Hi,

We would like to configure a new import source for ro.wikibooks, so we can
import some articles from ro.wp. The new line should be:

'rowikibooks' => array( 'w', 's', 'commons' )

It works now after the code was updated, so I think it was the same as the
complete breakage of the job queue on 1.21wmf2/1.21wmf3, fixed by Tim and Aaron
with some investigations by Reedy, Ariel and others.

Ugh, I hate all that X-Device stuff ...

I'm trying to make sense of the Varnish config; it looks like BB10 will be
detected as "webkit"... but that would surely detect Chrome and Safari and
whatnot on desktop as well, which obviously don't get redirected. So either I
don't understand something in how this thing works, or I don't understand why
it doesn't redirect those browsers. ;)

[Bug 13260] post expand size counted multiple times for nested transclusions

2012-11-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13260

--- Comment #14 from CBM 2012-11-05 03:01:35 UTC ---
@Tim Starling (comment 12): Thanks for the update. I want to point out
something this affects other than deeply nested metatemplates. More importantly
it affects "split" discussion pages, for example when they are divided by day.
For example if there are 10 discussion pages transcluded on "A (2012-11-5)" and
10 more transcluded on "A (2012-11-6)" and then page B transcludes both both
those "A" pages. In this case the nesting is trivial - just depth 2 - but the
cost on page B is double what it should be. On enwiki this affects e.g.
[[Wikipedia:Peer review]], where there is again a shallow nesting of large-ish
discussion pages. If there is a work around for this particular use case it
would be very helpful.

I think it was this change:

http://trac.imagemagick.org/changeset/4014/ImageMagick/trunk/magick/property.c

It should have a +1 in line 2815. (Unless the change from 1-based to zero-based
indexing was intentional, of course).

That would place the change betweeen IM 6.6.8-8 (1-based) and 6.6.8-10
(zero-based) according to http://www.imagemagick.org/script/changelog.php.

".6em". See bug 41240 for more details.

It is possible to add manually summaries, but for a UI like this where there
will be a high number of very small edits, I seriously doubt that it will work
properly. Not because its not possible to make an additional UI, and not
because its not possible to integrate the manual summaries with the
autogenerated ones - its already there for some of the modules - but the users
will not add summaries for such tiny updates.

This will end up with a lot of work to solve a 1% problem, focus on solving the
99% problem instead.

[Bug 41245] VisualEditor: Always support Firefox ESR versions

Considering this timeframe issue, it looks fine to me not to support 10.0.x ESR
currently. But in

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/VisualEditor/2012-13_Q1_forward-look#cite_note-FirefoxLater-3

I see "VE team roughly intend to support the current, soon-to-be-current, and
immediately previous versions only." and this bug is asking VE team not to
treat ESR versions as "outdated versions" but "current version" in another
"branch".

I assume you have some kind of tests for the different functionalities.
Exposing them would allow:
a) Users to beta test the functionality on the UA of their choice.
b) Vendors to actually test what fails and needs fixing (eg. Iceweasel
maintainers)
c) It's much more clear what is not working for each browser (or if it just
hasn't been tested).

--- Comment #3 from Andre Klapper 2012-11-04 21:57:19

The last comment is a general "Do we allow unsupported browsers to use VE"
question. It's not specific to supporting Firefox ESR versions.

To put this into context:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Engineering/2012-13_Goals#Visual_Editor
states: "Q2 (October-December 2012):
First English Wikipedia deployments and iteration (New Page creation is not an
ideal candidate here because of required support for things like a VE citations
to ensure page survivability)".
VE deployment is planned for up to the end of June 2013.

http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportClients.htm shows a
0.52% rate for Firefox 10.0 (which will likely decrease in the future).

According to
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Enterprise/Firefox/ExtendedSupport:Proposal#Proposal
the end of life for Firefox 10.0.x is planned for February 12, 2013. That's 13
weeks from now.

Though there are enough internet users who run unsupported vulnerable old
software versions I'd say it's arguable if it makes sense to allow FF 10.0.x as
it will be rather dead soon anyway.

For the time being, feedback from testing VE on FF 10.0.x would be useless and
not interesting for VE developers. If VE in 10.0.x turns out buggy, Wikimedia
would get blamed for a non-functional VisualEditor and would receive feedback
to "fix it please!", instead of the browser vendor for its old version.

So at the current state I don't consider adding &vewhitelist helpful for
anybody. Proposing WONTFIX again.

The latter. As the upstream bug says, it's definitely gerrit's fault because
big files are not loaded at all, so except the diff nothing else can be shown.

Won't get into core, since VisualEditor is where resources are dedicated in
this area (unless a volunteer picks it up, which i doubt will happen).

Default gadget seems like the simplest and most effective solution. And devs
won't have to deal with all the people complaining which will inevitably follow
if this is turned on by default.

Since most major browsers already support SVG [1] it seems sensible enough that
we provide a configuration variable so SVG images are embedded directly in
articles just as any other images, without the need to generate a rasterized
thumbnail.

Although I'm not sure if that would eliminate the need of a SVG converter to
retrieve the file dimensions and get the proper aspect ratio for generating
width and height of the image. Maybe we could get it directly from the svg
markup.

