Later on the special page can search for the specific marker in the page_props table . This should be a fairly efficient way to identify stub-pages. I got it this morning a couple of times on Commons. In general, redoing the same search (or a couple of times) one or more seconds later finally returns some results. So the basic problem is that the service is not reliable and does not report that there is a problem. Why I proposed on another bug report to return at least a status and the date of the search database update (which is another source of frustration as it looks as if it takes between 1 and 5 days before new files are included in the search database). As test procedure, one could easily make a script that uses as search string the name of a random category (or a word of it) and searches in files, galleries and categories: each search should yield some results. One example is the constraint that an item's combination of label and description must be unique for any given language. We check this, but can not (efficiently) do this with 100% accuracy. The effect is that two items with the same label/description/language combination may exist in the database. These conflicting items can then no longer be modified (except by resolving the conflict), because any attempt to save them would fail due to the uniqueness constraint (and currently without an error message, see bug 43720). The main use of this constraint is to keep people from creating a data item about some concept that already has an item. Applying the uniqueness check when creating the item, and refusing the create the item if there already is one with the same label/description/language, would solve that problem, but would still allow conflicting items to be edited later. It however also allows conflicts to be introduced by editing existing items. Surely the title attribute should be consistent across namespaces? Currently some code in the beta which has leaked into mobile (patch in gerrit for that) is relying on the title attribute for the name of the page.
