Hi all,

Along with the current Narayam Inscript and transliteration there is a need of
a phonetic typing scheme. Most of the users are new to the transliteration tool
and are beig forced to use it because of the lack of a phonetic tool. In
addition to that users who are using Ubuntu and Mac are quite comfortable with
the typing tools of their operating system and fail to type using the existing
tools. The proposed tool "Lekhani" is based on the phonetic tools of both Lunux
and Mac. The documentation needed for this has been documented at:
http://or.wikipedia.org/s/adl . Please help us set this scheme.

Some more info from Gerrit 27388:

Remove the expensive event listeners

In every keydown, keypress, focus, blur on the document, Narayam
was triggering the jquery selectors - this is very expensive. This
was done to enable Narayam on future DOM elements. This is very rarey
used feature and its cost is high.

As of now, I am not aware of any usecase which use this. If we notice
such usecase we can add them in some UI context with narrow selector
scope.

Browsers like IE is very slow in executing jquery.on on selectors. See
Bug 40630. Eventhough it was solved by jquery upgrade, it is not good
to keep this feature in Narayam.

was able to successfully undelete the file with a log entry. This was the first
time since the bug appeared that I was able to do so. Has anything changed?

Most people have standardized on WGS84, and coordinates in Wikipedia don't
require high level of precision anyway. But this will become a problem when
Wikidata starts import coordinates from multiple external sources which might
use different datums.

In past, redirect to special pages does not do real redirect but display a link
to that special page in the format of &redirect=no. Now redirect to special
pages do HTTP redirect to that special page, causing edit of that redirect
impossible without manual URL construction.

The Malayalam wikipedia community is organizing a one day workshop for the
students who are part of Malayalam wikipedia education
program.(http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/07/06/wikipedia-education-a-model-from-malayalam-wikipedia/)

The event is happening on October 13, 2012. The time of the event is from 10AM
to 5 PM. The date and time is in Indian Standard Time, which is UTC +5.30 

The static IP address of the educational institution where this event is
happening is 117.242.205.107


Around 48 students are part of this program and all of them will be attending
this one day workshop.

Apart from all of them creating their own account, they all need to edit
Malayalam wikipedia through out the day


So kindly do the necessary configuration changes so that all the students can
create account and all 48 of them can edit Malayalam wikipedia through out the
day.

You can bind a listener to the browser's native 'invalid' event. When you hear
it you can output your own invalidity UI and then cancel the event. Canceling
the event will not disable the validation (the form will still not submit) but
it will disable the browser's native UI.

On the Wikimedia Blog, the title argument of the search box is "Search
Wikipedia [f]", which clearly makes no sense, because, last time I checked, the
Wikimedia Blog wasn't Wikipedia...

The bug is easy to find: just go on any page of the Wikimedia Blog
(blog.wikimedia.org) and hover the mouse over the search box. The tooltip with
"Search Wikipedia [f]" will appear.

browser tooltip and MediaWiki div both warning invalid email

With $wgHtml5 now true on en-wiki, the form field attribute type=email in
MediaWiki forms flows to the browser.  This makes recent browsers validate
e-mail addresses on submit.  Which is fine, except when the form does its own
client-side validation, in which case two validation messages appear
simultaneously.  See screenshot.

To reproduce, visit Special:ChangeEmail, enter a bad e-mail, tab out of the
field, and click [Submit] or press the [Enter] key.

This may also happen with other forms using HTMl5 input types that trigger
browser validation that do their own client-side validation.

A workaround is to disable the browser's validation with attributes novalidate
and formnovalidate; it would be better to somehow cooperate with the browser's
implementation.

The problem is related to how WebFonts are hinted on Windows XP / IE
combination (sometimes even Ff,chrome) when the font does not have hint
information in them. I could not get a screenshot now, but I am pretty sure the
issue exists.

There is nothing we could do to this except making non Lohit font as default
font when they are available. Marking it as upstream

Caused by a number of small issues unrelated to mediawiki.searchSuggest, it
just happend to trigger them in a combination exposing them this way.

Whenever I enter a module page, the exception is thrown about an unknown
content type. I will introduce proper content handler soon, but right now this
blocks ContentHandler from being deployed on Scribunto-enabled wikis.

Currently position fixed is only applied to iphone and Android devices to
minimise testing. Please create a story for branching out to other browsers
that are capable of supporting position fixed.

