Thank you Brianna for pointing out that
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard offers users an option
to categorize images when uploading them.

For what is worth the Commons mobile apps for iOS and Android are also
including this feature as we speak.

It seems good design to have titles as titles and descriptions of changes in
the descriptions, instead of the title as well.

Resolving as WONTFIX. Feel free to reopen if you disagree.

preview HTML instead of original wikitext.

[Bug 47278] New: Unable to log in with api.php on wikitech.wikimedia.org

2013-04-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon

   Web browser: ---
Bug ID: 47278
Summary: Unable to log in with api.php on
wikitech.wikimedia.org
   Product: Wikimedia Labs
   Version: unspecified
  Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General
  Assignee: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
  Reporter: legoktm.wikipe...@gmail.com
CC: abog...@wikimedia.org, b...@mzmcbride.com,
benap...@gmail.com, rlan...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

I've tried with multiple python libraries to log into my account via api.php
and failed. (index.php works just fine)

It returns an error of "WrongPass" when I'm 100% sure my password is correct.

These libraries (wikitools, pywikipedia) work fine on other wikis running the
same MediaWiki version, so it has to be something in wikitech's setup, maybe an
extension.

The first step (getting the token) works fine to the best of my knowledge.

... and here we are still, ;) although I think you do have a point.

Aren't these "annotations" very similar to the "metadata" you requested a
couple of years later at Bug 17503 ?

Your explanation, including the references to multilingual 'tags' sound very
Wikidata to me. In fact this is how I ended up learning about

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikidata/Notes/Future#Commons

and from there jumping to a bug report that you happened to open as well, the
mentioned Bug 17503

I think this report is a WONTFIX, not because of the problem (I think you are
identifying it right) but because of the type of solution proposed.

Thanks, PleaseStand. I heard about that limit before, but didn't make the

I confirmed that

has over 31 stylesheets (47 in fact).

Closing, since the fix is not within the scope of GuidedTour. Reopen if you
encounter the bug outside of debug mode.

It seems to only happen on test2 because test2 has ResourceLoader debug mode
enabled by default, and the other wikis don't. Adding &debug=true to an
en.wikipedia.org edit page URL produces the same error in IE 8.

The odd part is that the URLs seem to be valid protocol-relative URLs, and that
my local test wiki (having only a few extensions installed) has no such
problem. So I think the cause of this is IE's 31 stylesheet limit, and that
debug mode loads each stylesheet separately, even in IE < 10.

I have filed bug 47277 to track this.

[Bug 47277] New: Debug-mode CSS loading can fail because of the IE stylesheet limit

2013-04-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47277

   Web browser: Internet Explorer
Bug ID: 47277
Summary: Debug-mode CSS loading can fail because of the IE

   URL: http://test2.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page

Blocks: 47064, 47065
Classification: Unclassified
   Mobile Platform: ---

See bug 47064 and bug 47065. In Internet Explorer 8 and 9, when the
ResourceLoader tries to load a 32nd stylesheet in debug mode (as determined by
document.querySelectorAll('link[rel="stylesheet"], style').length in the IE 8
debug console), this JS error is produced:

"Could not set the href property. Invalid property value."

This is consistent with hitting the 31 stylesheet limit in these IE versions.
ResourceLoader should work around this limitation so debug mode can be used
with these browsers, even if many extensions (each having a few stylesheets)
are installed.

The date of the commit is already bulking up the size of everything.

This extra date is confusing and just bloat.

Special:Version's version information is not for displaying whether there are
updates or not. It's for saying what the currently installed versions are.

This addition is not relevant to the version page.

HTTPS can be enforced via . I had
a thought today that wikimediafoundation.org should be HTTPS-only. Subsequent
thoughts added doubt. For example, the wiki doesn't really get used for
donation forms as much these days, I don't think, so some risk is mitigated.

But... it's still a weird fishbowl wiki that allows strange uploads and raw
HTML, so it wouldn't be totally unexpected for it to enforce HTTPS. I think it
might be nice to have. Filing this as an enhancement request for consideration.

irclib.ServerConnection represents a single low-level connection to a server,
it doesn't restart the connection if it is reset for whatever reason. The
caller in adminlogbot.py doesn't restart the connection either, it just
continues in an infinite loop of calling bot.irc.process_once(), which does
nothing after the connection is closed.

The version of irclib available on wikitech-static (0.4.8) also has an "ircbot"
library, which provides a higher level interface including automatic
reconnection. Using this library instead would hopefully give us a morebots
service which doesn't need constant manual restarts.

usertags_meta has a field called utm_enabled which, when set to 0, should hide
the cohort from the cohort list view.

This field can be used later as a basis to handle cohort deletion.

