To follow up, I have decided to act as mentor should the project be selected.

I think annotation is a valid term, although comment is also commonly used
(e.g. LibreOffice, Google Docs). co-ment seems to use both terms.

There should probably be some kind of permalink that shows the comment, but
initially that might just be a link to the revision (especially if comments
aren't preserved on edit in the first implementation).

I don't think they should be shown to readers by default. It would have to be
a toggle of some kind. It would be nice to make this available in VisualEditor
mode (either just that, or both).

The notes to self idea needs further thought. I see the primary use of the
extension as collaborative work, but then again people do use userpage for
drafts too.

If this project moves forward, we may want to continue speccing it out on
mediawiki.org.

A bit of context and braindumping:

http://openannotation.org/
http://www.openannotation.org/wiki/index.php/Web_Page_Clients_List

Maybe "annotations" is the label we are looking for? Wikipedia articles are not
scholarship texts, and inline comments won't be scholrship annotations. Then
again... aren't they structurally the same? Point to a specific portion of text
and connect a comment, a signature, a timestamp, maybe a link.

Another aspect is My Annotations, as part of My Contributions.

I guess annotations will need a unique deeplink?

And do we get those annotations by default, or should users activate an
"Annotated view"? Maybe the latter, it looks like too much extra bytes and
clutter for the majority of people interested in the first paragraph and some
factoids.

Bonus:
Are all annotations willing the be seen publicly by default? We won't go for
private annotations, but maybe people want to have notes-to-self? Like ToDo
post-its for editors, or notes for students preparing their school work. Those
would be as public as our User pages: public for those knowing where to look
but out of default searches / views.

Emw, Three.js vs. x3dom is irrelevant to uploads.

X3DOM's popularity is irrelevant. What's being talked about is not X3DOM, it's
the .x3d file format. Which can be exported by whatever 3d tools people are
using and uploaded.

x3dom is primarily a viewer for .x3d files.

While Three.js is a library layer that allows you to write interactive 3d
things in the browser. While it supports importing COLLADA it's not a viewer.
You'd have to write your own viewer.

Apples and oranges.

Emw changed:

I've been working on a solution to do enable browser-native, interactive 3D
models of proteins and DNA through the PDBHandler extension I've been
developing. Here are some thoughts on possible high-level requirements for a
potential GSoC project to enable broader support for interactive 3D models in
Wikimedia projects:

The solution should use WebGL by default. It probably isn't worth mentioning,
but the solution should not use Java applets or Flash.

There needs to be a fallback for browsers that don't have WebGL enabled by
default. Many browsers don't support it, or only partially support it: see
http://caniuse.com/webgl. IE10 and below don't support WebGL, and I would
surprised if IE11 will. WebGL is disabled by default in Safari 5.1 and 6.0, so
Safari can effectively be considered to not support it.

The fallback should support rendering to the 3D model as a static image. This
is needed to support printing articles with 3D models, and would be a
reasonable fallback for browsers that don't have WebGL enabled.

Regarding the WebGL framework used, I'd be interested to learn more about how
X3DOM compares to Three.js. A brief comparison is here:
http://weblog.benjaminsommer.com/blog/2012/05/13/comparison-of-webgl-framework-apis-part-5/.

Three.js seems drastically more popular than X3DOM. Comparing some rough
metrics of developer interest:

GitHub:
- https://github.com/x3dom/x3dom: 91 stars, 27 fork, 0 pull requests, 32
issues
- https://github.com/mrdoob/three.js: 10,494 stars, 1,979 fork, 26 pull
requests, 248 issues

Stackoverflow:
- 25 questions tagged for http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/x3dom
- 1,543 tagged questions for http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/three.js

IRC:
- 0 users on irc://freenode/x3dom (Googling gave no relevant results for 'x3dom
irc')
- 82 users on irc://freenode/three.js

There's also an O'Reilly book on Three.js (masquerading as a book on WebGL):
http://www.amazon.com/WebGL-Up-Running-Tony-Parisi/dp/144932357X. I'm not
aware of any books about X3DOM.

The PDBHandler extension I've been working on also uses Three.js.

[Bug 46527] TimedText Line Breaks & Hard Spaces That Don't Collapse

2013-03-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon

I tried , I tried \n, \N, hyphens, pasting in Windows CRLF line breaks,
UNIX LF line breaks, I tried | characters, I tried adding a leading space to
the 2nd line, I tried extra CRLFs, I tried extra '\', and maybe some other
things too, so many it is hard to recall.

I tried \h to get hard spaces, and putting the spaces in single quotes, but
that didn't work either.

Perhaps the cortado player for Internet Explorer doesn't behave properly with
.srt files' 2nd lines, or perhaps the wikimedia system is altering the
presentation of the .srt text to the player?

How is anybody supposed to add CSS such as white-space-collapse="false" to a
.srt TimedText?

This is the .srt file I'm working on:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/TimedText:Pie_In_The_Sky.ogg.en.srt

The link you give for TimedText seems to specify completely different markup
than I've ever seen anywhere else before. Is there a way to use that with
video & audio on mediawiki instead of .srt files?

