See for instance the URL, which is one provided to translators, not provided by
the extension itself (there's no taction parameter).
It doesn't depend on skin and it's a bit confusing because you see a
proofreading task in the translate tab/view (with neither of Show all
messages and Show untranslated messages radio buttons selected).

[Bug 39532] Don't process some items in Belarusian monuments lists

2012-08-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39532

--- Comment #3 from Effeietsanders effeietsand...@wikipedia.be 2012-08-26
08:37:38 UTC ---
So basically what Paul wants is that these copyrighted monuments don't show up
in the tools. A possible workaround is to remove them temporarily from the
database, a nicer way would be to add an extra field 'copyright status' or
something, and not to display those monuments in the tools.

It seems to me that https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38462 is
half the solution.

[Bug 39659] New: Switch to filter out subpages from Special:UncategorizedPages

On some wikis, subpages are a legitimate way to organize pages in hierarchical
trees which is complementary to categories: actually, where they are not,
subpages are not supposed to be enabled.
Listing all subpages makes the list of uncategorized pages completely useless
for categorization work.

For instance a couple years ago I categorized all pages which needed to be
categorized on Meta-Wiki and even after this work there were more than 1200
pages listed there, of which only 65 actually needed to be categorized
([[m:User:Nemo bis/Uncategorized non-subpages]]) and a half shared a handful
common basepages (cf. [[m:User:Nemo bis/Uncategorized subpages of non-common
basepages]]).

[Bug 39660] New: List all uncategorized pages (from all namespaces) on Special:UncategorizedPages or elsewhere

[[mw:Special:UncategorizedPages]] lists uncategorized pages from content
namespaces (not only main but also Extension, Manual etc.) but there's no way
to list uncategorized pages from namespaces which are non-content and are not
(currently) File, Template or Category.

It would be better to have a list of all uncategorized pages, preferably with
the option of filtering by namespace with a dropdown as on [[Special:NewPages]]
(it's a different but the UI should be consistent).

For best implementation, this depends on bug 39659 (to avoid clutter) and bug
12942 (to avoid multiplication of special pages or excessively long lists).

Tracking bug mainly for issues involving multiple querypage special pages at
the same time, e.g. from a user interface or performance perspective.
Performance affects the usage of such special pages on Wikimedia projects but
is not the only reason (see e.g. bug 15434), still I think MediaWiki is the
best product for this tracking bug.

Adding Roan in cc as he mentioned some querypage work in bug 12942 comment 7 so
he surely knows more.

The code Victor wrote had a completely different API to the stock Lua string

Currently, all uses of -webkit-filter in a tag's style attribute are being

-ms-filter and there isn't any actual security risk in allowing -webkit-filter,
the style should be allowed.

issue error messages (like syntaxhighlight-specify) that are inserted into

Voting for a bug makes it confirmed. Assuming anyone can vote and confirm (not
just those who already have canconfirm), the canconfirm permission is pointless
as everyone is able to confirm bugs.

Been playing around a bit, and something like:

#mw-content-text ol,
#mw-content-text ul,
#mw-content-text dl {
overflow: hidden;
list-style-position: inside;

}

#mw-content-text li,
#mw-content-text dd {
padding-left: 1.5em;
text-indent: -1.5em;
}

/* Correct directionality when page dir is different from site/user dir */
.mw-content-ltr ul,
.mw-content-rtl .mw-content-ltr ul {
/* @noflip */
margin: 0.3em 0 0 0.6em;
padding: 0;
}
.mw-content-rtl ul,
.mw-content-ltr .mw-content-rtl ul {
/* @noflip */
margin: 0.3em 0.6em 0 0;
padding: 0;
}
.mw-content-ltr ol,
.mw-content-rtl .mw-content-ltr ol {
/* @noflip */
margin: 0.3em 0 0 2.2em;
padding: 0;
}
.mw-content-rtl ol,
.mw-content-ltr .mw-content-rtl ol {
/* @noflip */
margin: 0.3em 2.2em 0 0;
padding: 0;
}
/* @noflip */
.mw-content-ltr dd,
.mw-content-rtl .mw-content-ltr dd {
margin-left: 0.6em;
margin-right: 0;
}
/* @noflip */
.mw-content-rtl dd,
.mw-content-ltr .mw-content-rtl dd {
margin-right: 0.6em;
margin-left: 0;
}

Actually comes quite close. The problem is that it significantly changes the
layout of all these elements. hlist on en.wp for instance was immediately
troubled by it. Additionally, long lists wouldn't flow around the floating
element anymore, but always be as a block to the right of it.

profiler image

This check for 'is a generator' is quite expensive for ApiQuery - as it has to
load all class files to resolve it:

private function makeGeneratorList( $moduleList ) {
foreach( $moduleList as  $moduleName = $moduleClass ) {
if ( is_subclass_of( $moduleClass, 'ApiQueryGeneratorBase'  ) ) {

It may make sense to build generator list in somewhat lighter way.

This is ends up being 30%+ of API setup cost for simple API queries, e.g.
api.php?action=queryformat=txt

Attaching profiler image.

