[Bug 39975] UploadWizard not generating thumbnails

Confirming this.

Users uploading via Upload Wizard aren't seeing thumbnails under two
circumstances:

- they're using a browser that doesn't support local thumb generation (e.g. IE)
- they're uploading a batch that's larger than 10MB in total size (Upload
Wizard then disables client-side thumb rendering to avoid massive disk
churning)

Interestingly, I am unable to replicate this locally or on a standalone labs
instance, so this may be related to the cluster configuration (e.g.
Swift/multi-write).

The error message for a thumb URL (e.g.

I'm gonna go ahead and mark this bug as easy. It really just needs someone to
sit down and figure out/write down a sensible hierarchy at
 and
then get it implemented (or implement it themselves, if a current Bugzilla
admin takes this on). That shouldn't be very difficult to do. And don't worry:
if you start on this project and head in the wrong direction, people will
quickly speak up. :-)

[Bug 40103] clicking the watch list star throws an error and no feedback is shown (star does not stop rotating)

2012-09-10 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40103

--- Comment #12 from Krinkle 2012-09-11 02:17:37 UTC ---
We're running on the old code now which has old module versions (for jq 1.7)
with old jquery. All fine.

In master we've got the latest module versions which are all developed on jq
1.8 and may or may not work with 1.7 (we know from at least a few that they
break on 1.7). Currently breaking because we reverted to 1.7.2 all of a sudden
without running tests (in that the revert would've been marked -2 by Jenkins
had we had TestSwarm integration ready).

The two speed issues that were reported on 1.7 have both already been solved
and are awaiting merge (I spent time on that last week already).

If for some unreported reason jq 1.7 needs to be kept longer, no problem. But
at this point I believe it is more productive to merge those 2 changes asap,
and then revert back forward to 1.8 and be done with it.

The alternative is basically the same: There is no easy/static way to spot
things that break between 1.7/1.8 other than observation, which we then patch
as we go, and that's exactly what I've been doing for the last week. So
basically we went through this already and now we can go back up to 1.8.

No, it should not. This is PRG[1], that is by design and on purpose with a
redirect at the end.

The resulting page shows the preferences page, which should be a permalink to
that. Refreshing manually or by a browser recovery should not re-submit the
(potentially outdated) form information.

What could be done instead is write a core js module (always loaded) that
submits through javascript. That way the submission does not occupy the browser
window and the url never has to include "success=1". Instead, the callback
handler would put up that message programmatically (probably through mw.notify,
while at it).

As fallback for non-javascript it can stay as is (though it could be improved).

Fixed in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/#/c/23387/. The API that handles the
tagging only has access to the tag key names (i.e. the cryptic codes), so
unfortunately, we're restricted to those for the time being, but better to have
cryptic codes than nothing.

By default, MediaWiki requires an article to have an outgoing wikilink to be
considered a valid content page. A I can see, some pages in your wiki don't
have wikilinks, resulting in strangely-looking statistics. If you want every
content page to be considered valid, add $wgArticleCountMethod = 'any'; to
your LocalSettings.php.

[Bug 40154] New: Display redirect status in MediaWiki's info action

When you visit , it's not
very simple to understand that this page is a redirect and that consequently
the data presented pertains to the redirect page, it does not pertain to the
target of the redirect. This isn't a huge problem, but it can be a bit
disorienting, I think. (It'll be even less of a problem when this action has
some UI exposure. Manually created URLs are cruel.)

Somehow, I think the redirect status of a page should be displayed in the info
action's output. Maybe with another row in the table (Page is redirect: True),
maybe with italics, I don't really know.

I suppose one could have something like "Page status" where it would read:

* redirect
* content page
* subpage?
* non-existent? [deleted?]

Not sure. This needs thought.

Numbers passed to $ variables in MediaWiki:Categorytree-member-num must not be
formatted but raw. If parser functions are used in such message, then they
crash if the number is bigger than 999 and formatted with space as thousand
separator.

Seems to me as a regression because I never noticed such issue before.

When a page has been auto-patrolled, we would like to display a special message
in both the Page Info flyouts of the Curation Toolbar and in the review status
flyouts of the New Pages Feed, as so:

"This page was auto-patrolled on 10 September 2012 by Neo-Jay (talk |
contribs). This experienced editor has made 25158 edits since 7 November 2005
and has auto-patrol rights."

Instead of:

"Marked as reviewed on 10 September 2012 by Neo-Jay (talk | contribs)
This page was created on 10 September 2012 by Neo-Jay (talk | contribs)
25158 edits since 7 November 2005"

The reason this special message is needed is that it could lead some new
patrollers to believe that this editor has a conflict of interest that should
normally prevent them from reviewing their own page. This special message
clarifies that this editor has auto-patrol rights allowing them to do this.