Proposed at
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/Possible_projects#3rd_party_client
, with additional comments from Lydia Pintscher.

Currently Wikidata is only set up to directly serve data to the Wikipedias. The
goal of this project is to also allow 3rd party clients to consume Wikidata
data in the same way.

What is missing is for example the change propagation to the new
client. Right now if something changes these changes are propagated to
the Wikipedias so they show up in the watchlist and recent changes
there for example and pages using the information are updated. This
right now only works for Wikipedias.

Proposed at

Wikidata could be a lot smarter than it is right now e.g. by suggesting fields
to fill and probable values.

For example: when an editor edits an item about a person that is still missing
the date of birth, this should be suggested as a possible property. Or when the
editor is entering the sex of the person, Wikidata should be smart and suggest
the ones that are used most for these properties first. Think of it as
something very similar to the famous "people who bought x also bought y"
systems.

[Bug 28956] Dumps should be incremental

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28956

Quim Gil changed:

Ariel has proposed this feature request as a Google Summer of Code Project at
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Mentorship_programs/Possible_projects#XML_dumps

We have accepted it and a shorter version is now listed at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Summer_of_Code_2013#Incremental_data_dumps

Pasting here the recommendation for a implementation from Ariel, just in case:

This could be achieved by designing the right output format for the XML files
containing text for all revisions. It would need: a smart choice for
compression of multiple items together, an index into the compressed blocks, a
way to remove content quickly, possibly leaving zeroed blocks bhind, a way to
re-use empty blocks. To use the new archive format, we would need tools to
convert to bz2 or 7z (so users can keep all their existing scripts for the
dumps), a format for storing isolated sets of changes (so dump users can
download just these sets), a script to apply those changes to the above format
(so users can run the script against the change set and their full dump to
update their copy). It would likely need to take as input an XML file of new
pages and new revisions for old pages, as well as a list of pages and/or
revisions that have been deleted in the meantime; this would entail no changes
to MediaWiki core, all of the work would be done by a separate set of tools.

The API is specifically allowed to return fewer than the requested number of

this case) if calculating the result set would take excessive processing.

Is there a good way to select only the "Number of page watchers" table row in
CSS or JavaScript? I want to highlight it from a particular hyperlink using an
anchor (similar to how s have a light blue background on some
wikis). This requires being able to select only that table row. Is this
possible currently?

Resetting this to new.

The good news is that the info action has now been re-implemented and is
available on Wikimedia wikis (including Wikipedia) and by default in MediaWiki
core. Yay!

The bad news is that we still don't have cool stats in the info action's
output.

Here's the live info action today:
.

(In reply to comment #0)
> * Total size of article (in kb)
> * Total size of text (in kb)
> * Total size of readable text (in kb)
> * Total size of all images in article (in kb)
> * Readable Word Count (excluding headings etc as per definitions of
> '''article
> count - alternative''')
> * Amount of internal links
> * Amount of external links

Can you split this out into individual bug reports, please? :-) One bug report
for each bullet, I guess. Take a look at

to see how similar bugs have been filed. Individual bug reports allow everyone
to focus on particular data points to add action=info. Some of these data
points have very clear forward paths. Others have very unclear forward paths
(for example, measuring "readable text").

> : As well as up-to-date information on the page which shows what the average
> Wikipedia article is like in comparison to the article, plus additional
> information on the language version. (eg Average Wikipedia article size is
> 2078 bytes, compared to English language article size of 2315 bytes)

Right. This will be a separate bug report.

> Additional useful statistics include ''character'', sentence, and paragraph
> counts, and readability score (noting readability is language-specific).

This too. Ideas for implementation strategies for any of this would also be
great inside the individual bug reports. ;-)

[Bug 1495] Improve message source fallback flow

Mormegil changed:

 Status|RESOLVED|REOPENED
 Resolution|FIXED |---

The change has one small problem (well, more, but let’s keep it simple for
start): It does not include the site language itself in the fallback chain.
Obviously, the problem appears only when the site language is not English,
because English is included always as the fallback language of last resort.

But for non-English sites, we need to add it explicitly
(Language::getFallbacksFor does not return it in the list), otherwise we do not
see the modified messages in the local language at all.

This is not really true. Wikimedia's Wikis respect the Exif-Orientation tags
set by digital cameras and if you download a picture, or just request the
original through clicking on the file at the file description page, you get
them in the wrong orientation despite the thumbnail looks fine.

In any case, if the reuser is a professional they know what they have to do; if
they aren't it isn't that important that they get the original file (they can
save thumbs). Note Bug 31366 about this issue.

When I try this, the entire section (two very short paragraphs) gets selected.
Not ideal, but not sure why it's doing that.

Most other sections appear to have normal selection behavior; you have to
select a fair portion before it goes into full-paragraph selections.

Yeah, fixed through various re-writes. We're going to leave aliens as

IE if the cursor ends up inside.

As an aside I think that should be discussed in a separate bug. Getting humans
to record sound and getting auto tts of ipa (what comment 0 is asking for) is
rather different.