It seems to close on two back button presses instead. This is due to the fact
that the ribbon when selected sets a hash.

We currently disable all javascript on Opera Mini as there were lots of bugs
being raised in it.
We should probably explore this a bit more via a sprint.
In mean time we should probably hide the ribbon all together since watching
requires javascript and languages has a fallback in that it shows the drop down
- albeit there should be a submit button that allows non-javascript users to
select a language (that's another bug - bug 40907 !).

The icon for the left nav bar is missing in Opera Mini, though there's space
for the icon. Tapping on the empty area does nothing. There doesn't appear to
be any fallback alternative (eg if it's missing just because JS is disabled or
something).

The ribbon also doesn't show; though a language drop-down menu displays between
the top bar and the content so at least language switching is available.


We probably disable a bunch of JS on Opera Mini, though it's apparently
actually pretty capable. Should look into this in more detail.

Looks like a MobileFrontend bug. Call stack: 

* require
* ApiMain::execute
* ApiMain::executeActionWithErrorHandling
* ApiMain::executeAction
* ApiMobileView::execute
* ApiMobileView::getData
* WikiPage::getParserOutput
* PoolCounterWork::execute
* PoolWorkArticleView::doWork
* ParserCache::save

ApiMobileView makes a new default ParserOptions, it doesn't get one from
Article::getParserOptions() etc. where tidy and limit reports are enabled.

I also requested that we switch from the CT session to the persistent anon
token set by mw.user.id(), which will allow us to get clickthrough/conversion
data about recurrent edits from the same client across sessions. Matthias noted
that it's trivial to make this change before we push this to production on
Thursday.

I recommend that we run CTA1 at 100% and drop CTA2 entirely. On semiprotected
pages there will simply be no fallback CTA, which is fine as we want to focus
on anonymous edit activity for editable pages only. Let me know if you have any
concerns with this.

Chrome on Android 4.1.1 (Galaxy Nexus)

Ribbon follows along down with us as we scroll down, and tapping the stub
ribbon opens it up to display the language selector.

Clicking on the language selector should activate it, but does nothing.


Scroll back to the top of the page and try it again -- now, and only when at
the top, it works.

Oh, they will be slow...

I've only backported it to 1.21wmf1 wikis (so all non wikipedia projects, plus
enwiki). They are due for upgrade in around 18 hours. I'm not overly sure if
it's worth backporting to 1.20wmf12 too. I can though if
needed/wanted/requested

Wouldn't it be better for that purpose to check in the deployment script if
there were any SQL changes between $DEPLOYED_SHA1 and $SHA1_TO_DEPLOY instead
of keeping books on changes to come?

When I click to download an PDF book the book is created with headers but no
content. This bug applies to en.wikisource.org and is.wikisource.org. I can
replicate this bug with any book on those projects.

Superb...! GU:WS fixed now. Thank you all guys! will check on my office
IE6/IE7, hope there won't be any issue there either... any changes made on
GU:WP as well? as on older versions of IE its sluggish across the gu projects,
I assume with all Narayam installed wikis

Lowering priority on this, because we want to complete the sharding first,
which will not be done until early November. At that point, we can implement
this feature a lot easier than now, according to Matthias.

The goal is to show all posts with comments which have not yet been marked as
resolved, and which have not been hidden or oversighted. By default, we may
want to sort them by date, with the oldest comment first, if that's easy to do. 

The drop-down menu label would be 'Unresolved' and it would be placed right
below the 'Resolved' filter. This filter would only be available to
auto-confirmed editors and up, just like the 'Resolved' filter.

Sam/Reedy has just merged (gerrit 27369) and deployed[1] jQuery 1.8.2 on
1.21wmf1, which includes Wikimedia Commons and gu.wikisource. There may be some
delay because of caching, but you can add "debug=true" as a CGI parameter to
make sure you get the "current" JavaScript.

I'm closing this issue for now, because I think it's resolved. Santhosh will
double check in a few hours if there's anything that should be optimized in
Narayam.

Some Web browsers (such as Mozilla Firefox) will silently and automatically try
the www or non-www version of the URL. I guess this makes for a better user
experience.

http://wmflabs.org still does not resolve properly.