This is very annoying. If the feature to avoid bad moves is not working
properly, perhaps we should disable it until it is at least not blocking
genuine actions (perfectionism aside, this is not a feature request but a bug,
a regression at that).

Or perhaps allow sysops to override it?

Yeah, it's a fair point. I think it's likely that we're hurting the retention
of new people by not just automatically remembering people on both signup and
login. Forcing people to log in again and check the box is less elegant than
just remembering folks from the start. And some people do that:
http://skinnywhitegirl.com/blog/ux-best-practices-login-persistence/452/
However, I doubt people would appreciate it much if we just did that, from a
privacy and security perspective.

There are all kinds of things we do like this that hurt editor retention.
Another big one is making email optional, and no doubt encouraging thousands of
users to ignore the option and then never be able to recover their accounts if
they forget their credentials. But we have thus far decided the ability to
create an account without email outweighs the danger of letting users pass Go
without it. And I think this is similar: for the majority of new people signing
up, removing an unnecessary and potentially confusing checkbox on signup is a
benefit that outweighs the danger you brought up, at least IMO.

Regarding the examples you brought up: Facebook, Google, Twitter, and lots of
others follow the pattern I'm suggesting, where the "remember me" is only on
login, not signup.

I'll go ahead and cautiously mark this as resolved/fixed.

Yeah it's not just MariaDB, it's also Percona Server (Drizzle doesn't support
mysql's communication protocol so it's not relevant).

The return of VERSION() appears to at least hint what the server type is. We
might just want to try and extract which server type it is out of that then
look up a hardcoded list of MySQL derived server types and their urls.

Creating a subclass for MariaDB doesn't really sound like a great idea. That
could make things turn into a mess if we decide to slowly ease into migrating
from the mysql_* functions to MySQLi or PDO by creating something like a
Database_MySQLi subclass.

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47267

If the checkbox is only removed during account creation, this seems fine.

We should note, however, that even hyper-minimalist user interfaces (such as
Google's or Facebook's) include a "remember me" or "stay signed in" checkbox
during regular account login, even though it is clutter/bloat. It seems to
currently be very expected on the Web.

That said...

(In reply to comment #2)
> To be clear: I'm not suggesting we should remove the option and automatically
> set the cookie for people. (We didn't do that during testing either, for
> what I think are obvious reasons.)

Isn't there a reasonable argument to be made that by not offering this checkbox
during account creation, a larger number of users will return to the site (in a
few days or in a week or two) and not be logged in, hurting (or at least not
helping) editor retention? I have no hard data to support this, it's just a
thought.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.

As far as I know, all API requests are not handled by the job queue (including
edits). Specific actions performed via the API (edit, delete, etc.) may trigger
the creation of jobs (adding to the size of the job queue), but all requests
are served by the API cluster as soon as possible and the API cluster is almost
always up-to-date (though occasionally a slave will lag by a few thousands
seconds).

If you try to import a dump with (for example) Scribunto modules into a wiki
that does not have Scribunto installed, you get "No handler for model
'Scribunto'' registered in $wgContentHandlers", followed by a big scary stack
trace. We should catch that and emit something more useful, like a hint to go
look for an appropriate extension.

Maybe we should create a MediaWiki.org mapping of ContentHandler types to their
canonical implementation..

Kirsten reports that some jobs she started in production with very small
cohorts (like test2) are idling after hours. There's currently no way to kill
them or restart them from the UI as they are still marked as pending.

I can't check what's going wrong with these requests on stat1001, but a query
like this one, when run on the dev instance, takes less than 10 seconds to
complete:

That sounds good. That gives us a way to tell if any fix we implement has made
things better, made them worse, or had no effect at all.

MariaDB"

We removed this on our second round of testing, IIRC, and conversions went up a
percentage point, which was significant relative to the number of observations.
(The Meta page with the raw data is at the shortcut R:ACUX.)

However, I wouldn't claim removing the checkbox alone was what resulted in this
bump, since removing the checkbox also had secondary benefits which are likely
more important: for instance, removing that option means the submit button is
above the fold for more people.

More important than the testing data is that this option is not one that is
really necessary on signing up. Login is a different story. Simplifying the
user experience by removing unnecessary instructions, options, and checkboxes
is A Good Thing.

To be clear: I'm not suggesting we should remove the option and automatically
set the cookie for people. (We didn't do that during testing either, for what I
think are obvious reasons.)

Database*::getSoftwareLink() is already being called non-statically from both
WebInstallerPage and SpecialVersion. So it would be about 5 minutes' work to
change the method declarations to be non-static and to fix
DatabaseMysql::getSoftwareLink() to return something appropriate. In the
WebInstallerPage case, the object is not connected to an actual server, which
is not a problem, it's just an extra line of code to check for that.