[Bug 39646] Scribunto needs sane Unicode string support

--- Comment #5 from MZMcBride b...@mzmcbride.com 2012-08-26 13:04:08 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #4)
 The code Victor wrote had a completely different API to the stock Lua string
 functions, and it wasn't possible to simulate it in pure Lua. So I disabled it
 before I deployed it. It's better for the functionality to be temporarily
 missing than to be stuck with a bad interface forever.

Thank you for explaining. That's fine and I completely agree. But it would
saved me a ton of confusion if this had been made clearer (cf. bug 39655).

It has other problems too, especially on talk pages where all indents are now
misaligned (due to not adhering to the default 1.6/3.2em indent space). Also,
list-style-position: inside; casues numbered lists to align the list markers to
be *left* and push the items to the right as number of digits increase, which
is also rahter unsightly.

So it looks like Ifcad0daf was abandoned by Tim on August 24 because Swift was
going to be used to resolve the issue instead. Is there a new changeset
addressing the issue that Ifcad0daf sought to address?

If so, you may be ready for a final review and deployment. I believe the

[Bug 39667] New: Divide wikis into database lists by approximate size for performance engineering

 Bug #: 39667

   Product: Wikimedia

  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: b...@mzmcbride.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

There are a number of bugs in which small wikis are unfairly impacted by the
performance constraints of large wikis. For example, many Special pages have
been disabled across all Wikimedia wikis (cf. bug 15434). A small wiki such as
ch.wikipedia.org, with 151 content pages, is treated the same as a wiki with
over four million content pages. This doesn't make any sense.

This situation is unacceptable. A small wiki should not see a reduced user
experience because of the existence of (almost entirely unrelated) wikis that
have millions of content pages. We know the approximate sizes involved, so we
should be able to safely and sanely tier these wikis (and then periodically
check those tiers for accuracy and appropriateness). While we all wish that
every wiki could be treated equally, it doesn't make any sense to punish small
wikis indefinitely due to circumstances over which they have no control or
involvement (i.e., an explosion in growth on a sibling project).

Some stats are available at
https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/Wiki_server_assignments. There are other
lists at Meta-Wiki, I believe. And I can query the *links tables for size if
that's deemed necessary.

As far I as understand this, step one would be to make a set of groupings and
then create individual wiki lists. Or perhaps just have a small.dblist or a
large.dblist and add conditional statements based on that?

It looks like a small.dblist may already exist, even? Is that a list of small
wikis (https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/small.dblist doesn't load for me)?

--- Comment #40 from MZMcBride b...@mzmcbride.com 2012-08-26 15:23:38 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #35)
 I can't agree with that at the moment. We are yet to have a comment here about
 which queries are do-able for smaller wikis; yet more might be optimisable
 enough to run on larger wikis. There's no way I can advocate sweeping these
 pages under the rug until that issue is looked into.

I split this issue out to bug 39667 (Divide wikis into database lists by
approximate size for performance engineering). Punishing small wikis due to
their larger brethren has never made sense. This needs to be fixed.

[Bug 39665] ApiQuery-makeGeneratorList autoloads all query classes

2012-08-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Yay, reflection. Done like this, it's always going to be costly

This is at least somewhat better than it was (changed recently), in some cases,
where this list would be created twice...

We stick this in some apc (maybe the simplest way), or memcached, though that
feels slightly strange

Other than that, I suppose we could have this defined in code, rather than the
current resultant iteration over $wgAPIPropModules and $wgAPIListModules

[Bug 39635] PostgreSQL LOCK IN SHARE MODE option is a syntax error

2012-08-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39635

--- Comment #5 from Christopher John Harrington ironiri...@gmail.com
2012-08-26 15:44:16 UTC ---
Just to add more comment spam (sorry) it's worth noting that the patch is sane
even if this isn't a bug in current code, since the 'LOCK IN SHARED MODE' isn't
valid syntax in Postgres, and will always fail. Hence why I left an exception
there (but commented) as an option instead of silently discarding the flag, as
that particular flag simply doesn't make sense with Postgres and should be
treated as a bug.

I assume Mediawiki has some sort of assert() construct, though I'm not a MW dev
so I'm not aware of it. If so, that might be a smarter approach.

 Voting for a bug makes it confirmed. Assuming anyone can vote and confirm (not
 just those who already have canconfirm), the canconfirm permission is
 pointless
 as everyone is able to confirm bugs.

It's not like we use the votes/confirmation as is anyway...

 Where should the line be between a large and a small wiki?

Any number is going to be arbitrary. Maybe the actual first step is to write a
maintenance script that can evaluate the size of the wikis in the cluster and
then output a file based on their sizes (with a --size flag or something). So
it'd be something like php measureWikis.php --size=1  large.dblist or
something?

Measuring the number of content pages is probably easiest, as it's a stored
value (in site_stats) and it gives a decent comparison between wikis (or it
should in theory, at least).