Here's an example of an auto-patrolled page:

As discussed in today's team meeting, we decided to add the number of pages
reviewed this week at the bottom left of the New Pages Feed, as so:

"25,000 pages reviewed this week"

The reason we settled on adding this stat to that bottom bar is that it
provides an informative and constructive measure of the community's
accomplishments.

At the same time, displaying this single stat avoids our earlier concerns about
cluttering the display with too much information. And it also lets us keep the
current design, with both top and bottom bars. Otherwise, it would have been
weird to display a blank bottom bar and we would have had to remove that bottom
bar and figure out a new location for the 'Refresh page' button.

The font size and style should be the same as what we are now using for the
number of unreviewed stories at the top right of this page.

--- Comment #7 from Fabrice Florin 2012-09-10 22:32:39
UTC ---
As discussed in today's team meeting, we agreed to remove the 'Mark as
reviewed' checkbox at the bottom of the 'Add Tags' flyout, to reduce
unnecessary clutter.

As proposed above, pages that are tagged or marked for deletion would be
automatically marked as reviewed as well. This matches the existing behavior of
Twinkle, which patrollers are already familiar with and expect from this new
tool.

This means that we would have two main categories: reviewed and unreviewed
pages. Reviewed pages can break down in four sub-categories: pages simply
marked as reviewed, pages that have been tagged, pages that have been marked
for deletion, and pages that have been auto-patrolled. All such pages would
automatically display a green checkmark icon in the Curation Toolbar and on the
New Pages Feed, with one exception: any page that has been marked for deletion
will show both the green checkmark and black trash icons on the Curation
Toolbar, but only the black trash icon on the New Pages Feed.

The net result of all this is that it will require less work for the page
patrollers, as requested above. It will also unclutter the user interface as an
added bonus. And it will match Twinkle functionality, as well as increase the
overall numbers of reviewed posts.

In the rare scenarios where someone adds a tag but is not comfortable 'marking
it as reviewed', they can always use the 'mark as unreviewed' tool to do that.

Marking as dupe instead of depending on bug 39972. There is nothing to be done
here, just go back to jQuery 1.8.1.

See bug 39972 for tracking the speed regressions. There were only 2 speed
issues. Overal jQuery 1.8 introduces many speed improvements and refactorings
of Sizzle and the Animation engines. But 2 edge cases were slown down for us:

* Narayam's :text live binding (bug 39969, fixed)
* mediawiki.action.view.rightClickEdit (bug 39959, fixed)

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 39972 ***

For the full release of Page Curation on Sep. 20, let's replace the top line of
the New Pages Feed beta version with a more useful call to action, as so:

"Please review new pages below and help improve Wikipedia. Learn more · Leave
feedback"

(instead of the current line, which now says: "This is a beta version. Key
features are still in development.")

Whatever is still slow after that change is to be blamed on how Narayam is
designed. That needs refactoring later on. There is several major things that
are inherently slow.

Uh, removing Bugzilla sure is an overkill, but Rainer raises some good points.

Maybe the main page could be made more useful, and the comments less
barf-inducing for non-devs?

I've experienced these issues first-hand when trying to get people on pl.wiki
to just report issues in Bugzilla themselves; even English-speaking users seem
unwilling to touch it and prefer hoping somebody will relay their messages from
the Village Pump.

The solution isn't especially to forbid developers to use a decent tool. It
could also to have an extra entry point to allow users to report bugs a more

--- Comment #3 from Dereckson 2012-09-10 22:07:56

Bugzilla is a useful tool and very handy from a developers point of view.

The issues you note are:
(1) it's not easy for a non technical user to report bug
(2) interface should be localized

The solution isn't especially to forbid developers to use a decent tool. It
could also to have entry.

For exemple, for some of my C# softwares, I prepared a wizard using bugzproxy -
http://oss.dbc.dk/bugzproxy/ - you can see a screenshot on
http://www.dereckson.be/Blog/images/EspaceWin/AddBugWizardEWOSP.png

There are a lot of alternative solutions. We could prepare a localized bug
wizard similar to the Commons upload wizard. Or we could educate users to more
easily use Bugzilla (which is a useful skill: they will be able to report bugs
related to other open source projects too). But replace a tool by another when
you've 40k bugs inside and dozens of tools linked to it is pure suicide (or a
big time waster).

(By the way I must confess I would love to be able to edit my comments, but
it's not a blocker, as you can always add a new comment if it's important to
fix it.)

The problem with always using SVG is that at lower DPI the rendering quality is
inferior. In most browsers the pixel boundaries are off a bit here and there,
making the icons look fuzzy. I think using raster graphics for icons will some

The JavaScript code in core/resources has lots of Doxygen-style comments, but
http://svn.mediawiki.org/doc/ displays nothing for it, I assume because it's
not PHP.