And I suspect the problem is that the API apaches are doing the rotation, but
they won't have libjpeg-turbo-progs etc

Maybe we could just disable the api module on the cluster for now

The fact that the file size is smaller, doesn't necessarily mean that it has a
loss of quality. The program rotating the image may do some optimization of it,
although I agree that it's odd that it's always smaller.

On Windows I use a program called IrfanView which has some options labeled as
"JPG Lossless rotation" which also changes the file size.

Ok I'll withhold my comments about whether this API method is a good idea or
not... ;)

But the reason it's not lossless on JPEGs on the live cluster is most likely
because 'jpegtran' is not installed on the application servers, so it's falling
back to ImageMagick or some such.

That was my first question as well. :-) It required re-reading the bug summary

Ok, sounds like the proper fix is:

1) forbid running mwscript on fenari or elsewhere in pmtpa while eqiad is
primary, because IT CAN CAUSE BREAKAGE TO DO SO (split-brain memcache, bad
cached items possibly being reinserted to databases)

2) set up someplace in eqiad where mwscript can be run, so that maintenance
scripts can be run WITHOUT BREAKAGE

Where did the rotated images come from (eg, what tool did you use?)

AFAIK there's nothing built-in to MediaWiki that's designed to perform lossless
rotation and then upload the result, so there's something non-default going on.

[Bug 39598] VisualEditor: Support templates

2013-03-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39598

VE will support template editing quite soon (famous last words!) which will
replace (alongside the TemplateData extension) pretty much all of what the
RefToolbar does in terms of telling users how to use the templates and what
each parameter means.

We should certainly look at some accessor functionality to make it easy and
obvious when in a reference to know what templates to use, but that would be in
longer time.

My concern is that we're currently targetting this landing in the middle of the
GSoC period - too late for someone working on GSoC to react to it and extend
it, and so soon into the period (and so obviously-about-to-happen) to make
working on the area that VE will replace it. :-(

Bug ID: 46549
Summary: File size shrinks during rotation (action:
'imagerotate') // Rotation not lossless?
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: 1.21-git
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: API
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: rainerril...@hotmail.com
CC: bjor...@wikimedia.org, bryan.tongm...@gmail.com,
roan.katt...@gmail.com, s...@reedyboy.net
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

I don't know whether it is really a bug or just some
JPEG-encoding-internal-strangeness

Test at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bot-Test.jpg

API query at:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=info|imageinfo&iiprop=size|comment&titles=File:Bot-Test.jpg&iilimit=5

Start size: 324829; then, after first rotation 281901, then 275364, then 270655
and finally after 4 rotations just 268076 Bytes:

Expected result: After 360° rotation and if the image is not cropped, the file
size is supposed to be the same.

Why isn't simply the Metadata of the file manipulated (the
EXIF-Orientation-tag). The image-scalers would do the remaining work.

Which is why exploiting this resource is a good project.

Not what comment 0 asked, but some proposed it; clarifying summary.

Indeed, see URL where there's clear interest from the communities.
It's still not clear, from a Wikimedia projects point of view, if the aim is
best served by an extension or other system, but the request is legit.

[Bug 39598] VisualEditor: Support templates

Fair enough. Maybe the project should be "work on citation stuff" broadly --
not sure how to frame that :) There is plenty of work that should overlap
between the reftoolbar and the VE, though; like figuring out what citation
template parameters need to be used, figuring out how to work with Lua
conversions, and so on. I wonder if reftoolbar could be converted into a VE
plugin -- the interface is actually pretty good, no need to reinvent the wheel
on handling citations.

Neither can I. It was in a discussion about a mobile tool for recording spoken
word and uploading to commons, both for the Wiktionary project and wikisource
(for oral history recordings needing transcriptions.)

Many Words in Wikitionary have a pronunciation attached along with it,but there
are many words that dont have this feature
Example : http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/compendium

And i did a quick random survey and i found out that words which are pertaining
to a specific field like mathematics, chemistry don't have the pronunciation
attached

A solution which i propose is to provide a button to record the sound ,on
clicking that button a 5 sec recording starts within which the speaker should
be loud, clear and adhere to the phonetics. A Rating feature would also go
along well with this feature,to describe it briefly :People can record the
pronunciation and volunteers can rate the recordings out of 5(similar to the
imdb ones :))

We could have the recordings saved in the ogg or wav format.

It does not seem wise to replace a system daemon on whose behaviour most tools
rely to cover what seems to be an edge case (in particular, a daily schedule
run at a specific hour in only one time zone).

As it is, unless there are enough tools with that requirement to justify the
necessary security audit and packaging of a new system daemon, I'm going to
recommend that tool authors add that logic to their tool, instead.

Luis Felipe Schenone expressed interest in working on this, and there's a (WIP)
patch on gerrit: I7bd77e6e.

Erwin, everything that's needed to make more (or different) tabs collapsible in
the same way is simply adding those classes to them (even dynamically); the
script is quite (surprisingly ;) ) well-written and will handle it perfectly.
Your gadget is interesting, but it seems to solve a different use-case.