I tested translatewiki.net, and it works perfectly well. But not hadn't tested
it earlier, so not sure whether the issue on gu:ws is related to it... can u
plz. try reverting the same on there as well?

Anonymous users have mTouched set to "0" meaning that they have never been
modified. But wfTimestamp() treats this value as "now" causing the exact
opposite. The consequence is that static resources loaded under anonymous user
are never cached.

This looks like a clear bug, even the source code comment suggest that this
value should cause caching of any page. The attached patch fixes this.

This is network communication before:
http://www.vrana.cz/test/mediawiki/before.png and after:
http://www.vrana.cz/test/mediawiki/after.png. The difference between 1.59 s and
2.63 and the 304 status are important.

FYI: translatewiki.net is now also on jQuery 1.8.2. Those effected, please test
on https://translatewiki.net and let us know here what your test results are
(see test plan in comment 13) and which hardware/software you are using if you
still see issues.

I'll update twn production, too. This is valuable info. Thanks for the
feedback.

I think Krinkle is in charge of deciding which version of jQuery we will be
using. Krinkle: what are the current plans, and should we consider backporting
1.8.2 to 1.20, too?

Actually this appears to fix the issue for me. sandbox.translatewiki.net is
smooth, I don't notice any slowness; about 5% processor usage (but this might
be background processes and tabs). translatewiki.net is still unusable if
Narayam is enabled; 100% usage and a few seconds of waiting every time I
attempt typing.

Update to comment 13: Using jQuery 1.8.2 doesn't appear to help much. I'd like
to think that CPU usage has decreased by a few percent, but that's still not
very significant. sandbox.translatewiki.net is now running jQuery 1.8.2 and
I've just updated everything to HEAD of master again.

I use HP Pavilion g series laptop, with Intel core i5 processor, 2.4 Ghz, 6.00
GB RAM, 64-bit, installed OS: Windows 7 Home premium SP 1. I face serious
performance issue in operating wikisource only in my IE9. Wikipedia and
wiktionary works perfectly OK. In my office, all the Gujarati wikis are facing
the issue of slowness, where I have IE6 installed and OS is windows XP. Don't
know processor but RAM is 2 GB.

So from my experience, it has definitely nothing to do with hardware as with 6
GB RAM and Intel i5 if it is slow, we must do something. This is not the first
time that with mediawiki upgrade Gujarati wiki projects have suffered, couple
of months back also we had issue after upgrade, see Bug 36275.

I could reproduce severe hanging on a Thinkpad T60 laptop (Intel Core2 2GHz, 2

I'm using a mid 2010 MacBook Pro 2,66 GHz Intel Core i7 with Windows 7 with
2.4GB RAM and 2 cores assigned in VMWare 5.0.1.

I've tested with Windows 7 (nlNL local), fully patched, with IE9.0.812. 

Site visited: http://sandbox.translatewiki.net

This runs MediaWiki 1.21 alpha (master/HEAD) and the latest versions for
extensions.

Logged in user, with setlang=de

Observations:
1. IME disabled in preferences: 4-5% CPU utilisation while editing*
User:Siebrand
2. IME enabled in preferences, disabled in UI: 5-10% CPU utilisation while
editing User:Siebrand
3. IME enabled in preferences, enabled in UI: 10-25% CPU utilisation while
editing User:Siebrand

* "editing" is in this case random keystrokes in the edit screen. Example:
sdfsdfa sdfawerfavs bvsd vsdfvsdfvsdfvsdfvsdfv. I have no noticeable
performance degradation, but I can imagine that for slower/older hardware it is
noticeable. What I notice is that while inputting text in scenarios 2 and 3, my
notebook fan starts buzzing.

I'm going to pull in jQuery 1.8.2 from gerrit 27298 now, to see if that helps
any. http://bugs.jquery.com/ticket/12436 was about "Performance degradation
with delegate events and pseudo-classes".

IMHO, the best way to do it would be for $wgServer to not be a URI, but instead
just be a host name. Because when somebody enables $wgSecureLogin it's not that
far a leap to assume they want HTTPS.

I should have spoken up sooner on Krinkle's suggestion about disabling
$wgSecureLogin. It feels wrong to me to opt for the less secure option if
there's a conflict.

But like I put in the comments on gerrit 27136, if this is the best solution we
can do it. I'd much rather have the exceptions be insecure than have people
afraid to enable $wgSecureLogin in general.