[Bug 28710] enhancement request: make frequently updated special pages update themselves automatically

--- Comment #5 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2012-08-26 16:52:02 UTC ---
I'm closing this bug because imho it is too generic to be feasible.

(In reply to comment #0)
 It would be nice if frequently updated special pages, such as Recent Changes,
 Watchlist, Block log, Page creation log, page history and possibly others,
 would live-update themselves frequently, in the style of identi.ca. RC
 patrollers would probably appreciate it.

They are all special pages, and you could make a gadget in 10 minutes that
just polls itself and auto-refreshes with AJAX. That would work fine, but is
not very flexible, efficient and has some usability issues (e.g. the page is
replaced, and whatever you were doing is gone). So that is not a way we can do
it in core, but one could create a gadget that does that.

Having said that, whatever the solution is going to be, it should be optimized
for the specific use case. For example, for patrolling recent changes the
(imho) most appropiate solution is to make use of a push feed in the browser
and implement a proper patrolling workflow (see bug 5560 for that, which
depends on bug 29305).

So for the most common use case requested in this bug, it is a dupe of bug 5560
/ bug 29305.

The other examples (refreshing block log...), those are already covered by
recent changes. And if so desired, it could be easily implemented on those
individual special pages as well - that is, as soon as we have it working for
the catch-all recent changes. (for the individual special pages one just tabs
into the same feed, listen for rc.type=log where log_action is block, and then
use the interface messages / html templates to inject list items on the page).

[Bug 39649] CodeEditor extension's tab key behavior is slightly infuriating

2012-08-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39649

--- Comment #5 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2012-08-26 16:59:36 UTC ---
I believe in the scope of a code editor (not on the web in general) it is more
likely that the user is looking (and expecting) to indent code with Tab, than
to transfer the browser focus to the focusable element.

Given that CodeEditor context, I think Esc is just fine without additional
discoverability requirements.

I mean, it is more important that we can use tab to indent then to use tab to
transfer focus. Having to use Esc is not ideal, but I think it's worth the
trade of given these choices (if anyone has another idea, that's always welcome
of course).

 Where should the line be between a large and a small wiki?

That Meta page is auto-generated based on Special:Statistics, which in turn is
just queryable from the sitestats database table. So (not to be nitpicky), just
to be clear if and when we're going to use a server-side script to create
dblists[1] groups by pagecount; it can simply use the db directly, no need to
use that wiki page.

kipod, thumb is used almost always, in most languages and most projects so I
don't see any real need for supporting configuration for changing it other than
thumb.

Supporting such configurations aren't common in JS, and isn't needed as you may
always hack the toolbar with something like:
$('textarea').bind('wikiEditor-dialogs-loaded-insert-file',function(e){
//setting default for insert dialog (get by id the needed element and set
it's properties)
});
In such a way you can always set default for any field.

btw, for technical aspects we should probably use total page count as opposed
to article count. That way file pages / categories / users are also taken into
account. Because as far as the database is concerned page and revisions are all
the same, whether they are articles or not.

Fortunately both total page count and article count are tracked in site_stats.

The users in the canconfirm group have other permissions -- like the ability to
change the resolution of the bug -- that were being abused. I did look at
recent users of BZ before putting them in the canconfirm group.

Random people can still leave comments (and I think we want to keep that), but
only people in the canconfirm group can close it or otherwise change the
status.

As for confirming bugs, yes, one vote on the bug shouldn't confirm it. I
hadn't yet spent time analyzing just how that should work.

The unconfirmed/confirmed status could still be really useful, though. If we
can get 5 votes for the bug or one person with canconfirm to confirm it, then
moving it to CONFIRMED would be useful.

My use of confirmed/unconfirmed wasn't really well thought and would have
matured over time, so there is definitely room for improvement.

[Bug 39669] New: Semantic forms preview function should not rely on #content

2012-08-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39669

 Bug #: 39669
   Summary: Semantic forms preview function should not rely on
#content
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: master
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: SemanticForms
AssignedTo: yaro...@gmail.com
ReportedBy: leo_wallen...@hotmail.com
CC: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

SF_ajax_form_preview.js assumes at line 213 that there is a div called
“content”. However that is entirely up to the skin, and in custom made skins
this is probably quite often not the case.
If no content div is found execution of the javascript will stop, so it would
be nice if it was possible to find another way to identify the content area.

All right. Well, having the escape key change focus to the edit summary input
should be like three lines of code, so I'll mark this as easy.

Marking this as easy. Writing a maintenance script to query the cluster and

If anyone can answer my, that would be great. If it can be turned on, that
would be even better.

Special:Wantedpages hasn't been updated since 2009 on the Low Saxon Wikipedia
(nds-nl), what is the reason for that, is it possible to turn this feature on?
Someone has compiled a list in the past for the Low Saxon Wikipedia using a
bot, unfortunately this user isn't active anymore. Is there someone who can
help me with this?

Yeah... like when you tap on a native list item or button there's a highlight
effect while you're pressing down -- this lets you know what you're hitting and
gives you a chance to move your finger away if you hit the wrong thing.

Changing background color would probably be nice.
