to stick with api.php?foo=bar
Yes.

> * Formats: my main concern is format=xml WHICH SHOULD BE KILLED WITH FIRE,
YEESSS. I'd like JSON to be the only format just so we can get rid of all the
formatting differences, but really what I care most about is for XML output to
die in a fire already.

> * Prop is a useful thing when you're requesting a shitload of information,
> especially when you're not on broadband. Also, some props require additional
> computations, so better exclude them if not needed. For example, I can't
> imagine action=parse without fine-grained props.
Absolutely.

(In reply to comment #5)
> * Request-header based formatting (instead of format=json, use "Accept:
> application/json", like $.ajax({ dataType: "json" }) already does. Optionally
> still allowing an override, though I don't think that should be necessary. Or
> alternatively drop all non-JSON formats as of API 2.0, may sound radical but I
> think its perfectly reasonable).
One feature of the existing API that should be a design goal of the new one is
that it doesn't rely on any fancy HTTP features, so you can write an API client
even if you can't:
* use HTTP methods other than GET and POST (e.g. JavaScript)
* set custom HTTP headers
* read custom HTTP headers
* read HTTP status codes
The API could *optionally* communicate things using these things (we currently
set the X-API-Error header for instance), but you should be able to use it just
as well without them.

So per that rule, formatting based on Accept: is evil unless &format= is also
kept around. I also like the idea of just making it JSON-only.

> * Less complicated responses
>  - don't wrap everything in { : }
You need to if you allow multiple actions (which I think we should).

> - always include all properties, the <>prop thing is very annoying imho
It's good for filtering per comment 7, although the defaults could be tweaked.

> * Simple directory-like urls (either through rewriting or with path info)
>
Evil because it reduces flexibility in terms of requesting multiple things at
the same time, and requires path info. See also comment 6 and comment 7.

If the open proxy block is either longer or more stringent than the existing
block, it should replace the existing block with a block that combines the
greater of the restrictions and length of both.

Since an open proxy block would typically be something like a one year block
with everything (editing, talk page access, and account creation) restricted, I
would imagine that this would be the common case.

Otherwise, it should just add a comment that the IP is also an open proxy to
the block log.

So if we scan the ip after setting the block, and the scan results show that an
ip is also an open proxy (or not an open proxy), how do you see that affecting
the block that has just been set? Would it alter the time period, or what the
block prevents? Or just add a comment that this IP is also an open proxy?

[Bug 8475] On-demand proxy scanning

2012-08-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8475

--- Comment #6 from Neil Harris  2012-08-24 18:33:15
UTC ---
Also, because automatic scans based on blocks will only be performed on blocked
IP addresses, most IP addresses connecting will never be scanned, greatly
reducing irritation to others by unsolicited scans (if you don't want your IP
scanned, don't do things that will get you blocked), as well as limiting its
impact on system load and traffic (there are many edits per second across the
cluster, but blocks are far rarer.)

[Bug 8475] On-demand proxy scanning

2012-08-24 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8475

--- Comment #5 from Neil Harris  2012-08-24 18:27:02
UTC ---
The idea is that without abuse, there would be no block, and therefore that the
block, of itself, is evidence that the proxy is actively being abused at that
time.

Providing scanning occurs relatively soon after the block, this thus provides
the element of human judgment needed as per comment 3; the resultant scanning
and blocking (if the IP is found to be a proxy) can then be performed entirely
automatically.

Are you using some Picasa app to provide access in the gallery? If so, which?
There seem to be a bunch and I'm not sure which is official etc.

I did a quick test with adding
saveToPhotoAlbum: true
to the camera options.

This gives us back a content:// URL which sounds nice, but... I don't see the
photos in the Gallery app, which is a bit worrying.

OK, I guess we lost Saibo. In any case, after some digging (and sidetracking),
I found that the problem is wy down in
mediawiki/core/resources/mediawiki/mediawiki.jqueryMsg.js:605.

Basically, this shouldn't be href="#", it should be href="javascript:". It's a
hack, but it's a helpful hack.

However, I can't test the effects of this, because there are still not proper
reports of duplicate or duplicate-archive, which means I can't see these
errors.

So, I guess we come back to "I'll revisit this."

Saibo, I'm adding you back. If you're adamant about not being informed about
this bug's progress, feel free to re-remove, but I'm glad you're around to help
focus people on bugs. I just wish sometimes you could be a little less
accusatory about it :)

In fairness, the use of the URL clutter was to indicate that the page was the
page displayed after an edit submit. It's not obvious how to reliably recreate
that.

Sorry about the very long delay on this. I just looked at this again, and I'm
pretty sure that the issue is with Semantic Maps - or at least, that would be
the easiest place to put a fix for it. Jeroen, I'm reassigning this to you;
feel free to reassign it back if you think the issue is actually with SD.

[Bug 8475] On-demand proxy scanning

--- Comment #4 from Chris Steipp  2012-08-24 18:03:00

Jasper, we can test if an ip is serving as an open proxy pretty definitively by
connecting through it, assuming its really open and they haven't blocked our
scanning server.

But yes, judgement is needed to determine if this technology is being abused,
and if the abuse warrants a block.

I'm still trying to understand Neil's request though-- what is the desired
outcome of scanning the ip after the block?

Why is it needed at all? What is it used for? Surely one can come up with a
less visible / annoying solution to this problem?

Users shouldn't have to see this as visible like that. Especially since (as
correctly pointed out in comment 0) urls should be canonical whenever possible.

This could probably be solved with a cookie, user session variable, url hash
value. Or a state in the database, or calculating it dynamically
(user.editcount > 0?) whatever the case. A url variable seems rather hacky for
anything other than simulation (e.g. like CentralNotice's "template" query
variable).

Thanks for your detailed report, Aaron.

There's no cluster16 in the config. The revision timestamp is
2008-01-25T00:11:44Z. You can't simply disappear an ES cluster leaving
references to it. What happened with its contents?
Given these are 2008 events, I'd pass this to Tim.