  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: File management
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

I am running in safe_mode, and am having trouble with thumbnails. I have
$wgUseImageResize = false; so that I can use all my already-rasterized images,
but I have no way of disabling the SVG rasterizer, and yet still being able to
view the image itself (aka an img tag with src="something.svg"). I don't want
to support old browsers. How can I fix this?

http://www.mwusers.com/forums/showthread.php?18000-Error-sending-confirmation-Email
states there was a fix in 1.18.1.
However the error message is so generic that I can imagine many reasons why
this fails (and that the two affected users who commented here might have
different problems with the same outcome).

For the records, a similar report without a solution is

> MediaWiki already has JavaScript table sorting.

Ah. I had been under the misapprehension it was something template-based. Okay.

> The issue is that paginated results will make the sorting useless, isn't it?

Well, in many cases it's possible to see all the results of the query by
bumping up the limit parameter, at which point sorting becomes valuable.

It should be made clear that sorting applies only to the visible results.

"The following 50 pages link to Example.
Sorted in alphabetical order. [change sort direction]
(previous 50 | next 50) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500)"

[Bug 41770] New: Highlighting syntax within editing window by default

2012-11-04 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41770

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 41770
Summary: Highlighting syntax within editing window by default
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Page editing
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: ijethro...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

Having read and
, this enhancement
proposal is sufficiently different and is based on different discussion.

There is a wide consensus of editors who would like to see syntax highlighting
in the standard editing window turned on by default, particularly for
references, for wiki markup. This consensus has been reached in two
discussions on en.wiki, one at the Village Pump

and one in a Request For Comments that was a part of Centralized Discussion for
30 days:
.
Given the course of the discussion, and the overwhelming support for this
functionality, I decided to submit this proposal to bugzilla.

Many participants in the above discussions expressed that adding a syntax
highlighter would make editing a more accessible experience for newer users.
In fact, direct feedback from new editors has suggested that this has been a
problem (e.g. ).
They are also unsatisfied with

Previous proposals have stated that implementing this internally is not
possible. However, this is incorrect; there are at least some examples of
non-external editors that work or could work reasonably well:
- jsfiddle: (with implementation:
)
- AceWikiEditor:
- en.wikipedia user RememberTheDot's syntax highlighter:

(which I use).

The only thing I would have liked to see more of in the above discussions were
persons who might be able to discuss a specific implementation. Some
discussion of that is here:
.
Such discussion would be helpful here, given the above information on how it
may be viable to implement this internally.

This would be problematic for the same reason it's problematic for templates.

This change has been done in the Polish translation of MW a long time ago (in

Fair enough, we can leave the discussion for another time. But in any case, I
would contend that "My talk" is substantially clearer than "(talk)" or simply

Unfortunately, there are many, many instances where users are instructed "leave

This was one of the reasons for the switch from "Discussion" back to "Talk".

Until there's a new framework, we should leave it as is.

This bug is not the best place to discuss Flow or its plans; this bug is for
discussing possessives in labels.

--- Comment #24 from Jarry1250 2012-11-04 17:17:33 UTC ---
Having it as " (talk)" rather than "Messages" avoids one kind of confusion
(down the line, one might have two messaging systems run in parallel) at the
expense of the other (users being completely confused at to where they pick up
the messages people have sent to them.

To expand somewhat, "talk" is an active verb, and "(talk)" is clearly used
throughout the interface as a way of saying "click here to send a message to
Y". I don't think it's obvious at all to newer users that you would click on
that to read messages sent to that user (i.e. "me"). Even "My talk" was less
cryptic in that respect, because implied that the target was a thing that you
had control over.

Imagine sitting down with a new user. You ask them to find the note about
copyright issues you sent them last Thursday. Would they be more likely to
click "My talk", "(talk)" or "Messages"?

Are, so Flow and user talk are going to run in parallel? How will that work? I
can see that Flow notifications + user talk pages works as an intermediary, but
are we really going to have two user messaging systems running in parallel?

Precisely *because* it's such a good name. We've been discussing LQT for
literally ages, and even if we think Flow's going to deployed at some point in
the future, then it's going to be a replacement for talk pages, not going to a
confusing dual-system (at least I hope not). In the meantime, why should we be
put of using "messages"? I don't buy it.

(a.k.a. "Flow"); let's not pollute this name. :-)

They don't. See includes/User.php, every pref that is hidden is automatically
reset to the default when accessed in both getOption() and getOptions().

(In reply to comment #3)
> Is your browser pre-filling it from previously submitted form?

This is probably what's going on here. Or else they have a user script
installed that remembers the setting of the checkbox and changes it.

sunil: Is there an exact testpage / could you provide steps to reproduce?
Why do you think that it "crashed"? Do you refer to a software crash here, or
do you just mean that it is not working?

Screenshot of incorrect behaviour

Are there any steps to reproduce you can provide? I have these:

1. Go to https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Main_Page?useskin=monobook
2. Click in the search field
3. Click the down arrow on the IME icon

Observed: Options screen appears partially outside of screen. See screenshot.

Expected: Options screen appears completely and readable.

Hi guys, and sorry if this has been mentioned before (I did a search but
couldn't find anything relevant). I just saw the ULS live on Wikidata, and of
course I love it. However, there is one small annoyance: when you click outside
the area of the popup, the popup should close. This behaviour is pretty much a
standard on the web by now with these in-page popups (e.g. Facebook pictures),
and it is what I expect when clicking outside of its area.

Otherwise, great job guys! Bravo. :-)

Is it worth considering "Messages" instead of "talk" if we're dropping "My"? I
realise "Messages" has become associated with LQT, but really a user talkpage
is just a collection of messages to the user, and every newbie I've talked to
thinks of them that way.

Just my 2c.