I hoped this would be as simple as adding .js to FILE_PATTERNS in
maintenance/Doxyfile... however I tried this locally and the only documentation
it seems to generate for all the resources/*.js files that I checked is
   Variables
   function mw

It may be that mwdoc-filter.php needs to be adjusted for .js files, but it
could be that .js files need to be pre-processed, see "For those working with
JavaScript..." in http://www.stack.nl/~dimitri/doxygen/helpers.html

 Bug #: 40142
Summary: Windows 8 app: make search more discoverable for new
users
   Product: Wikipedia App
   Version: 3.2 (iOS) / 1.2 (Android)
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Search
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: br...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified
Mobile Platform: Windows 8 / Windows RT

The windows 8 tablet app uses the system search charm to implement article
search. This is nice, but is difficult for new users to discover who aren't
familiar with win8.

We could add a search icon in the upper-right which opens the search bar; I've
seen this in some other apps such as the Larousse app.

Works when running from Visual Studio but not when running outside of VS. Not
sure what's up with that yet.

No. Typing is more fluent. Only when clicking edit or cancel it takes about
2-3s. Sometimes they need some time to resize but at least the letters are
visible. There is also a lag but generally it takes only 1s longer to display
what I filled-in completely. Of course it would be nice if there would be no
visible lag at all so it's easier to immediately see and correct typos.

[Bug 39987] Mobile site rendering issues on www.wikipedia.org using Samsung phones

--- Comment #7 from Jon 2012-09-10 20:14:09 UTC ---
The problems here are due to the fact that on desktop the search box appears
below the languages and globe.

On mobile the search box appears below the wikipedia globe.

The easiest way to fix this is to move the search box on desktop below the
globe and above the languages.

Otherwise we will have to resort to css hacks to fix this.

Personally I think it's more in the interest for the user to search then to
select a language from a list so this would be a more logical home...

Broken out from bug 37849: window.devicePixelRatio is checked when loading
stuff, and then either a stylesheet for 1.0x PNGs or one using scalable SVGs
gets loaded depending on the ratio.

This leads to being stuck with the 1.0x PNGs if you started editing on a
low-resolution screen, then moved the window (or detached an external monitor)
and moved it to a high-resolution screen.

Per bug 37849 comment 9 there are probably two ways to fix this:

1) Detect resolution changes (window.onresize?) and switch the stylesheet based
on the updated window.devicePixelRatio

or

2) Always use SVG icon set if SVG is supported in the browser.

Note that Firefox doesn't yet support window.devicePixelRatio, but it's about
to come in in nightlies, before actual HiDPI support for Mac OS X :) --
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=564815

IE 10 doesn't support window.devicePixelRatio at all, which is a bit annoying
although it does support SVG and high-resolution screens eg on Windows 8. We
can leave that as a corner case for the moment, though use of SVG at all
resolutions would conveniently work around it.

The lag there seems to be less than when entering something into the
description field. Even when having 6 of them, it's "less irritating".

What happens when entering a description:
#
# lag 2s
# the first letter or letters that was/were typed by me is/are visible
# the bar changes its color from white to blue
# lag 1s
# the second part is visible
# lag 3s (depends on the length of what you are typing) <--- is is what I find
"most irritating"
# the third part is visible

All in all typing "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" takes me about 5 seconds while
it takes 13 seconds before all letter are visible on screen in the "enter
description" box below the "label field on top".

> This sounds like a UserAgent problem. Isn't the UA meant to handle this?

Nope, no information available in the UA for this.

(In reply to comment #8)
> What about when you have the browser spanning between a low and high DPI
> screen? We can only depend on devicePixelRatio.

If you're spanning over low and high DPI screens on Mac OS X, the window gets
assigned the density of whichever window it has the greatest area on. Eg,
either you get 1.0 scale and it's pixelated on the high-res screen, or you get
2.0 scale and it's scaled down on the low-res screen.

The trick is that window.devicePixelRatio may change over time -- it's a
property, not a constant. I think you get a window.onresize event when
switching ratios, but I'll have to double-check that.

> I think this is closed until there's a better way to detect this.

Yeah it's good enough for now, but I'll file a separate bug as a reminder for
later if we find a cleaner way.

The simplest full fix would be to always use SVG when SVG is supported in the
browser -- this would also fix it for Internet Explorer 10, which doesn't
support devicePixelRatio but has support for higher-resolution screens in
Windows 8.

I'm working on this issue (to start with something small), and I can see two
possibilities for an empty item definition :

* An empty item is an item with just a Label or a description, no Alias : just
one row in the term table
* An empty item is an item not linked with anything (currently no Wikipage)

Which one should it be, one of these two above, or another one ?
